I guess it's super expensive; hard to tell when nothing is labeled. However, we were in shock when they rang us up for a gallon of apple cider and it was $19!! Went ahead and bought it thinking it might be special and it was exactly the same as we got from King's for $9. I really like this place. If you are going to support local, then I mean this is the place to go to. I'm not entirely sure where the apples and some vegetables come from though I wish it was more clear on their website. Their website is hard to navigate. They do have the best fruit pops and smoothies in the area and I think the kid who runs the places really puts his heart into it. I like this place because there are no tip jars, just fair prices, and fresh vegetables. I like the space and that he works with local farmers and has built this up. I also like that there are events that are fun and outside of the box. I wish the space was organized a little bit better, but hopefully in time. It's coming a long way. "Excellent local (and some non-local) produce in Durham" Nestled in the middle of a residential neighborhood, I've driven past this on Barbee Road several times but finally stopped in for the first time 3 weeks ago. And I've come back every weekend since. The owner inherited the place from his father and has been here since he was 10 years old. It's not huge-- mostly a set of nice wooden shelves behind the owner's home. It's a bit of a stretch to call it an "orchard"-- while there are some fruit trees, there's no option for customers picking from the trees, and most of what's for sale is local but not grown on-site. Still, this place is great, and the prices are very competitive! Some things to check out right now: + Apples. LOTS of varieties-- ~10 when I was there earlier today. While they may not look as pristine as the ones in the grocery store, they taste AMAZING-- much better than Kroger's. We're especially fans of the honeycrisp. They have a great option where you can fill a 1/2 peck bag for $5 with whatever you like. (Pro-tip: For best bang-for-buck, choose more small apples rather than fewer large apples.) + Pumpkins. TONS of shapes and sizes. I think I remember they were $5. + Plums. Local & delicious. + Muscadine & scuppernong grapes. And jellies made from them (see next). + Jellies. So many wonderful kinds and blends made fresh: peach, mint-apple, local grapes, etc. + "Butters". Do you like apple butter? How about some PUMPKIN butter? Or sweet potato butter? These are amazing. + LOCAL HONEY! And multiple varieties, no less! + Various pickled items, ranging from bread & butter pickles to jalapeno chow chow to pickled okra. + Sorbets & popsicles. Made fresh on site with many of the delicious items. There were a few non-local things, like bananas, pineapple, etc., too. And they have a Friday fondue night, but we haven't checked that out yet. Obviously, the selection rotates year-round-- the last few watermelons were there on our first visit. And as another reviewer noted, the location is only open seasonally, so don't come mid-winter. The owner is great-- very well-spoken and kind. And they take credit cards. Pokemon Go players may also be happy since there's a Pokestop located here, too. A produce stand in Durham city limits that isn't the fake hipster farmer charging a 400% markup with tales of how their "organic, pesticide free produce will not only cure cancer but make you more loved than MLK" BS you find at most boutique-y farmer's markets. Perkins is the real deal with a couple upgrades. Major points of awesomeness listed: -Looks small from Barbee Rd: it's literally the owner's house BUT the parking area and actual produce stand/shop is in his backyard and it's HUGE. Like you could fit 10-15 cars easy. -Produce is FRESH: not all local but local-ish. Owner knows where everything comes from -Produce is GOOD: finally found perfectly ripe peaches, local honey, etc in Durham! -Price is REASONABLE: not as cheap as Wally Mart or Target but quality is 500x better, and you can pick and choose how much you want so you get the best stuff. -Owner has run the place since he was a teenager. He tells a neat story of how the stand was around in the 70s and he sorta fell into it from his ?dad? or someone close to him. -Vendors come on weekends to sell specialty products and other stuff. CHECK THIS PLACE OUT IF YOU ARE TIRED OF THE FARMER'S MARKET RIPPING YOU OFF and having those 'farmers' secretly sneering at how they got you to buy a tomato for $5. The produce is high-quality and certainly a good value. We've been going weekly all summer, particularly for the peaches. However, during the last two visits 2-3 employees each time were not wearing masks despite being inside the stand in close proximity to customers. There are prominently posted "masks required to enter" signs, and customers were all masked up. I called to share my concerns about masking with the owner, simply hoping he'd remind employees to wear masks when inside the store . . . instead I got quite an earful about how it's hot and he doesn't plan to "micromanage" his employees, which was definitely non-reassuring. Unfortunately, I had a situation that has now caused me to pause and rethink visiting in the future? Today was my 3rd or 4th visit (I've been going nearly every week since finding out about it), they require masks to enter the market and I've found at my previous visits, everyone adhered to this request with no incident, this is the reason I felt comfortable patronizing. As I have a compromised immune system due to RA, I have not shopped for my own groceries since the beginning of March, I've been utilizing all delivery. Unfortunately today, a woman running their checkout was unmasked the entirety of my visit and I had to check out with her and I hate that this happened, as it was the one place I could get out to and get great deals on veg & fruit! I absolutely love visiting Perkins and fell in love with the Cherry Cider on my first visit. In fact, we returned 2 weeks later just to pick up 7 jugs. Along with the fresh produce, I just love the sense of history and heritage connected with the Orchard, the family, and the community. If you live in the south Durham area and want fresh produce this is the spot. I had no idea this place existed until a friend of mine turned me on to them. They are located behind a house so it can be hard to miss. They have plenty of signage on the side of the road so keep a look out. Unlike many local farmers markets these folks are open 7 days a week and from 9am-7 or 8pm so you have plenty of time to check them out on your way home from work. They carry local eggs, bacon, jarred goods, honey, plants, herbs, flowers, fruits, & vegetables. The staff here are very friendly and knowledgeable about the products they sell. It's never super crowed and there is plenty of parking available. On my most recent trip I purchased some mums and a few pumpkins for my front porch. The quality here is better than that of local grocery stores for sure. If you didn't know they existed before, now you do, so go check them out xoxo read more

This is my favorite new discovery. Alex, age 23, has done the most amazing job. He carries dozens and dozens of local fruits and vegetables, which provides many local farmers a venue for their produce. There's also homemade jellies and jams and fresh fruit ice pops that he makes. There is honey and the most delicious cheese that comes from the western mountains, I believe if he had any free time at all, Alex should be lecturing at the local high schools about how hard work and perseverance creates a thriving business that he can be proud of. I told him today that I'm proud of him even though I don't know him, his work ethic is just amazing. Please support this wonderful young man. read more
