Great experience! Staff were super friendly and they had someone directing cars where to park since it was a little busy. We had the choice of 2 different sized buckets and selected the gallon bucket for $17. I believe it's cash only (that's what I had read online), so we paid with cash. Even with it a bit busy it was still easy to distance from others. There were sooo many perfect strawberries to pick, and it smelled sooo good! Can't wait to eat all of them and make something fun! read more

This is a super cute family farm that has a surprisingly sophisticated strawberry self-pick service. They have several huge fields, so you can wear a mask and physical distance while enjoying the fresh air, sunshine, and beautiful fresh strawberries. It was $14 for a gallon. It's cash only and I recommend checking the hours and availability on their website before heading over. "Local Durham farm, best known for strawberry picking" Best known as an excellent spot for strawberry picking in spring, this place and its owners are fantastic. We come often in May and pick strawberries, and the quality is outstanding-- SO much nicer than store-bought ones-- but they do tend to go bad within just a few days, so eat, use, or freeze fast! The price is great, too... we got a MASSIVE tray of strawberries for $13. (They give you cardboard trays for picking and transporting the strawberries home.) In addition to picking your own, there are sometimes prepicked strawberries ready for purchase as well. A few tips on this place: 1) They are not always open even during their business hours, so CALL FIRST. Sometimes the crop has been overpicked, sometimes it's just too wet, etc. They leave a message on their machine daily stating if they're open that day. 2) CASH ONLY -- they do not take credit cards. 3) Remember that this place is open in other seasons besides spring for vegetables and even educational farm tours for area schools. This locally owned strawberry farm is all about the berries! You'll find parking on the grass and can pick up a flat cardboard boxes for free to pick your berries in. The current price is $1.85/pound for pick-your-own-berries and $4/pound if you want to just pick them up yourself. They've got rows and rows of strawberry plants and will direct you where to pick (note, you'll pick past the white flags, and move the flags are you pick). I visited on an overcast Friday, late morning in mid-May, and was surprised by how few people their were. We we quickly able to pick a large box of ripe, juicy strawberries (and popped a couple in our mouths as well). It's cash or check only when you pay, and they also sell strawberry jam, pound cake and honey. They have bees on site that pollinate the strawberry "brushes" and they harvest honey from them. It's a sustainable, eco friendly farm and one that I'd happily return to. Friendly staff and a great experience for all ages. Make sure to call the farm ahead of your visit to confirm they're open for business and daily picking, they have a recorded message that is recorded daily! read more

I'm posting this a little late since we were there last for strawberry picking in April/May. However, situation was extremely safe and well planned out so that we never came in contact with other people. Paid for our bucket and went picking. Strawberries were fantastic and farm itself is really beautiful. You can call in the morning to see if they are picking that day and just to hear Mr Waller's voice was calming and reassuring that life goes on. read more

Waller Family Farm is a great "you-pick" strawberry farm close to Duke. Our lab likes to go as a group after lunch in the spring. It's convenient and the strawberries are pretty cheap at $1.35 a pound. I don't think they are certified organic but I see a lot of bugs out there so that seems like a good sign ;) They also sell pre-picked strawberries if you don't have time to pick (or it's too hot for you). Additionally, they sell other in season veggies that they grow on the farm (ie squash and zucchini) and local honey. You can bring your own container or they will provide you with one. And remember: no credit cards, cash only! read more

I have been to the Waller farm three times this year to pick strawberries. Relative to store-bought strawberries, theirs are very reasonably priced and flavorful. The staff have been friendly in my experience and they allow you to bring tupperware (just weigh it before you start to pick. One issue with the farm is that because its so close to Durham and Chapel Hill, a lot of people pick here and there really isn't that much of a strawberry picking area (maybe 50 rows, which area each about a tenth of a mile) to support all the people. Hence, it can be somewhat of a mixed bag, especially if you go towards the end of a week later in the day. In that vein, I've gotten good strawberries--but they're maybe not as big as I'd like or as easy to find. (Side recommendation-Lyon farm in Creedmoor for a further away, less visited strawberry farm). But honestly, they're a business relying on people to buy their berries, so its good that people are coming in. Make sure they're open by checking their Facebook page or calling before coming in. Side note-One time I saw ducks walking through the field, which everybody thought was funny. This review may be biased because I don't have any other fruit-picking experiences to compare to, but this was a phenomenal experience. The owners are very kind and the directions are extremely straightforward and easy. I had no problems whatsoever on my first berry-picking experience, and it is a thrill to find the reddest, best strawberries. They're ripe and delicious, and only $1.50 a lb. Yay! :) read more

This was my first time strawberry picking and it was so fast and easy at Waller Family Farms. Since I haven't been to other farms, I don't know if this is standard, but they have a flag set up that makes it very easy to find perfectly ripe strawberries (start picking at the flag and leave it where you end). Containers are provided so don't worry about bringing something. The staff was very friendly and price was reasonable for pesticide free strawberries ($1.65/lb). I already made strawberry jam from the whole 15 lbs we picked last weekend so we will be back soon to stock up the freezer for smoothies! They only accept cash or check! read more

The price per pound was $1.55 this summer, which can't really be beat for the freshest possible produce. We brought our own containers and walked away with FOURTEEN pounds of strawberries.
