They have been hosting our church group for breakfast for an extended period, and did an admirable job on this morning, handling nearly two dozen visitors. I appreciated our server, Stacia, as she managed such a large group by herself and without issues. Always kind, pleasant. My "Build A Breakfast" was tasty, matched my order, and was a good portion size. I like that they have Coca-Cola products. Clean surroundings, restrooms good. Parking was more than ample, with disabled capability evident. Since it was my first visit, I was not aware of the "55" Menu, and was made aware by a fellow customer during our meal. You will see many seniors eating here but dont let that deter you from eating there. Occasionally you will find gathering of people or corporate people dining at this restaurant during the week. Their menu offers a decent variety of dishes and dessert thereafter. Even though i have not tried all of their dishes, cakes and cookies, i believe that they could tone down on their sugar levels on their desserts. Not beneficial to low levels diabetics. I joined as a member and get bogo online coupon every other week but i go for their 20% deals and get cajun fish and shrimp and a breakfast meal for takeout. This is 2 days worth of meals for me. I went there for breakfast at 8 am on a recent Monday. There were no other customers except one, so I had great service. I ordered a dinner entree with no problem or delay. I do wonder though why a Perkins would have no customers at that hour. I guess they rely on passive marketing- whomever shows up shows up, but perhaps advertising a morning special on their local social media pages would be to their advantage. From a strictly business perspective, the scheduled rebranding mentioned in the media should happen sooner rather than later, as Perkins of yesteryear isn't pulling in the people. read more

It was our last evening in Iowa for the Summer of 2013, and there was an opportunity for my Son to spend some time with his cousins. My Sister was just returning from a triathlon in Ceder Rapids, and suggested that we all meet up at this Perkin's in Ankeny. The backup choice was the Olive Garden next door. I rolled my eyes and suggested that we all meet and the house in Ames. However, my Mom flatly told me that she didn't want the hassle of cooking and hosting a lot of people in the House. The other consideration was that out of the 10 folks coming to Dinner, 3 were very hungry teenage boys. So some Des Moines "fine dining" option was out of the question. Large quantities of food at a reasonable price was the ticket. So Perkins it was and for what it is, I was impressed. We were seated promptly, the extended Family had a lot of room, the wait staff was attentive, the menu was extensive (including all day breakfast options), the food came out fast, and the quantities were generous and delicious. The total bill (including tax but before tip) for all 10 of us was about $100, which I thought was a heck of a deal. Stayed in Des Moines for the weekend and decided to try Perkins for my long drive home. I walked in and there were two other customers. When I walked in, the greeter asked if I wanted a booth or table. She informed me that someone would be right with me. Ten minutes later someone finally came to my table. Service is extremely slow for only having four customers in the restaurant. Scrambled eggs weren't that good either. They were like thin paper instead of actual scrambled. Wait staff and team do the best they can with people that show up to work. The few that do show up, get crushed by the large amount of online orders and managing that process. Which leads to a slower lobby and restaurant seating experience. Re-prioritize those that come in and tip your staff. It isn't that hard to fix the issue but leadership awareness is missing at the Corporate level. read more

I thought I was going to write another generic review about Perkins when stepping in today, but that changed after I took a look at their menu and had their food. Their menu was much different than the ones I've been to in Des Moines. They had offered some special items I have no seen at other places. I got the Tremendous Twelve platter and my fiance got the Philly Cheesesteak Stack. The quality of the food was slightly better than the ones in Des Moines which was a pleasant surprise. He was quick to bring everything and notify us of specials. One of the best servers we have had!! The amount of food we got was a feast. Ordered the bacon flip and hubby ordered the bacon omlet on their special bacon menu and both were delicious! Served hot and fresh. Service was bad had to wait for the manager to seat us ! There was only ten tables being used! The manager was rude. It was the morning manager on May 31, 1923. I asked him for napkins he didn't bring them he, mom had to ask him for napkins. He brought her some and none for me the food I ordered the steak was so dried out. I couldn't hardly cut it with a knife. The grilled asparagus was so soft and mushy. I couldn't even cut it with a knife. All I could eat was the tips The manager started to be nice after we got our food because he was working on the tip up until then he was very rude. Our empty plate sat there through the appetizer, the salad, and he took it just before the food came, and he walked by us. I couldn't even tell you how manytimes he walked by us and left that stuff on the table my mom ordered the rice and the fish with the shrimp on top. The rice was very dry. The fish was overcooked in the asparagus, was the same as mine over cooked so much you couldn't hardly cut it, and all you can eat off of it was the tips again not only was the waiter was rude, but also it took us an hour to get our food. It wasn't busy. There was no rush hour. It was after lunch, and there was just no need for it to be that bad that long I won't be going here again. This is the second time I've eaten at this location. The first time the service and the food was horrible. This time the food was wonderfully delicious, I had the meatloaf. The staff was another thing. Staff did not enforce mask wearing. Also one of the staff members willingly hugged an elderly customer not once, not twice, but three times. Iowa is in the top five of covid infections in the USA. When I received my meal my drink was empty halfway through it. I did not get a refill from the waitress until I was completed with my meal. And she brought me the wrong drink. I don't think I'll be coming back for a third time at this location. read more

Our party of five stopped by to have a Memorial Day brunch. The waitress was friendly, but after a little while completely disappeared soon after taking our order. 25 minutes or so passed, when we inquired to one of the other waitresses about the status of our order. As it turned out the cooks had "messed up" our order, which supposedly accounted for the delay. The orders then came out in a piecemeal fashion, with three of us receiving ours a full 15+ minutes before our remaining party members received their meals. We were in the store 90 minutes between the time we were seated and the time the last person in our party finished their meal. To their credit, Perkins comped our entire meal due to the delay and inconvenience. Nevertheless, this was way too much time and hassle to wait for a breakfast meal (How long does it take to make eggs and pancakes??). Hopefully this restaurant can turn things around since the building is nice and the food offerings are diverse and pretty tasty. read more

If I had never been to a different Perkins before, this one would have ruined it for me. We were seated quickly and given a good table, thankfully. We were also greeted in fairly good time. Our waitress never brought our drinks. Thankfully Kisha (who was absolutely awesome) delivered the food to our table and saw we had no drinks and quickly corrected it. The drinks themselves were disappointing- our waters tasted gross, the cranberry juice was okay and the raspberry lime HiC was nasty. Food didn't take too long but that's were the good stopped. Biscuit was hard and seemed old, the bacon was laughably puny, avocado slices had brown spots, hollandaise was barely there, gravy was skimpy, and so on. The hashbrowns were pretty good though. I peeked into the restroom and it looked average. As for paying the bill, I can't honestly say if it was the fault of the staff or customers but there was a line so long it went across over half the restaurant and it took longer for us to pay our pricey bill than it did for us to eat. Every time we've come here there's been either a 45 min wait on a weekday low period, a waitress who came to our table twice and never again or waited at the pay counter for almost 10 min with no employee present. Today I finally encountered a new issue: the smell. While it may be due to the pumpkins carved by the door the entire restaurant smells like boiled eggs in the worst way possible. May I just start this review by saying that the food was absolutely stellar. But, only 10 minutes into being sat down the waitress came by and said that she was the only server tonight. My group understood completely and the night went on. But then 20 minutes later when our water glasses were empty and we still hadn't received our food we began to be suspicious. Then we heard other groups and a host say that there was only a cook and a host that evening and the server has walked out for unknown reasons. But even though they were busy, the two people who helped us were very nice and they showed genuine compassion. Our bill was 25% off for the chaos which we appreciated. The food was amazing and came out fresh and hot. Rosemary was our server and she was extremely professional and polite and passed by multiple times if we needed anything without seeming like hovering. my friend & i decided to come to have dinner here the other night. we go in & wait a few minutes to be seated & get sat. our waitress took our order almost immediately. we started with the mozzerella sticks. they had an odd amount of liquid come out of them, almost like cheese juice. we both got one of the melts. they were great but the fries lacked crispyness & flavor. our waitress was amazing! she got us drinks as needed, got us an overly big bowl of ranch like we both wanted. & so we wanted to give her a tip when we paid! or not? you go up to the register to pay. we were having an issue figuring out which button was correct to tip because there were % & custom amounts. we clicked custom & realized wed rather do a % so we asked the cashier how to go back. the button she told us to press, closed the transaction. the manager said oh well we cant do anything. okay but we don't have cash & would really love to tip our waitress! we had to buy cookies to tip her. we wanted our waitress to get paid for the night as she very much deserves & the manager didn't seem to care. we know that perkins isnt paying them much at all & tips are important. shame on the manager! just void the transaction & re-ring it. we had no issue paying for what we needed, we just wanted to give our waitress a tip. read more

We recently had an early dinner here; I ordered the sliced hot turkey which came with stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy and a vegetable. Had ordered it on previous occasions and it was tolerable. This time the stuffing was Stove Top or similar off brand boxed stuffing. No mistaking it was boxed. And all dried up like bread crumbs. Brought it to the server's attention and she shrugged and said, "I believe it" and walked away. Really? Are you kidding me? Stove Top stuffing served up at a restaurant? The time we visited before this, we were grossed out when our server cleared tables of other diners dirty dishes/glassware and swept the floor and then came out with our meal. This was always my favorite restaurant to eat at years ago I went there a couple months ago and it was ok nothing great but nothing was wrong. Then yesterday we decided to go back and have breakfast in the evening and my wife and I each ordered an omelet. We also got kids meals for the kids. When the food arrived my wife's omelet was a greasy plate with a tiny little piece of omelet some burnt ham and almost no cheese along with a tiny thin portion of hash browns that is actually smaller than the kids meal portion. I got an everything omelet also it was loaded with what seamed like a whole green pepper and a few other things and extra grease. The pancakes were good. Overall I can't recommend this restaurant to anyone other than kids they had good portions and were $6 cheaper than an adult omelet.
