Bakers Square has been in the Des Moines area for decades and I have many a fond memory of having lunch there with my dad. It's family restaurant status continues making them a worthwhile option if you are looking for a solid meal at a reasonable price. Our favorite is to have their "four square" breakfast v(for dinner, of course), where you get bro select your four favorite breakfast items to build a custom meal. The pancakes and eggs are always spot on and delicious. Also with checking out is their smash burger Monday night: a well-prepared hamburger and a side for a great price. Pie is not usually my thing, but when I am done n the mood, Bakers Square is a first thought. Many options, all good, and the occasional limited time pies to expand your sweet tooth horizons. My company used this location a few times for pie orders. We easily put in the order online and order the pies a week or even a few days ahead of time. They are always ready with no problems when we show up to get them. They have set the expectations higher and we keep returning every year. read more

I stopped here before an appointment and had a quick breakfast. The door was opened at 8 to a small waiting crowd. We were all quickly seated and the single waitress handled us all in a very efficient manner. I was impressed. The place is clean and nicely lit. I am guessing it used to be a Dennys or something. But the redecoration is nice and comfortable. I ordered a skillet breakfast with a side of pancakes and coffee. The skillet was a bit too oily for my taste and I was only able to enjoy half of it before I lost my appetite. However the pancakes were nice and spongy with a great flavor. The coffee is not my favorite but it worked and was hot. I would not make a special trip out ver to this side of town for breakfast but if you are nearby this would be a good choice. read more

We only had pie, but enjoyed our conversation with the management. I told them I had previously been a regular customer of the chain, but then like Village Inn things started falling apart. Was explained that they have the same corporate, but the structure is different. The pie was 'good'. Not great and I wouldn't travel to have pie and coffee. I had a placed a pickup order for a blueberry lemon pie, when I went to pick it up I realized I had placed an order for two weeks ahead of time and they didn't have my order. 3.5 stars tonight. The honey mustard crispy chicken salad was crispy and full of black olives, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, and spiced pecans. We also shared a hot patty melt, and it was good. A variety of dinners and sandwiches are on the menu. It seems that the pies are their specialty, with 15 different kinds. Too bad we were too full to order some. No complaints about Frank, our waiter, or any other servers, except after asking three times and 25 minutes later finally got a to-go cup for my drink. A real mixed bag! We have a meal there from time to time. Normally, the food is pretty good...depending on what you order...and who the cook is. On our last visit, the food was certainly up to par, but the service was terrible. That ruins the entire experience. We normally have very good service, so this was definitely a disappointment. I got the blue pancakes, which at the start I should have known was a mistake. They were way over mixed, the 'supreme cream' was subpar if anything. The blueberries were obviously from a can and tasted pretty awful. The hash browns were a bit overdone for my liking, but the eggs were great. Ordered for a to-go night tonight after eating here plenty in the past. We may not order here again. I'm not sure how this place charges the prices they do fir the food they serve. Cobb salad had old egg, expired salad mix (near liquefied spinach leafs), 1 tiny bit of avocado not fit for a sample. The fries were soggy and over-seasoned. The kids mac was hard and crusty. The roll was soggy. But we got pie slices so still okay, right? It's what Baker's Square is known for. Nope! Meringue is tacky and chewy. Clearly not fresh. I'm so disappointed. If you like pie, you'll love Baker's Square. I've tried several varieties of their pies and haven't had a bad one yet. Today we went in and the service was pretty good. We were surprised there weren't very many people there on a Saturday evening. While the pie and the service were good, the rest of the food was hit or miss. The cobb salad and funny face pancakes were a hit. The omelet was actually kind of burnt and I would have sent it back if it had been mine. The "chicken fried steak" was a huge disappointment as it wasn't the thick, homemade kind but rather two small, machine rendered patties that you'd find in TV dinners. I won't make that mistake twice. Pies that were winners today included French Silk, Strawberry Rhubarb and Caramel Pecan Silk Supreme. The Pumpkin Pecan was good, but felt like a half made pumpkin and pecan pie had a child. The parts were good but the sum of the parts was not. Essentially nothing more than cafeteria food, and they boast "America's Best Pies." I don't see how this is so, because they're nothing more than frozen manufactured pies from a place like Sysco. I "called" Bakers Square directly to order 3-pieces of pie for pickup Saturday. Unfortunately due to some unforeseen circumstances I wasn't going to be able to pick up as scheduled. I called to "CANCEL." Order. As I understood lady I spoke w/the order would be cancelled/refunded next day as she would leave info for next day managers. On Site I received a call that they(BS) was still holding my order. The person then said NO they were still there. She proceeded to tell me the order would have to be cancelled via/GRUBHUB. I don't even understand how they were even involved since the original order was done directly threw Bakers Square with a "Customer Pick up originally.. Anyway GRUBHUB proceeded to tell me they couldn't refund the $$ because the "food" had already been prepared. I'm sorry they cut three pieces of pie. Upon arrival, we stood and waited for a good five minutes to be seated and the place was not very busy. Once seated, it took a while to get drinks and then took even longer to get our orders taken. I had the choose 3 of the four category meal and went with the tomato basil soup, buffalo chicken salad and pie. My boyfriend selected the cream of chicken and wild rice soup and a chicken pot pie. It seemed like forever for our food to come out. When it did, my salad was made of crappy lettuce, small chicken slices and hardly and feta cheese. Very disappointing. My boyfriend usually likes their chicken pot pie but was not very happy with it this time. It was overloaded with chicken and poor quality chicken at that. My family used to love Bakers Square. We would go get a slice of pie after every sporting event when I was growing up. I remember eating dinner with my grandparents there on Saturday nights, but it's been a couple years since we've visited. Last night, we went to pick up a French silk pie to eat after dinner. We could tell that something was up the minute we sliced into the pie. It was a runny consistency, and when we ate it, it had a strange aftertaste. Long story short, my entire family has food poisoning. Even my youngest, who just ate a small sliver of the pie, has been throwing up all night. Not a fan but people seemed to like the pies. I ordered the savory pot roast and the it tasted like it was a frozen meal. The mashed potatoes were quite lumpy. I ate the meat and left the potatoes and carrots. I think I should have opted for the breakfast menu but I probably would choose an IHOP instead. Only giving it a three because I didn't order a pie. Those pies looked good! I ordered a California Fritata. Well, the picture looked better than it actually was. I did order Tomato Juice because it sounded good and the tomato juice was delicious! My two friends that came with me ordered off the "Four Square" menu. All of the items on Four Square are breakfast items. You pick four. Both of my friends had great waffles and omlets and stuff. I think that is where it's at for this. Order from the FOUR SQUARE menu. Pie is not good here -- My Pecan pie looked standard, but what was supposed to be the yummy filling beneath the pecans was composed of a gelatin that broke apart in geometrical pieces. Been jonesing for some pot pies as of late and have found that a lot of places don't offer this fine american staple. The guiness pie at The Royal Mile is fantastic, but I'm here in WDSM and want one now. BSR has a decent representation of one. A good all encompassing crust (Perkins just throws a layer of dough over a bowl), and a good mix of meat and veggies. The mid-week crowd was light and the service was attentive. We haven't been back since March because of their lackadaisical COVID housekeeping. We weren't able to use our spring birthday pie slice since they were closed. I assumed they would take them now that they were open. I was going to use my 20% off military rate but the waitress offered free pie today. I get to the register and he took off the pie but not the military discount. I would never have gone there if I had known they wouldn't honor their discount. Other cashiers have rung in the birthday pie on a separate ticket when I used a BOGO coupon with the birthday pie. I was not impressed with the female manager walking around the dining room with her mask worn on her chin as a chin diaper. The spraying of sanitizer on the table followed by immediately wiping it off with a paper towel does nothing. The sanitizers say to leave on 6 minutes before wiping off to have enough time to kill viruses. Most customers in there were walking around with no masks while coughing. It was a cough emporium going on around us with no plexiglass shields installed on the seatbacks as Perkins has done. We will not be back to this Petri palace because I want to live. I have worked hard to not catch it and I don't appreciate a store's lax policies to endanger my health. Disposable Xerox menus were provided then collected after ordering. This looks like they just hand them out to the next schmuck. The CDC does not recommend the use of gaiters as masks because the filter material is so thin. read more
