Ordered my all time southern favorite- biscuits and gravy - the gravy was smooth and creamy with nice small chunks of sausage, but the bottom of the flat biscuits hard - reminded me when my mom would have them set out a while. The bacon was fried hard if you like it that way, yet tasty. The wait staff was very welcoming to their neighborhood regular seniors whom seemed to enjoy their daily meal of choice, in the small nondescript atmosphere. The sign on the door ( caught my eye) about the high prices of eggs forcing them to charge the extra .50 cents per egg is even more reason why we should support our local small scale cafes especially places where neighbors seem to love to conjugate. read more

My husband I love little cafes, so we had to stop here on our way through. The staff were very friendly and attentive. We ordered coffees and water, too bad no french vanilla, but the coffee was good! I ordered the pancake platter with bacon. My husband the B & G with 2 eggs over easy and some sausage links. Very diner-y vibe. Sitting at the counter enhanced that experience, despite being in a strip mall. It was quite busy around 10am on a Sunday. Clearly a popular choice. I chose the pancake platter which includes 2 eggs and 2 slices of bacon (eggs your way and meat options are available). It was HUGE. Seriously, way to much for one human to eat. They had a half order and when my eyes had stopped bugging out over the size of my meal, I was wishing I had chosen the half order. The pancakes were fluffy. Scrambled eggs were good. Bacon had a great flavor. Only reason I didn't rate a five was that Husband had asked for extra crispy hashbrowns, and they definitely were not. Service was great. My daughter & I are here for a tournament and we wanted a late breakfast. We enjoyed our meal . We had the blueberry pancakes platter and thank you for the server telling me that they are huge- I then requested them to be smaller and I still could not finish them . Seated immediately upon arrival on a Sunday morning. Staff was quick to say hello and take our drink orders. We had great service with regular drink refills, and our waitress gave us a heads up on the busy kitchen so we ordered a delicious cinnamon roll for the table appetizer. When out of town, I always want to find a local joint for breakfast. This place did not disappoint! My kids had the cinnamon rolls, which were enormous. The wife sampled the breakfast burrito, full of delicious eggs and meat. For me, I got the large breakfast plate; complete with to 3 scrambled eggs, 3 crispy slices of bacon, a generous helping of hash browns cooked perfectly, 2 slices of toast and a side of sausage gravy to top it off. First time here. Seating is a combination of tables, a few booths, and a counter. No high tops. Pretty busy on a Friday morning at 930ish AM, but there were a few open tables. There was a "Please be seated" sign in the entry. We made our way to a table. We were greeted within a minute or two and our drink orders were taken. Pretty straight forward breakfast and lunch menus on the table... We looked over the menu while we were waiting for our drinks and were ready to order when they arrived. I knew our server from the church I attend... So service was spectacular. I didn't know she worked there...it was just a nice surprise. :) I ordered the chicken fried steak and eggs and Heather ordered a breakfast combo. With coffee and a drink it was $24.81 before tip. The food was excellent. Obviously home cooked and not nuked in the back. The two steak medallions threw me off at first, but they were fried perfectly. Having two pretty much doubled the crunch factor with double the "edge." Eggs came just as ordered. The hashbrowns were nicely cooked...browned and crispy. Couldn't have been any better. I'm a pepper guy so ignore it in my pictures. It was added by me after the food arrived. Our server checked on us several times and our glasses never hit empty. Your server brings you your bill at the table and you pay at the counter near the entrance. I didn't pay as much attention to the receipt as I should have (other than the total), but a sign on the counter indicated they charge a 3% surcharge on all sales and discount that 3% if you pay with cash. Like it or not it's becoming more common. Great service, excellent food, fairly priced. Definitely worth returning. read more

An unassuming yet wonderful cafe/diner located among other shops in a strip of businesses. While traveling across country we were looking for a place to get breakfast around lunch time. This cafe is where we ended up going and we were glad we did. The staff was friendly, in that warm way you would want when visiting family. The restaurant was clean and while it was busy there were plenty of tables free and we seated ourselves without hassle. The menu had all the items you would want from a breakfast menu. We ordered the biscuits and gravy, a side of bacon and a kid's French toast. The food took an appropriate amount of time for fresh made plates. The full biscuits and gravy was 4 biscuit halves smothered in excellent sausage gravy. The bacon was cooked to perfection crisp, yet juicy, salty and savory. Really wonderful stuff and it hit the spot after having been on the road and suffering through fast food on the turn pikes. The French toast was also perfect. The coffee hot and fresh and the price affordable and reasonable. If I'm back in the area I will seek out this fine establishment again and will not hesitate to recommend it to any friends or family traveling this way. My gorgeous wife brought me here for breakfast this Saturday afternoon. What a nice treat. First they had the Iowa Hawkeye Football game on! It's seat yourself. The place had a steady crowd with several rooms which was nice if you wanted somewhere quiet to sit. I started off with a coffee and it's a very large cup. Nothing special about the coffee. The food is reasonably priced for the portion. I choose the breakfast burrito with an extra item and choose the hashbrowns. The burrito is average size and contains sausage, ham, bacon, hashbrowns, eggs, cheese, green pepper, and onion. I thought it was excellent with good quality ingredients. Seamed like they use Pace Salsa which is OK. There was plenty of everything in the burrito with a nice soft shell. An eggcellent start to the day. The hashbrowns were very good, nice and crispy. I definitely want to try them again without cheese. The menu has lots of options and I look forward to going back and trying different things. The place has a steady stream of local customers. At the end of our brunch my husband fully enjoyed his meal and experience. It is not typical for him to say he likes a place or not. He usually is indifferent. Nicely spaced tables but because this place is popular you get a lot of voices around you. My H and I were still able to have nice comfortable conversations without it being over powering though. The Corner Cafe is the quintessential Main Street diner, small, spotless and friendly. My best pal and I dropped in for lunch, and I felt like I was transported back about 55 years. The hot roast beef sandwich was exactly what I remembered from my favorite lunch spots in Nevada (Iowa), Ames and Marshalltown. And our young waitress (probably the youngest person in the place) was attentive and cordial, certainly deserving the tips we gave her. I noticed a few reviews that complained about the coffee. I think those writers were accustomed to weak coffee that you can see through. For me, it hit the spot, as good and strong as what my wife and I make at home. The only drawback I found was that the table knife was the kind that Grandma called a butter knife. It had no cutting edge to slice that wonderful roast beef. Finally, I must mention that the breakfast menu is very tempting. I have to try it the next time. And there certainly will be a next time for me. read more

Excellent breakfast. We found this on telp. Everyone complained as we navigated here from the hotel. The short trip was well worth it. We had to wait about 10 minutes to get seated. A local came in and said it was the first time she ever had to wait, and she was about 80 years old. Food was great and the meal 34.48 before tip, for four meals. Corner cafe, "we're nowhere near a corner." Stopped here on a whim for breakfast with my son. We we're seated right away and a waitress came to get our drink order. They have bar seating and table seating, and what looked like a private room. Menus are already on the table which was very convenient! I took some time to look at the menu which consists of breakfast and lunch. The prices are fair and the portions were good. Food made to order so it takes time which is good! Ended up just getting the basic breakfast plate with a biscuit instead of toast and a side of gravy. Coffee was good, service was good. We will be back with the hubby. This is a no-nonsense, non-descript plaza diner that serves up hefty portions of breakfast items with (thankfully) half portion options. I've been here a few times on different days of the week. And the consistent theme I recognized is that the clientele is of the more... Uh... Golden aged (like the Golden Girls) demographic. Not a good/bad thing, just an observation. My guess is this place has a lot of "regulars" who frequent the booths and tables. Anyway, the food and coffee are decent. Interestingly, the eggs benedict menu item is cheaper than most of their other breakfast selections. The servers are attentive and the wait time for food is fast. All in all, I can't think of anything extraordinary about this place, but I get the food and service I'd expect from a well-run diner. And I think that's a positive quality in and of itself. read more
