The waitress was great very informative and very friendly. We got the chicken fried steak breakfast and we also ordered the brioche French toast and short stack. The country fried steak was perfect crispy on the outside nice crunch to it and gravy was thick not runny. The short stacks were nice and fluffy. The French toast was made perfectly nice and buttery soft. The eggs were scrambled moist not dried out. Bacon were crispy and the had browns were very good not burnt or hard. A great little family type restaurant. I know it's a chain, and they have been closed in many areas of the country. This one has the old time family feel. They still have the pies and pastries near the register. The staff is very nice. The food is excellent. And the chocolate chocolate cake is delicious. I am probably putting on weight just thinking about it, but an occasional indulgence is ok. Unfortunately, nothing is cheap anymore. This meal was not expensive, tasted great, was well prepared, and a good deal. I highly recommend this location - near the airport. I didn't pick this place but my friend from KS did. We actually came here twice during my time here in Des Moines. Not complaining. You know it's breakfast time when we come to Perkin's family restaurant. They're like IHOP and AppleBee's rolled into one. I enjoyed coming to Perkins due to the fact that I can - and did - have breakfast food on command and not be time gated because it's only served at certain times of the day. With that said, we arrived here on a Friday evening and also on a Saturday evening on an October 2022 weekend. It was my friend's pick and it was about less than a mile from the Holiday Inn Express hotel we were staying at, so the location was ideal for us to come here twice. On my first time here at this location, I ended up having the NY steak platter that came with pancakes. The second time around, I got the wild scramble thing that they had going on. I still can't believe we came here twice, but it was simple and elegant at the same time. We didn't have to really think and we were already hungry when we arrived here and after running a marathon nearby at Gray's Lake, it was something to celebrate anyway regardless. The service here was good and friendly, although not terribly fast, but still positive. The overall experience here at this Perkin's restaurant in Des Moines, IA was pretty good. Both experiences went well and is good and it happened after 7:30pm on a Friday and Saturday night in October 2022. The restaurant itself was clean and when we were there the restaurant was half empty, especially on nights that are usually busier than normal. Maybe people eat earlier here, we don't know. Still, we got seated almost immediately and it was nice to sit back and chill with my friend from Kansas City. We actually sat in a booth, which was comfortable. I had ordered pancakes with my wild scramble thing, and they gave me extra butter, so I had to wipe the extra off I didn't need. The service was attentive, which was good. The restaurant itself was clean and the ambiance was nice. I even asked the guy at the counter if they offered any discounts for food after a certain time, and he rebuffed me saying there's no discounts, which is too bad. They can move more product if they discounted it after certain hours, like 9pm or something. For the most part though, it was nice coming here, although twice during a weekend was plenty good for me. The steak was cooked good, but Perkin's isn't a steakhouse, but it really hit the spot on vacation. This Perkin's restaurant is located at 2000 SW McKinley Avenue in Des Moines, IA. They accept major credit cards, as well as cash. It was nice that they seated us away from people, for the COVID thing. As far as parking goes, they have a large amount of parking spaces to choose from. Best thing to do is to come during the non peak times and secure your spot here. If you are familiar with Des Moines' public transportation system, consider choosing the best routes to get here. There's always Uber and Lyft just in case you need them. It was really not my choice to come here, since my friend was driving me around town. As long as the food is good and I love breakfast food. Seems like the next best thing in this town without driving alot. There's a few hotels nearby too on Fleur Drive. Probably walkable from there, but we decided to drive. If you love breakfast any time of day or night, consider Perkins if you're in Des Moines! 4.0 stars for the overall experience. 3.0 stars for the prices. 4.5 stars for the food and ambiance. I wanted a little sit-down-style restaurant during my overnight stay in Des Moines. I was staying at the hotel down the road and decided to take a stroll to see what I could find. The place was practically empty when I arrived, but there was a handful of servers and bussers cruising around. When I sat, I was immediately greeted by my service, who was super friendly. The menu has only a handful of items on it because it is their "Holiday Menu" I ordered the safest thing, which was the Turkey dinner. It took just over 25 minutes to get it delivered, and when it arrived, the Turkey and the gravy were hot, but everything else could. I mixed it all just to make it all warm since I didn't know when it would come back if I sent it back. When I checked out, th female manager was not the most friendly person. I am pretty site. Even if you stop in at most peak times, this Perkins seems to have a seat ready for you. I think it's common to associate Perkins with Baker's Square because of the pie connection. If you're going for pie, Baker's Square for the win. Perkins has good pies but few meet greatness. If you're going for classic, comfort foods, Perkins for the win. Expect a menu that feels like the 1980s in content. Not a lot has changed other than price updates. The inside looks like it's from the 1990s. But the staff seems to be friendly, the food was fairly fast and very tasty, the pies were OK, nothing bad to be said for anything they can control. On this visit I had country fried steak, which was exactly what I'd expect. The dish felt homemade. We like this Perkins and will gladly return. read more

On Tuesday November 23, 2021, we stopped at the Perkins on McKinley Avenue in Des Moines. There might have been several people eating. All of the unoccupied tables had dirty dishes on them. We were told by the hostess that she only had one server. She said it would be about a 15 minute wait. While waiting, I went to the Men's' room. It appeared as though no one had cleaned it for a week. I have had food inspectors tell me that a restaurant's restroom is a good preview of what the cleanliness of their kitchen is like. Went for brunch with family and they are able to fit larger groups pretty easily which is nice. It was cold for everyone though, especially those under the AC units so they actually left to get jackets and came back. The floors didn't seem like they had ever been cleaned. The waitress was nice and was able to divide the bill easily. I thought the food was fine but didn't love it. The country potatoes seemed to have lawry's seasoning and tasted like curly fries. My bacon came out a bit under done and the waitress immediately asked as she was putting it down if I'd want it to be microwaved to make it crispier. The pancakes surprised me and were quite good- I don't know if there was more butter in the syrup or in the pancake batter but everyone seemed to like them. One person got the strawberry crepe rolls and loved them as well. Overall, maybe not a date spot but for family traveling through the airport it's fine. read more

Only giving 4 stars as opposed to 5 because of the atmosphere, which unfortunately, isn't the restaurant's fault. I'm specifically referring to the clientele that came here on the evening of our visit. Even more specifically, a particular lady who wouldn't stop scoffing loudly at our table with "too many kids" and making it hard not to tell her off. We were a group of 5 children (3 toddlers and 2 pre-teens) and 6 adults. We weren't rowdy nor quiet, just a standard large family getting together for the 4th of July holiday in a seemingly family-oriented restaurant. The food is reminiscent of IHOP or Denny's, and the service was good, being that the waitresses are Mother's themselves and understand the conundrum of our situation. We were looking for a place that would be open near the Des Moines airport after getting in late on a much-delayed flight, and a local pointed us in the direction of Perkins as a 24-hr diner-ish spot. (I hadn't heard of the chain before, though I now see that they're all over the place- well, except for New England or California, which I guess explains how I've remained completely unaware of them for so long) Service was friendly and fast, the coffee was fine, and although I was a bit skeptical once I saw the franchisey laminated menus with too many not-fully-thought-through options, the food was also not bad at all. I chose possibly the least auspicious menu option of them all, considering that it's a greasy spoon Denny's-type place: a "shrimpsational Nawlins salad". Now, if you look at the Perkins website, you'll see that the one region outside New England and the Pacific West that's systematically lacking Perkins is the Gulf. So, I'm not entirely sure what the inspiration for the Nawlins salad is: it contains iceberg lettuce, canned olives, hard boiled eggs, fried grean beans, and fried potato slices, with a couple tortilla wedges and chipotle ranch dressing. But that said, it was pretty good, even if the fried toppings were a bit on the salty side. It was kind of the right mix of refreshing crunchy virtuousness and late night fried guilty temptation. I suspect that if it's during more normal hours, we'd hit up one of the more "local flavor" places near the Des Moines airport- but for a late night airport run, this was just right... read more

I love the strawberry menu, Look forward it it every year. The strawberry crepes and the strawberry pie are some of my most favorites, and the pineapple upside down muffins. This was literally the worst Perkins I have ever eaten at. The best thing on my plate was the muffin. My eggs were stringy and inedible. The hash browns were way undercooked and raw in spots. My son had a delicious waffle. The waitress was sweet and offered to get me new eggs and I declined. It was like they just didn't know how to cook. When I commented at the desk when I paid the kid working upfront literally said nothing. No sorry or anything. I told him next time we will just go to ihop. He said have a nice day. Came here for breakfast with a buddy and it was pretty good. Had ham, sausage, bacon and hash browns with pancakes. All very very good. Prices were cheap and the service was good. So far since my stay in Iowa service everywhere has been pretty good, Illinois needs to step it up lol. read more

Well, this Perkins is no different than the others I have been to around the country. They have standard diner food, good shakes, and great pie. Their staff is friendly at all locations and appear to enjoy their job. Perkins is a normal decor diner like Village Inn, it is not a vintage decoration diner. One of the best things about Perkins is that it is open REAL late and some 24/7, so there are many bar patrons who stop by to eat after a night out.
