The food was good. I had the fried mushrooms, house salad w/blue cheese dressing, baked potato, and the ribeye medium rare. Everything came at comfortable intervals, so I didn't feel rushed. The salad was fresh and crisp, the potato was baked nicely and served hot. The steak was larger than I expected, big for a 10 oz., average thickness, well marbled, flavorful, cooked perfectly, nicely seasoned, maybe a little too much pepper-but that might just be my taste. Servings sizes were good, filled me up so no dessert. Service was attentive but not intrusive. Atmosphere was very casual and comfortable. Only complaint, the booth was a little tight. If I'm in Altavista again it will definitely be a do over. Would like to try the cajón crayfish. read more

This is a family owned business since 1993, every time in visits Altavista I always eat here. The staff are friendly and efficient, they grill right out in front, amazing food from burgers to steaks to fish. My favorite is the Cajun crawfish for appetizer it's sooooo good I could eat it twice over, the soak up all the soup with bread mmmmmm Then I get the rack of lamb, medium rare it's absolutely delicious juicy tender and lots of flavor, if this is not on the menu I then have the sea food platter, this is a tuna steak scallops and shrimp Mmmm perfectly done and full of flavor!! The steaks are to die for. Cooked perfectly, no matter how you order them. Seasoned just right, tender and juicy. The sides and salad leaves a little to be desired, but the crawfish ettouffe and fried mushroom appetizers are amazing. Best Bloody Mary's in the world. And the staff is super friendly. That was good advice because Perky's is not big and it fills up quickly. We were seated immediately and ordered soon after. Our food was absolutely delicious, and we each had some left to take home. Our server was friendly and service was great. We weren't rushed or made to wait. The servers and the busser were totally focused on doing their jobs well. Perky's is casual and has a comfortable, come-as-you-are vibe. Diners' clothes ranged from tees + shorts + work boots all the way to church clothes. Had a reservation, showed up on time with my party. The two younger girls at the front were rude and basically said no, they said they didn't find it. There was a very kind server that tried to make this right. We waited for over an hour just to be told by the younger girls no again. Great place to eat. Tired of the steak chain restaurants. This is a mom and pop restaurant. The steak was excellent. Great service, staff at entrance were very nice and polite. Well, we showed up at 6:30pm and was seated at 8pm. The food was ok, not great. Got the NY Strip with fries and corn. Hot wings as an app and cookie/ice cream thing for dessert. Strip was tasty but slightly overcooked, no doubt a by product of a really busy night for the small kitchen. The dessert was store bought for sure but again not bad. I'm here in the Burg for business and would say I wouldn't eat here again. Cheap chairs/tables...pricey food with a long seating time (reoccurring theme in other reviews). Seems more like a place for locals then for outsiders. Shame. Hopefully the locals will keep it going forever. Service was timely and efficient from the waitress. One star for the steak and one for the service the rest I could have done without. First, I want to say I came into this with a open mind and being fully aware this is not a chain steakhouse. The inside is very small and cramped which wouldn't have mattered if the food lived up to the hype. To sum up the food it was like going to your grandpa's house for for dinner and he breaks out his family famous steak. The salad was a palm full of lettuce with a couple tomato dices and cheese, the baked potato was the size you'd find in a 5lb bag at your grocery store, and my wife's upcharge mushrooms were the ones that come from a jar and we're heated up and the butter were the tiny square packs you get at dinners. My wife made the remark it's like they did the bare minimum so they could say you got a steak "dinner". The steak was good on par with Texas Roadhouse but for $25 all I got was a 10oz ribeye where at TR you'd get 16oz. The $10 scallops I got were good as well but only four so I was disappointed there too. I'm sure the local older crowd are thrilled with the food and prices but for me it's a pass! read more

I've been wanting to try this for a while due to such praise they get. The restaurant is SMALL. They would make a killing if it was bigger. At 7:15 on a Thursday night they had to turn people away and had a 45 min wait. I'm so glad we made a reservation! Ambience- Very welcoming. Loud. You can sit at the "bar" with stools and watch all the meat get cooked. Super neat for such a small location. Food- we ordered 2 ribeyes and skewer of shrimp plates. Steak was a PERFECT med-rare. Char was amazing and the flavor sooooo good. Juiciest steak I might have ever had. Only downfall was it had soooooo much fat. It was so good I ate most of the fat but my husband doesn't so the 10oz was more like a 7oz of meat, 3 oz of fat. Again, the flavor was delicious. The shrimp was good. I could taste that it was shrimp and I liked that. Salads small....not really worth mention. Bread was nice and warm. The sides- fries, zucchini in tomato sauce, mashed potatoes, green beans. Honestly they were nothing spectacular. They were all good though. The real reason to come is the meat. Overall, I would go again and focus only on the meats. I had the boneless BBQ ribs... With fries and green beans - ribs are fall off the bone (if it was in the bone) with a touch of smokiness - the BBQ sauce was just right with a touch of sweet and vinegar... With layers of flavor abs spice If you are passing by and see this place you gotta stop... I believe they open up around 4pm so come hungry... This little hole in the wall is all but 16 minutes from my home. My uncle in law mentioned it in passing as a place that knows how to cook a steak. When I asked a few friends if they've heard of the place and how they liked it every single person raved about their steaks, among other things as well. My husband and I decided to make reservations for a Saturday night at 545 and I'm so glad we did, the place was bursting from the seams when we got there. They have a nice little waiting area and all the waiting staff we had contact with were great. Not 1 thing to complain about when it came to our appetizer, meals, drinks, and service. Everything was too chart. I just wish we hadn't gotten so full because they have desert specials we had to miss out on. Definitely the best steak I've ever had. This place came highly recommended from our coworkers and hotel front desk. "Best steak in town!" they told us and they weren't wrong. My ribeye was cooked to rare perfection and the crawfish in creole sauce were delicious. Green beans came out of a can, but whatever doctoring they did to them made me not care. First visit and got steak and shrimp special of the day for $28. Steak and shrimp had a seasoning on them that was spicy. I was able to eat the 5 shrimp but steak was too spicy. Waitress was very nice and asked if something was wrong and I explained about the steak. She offered to get me something else but we didn't have the extra time to wait while being cooked. She came back took my plate with steak and the uneaten side and said they were taking something of our check! They took a big $3 off, so we pd $25 for 5 shrimp, house salad, and bake potatoes! Finally, a chef that knows how to grill a rib eye and serve it piping hot! We have been driving past this little jewel for years and never considered it's possibilities. Today my bride was referred here for our traditional date night, as we are visiting Lynchburg, Va. for Christmas. They told her the steaks were excellent and the green beans were worth the price of the dinner. Called for reservations and they were booked solid so we opted for a 4:30 dinner. Good idea as the line went out to the parking lot when we left, just after 5:30. Rib eye and shrimp were on the Special board as was their fried flounder. We had both. Service was incredible and very Southern friendly and our waitress Rhonda was tops. The steak melts in your mouth, and unlike other steak places that tout their meat, this one was as good as it gets. Very little fat, an incredible seasoning and char grilled to perfection. Shrimp was on a skewer and they were tasty. Coming from a foodie and a chef, who gets his shrimp fresh off the boats in SC,, that's as high a compliment as you can get. The green beans were excellent, accompanied with some bacon and not over cooked. Wild rice was a perfect finish to the plate. My bride's flounder was cooked crisp and there were two large pieces...a plate full for sure. The local crowd gathers here and there was plenty of hugging and lots of Christmas greetings everywhere. The one thing that impressed me was the open kitchen and watching the grill chef do his art. Perky's will be on our list of places to dine when we aren't cooking here in the Mountains. It's just that good. If you plan dinner there on a Friday, call and make a reservation, or you're gonna wait for a seat. "Cooking is not an art, cooking is generosity." What a great find this place was. We were wandering around downtown Lynchburg and didn't find anything interesting. Heading south on Route 29, we found this place. The steaks looked amazing as we were able to watch the grill cook at work. The staff was super friendly. We had coconut shrimp to start. I had the pulled pork sandwich. My wife had a cheeseburger. The burgers start out on the grill the size of dinner plates! I thought the prices were very fair. This place is popular and it's small; so expect to wait for a while. Food is delicious, but can't get take out! We called one evening about 6 pm, were told by the hostess they weren't accepting takeout orders, to call back in an hour, which we did. My husband an I are here from Nevada visiting family. They had told us about Perky's an that we needed to try it, that the steaks are very good along with the scallops an ect. We had also heard about it from another family member who lives in Gladstone who also said we needed to try it. So we made reservations as we were told if you don't you will have a wait. This restaurant is always packed for several reasons: 1. The seafood is well done. I was particularly impressed with the crayfish and scallops. Plump, juicy, signature. 2. They have the best green beans I have ever tasted. 3. It's five star restaurant food with a down home feel. It's what Crown Sterling should aspire to be. 4. The beer and wine list will blow you out of the water--especially if you are familiar with Altavista. I heard a lot of hype, thought the decor was a little odd/off for my expectations, but I can honestly said, I was not disappointed by any of the food nor the service. The parking lot is almost always full, but the restaurant itself it totally unremarkable, but we had heard good things so we looked a the website and the selection was impressive so made a reservation. Wasn't sure how to dress so decided to go with jeans and a button down shirt and jacket. We got there and walked thru the door and realized that if we had come dressed up anymore we would not have been comfortable. The place has a very cozy, homey feeling and people are dressed very casually. Don't let appearances fool you though, the food was totally amazing. The filet mignon was huge and melted in my mouth and the scallops were delicious. Someone else in our party loves Cajun food and since Jazz Street closed has missed a local place for etouffee.
