The steaks are cooked to perfection! For someone who likes her steak well done and not burnt, New London Steakhouse has nailed it. This place is a hidden family owned gem and often quite busy. The staff are friendly. The salad bar is great along with the homemade dressing. I have not tried the desserts, but I've been told they're amazing! Servers were very nice and accommodating to our large party. They weren't rude or unpleasant and engaged with our group. The ambiance was very pleasant and what I expected for the type of restaurant and the area. Homey, in a way. The food was awful! Nothing like it used to be! Ordered prime rib with baked potato and salad bar. The bowls on the salad are so tiny now you can hardly get anything in it. The prime rib was cooked properly but was so tough it was inedible. The waitress removed the prime rib from the bills but charged $12 for the potato and $12 for the salad bar. Had terrible experience during my daughter's birthday celebration. Made reservation for 9 but only had 8 as my daughter's husband was sick. Steaks were miniature and the market price was highly overrated. We chose New London Steakhouse because she loves the Prime Rib because of the beef and ambience. It was a moderately busy Saturday evening and we felt lucky to have a table because normally you need reservations. Upon being seated or beverage drinks were taken. The service was excellent and all during the evening we were more than amply taken care of. My wife ordered her usual of Prime Rib medium well and I ordered the shrimp entree. Well, to say the least it was over cooked. The Prime Rib was very tough and we noticed it contained no marbling nor fat cap. That could be the reason for the Prime Rib failure, this is not like New London would serve. On the other hand my shrimp dish was steamed perfectly with the requested bay seasoning. We used to love New London Steakhouse but something changed. Went there last night (Wednesday) and ordered a filet and ribs. We were a bit concerned that the meal came out so quick. Very quick! Certainly not enough time to make a steak! Not even half the time! I knew something was a bit off with my filet. It looked old like it was cooked days before. I ate it. The ribs were ok but they looked mushy and shredded. Came home and in the middle of the night my husband got sick. I woke up early because I feel nauseous. I don't think I will be returning. Too many ways to count how bad this place is. The steak is likely the worst steak I have had, and it was the most expensive on their menu. The baked potatoes were obviously sitting in a warmer from that morning. The salad bar had bowls the size of ramekins and no good toppings. The onion rings were disgusting. The service was fine. My husband had reservations for us at New London and the place was packed. We did have to wait maybe 10-15 minutes past our reservation to be seated. I didn't really like the salad bar, the bowls were too shallow that by the time I got to my dressing it was spilling down the sides and I barely had anything in my bowl. And there were rolls at the end of the salad bar but no plates so I had to carry my dripping salad bowl back with my roll in my other hand. I'd have to say the service was really great. Our server kept checking in with us and was really prompt and nice. I had the coconut shrimp with a baked potato and it was pretty good! Sadly my husband's meal wasn't the best, he got the ribs and parts of the bone were mush so it mixed in with the meat making it inedible. read more

We met with some friends at New London Steakhouse for dinner and enjoyed our meals. I had the Grilled Chicken Pasta and it was filling. I loved the salad bar options and loaded up my bowl since you only get one trip. Their dinner rolls were great as well. For appetizers, we tried the bacon wrapped shrimp which were great, and the jalapeño poppers which were about what you'd expect. This is the first time in several years since we've been back to the New London Steak House. Everything about this place was perfect except their menu choice for steak! They only have Ribeye or filet! Plenty of ribs and shrimp, but only the two cuts of steak, and I really don't care for Ribeye!! It is just two fatty!! Granted it was cooked a PERFECT medium rare! But every bite was fat!! I'll stop my rant with say that the service was perfect! I'll probably be back, but I'll get bbq ribs the next time! Steak / Chicken / Seafood I have been told by a lot of local folks that this place serves up some very good food - so with the wife having a birthday, I thought it would be a good chance to give it a shot. Reservations are definitely needed here on a weekend as the place packs out. There is a smallish bar area right as you walk in and you can sit there for a bit if you need to wait for a table. If the bar is not your thing, there are some scattered benches to wait on. The decor can be be described as rustic. It is dark wood sort of decorated in what I would call Americana... rifles, country home type things - lots and lots of wood. The menu is on the basic side: steaks, apps, chicken and some seafood. Of the offerings, the selection is somewhat limited, but well thought out. for example, there are only about 3 cuts of steaks, but those cuts are excellent. It should be relatively easy for everyone in your party to find something that will float their boat. Waitstaff seemed a bit overwhelmed the night we were there; I had to flag her down a few times, but it was definitely because they were busy and not because they weren't paying attention - huge difference and one you do not mind so much. In this part of VA, the self serve salad bar is still a big attraction and this one is pretty well done. Lots of goodies to load up on your salad and they are smart enough to have smaller bowls available so you can leave room for dinner. Appetizers were very good we had some bacon wrapped shrimp- and the shrimp were very nicely sized, definitely enough for two people. Mains were very good. I had the prime rib and the wife had the filet mignon. Both were cooked perfectly and larger than expected (portion wise). Baked potato and the aforementioned salads rounded out the entree. About the only downside I saw was a serious dearth of veggies- I would have loved to see a nice side of asparagus or creamed spinach for example, but this seems like a real meat & potato kind of place. Prices were extremely reasonable, especially when compared to other similar establishments in the area. Dinner for two, with one of us drinking cocktails came in under $80 - we skipped dessert as we were too full. You will want to try this place. It is a nice, scenic ride on your way there- it is located a bit off the beaten path, but again, worth the trip. Large parking lot around the place. read more

Our family was horrified by the total lack of ANY adherence to the Phase 2 guidelines. The entire restaurant was packed, all tables full, the outdoor seating full, the wait staff were not wearing face masks, possibly 2 of the more than 100+ customers wore face masks, people were in line at the reception area shoulder to shoulder, and there was absolutely NO sign of anyone distancing themselves. We were so uncomfortable with the lack of safety precautions, we were barely able to get through dinner. Obviously, profit is much more important than customer safety at New London House. We will never return and will surely report them to the proper authorities for inspection. read more

The New London Steak House is appallingly bad. We had been told that the restaurant had the best steaks in town, so our expectations were somewhat high. We braced ourselves for disappointment, however, when found ourselves parked in a field behind what appeared to be a saloon or shack. Was this the right place? And how reliable was that source that had praised this restaurant? New London did not fail to disappoint... With a slow-moving line for the very limited salad bar (think iceberg lettuce, bacon bits and a couple choices of dressings) that snaked through several of the small, dark dining rooms, we wondered whether we'd get back to the table before our food arrived. Or, given the long line, whether we should grab a second helping while we had the opportunity. Another thing - we were seated next to the salad bar (which really should be called a "salad table"). So throughout our dining experience, we had people hovering around our table, derrieres at eye-level. The steaks were sub-standard. I ordered a rib eye, a cut that steak lovers agree is more tender and flavorful than other cuts of beef. Simply put, the thing they served was inedible. Full of fat and gristle. My dining companion had the filet, but complained the following day of having had diarrhea. Spotting my uneaten steak, our waitress inquired whether I did not like my meal. Upon stating what was wrong, she whispered, "Don't tell anyone, but I'll take that off your bill." Yet, when the check was presented, I was in fact billed for the steak. I know, I know. I should have spoken with the manager. After all, restaurants are in the service business and will generally go out of their way to make things right for a disappointed diner. Had I done so, perhaps New London would have prepared a different steak for me. Or at least comped me, as the waitress promised, for the lousy steak. But the reality is that I just wanted to leave and hit Sheetz on the way home to satisfy my hunger pangs. We've all heard the adage, "Don't judge a book by its cover." There are plenty of dives where one can get very good food. New London Steak House is not one them. read more

Tough crowd on this page... It's been about a year since I have been here... but wanted to share our experience. We didn't have nearly the negative experience some of the other posters have had, but it wasn't really a memorable experience either. Definitely not the best steak house in the area, but the quality of the food was not bad at all. The atmosphere and lack of value is what turned me off. We had steak and crab cakes. Both were tasty, but nothing special. The restaurant is dark and dated. I also never enjoy having to stand in line for an average salad bar right beside other tables when I'm paying $50+ for dinner. I'll stand in line for a Texas De Brazil "salad bar" any day though. The restaurant is out of the way, and maybe not bad if you live in the area. But we don't see a need to make the 20 minute drive from Lynchburg to eat here again. If you are in the area, give it a try if you want. If not, try Benjamins, Shoemakers or The Crown for a good steak. read more

You'll always see someone you know here because this is where everybody goes. Steaks: Upgrade your steak to the filet. The base ribeye is too fatty. I haven't had the filet mignon so I can't speak to how good it is. Shrimp: Coconut shrimp is very good. The bacon wrapped shrimp appetizer is also very good. I get it every time we come here. Steamed shrimp is also very good. Salad bar: small selection of veggies, but they do keep it replenished. The line tends to be long so just wait your turn or wait until you see the line go down. There are also multiple ways to the line so be courteous to others and make sure you don't cut in line. General: They'll help customize anything on the menu for you. Our kids wanted just pasta so they customized the only pasta dish so it was just pasta and sauce without chicken and broccoli. It's a small place so either come early or make a reservation ahead of time. It will take 1-1.5 hours to eat here. We've only ever been on Saturday nights so not sure how it is during the week. Ambiance is good. It's obviously a small family run business. There are pics of the family all over the walls near the entrance and bathrooms. Wait staff is good and takes care of you. They are in tshirts with with the company logo on them. Overall, it's a good place. I only give three stars as the prices are higher as if its a steak house in the big city. I did like the ambience The proprietor is very nice and friendly and lovely and she is eager to please. Food is very very overpriced and not very good tasting at all. Presentation is lackluster/mediocre/ unappealing - basically canned / frozen food reheated SALTED and/ or fried. However, it seems like a good place to meet friends for a drink at the bar. My girlfriend and I went here for her birthday request. She had been before; I had not. I went with an open mind as I do every place I visit the first time. I like to praise for the positive, offer constructive comment for areas needing improvement. I'll state the summation now instead of at the end: If New London House is going to charge these prices, they need to step it up. A lot. Salad bar: Not the place for a high-priced restaurant. On top of that the bowls are so tiny, who wants to make multiple trips to the salad bar? It should be done away with altogether. Two tables need to go, or relocate the salad bar. Or do away with the salad bar as previously stated. The two tables nearest the salad bar are seated butt-eye level with people cruising it, in very close proximity. Put up a half wall with some plants on top. Create a border. It doesn't cost that much and would make all the difference for the folks seated there. Steak was good, baked potato average, where is the vegetable? A steak at this price should have an offering of something elaborate such as bacon wrapped grilled asparagus, or a medley of grilled vegetables. Do whatever you need to do to accentuate the grill that you already have going. We ordered exact meals; ribeye with baked potato. Bottom line with tip and iced tea came to $37 a person. That's pretty steep for 9 ounce steak, baked potato and dinky salad. I won't be returning. read more

So where to start. The salad was kinda funny jus because I have set up a salad bar better at my home. Then the bacon wrapped shrimp. Haha the bacon was not cooked just half cooked. My lady got the prime rib and I have never had a chewy prime rib. The sides, I don't know what the hell is going on there. The funniest part is that the chef has his own parking space haha. You should give him a lesson on cooking steaks, not a parking space. Ok I am a certified executive chef through the A.C.F., the American Culinary federation . Spent 4 years to get a bachelor's degree at I C.I.A.. So I can spot a chef through his cooking and presentation, don't start me on that subject, and he isn't a chef. I'm not trying to be a a--hole, but if I am spending that kind of money, you need to make damn sure it's worth it. A lot of older folks there, and the sense of taste is the first sense to decline. And there is something special about their salad bar that makes it so good..but no one can really pinpoint what it is! We went last night for my birthday and it was great! We have lived in the area for long enough to hear many people recommend the New London Steak House. For my son's High School graduation we made reservations for a party of 10. After making the reservation we checked Yelp and were horrified at the reviews and considered cancelling and finding another place to celebrate - but based on what we had heard we persevered. I am very pleased that we did. The atmosphere and ambiance are nice, we were quickly seated and served. Drinks came out most directly. The salad bar as other reviewer have note is a tad small and there was a line but it isn't lacking in quality or variety. The appetizers: Calamari and Stuffed Mushrooms. The calamari was very good, the stuffed mushroom a bit too much cheese for my taste but still quite good. I ordered the large filet mignon, medium rare and it did not disappoint, A nice cut of meat well seasoned and cooked to a textbook medium rare. Not the best filet I've ever had but in the top 10 and I'm a steak-a-holic. In the end it was a great steak, served by a pleasant staff in a relaxing atmosphere. I'm so glad we went with word of mouth and didn't place too much emphasis on the not so good yelp reviews. I will definitely be back when I'm looking for a non-corporate restaurant with a unique ambiance and superb steaks. read more

I do not understand how so many negative reviews are placed for this establishment. Being a patron for over 20 years, we all (in my family) have never been anything but satisfied. Once we had a problem with our steak and it was sent back and a proper steak was returned to the table. The only thing better than a Ribeye is Prime Rib (which is ribeye) or Filet and their Ribeye is mouth watering. Yes, they are a little on the pricey side, but, they have a reputation of delivering quality entrees. Thus, allowing them to do so. By no means are they a Ruth Cris, this is a Steakhouse located out in the country (Gods Country) and have some of the best food around. Yes, we "locals" love it and stand behind it!!!! First time at New London Steak House, so wanted to really like this place. The salad was good and fresh, currently no salad bar. The rolls were fresh however had a slight over taste, my wife the bread queen did not like. My wife's entree was the clams and fried shrimp. The clams had a good taste, the shrimp however was way over breaded and took away the flavor of the shrimp. Have to say I tried one piece and that was enough for me and I love shrimp. My entree was the rib eye ribs and steamed shrimp. The steak had a good flavor, ribs were fall off the bone tender and the shrimp was ok. I've been going there for 20 years. I would say that this is my family's favorite restaurant in greater Lynchburg. Certainly, they have the best steak in Central Virginia. The salad bar, while small, always has fresh, high-quality ingredients. My favorite entree is the filet mingion. My wife likes the shrimp and clams. The service is always top-notch, If you've ever been to the UK, you will see the resemblence to an English country Inn. The New London House isn't the cheapest place you can go to, but you get value for your money. It's a winner! read more

We have called New London our favorite eatery since moving to central Virginia over fifteen years ago. The last two visits were not so inviting. Just two weeks ago, we met close fathers for dinner on a Saturday evening. With a standing reservation, we all arrived and were seated in a timely manner, even though the restaurant was fully occupied. All went well; from standing in a long line at the tiny salad bar (one small bowl only please), to fairly quick service. Our food was received within forty-five minutes and we received intermittent attention from the server. I usually enjoy the melt-in-your-mouth prime rib as it is a go-to. Unfortunately, my first bite of the entree was disappointing; chewy and down right tough! I was surprised! I know that any steak can occasionally be hit or miss. Oh, this was a complete miss! After four bites, I'd had enough. As we wrapped up our meal, my wife and I wanted to share a dessert. That was a hit! I asked for a to-go box to take the meat home for the dogs. As we sat talking and catching up with our friends, a lady approached our table and asked us to leave as they needed the table. While the restaurant was quite busy, I don't appreciate being asked to leave. At the time we said we understood, the more I thought about it the more insulted I became! This was a favorite stop we have highly recommended to friends and colleagues. While we may continue to recommend New London, we will advise anyone patronizing the place that they must eat/drink quickly and cut the small talk with your guests. For the price we paid, and being asked to leave, I don't think we will return. We wish the owner/management the best. If the lack of space for your loyal patrons is shrinking, please consider handling your reservations more appropriately and/or expanding or rearranging your dining area accordingly.
