Great place for large groups indoors or outdoors. Came here with a bunch of teammates for a state bowling tournament and it was pretty busy. We got a big table outside and the waiters were quick with the drinks and food. The drinks were definitely made with some decent alcohol content. I got White Russians and they tasted great and were mixed well. I ended up with a burger and fries and everything was fresh and made correctly. Everyone else ate all their food too. The water at this restaurant tastes horrible! It tastes like it came straight from the river. My Reuben sandwich was all of 1/2" thick and mediocre at best. The catered family Thanksgiving dinner was absolutely awful. Turkey and ham was thick sliced lunch meat with a slimy texture. Stuffing was soggy and had a weird flavor. Boxed Stove top would blow it away. Mac and cheese had no flavor. I have had many good meals in the restaurant but that was the worst excuse for food I have ever tried to eat. I would be ashamed to have let that disgusting mess ever leave my restaurant. I wouldn't feed it to my dog. Not a single redeeming quality and a ridiculous price. All 7 of us could have gone to Golden Corral for half the price and actually eaten decent food. One star was too much. Love Rob and MJ but never again. Good came out very quickly (within 10 mins) and everything tasted lovely. Our server Joey was wonderful, he didn't hover but was there every time we needed something. The food I got was average but nothing exceptional. The interior and decor is rather dated and it had the feel of a nursing home cafeteria. Charley's is a decent place for lunch or dinner. They won't blow you away, but they will provide consistently good service and pretty good food. The mozzarella sticks were good but obviously frozen. The pasta primavera was delicious with plenty of cheese but wasn't seasoned very well and contained undercooked veggies. French fries were pretty typical of what you may find at an Applebee's. I don't have anything in particular to really complain about, but I also don't have much to highlight either. It might be a good choice if you want somewhere to go to socially without spending too much, but otherwise I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to visit. read more

I have been going to Charles for years. The food is always delicious and consistent from visit to visit and the service always is great. I love their French onion soup, Shea crab soup, crab dip and ahi tuna for appetizers. For entrees, everything is going to be cooked perfectly and the flavors are always well balanced. read more

I came here before when I was in college a long time ago, but since moving back I had to try it again. Did a takeout order because I had my sleeping 2 year old with me. I ordered the Prime Roast Dip with the mashed potatoes, the kids Corn Dog Nuggets with fries & 3 rolls because I had remembered them being so hot & delicious. I pulled up in the space for the pickup orders & I waited for all of 5 minutes. Very quick service. Once I got my food I couldn't wait to try a roll, so I took one out the container and ate on the way home. Either I forgot what they tasted like before or they changed the rolls since I last been but they tasted like Sister Schubert rolls. Wasn't too impressed. The Prime Roast Dip was delicious. The sandwich was good on its own. Loved how it came with onions, green peppers and mozzarella cheese. Also liked how the roll wasn't soggy since it was already dipped in the au jus. My only complaint was that the au jus that came with the sandwich was too salty for me. You could tell it had a good flavor but it was over seasoned with salt. The best part of the meal, to me, was the mashed potatoes. I LOVE good mashed potatoes & they have some good ones Just wish they didn't put them in aluminum foil because it was hard to scrape the bottom lol. Needless to say I ate all of them. My son loved his Corn Dog Nuggets. He's not a big fan of bread so he picked out the hot dogs and left the outer dough. He also enjoyed the French fries. Overall good meal. Came into Charley's for sandwiches and had a pretty good experience with a bit of a mixed review. They seem to do well with sandwiches and seafood, and they have an impressive amount of dessert options. so I'll break it down into pro's and con's: PROS - FOOD: the mozzarella sticks were by far the best i've ever had. ive had quite a few over the years, and these were the best. They're crispy, golden brown, and the cheese is melted allllll the way through and has a great flavor. Truly you have to get these. The burger was purportedly okay from the word of my friend that got it, and the steak was just okay as well but may have been so bc it was a bit overcooked. - SERVICE: our waitress was great and the entire staff seemed very friendly and polite - ATMOSPHERE: i love the space inside the restaurant. It feels kind of diner-esq with how many windows and booths there are, and the den-like drop down area feels different and cool. CONS - FOOD: everything else i had was just okay. The baked alaska had good flavor but didnt blow me away; same with the prime rib dip. i was disappointed with the amount of au jus on the plate--it came in a very small ramekin that i couldnt even dip the sandwich into. I also would not order the parmesan risotto again--it tasted like cheesy rice, which isnt a bad thing, but it wasnt risotto. The crab cake my buddy got did not have a great texture but he said the flavor was okay. All in all I will be back here solely for the mozzarella sticks and the try a few more of the sandwiches and desserts. read more

Food however is still the old O'Charleys... so once it does come out, if you liked it before, will likely still like it. I came here all the time growing up and recently returned while back in Lynchburg for the holidays. They have a pretty extensive menu, but only 2 vegetarian items on the entire menu, which is pretty disappointing. Our waitress was also not very knowledgeable about the draft list (the menu does not list the beers, instead saying "See your server for our current selection.") When we asked her, she went away for a while, came back, and was only able to tell us the names of the breweries, not the names or styles of the beers themselves. We ended up just ordering beers based on the breweries' names, and thankfully we all liked what we got. I ended up getting the Vegetable Wrap (squash, zucchini, mushrooms, and onions sautéed in lemon basil butter with pepper jack cheese, lettuce, and tomato). The wrap was really good. It came with a choice of one side, and I chose the creamy parmesan risotto. The risotto arrived sitting in a bath of oil which was pretty gross. I had to drain the oil out of the dish in order to eat it. Once all of the oil was gone, I saw that it really just looked like rice and parmesan. The grains weren't as thick as all other risotto I've had, which leads me to believe they didn't use arborio rice. Overall, service was fine (minus the lack of knowledge about the draft list), but it's a pretty sad spot for vegetarians and those trying to avoid enormous amounts of oil in their diets. read more

However when an appetizer costs $11.25 and is supposed to have chili as the primary food Yikes - it was only 2 tablespoons of Chili we actually had 2 tablespoons full and the rest was tortilla chips, mini- pieces of lettuce and some jalapeno! My partner got a gift card for Christmas so we thought we would try it out. This place defines average. It would be okay if you were starving or if you are someone who considers just salt on a dish as 'seasoned.' Crab Cakes were decent. The brussel sprouts lacked flavor. The risotto was so plain. He got the sweet and sour shrimp which was also underwhelming. The mashed potatoes and green beans were fine. The best thing we ate were the cheese fries which are difficult to mess up. When we told him we needed a few minutes he just walked off. Ahi tuna was plain hardly sliced . Waiter brought our food didn't say anything literally tossed the tortilla container off a plate and walked away. Not very attentive. A long time local favorite. The restaurant has been in Lynchburg Virginia since the mid-eighties. Offering a nice variety and delicious selection of American cuisine. Offering catering for all types of events. The staff is one that feels like family. They have some of the longest relationships I've ever seen for any company some cooks and waiters and waitressess have been there for thirty, twenty years. That alone speaks volumes for the kind of friendly environment this business offers to both staff and consumers. The owner's have some of the kindest hearts. read more

Order their "famous" chicken tenders with fries and Brussel sprouts. Chicken tenders has potential of being good had they been fried in clean oil that was the proper temperature. They weren't crispy but instead felt soggy and oily. Ranch dressing for dipping was very good and tasted homemade! Fries were delicious!!! I don't live in Lynchburg, but I have some friends that live there, and they always recommend Charley's, not only for the food, but also the entertainment. They have bands on the weekends, and when the weather is nice they play outdoors. I have been here twice now while in town, and had a lot of fun and good food both times. The menu is expansive and they off a wide variety including seafood, steaks, Italian and american fare such as hamburgers. On both of my visits, I have had seafood and have came away satisfied. The service I have had there has been good. They do get really busy on the weekends and you may have to fight for a parking spot. We pass by this place so often on our way home, that we decided we should try it... since... I was hankering for a good ole American meal... with beef. You are greeted by a bright-eyed young host, who seats you to your table. Then you take a look around and realize that you may be on the set of Golden Girls or entered a place where only the cool Senior Citizens know about. That was ok with us since, inevitably we will all become seniors one day... so we happily sat, ordered drinks and placed our orders. I decided on the Petite Filet that comes with two sides, and my hubs got the 12oz Prime Rib. The service was good, and the food came out quickly. Sadly, my Petite Filet... was... gray. I had the garlic mashed potatoes and 3 cheese macaroni with it. Had it not been for my ravenous hunger, I ate the filet since I was not about to let $11.50 go down the drain. Flavor was bland... but the sides made up for that. I enjoyed the 3 cheese macaroni and the garlic mashed potatoes... although had it baked on pieces of potato indicating that it was put under the broiler or in the oven for too long, I liked it.... But again, maybe that was my ravenous hunger. My husband's Prime Rib was decent, but nothing spectacular. We weren't going to stay for dessert, but my observant hubby eyed something that he just HAD to ask about... Something in a casserole dish with high, perfectly bruleed peaks... It was Baked Alaska! Now after years of wanting to make this dish, I caved in. When it came I was happy, but when I broke into it, I was sad. The meringue was good, but the ice cream and cake layer that was supposed to be inside lacked something.... I'm not sure what... but I already felt like what I saw Paula Deen make on her show didn't taste like that. : P At least we tried it, and service was really friendly... but we won't be back for gray meat. read more

Appetizer: crab stuffed mushrooms. Definitely a frozen item that was reheated in the salamander and served with no fanfare. Lacking in seasoning and not much crab to be found. Dinner: ribeye steak for me, ordered medium rare. It was served between medium and medium-well but seasoned very nicely. I decided not to complain because our server was trying and doing her best. Garlic mashed potatoes, again probably from a pouch of frozen product, scooped into a bowl and reheated. My wife's baby-back ribs were the best thing we got. Tender and nicely caramelized on the outside. Baked potato was good (but you have to have malice in your heart to mess up a baked spud) and sauteed green beans were just okay. TL;DR: this restaurant is more like what you might find in a mid-grade hotel. It was probably pretty good about 25 years ago, but definitely showing its age. Very clean, but also very non-descript. I would like to give this zero stars but that's not an option; one is the lowest possible. I do not understand the good reviews of this place. The food is straight out of an episode of Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares; everything is frozen and just reheated then served with no presentation whatsoever. The chicken fingers were perfect square cut processed, the meat was hard, the breading was soggy and separated from the chicken, indicating it had been a prepackaged frozen variety not unlike you would buy in bulk. The burger, requested Medium, was delivered Well Done to the point of the exterior being charred. The $7 margarita was delivered in a six ounce glass. (La Caretta has spoiled me; HUGE.) The above two basic food items ordered were very slow coming from the kitchen, upwards of 30 minutes, and even the drinks were over 10 minutes despite the place not being busy. The coleslaw side requested with the burger was not edible; all vinegar, no dressing. Additionally, I feel any restaurant with prices as this (no entree under $10), service should be done with serving trays, not carrying plates by hand throughout. Very Tacky. A small detail can make a big difference. All this terrible food and minuscule drink for $50. I will not return, and you should not go. Spend that $50 elsewhere. I always try to find something good about a place so here it is: the restroom was clean. Lastly, the previous reviewer was correct regarding our visit as well; with both of us in our early 50's we were the youngest patrons.
