Located in what once was an old drug store/post office, this place is full of history and personality! I loved the vibe as soon as I walked in! From the wooden booths, to the vintage decor, this place wooed me! Owner knew his history and was super nice, showing us around the restaurant, the cool back room full of antiques, and even the upstairs and rooftop! We were enthralled!! (He even gave me one of his cook collector's spoons... shhhh, don't tell!) The story behind the spoons is a riot ! Just ask! Even our burgers, fries and beers were on time and fabulous! For the area this is in the food was pretty good; the atmosphere was nice and the service was spot on. We had great company for dinner with his evening so that made the night perfect. The waitress was very attentive and very good at what she does. For dinner we had the ribs, Asian dish, beer (large beer), wine (very smooth white wine), cocktail, salad, and the combo appetizer. Mom n pop business. Great food! We we're traveling from PA to NC. Stopped for lunch in a small town. We don't usual go in a restaurant when traveling but for some reason we did this time. WE ARE GLAD WE DID . chicken salads half sandwich was Very tasty with potato soup. The soup was homemade and chunky with great flavor. Had a stake sandwich that was moist and delicious. Saw the online rating and drove 20 min to give it a shot. Cool building but that is the extent of it. Walked in and saw 1 customer (Fri 6pm). Nobody to greet or seat you. Staff was behind kitchen doors just staring through the door window. Walked around for a minute, nobody came out of kitchen. Went upstairs (8 customers) and a very nice bartender, Brie, who was solo. Service slow, probably because the rest of staff just chatting downstairs. Onion rings were good, mac and cheese good, brisket sandwich was very cold and bland (reluctantly had to send it back to be heated). Had much higher expectations. Would give it a 2.5 star if that was option but will not return. read more

Quality of food has drastically plummeted under new management. My usual dish, a pasta, was almost inedible and the alfredo sauce which is usually thick - was soupy. Just weeks prior I had ordered brisket and it was the wrong cut of meat and fried (not smoked) which is what is detailed on the menu. Also, who eats fried brisket? This is still one of the few options to eat in the area and it's still good ambiance. Service still good. Whoever the new owners are should consider getting better cooks or finding the old one. Quite possibly the best fried chicken sandwich I've ever eaten. The batter was crispy and perfectly seasoned, and the pickles were excellent. The fries were tasty and fresh. The double bacon burger was also very good. The service was kind and helpful. As another reviewer said, the tap water wasn't great, but I'm not going to hold that against them. We were just passing through, and it was definitely worth the detour! We almost didn't stop because the website said closed on Mondays, but thankfully we called and confirmed it was open for lunch. read more

I have been wanting to try this place for a while and finally made my way to it. The place is kind of run down looking and the waitress had zero personality. We got ready to order and appetizer and she literally walked away. The water taste like dirt. The food was Luke warm and wasn't anything special. From time to time I drive through Brookneal. If I can I stop here at the Drug Store Grill. This is the first evening meal I've had. Best grilled salmon salad I've eaten since I can't remember when. It was a four oz filet. It was served hot! The waitress recommended a Chianti vinaigrette dressing which was a perfect compliment. Delicious. Friendly staff. Passing through for work and loved the rustic feel upon walking in the door. I was anxious to read the history of the town on the back of the menu, but everything sounded so tasty, I couldn't make up my mind on what to order. I opted for the smoked salmon blt salad. AMAZING! We were in the area for the night and opted for the Drug Store Grill. Probably the best chicken and waffles I've had. The chicken was nice and crisp, waffle was fluffy, and the hot butter and syrup matched well with it. If we're ever in the area again we will be back. read more

We moved just outside the Brookneal area in late 2018. The town has sadly been allowed to decay although basic needs can be met. The shining star was the Drug Store Grill. Under Josh and Robin the food and service were, with rare exceptions, outstanding. We have typically visited the DSG at least 4 times a month and often more over the last nearly 3 years as it is close and always enjoyable. The DSG has changed hands and has unfortunately declined in quality. While the new owner has made some good changes, the core of what made DSG great has been ignored. We gave grace for some food quality issues the first few weeks as the new owner found his footing. The frontline staff has been and continues to be excellent but relegated to apologizing too often for the kitchen. The food quality has taken a big hit in general. There doesn't seem to be a kitchen manager and the inconsistency shows. We ordered the shrimp and scallops dinner, a consistent favorite, to find it unpalatable. The shrimp were small and indistinguishable from the scallops under a thick greasy batter unlike the butterflied shrimp we'd always enjoyed. The tuna New Orleans has been lackluster too. We still come in to eat weekly but relegate ourselves to basic dishes which are pretty good sometimes and disappointing others. Order a hamburger rare? It comes out well done. Order a French Dip and you'll be looking for more meat. Fried Green Tomatoes are a hit but the last time these were cold in the middle. The staff says it depends who's cooking but that is no excuse. Desserts? Nope. There were pies, cheesecakes and brownies. The new owner only provided cakes that were dry with icing that fell away. I overheard an offer of cheesecake one night which offered hope although I didn't order any. The last few visits didn't offer any dessert. This review is typical of the complaints I've heard from many others that came out all the time. I've also noticed a lot of the dinner regulars aren't so regular anymore. I hope the new owner takes this and other poor reviews as motivation and inspiration to bring back the expectations we'd grown accustom too as well as new ideas. It would be a tragedy if Brookneal lost the only good restaurant in town. read more

This place is awesome! Huge smoker outside, live music & everything was delicious... Firewalker Wings: Super crispy, sauce was slightly sweet/smokey, not very spicy or buffalo-y (as described by the server), but they were cooked perfectly--possibly my favorite out of all the appetizers. Southwest Egg Rolls: These were like baby chimichangas w/o the queso. The red pepper ranch was good & the soft, flaky wrappers were a nice surprise. House Salad: Basil Chianti Vinaigrette was mouth wateringly delicious! Fish Trap: AWESOME (& huge enough to feed 4 small children)! The shrimp, fish & scallops were all delicious... But what I was most impressed w/was the fried oysters. I don't usually enjoy fried oysters, as I prefer them raw (loaded w/horseradish, lemon juice & a hint of cocktail sauce), however these were amazing! The breading was perfect, just crunchy enough to balance out the soft texture of the oyster w/o taking away from it. I just made myself fish & oyster tacos w/my leftovers. Heated the fish & oysters in the oven w/a couple corn tortillas... Layered on a little red pepper hummus, some spring mix & the cole slaw that came on the side. Quite possibly the best fish tacos ever... Bread Pudding: Not usually a bread pudding fan, but theirs had chocolate chips baked in, and a bourbon glaze coating the top... We just had dinner at the Drug Store Grill in Brookneal, VA. The food was GREAT. I had the best shrimp and grits that I've ever had. My wife had the 8 oz. sirloin with the sweet potato fries. I helped her with the fries and they were awesome! I know that Brookneal is rarely on they way to anywhere, but the Drug Store Grill is well worth the drive out to the southern end of Campbell County. If you want to make an afternoon of it, Sans Soucy Vineyards and Winery is around the corner and they grow and bottle great Petit Verdot among other wines. Stop by Patrick Henry's Red Hill to see what one of our founding fathers called "one of the garden spots of the world." Who would have known you could find this kind of great food and wine in Brookneal! read more

Five of us had lunch here after touring nearby Red Hill. The menu was incredibly varied, the service was great, and the food was amazing. A couple of us had the Blackened Smokehouse sandwich (brisket and pulled pork, plus onions, mushrooms, etc.), and it was the best brisket I've ever tasted. All meats are smoked right outside in a smoker parked on the sidewalk. The fries were perfect, and the mac and cheese was delicious. The only slip was that, even after confirming by email that we could get beer or wine with lunch, we discovered there was no alcohol served until Wednesday afternoons at 5 pm (we were there Tuesday). Odd....but not worth a downgrade. One doesn't get to Brookneal by mistake, but it's worth driving out of the way to eat here. read more

We have eaten here several times and I have to say that it has really been great, but last night we came down for dinner and I was very upset with our experience. For starters, flies were sworming around us the entire time we were there, and yes we did complain about it. Our friend had the seared scallops and said they were very good, I had the Sugar Hill Chicken and enjoyed mine as well, but my partner had the ribs and was highly disappointed. They were extremely overcooked and dry as a bone and way too smoky flavored. He said that at least he had tried them, but would not do it again.
