I haven't been here since before Covid even though it is right around the corner from me. I always thought Pero's was subpar. But wow! I came here last week and it was delicious! I ordered the stuffed penne which was incredible! Vodka sauce is great and I love how many sun dried tomatoes they give you! I really enjoy the stuffed penne pasta shape and structure-- the pasta is thicker than ravioli which gives it a nicer chew. The portion size is also quite generous. I will definitely be returning to try their other pastas to see if they can compare. However, even if they aren't great, I would return for this pasta alone. Ambiance is nice- it feels quite cozy. Service was good- quite fast. Bread and Greek salad were tasty. No complaints there. Their pizza looks the same as before. I haven't tried it recently, but it was never my favorite- not bad, just not particularly good. Perhaps I will give it another try. WOW! Eating here with my big family brought me such joy! This is definitely a HIDDEN GEM! If you are a NYer, this place would make you proud. If you grew up eating Italian dinner in SouthFL with your NY family, this is a go-to! Before I get into the food, let me tell you about the staff and the ambiance of this place. The staff is top-notch! They are honest and on top of it. When they tell you what the best item on the menu is, they are no just saying it. They mean it! The restaurant is not super wide but is long. They can easily accommodate 12 in the back. The entrees come with a choice of House, Greek, or Caesar salad which could be a meal by itself. Warm rolls are served on the table as well. What our party ordered: -Calamari for the table- It was light and crispy. Served with marinara for dipping. -Minestrone soup- This huge bowl of soup has so much flavor! -Pizza with 3 toppings which my young niece loved! -Lasagna--this is their specialty and was LOVED -Spaghetti with meatballs. Huge portion that even my teen could not finish! -Eggplant Parmesan. AMAZING and so good that I ate the leftovers for breakfast! -Shrimp Marinara. Stopped in for dinner and can't say I was impressed. I had the Greek salad which was good the dressing was a bit sour. The calamari was fresh others said it was salty. The Alfredo had absolutely no taste even adding salt and pepper didn't help. I also got the trout which comes in a veal gravy, a bit weird having a fish in a meat gravy. I don't eat meat so I had to have mine remade but the fish was very fresh and string beans great. Our server was very attentive until around the end of the meal we had to finally ask for our check. It's a 4* purely for nostalgia. It's a 3* in reality but having so many memories of eating here as a kid, having the Pero's truck come to school on Fri (the best!) kicks it up. We went for your comfort food kinda pizza- regular crust, not fancy, just food. Half cheese and half mushroom and pepperoni- toppings were generous (even "just" cheese, unlike say Fellini's where you need to get extra cheese to feel like you're getting any!). Simple salad choices- the mixed had the most veggies so we picked that. The menu is huge and has all the feel good classics like chicken Parm (and mozzarella sticks you know are frozen but love anyway). They were very accommodating at letting us have 3 different toppings on half and 3 other toppings on other half. Server was helpful when answering questions. Pero's is an Italian and pizza restaurant that has been in Atlanta for over 40 years. It's located near the busy intersection of Northside Parkway and West Paces Ferry Road, near I-75. It's in the same shopping center as Houston's and The Flying Biscuit. I visited Pero's for lunch on a weekday and the shopping center was absolutely slammed. It was difficult to find parking. I ended up parking behind the restaurant and walking through the kitchen to get inside. As you can imagine from the length of time they've been open, this restaurant is old school Italian -- dimly lit, comfortable, and traditionally decorated. It's a casual place. They have TVs. The people who work here are very friendly. I know this is cliche, but they make you feel like family. At lunchtime, there was only one server, so service was slow. Our drinks never got refilled. Recognizing the slow service as I sat down, I decided to get the self-serve lunch buffet to save time (I'm sure the busy waitress appreciated it). The lunch buffet is served Monday-Friday, 11:00am-2:30pm. There's a pizza bar and a salad bar. If you want both, the buffet costs $7.95. Salad bar only is $6.95. The buffet is simple, but it gets the job done. The salad bar includes iceberg lettuce and mixed greens with red onion, grape tomatoes, cucumber, broccoli, potato salad, pasta salad, sliced grape tomato and cucumber with dressing, sliced hard boiled eggs, shredded cheddar cheese, cottage cheese, sliced peaches, and beets. Toppings include sesame seeds, raisins, bacon bits, and croutons with about a half dozen dressings plus oil and vinegar. The pizza bar has a rotating selection of pizzas, but only about two are at the bar at any given time. A few pizzas available during my visit included pepperoni, pepperoni and mushroom, and I think "Pero's Special" (pepperoni, mushroom, onion, sausage, and green pepper). They were sitting on circular pizza trays underneath heat lamps. Next to the pizza was a container of what look liked baked ziti -- it did not look terribly appetizing. I enjoyed my lunch visit. I hit both the salad bar and pizza bar twice each. The ingredients at the salad bar were fresh and reminded me of bagged or pre-packaged veggies you can buy at the grocery store, which isn't necessarily a bad thing (just an observation). The pizza was OK. It wasn't the freshest pizza in the world, but I wouldn't expect it to be since it's a buffet. The crusts of the pizzas had dried out a bit by the time I got to them and the cheese was a little rubbery, but as a whole, I still thought they were tasty and enjoyable enough. One of my tablemates ordered the Antipasto salad (Italian salad with salami, cheese, anchovies, olives, and peppers topped with homemade Italian dressing) and it looked huge. He's been a regular at Pero's for years, likes the place, and recommends the Antipasto. I wouldn't mind coming back and ordering something off their menu of pizza, pastas, salads, and sandwiches. If you live within four miles, thought the family spaghetti pack was a great value. I had it delivered to my home and the salad was gorgeous with green and Greek olives. The hot food arrived hot and the bread was particularly delicious as well. If you live within four miles, feed four (at minimum) well for not so much money. I have been looking for a good pizza place in Atlanta for a long time, and I think I've found it. I grew up in Southeast Michigan, where you can't swing a cat without hitting a great local pizza place, and I am very pleased to find a local place here in Atlanta that measures up to real pizza parlors / Italian restaurants. It's kind of like finding an oasis in what has otherwise proven to be a pizza desert. My pizza was hot, delicious, and perfectly cooked. I also ordered an order of the meatballs (tender and flavorful; the marinara in which they were served was particularly excellent) and St. Louis-style toasted ravioli (crispy and flavorful). We stumbled upon this tiny restaurant in the Paces Ferry Plaza randomly one night when we decided not to stick out the traditional hour + wait at Houston's. Upon entering, I knew immediately the spot was owned by a New Yorker as I felt I had entered an old school Italian join in little Italy, Bronx. The Food: we ordered a mozzarella sticks, margherita pizza and a side of spaghetti w/meat sauce. The pizza was the best thing about this meal. My husband didn't care for his spaghetti w/meat sauce but I would come back for the pizza alone. The Service: extremely family friendly spot and the staff is very, very friendly! They take hospitality very seriously and the owner is there nightly. Owner stopped by, sat with us and chatted it up for some time (a little too long, but we get it). The Ambiance: think old New York. Nothing fancy. Neighborhood joint. Bottom line: if you live in the west paces ferry area and are looking for a good neighborhood pizza spot (especially good for families), this is your go-to. Ate at Pero's last night for the first time and really enjoyed my meal. The restaurant itself is a little bit on the small and tacky side, but that is ok. It reminds me of a small Italian joint I worked in while I was in college. Lots of tacky pictures, mirrors and flare surround the dining room at Pero's. While it is tacky it still exudes a little bit of a romantic vibe expected of Italian restaurants. The server we had was very nice and very much on the ball. She greeted us, got our drinks to the table, took our order and delivered our food within a timely manner. She even followed the "2 minute rule" of checking back after we began eating, to ensure our food was to our liking. For dinner we started with the Greek salad that was pretty good; mixed greens topped with feta, red onion, tomato, black olives, and drizzled with a vinaigrette dressing. Our main course we split the Spinach Walnut Ravioli which was great; the red sauce on the ravioli was very good, it tasted as if it had a little Alfredo in it. There are morons. There are idiots. There are imbeciles. And then, there is Pero's Pizza. EVERY single time I have placed a pickup or takeout order from Pero's they have fu*ked it up!!! This is not hyperbole; EVERY fu*king time! Tonight I placed an order at 601p and was told it would be ready at 626p. At 645p and with very little communication before, they asked for my "confirmation code." They never even placed my order. Sorry, been going to this $hit hole for 30yrs+ and never have been asked for a confirmation code. Why pay for this ridiculously OVER PRICED Gigi's Pizza!!??? The management is absolutely positively INCOMPETENT, and they offer zero caring. I guess it begins from the top (Charlie). Also, I noticed the stellar health score of 88. Nice! Very nice. We went to Pero's tonight. The restaurant was pretty empty. Our waitress Jennifer is the reason that none of us will return. We ordered, had our meal and tried to get our check! She was chatting with others at another table and ignored us. We tried again, tried to get her attention and again she ignored us. We asked another waiter to send her over and he tried but she ignore him also. After fifteen minutes we finally stood up and went to the front desk to pay. We told them that they would lose customers with waitresses like her. Then she came back and said she had to divide our bill and we " could wait another few minutes"!!!! This was said in a very nasty tone!! We left and she followed us to the parking lot and called us Nasty Women and if we ever came back she would never wait on us again!!! She doesn't have to worry as the four of us will never go back! I don't think I have ever been treated like this in a restaurant! We are four very polite women who just needed to leave after our dinner. She should be ashamed of herself for treating us like that! We will not return! read more
