Tales from the Hood Run from this crypt of an alleged funeral home that resembles "Tales from the Hood" HBO series . Giving this review is feel physically sickened just thinking about how dirty and creepy interior chapel is that housed my brother. Everything chair, pillar and kneeling bench was dusty, dirty or cracked. I did not have any input on the selection of this home, as my brother's immediate family resides in New Jersey and we traveled from Atlanta, California and South Carolina. Con's: there are zero positives. The staff onsite was minuscule, poorly dressed and lacked professional as they are rule and simply ignorant - lacking empathy. My brother's makeup appeared cheap and lacked lively blending and texture. It appeared one color was just smeared over his entire face, including lips. The final facial appearance looked like he had been accident, but he died of natural causes - without a fall or injury. Bruises from the IV were very visible below is suit arms. I requested correction during the viewing but he was unchanged at the funeral. The building ceiling has leaked stained dated tiles . At the procession the drivers were worst than a taxi driver - they did. It escort or open the door for us. They left the doors open for you to seat yourself. The vehicles were dirty and had been either keyed or wrecked . The chapel was dirty and the staff allowed the next family to enter the chapel during our funeral, as it ran over time . I could say much more but I can barely thinking about the lack of service, cleanliness and unprofessionalism. The burial service was just poor, lacked feeling and pathetic. I wish I had something good to say, but this book cover is as ugly and worse inside . Lastly, I pray my brother body was not disrespect during his stay? service was phenomenal, Perry Funeral Home staff was very hospitable especially one of their workers I believe his name is Christian. everything for our loved one was spot on she was at peace and enjoying heaven .Mr Sam Arnold is the amazing and worked with us not against us. Price of the service was fair and reasonable and all I can say is when you love someone you'll make sure that even in their demise they'll be take care of y'all need to contact Perry and allow them to assist you. read more

If I could give a zero or lower rating I would. Don't trust your lived ones at this god awful place! They do not empathize with grieving families at all. Back on Dec. '22 we suffered a sudden loss of our son. We called Perry's the very next day of the tragedy and had an appt. scheduled with Ms. Perry or Sam Arnold. We met with Mr Arnold and at first he appeared to be helpful but as the days passed and we had more questions he became very impatient with his tone and responses. As the date of the funeral got closer we had a hiccup with the original cemetery and Mr. Arnold did not offer an alternative but only to move the date back another weeks leaving our son in a freezer for almost 4 weeks!! That was not going to happen. So we had to call several cemeteries who could accommodate our original date. For families who are still grieving this should not have gone down like that. Anyway we get to the day to view the body and see our son stuffed in the casket, suit all bunched up and BLOOD on his hand!! It was traumatizing. MR ARNOLD was no where to be found that day. Instead these 2 elderly men were there who looked like they had been drinking. One of them took Olive Oil Hair Sheen and a rag to wipe off the blood! I lost my mind! We found ourselves fixing our sons clothes and straightening out the bib in the casket that they had him all bunched in. It was horrendous!! The day of the funeral we had to direct the events ourselves since our so called Funeral Director was no where to be found. Instead he stayed locked in his office the entire service. And not to mention Ms Perry, the thin high yellow diva was there and heard our cries but not once did she address us! There's more but I think what's said here is enough! Don't even bother patronizing them. They are the epitome of bad black owned business.. they fit perfectly into the negative stereotype. read more

The fact is we couldn't have a funeral we are aware of that, 5 people were able to come for a viewing, I'm not complaining about that, I'm angry that they had the nerve to show us her rotting body with her clothes laid out on them, not on, a plastic bag was what was on her body. We payed for embalming and a full funeral but we understood due to Covid it would just be a viewing of her embalmed body.After 93 years that's the respect they thought she deserved, my grandmother was recognized as a pillar of Essex County, even a paupers grave is treated with more respect. The funeral home reached out after they saw my posts all over the website and told us it had been a mistake a mix up. Why should anyone be subjected to the disrespect she was? And now come to find out they have been telling people that called we told them they were not welcome to pay respects and they she had already been cremated The image and smell of seeing my grandmothers rotting corpse will stick with us forever. The fact we are not considered the "big business " you deal with will be with me forever. They desecrated my grandmothers death. I'm so sorry to everyone in the family that has been affected, but I'm also relieved you didn't have to see what we were subjected too. read more

This funeral home is lucky i can only pick one star. This place gave a woman who wasn't even related to my grandfather all the rights while ignoring my mom who was the power of attorney and executrix of my grandfather. They rushed his service giving her no say not only doing that but giving paperwork to this woman and completely ignoring my grandfathers wishes. During the service the speaker stopped to say there is another service so we are going to cut this short completely disrespecting my grandfather then one of the workers walked in interrupting the speakers prayer saying let's get our last looks in. The prayer wasn't even finished. I wouldn't even want my worse enemy to get buried here. This place is disgusting the way they do bust is disgusting. Money hungry business with no respect for the Deceased. My grandfather deserved more then this. read more

They got my insurance check and keep giving me the run around about the balance it's my money they got paid there's why won't they give me money this is a stressful situation that they are only making worst If you have a life insurance policy please have them pay you directly and you pay them or they will hold on to your money read more

If I could leave ZERO stars trust me I would. This was the most unprofessional place I have ever witnessed. My family arranged my grandfathers services with them and I guess because there wasn't a huge pay out in it for them our grieving didn't matter. I mean they literally treated us as if we didn't matter and in the process broke my grandmothers heart while she was already dealing with the stress of saying goodbye to her husband of over 50 years. During the quality check of the body we were treated as if we were a burden to them and even during the services while asking what certain paperwork was that we were asked to sign by them instead of explaining we were nastily told "I don't know, how about you read it". My grandfather was a vet and you would think after honorably serving his country he would've been laid to rest with some dignity and respect but I guess you only get that if you come with big bucks at Perry's Funeral Home. If you care about your loved one please don't take them here; no one should have to experience what we did with these people while you're grieving . . . just plain unacceptable. Shame on you all; especially that nasty lady that works in the office ! read more

I recently lost a family member and used Perry's services. They did a good job with the appearance of my aunt, but as far as information on the website it was incorrect as well as over the telephone. When I called to confirm visitation times I was given two answers. The last gentleman was very rude on the telephone and some of my family members experienced the same behavior. Due to this mix up, many people didn't show up for the viewing because they were told it wasn't taking place and it was. This funeral home has been in Newark a long time and usually works with the family regarding the fee, but Perry's should give the services promised. I believe they are comfortable and take Newark customers for granted. I for one in the future will search around and use someone else. It's difficult enough to lose a family member and have to deal with incompetent and rude staff. read more

I recently lost a friend, and Wednesday was the service 9/2/2015, and they had so many funerals going on this day,where it was so unorganized, first my beloved friend was in the basement, where as it was hot, very crowded cause she knew many people, wasn't enough chairs to seat everyone, secondly there was another body in the back of hers to where as they couldn't open up the back to make more room because of the other deceased person who was also in the basement, thirdly all my friend visitors had to come back upstairs to be seated until her service began in the chapel upstairs,Fourthly, then they rolled my friend's body through the hallway to the chapel where everybody was waiting for her service (very unprofessional), Lastly the service they prepared for my friend was not a good one at all, not saying all Perry's business be bad but this particular service was completely corrupted, just wish they would improve more when dealing with a loved one remains, and make the families of the deceased a little more satisfied with their professionalism. read more
