What I found when I went to toss the bag after it was empty was a small sticker at the bottom that said "OOPS! 50% off Additional Savings". So....I got ripped off. Mistake? Perhaps - I don't know - but I do not have much faith left in big chains. These recurring shipments provide a tremendous opportunity to dump old and expired product. BTW - when you do get recurring shipments - after the first shipment of "35% off", you get a 5% discount. But Petco adds a 10% mandatory tip for the driver - so you really are paying 105%. Maybe it's worth it to you. I don't have an issue with tipping delivery people. It's just not usual for big chains to add a mandatory tip. And they don't advertise it until checkout. read more

I am writing to formally complain about an extremely poor customer service experience related to an online purchase and return with Petco. I ordered a 40-lb cat litter online. The package was delivered broken, with the box damaged and litter spilled everywhere. This alone was unacceptable. My wife contacted Petco customer service requesting a replacement, but we were told that phone support could not help and that the item must be returned to a local Petco store. I went to the Petco location at 6236 N Western Ave, carrying the damaged 40-lb litter. The store manager, Cairo could not locate the order and he needs Petco app to find it but he App was was on my wife's phone. As a result, I had to return home to retrieve her phone. I asked a very reasonable question: whether I could leave the 40-lb damaged box at the store while I went home and came back. The manager refused and told me I had to take it with me. This forced me to carry and transport a heavy, broken box back and forth, wasting time and causing unnecessary physical strain. The round trip took approximately 15 minutes and was entirely avoidable. When I returned with my wife's phone, I showed him the app and two photos clearly indicating that the order was split. Only then did he locate the order using the second tracking number and process the refund. This raises a serious question: Why could the order not be found initially when the split shipment information was already visible?(it's clearly show that the order was split on the picture I showed him at the store) And more importantly, why was I treated in a way that made the return process unnecessarily difficult and burdensome? While the damaged delivery itself was frustrating, what upset me most was the lack of consideration and poor treatment during the return process. Customers should not be made to suffer because of Petco's delivery and system issues. As a result of this experience, I have already decided that my family will no longer use Petco, even if prices are lower than competitors such as Amazon. I will also be sharing this experience with friends and family and specifically advising them to avoid the Petco location at 6236 N Western Ave. I expect this complaint to be taken seriously and addressed appropriately. 2 cashiers seemed too busy to ring me up. When I asked the delay, was told a customer went outside and would be back. After a few minutes, I asked why I couldn't be rung up on a different register, or why the other chatty worker wouldn't ring up my cart. She said to just wait. I told her I shouldn't have to wait if there's Noone else in-store and my cart is ready for purchases. Was told sorry, customer would come back from parking lot, I waited before realizing waiting 20 plus minutes to purchase products was unacceptable and left my cart for her to put everything back away before store closing. This is the only Petco I've gone to where I get a whiff of an unpleasant odor of pet hair/dander as soon as I walk into the store-- I feel bad for the employees who have to breathe it all day! Y'all should really look into that, maybe it's your carpeting or air duct vent filters or something that needs replacing. It's quite rancid and has almost made me gag. Also, out of nowhere this location stopped stocking pretty much ALL of the flavors of canned wet food that I had been purchasing for ages. When I inquired about it the store employees had no information, even though this is the Petco house brand of canned food that has been available for many years. Today I had an 8am appointment in the grooming department but woke up late because I had some pinch in my back anyway I called to reschedule my appointment but was given grace and Sofia booked me for same day just gave me time to get to the store. Wow I just love this place. Honestly they make you feel so happy safe and seen with your pet. It took me years to find a place like this where you feel comfortable coming back. I love this store, especially the friendly people who work there. It's a small neighborhood location, so while that definitely creates limitations, I like that it's handy. Beyond dogs and cats, this store has an exceptional fish section. It's small, but the staff are knowledgeable and really work at making it a stand out. As Petco's delivery and repeat order processes have improved, so has the connection with my local store. There are so many quality independent pet stores in Chicago that one should only go here in desperation because their local pet store doesn't stock what they need. That's what brought me here. I was willing to overlook the disorganized aisles and overall feel of having entered into a hoarder's home. All I wanted was a specialized fish filter. There was one employee for the entire store, and line of 6 people waiting to speak to him. So you begin to observe the place and figure out what happened - some private equity company has bought Petco and is just running it into the ground. It's sad. The living conditions of the pets in the store seem like they were devised by a disturbed child on his path to serial infamy. If we weren't in a large city with overwhelmed inspectors, this place would have been boarded up and declared a superfund site. If you want to support this store, set their animals free, find the employees new jobs, and chain the doors. Otherwise, stay far far away! read more

Are used to love this store until I had an interaction with a very young pregnant girl that claims to be your manager. You really need to train people and customer service. I used to shop at the store all of the time and buy many fish and other items for my pets here I will no longer do that due to this rude inconsiderate person that should not be claiming to be a manager. Not only were the tanks they keep their fish in absolutely filthy, but the surly employee working the checkout counter was the pièce de résistance of this horrid establishment. This woman was needlessly aggressive, accusatory, and pretentious when I asked if I could purchase a shrimp from one of the tanks - one of the seldom few that actually looked clean, mind you. Demanding to know how long my tank had been running, how many gallons were in it, and so on as though I were an insolent child looking to purchase a live jaguar. The ordeal ended with her essentially dismissing me, evidently dissatisfied with my responses to her interrogation, and I left sans-shrimp. GROOMING CENTER I have never been devastated by a groomer and am not one to be unfair. The first question I asked was if my dog was fidgety or misbehaving and their answer was no - so there was no reason why she should have come out so badly. Her ear length was entirely gone and uneven, the body was entirely uneven. We brought in a picture and the "groomers" looked at it and confirmed to understand yet she came out SOOO different and unrecognizable. This review is for the self service dog wash only. It is reasonable and better than washing Bandit in our tub at home. I bring my own shampoo, as he has very sensitive skin. The sinks were clogged and the water ran very hot and I could not control the temp. There were not enough restraints for each washing station, so I had to use my own collar and leash(asked about getting another one for my wash station, they had no more)The towels were plentiful, thankfully, as my dog really does not like the blower(it was cold anyway). Three stars,only for the fact that I did not have to struggle with him in our tub at home or get down on my hands and knees to wash him. I've been to this store several times and the staff has *always* been superior. But not yesterday. The balding, older man with glasses who was at the check out counter around 4:30 p.m. was a jerk. After searching for the dog food I needed and not seeing it I started looking for a clerk to ask if there was food in the store room they hadn't put out. The only clerk I found was working with someone else, so I went to the check out counter to ask if "all the Purina Pro Plan is out on the floor? Or is there more in back?" The balding, older man with glasses, put down his Coke, sighed and said snottily, "the WHAT? What Poroor Pan." (He said it like I had mumbled.) I said, enunciating, "The Purina Pro Plan, is that all you have? Or is there more in the back." He snottily replied, "Uh, what for. A dog? Or a cat?" I said, "Oh, a dog." He said, rudely, "No, it's all out. There's none in the back." I said, "Okay, sorry to have bothered you. It's just that there weren't any other clerks to help me." And of course, the other clerk came walking by at that moment and he does this weird waving/pointing hand gesture and rudely exclaims, "She's right there!" I said, "She was helping another customer. Thank you for your help. You've been very kind." Dick. To the balding older man with glasses: I get that perhaps this isn't the job you want or that maybe you were having a bad day or whatever. Although I suppose they have a decent brand selection of cat and dog food, they are very lacking in the other categories. Although they sell lots of brands, it's all old. I've found expired bags of cat food on the shelves. Do you know what the shelf-life of dry pet food is? A pretty long time. They sell one brand of ferret food (despite the fact that they sell ferrets) and occasionally, they'll have a few dented cardboard cans of hedgehog food. Both the hedgehog and ferret food that they have is low quality. If you're only going to have one brand, please have it be good quality. I mean, seriously! And if you insist on it being total garbage, don't make me pay 18$ for a tiny container that'll last me about a week. Speaking of the Hedgehog thing, the last time I went in there, this is the conversation that transpired between me and the Blue Polo-Shirted employee. Me:"Hi, do you have any hedgehog food? I didn't see any over there." Blue-Shirt: "What are you looking for?" Me:"Food. For my hedgehog." Blue-shirt:"Your what?" Me: "My Hedgehog." Blue-Shirt: "Huh?" Me: "What, really? They're like little porcupine things, kind of." Blue-shirt: "Oh. I dunno." Are you kidding? Homeslice, you work in a pet store! How do you not know what kinds of pets exist? That's like a Gap employee not knowing what pants are. Or the color Tan. The other thing about the employees there is that they seem to be overstaffed and they don't do anything. Stalking the staff here is kind of fun because I kind of feel like a spy, and have to try to calculate their next move, so I can head them off at the next isle as opposed to continuing to trail them through racks of dusty, crushed, torn and expired products. And trying to leap over all the trash and fallen boxes on the floor is almost like boot camp. In fact, between chasing employees around and jumping over things on the floor, it would be more economical for me just to cancel my gym membership. And, the store is so filthy that, like a gym, I always have to shower when I get home! The whole Touhy Petco Experience is thoroughly surreal. And not in a good way. read more

This Petco is (or at least appears to be) severely understaffed. We stopped by on Monday 3/16 night to get our dog's food and some treats for our gerbil. We knew what we wanted, so we were quick. However, when we went up to the front, no one was at the register. There were already two people waiting when we got there. Looking around, we only saw one older lady helping someone with fish. I tried to get her attention, but she didn't seem to notice me. We were about ready to just walk out. We waited for what seemed like forever (which probably actually was 10 minutes or so) until the same fish lady came to ring people out. At that point, there were at least 4 people behind us. I actually used to work at a Petco back in college, so I was embarrassed by the level of service at this location. I'll likely end up going to the River North location off of Orleans after work. We go to both Petsmart and Petco for our cat supplies, but I told my husband we should go to Petco more due to their cash back rewards program. Much to my surprise, the same bag of cat litter that we usually get at Petsmart for $14.49 was $17.99 today at Petco! Same brand, same size. I don't think so. Plus this store doesn't have the same vibe for me as the one on Skokie Blvd. This one is cold and I didn't see any sales associates around besides the sole cashier who couldn't leave her register. In the Skokie store someone's always around. But cost is a real issue for us. I am hard pressed to pay more for something I know I can get cheaper elsewhere. Three stars. Very mellow. Had the dogfood that Petsmart didn't have. Nobody's hanging out up front by the check out lines, in fact it seems like nobody in that store cares SO MUCH that you could throw cans and treats and magazines about birds (who buys those?) into your pockets and walk out the door with no one giving a crap. Almost like a warehouse because it's so desolate. The thing that really gives it some sugar is that the girl who just punched in and passed by the two other employees chatting who were being lazy asses. She checked me out, and at first had zero smile but then kind of warmed up during our petfood transaction and then asked me if I was missing a dog or knew anyone who was because she had seen a stray pit roaming around not too far away, she followed it because it seemed to be leading her somewhere. She thought it may have been to where he lived. Nobody knew whose dog it was (this was nearby the store) so she brought him in to Petco (work, for her) and she's asking around so she can find the owner. I hope she did, she pretty much lit up the store with her awesomeness. And so. Three stars. Not a glamorous spot like Petsmart (hahaha) but nothing wrong with it that I could see. The staff there is knowledgeable, nice, and always helpful. Went in one day to grab cat & dog food with my kids and of course my boys went to the reptile section to look at the animals. One of the store associates took out a snake and talked to my kids about it and she let them pet it. Another associate helped me with recommendations for food and kitty litter for our new kitten. Unfortunately, yes there is an older gentleman that cannot hear well, but I shrug it off cause I know what the rest of the staff is capable of: great customer service. I have also taken my miniature poodle for grooming and they always take care of him, get him done quick and looking handsome. His groomer Anibal is nice, explains the process, and calls me when he's just about done so he doesn't have to be in a cage. Thank you Petco staff! Had a coupon for a free can of cat food & some coupons for $3 off 12 cans of cat food, so stopped in here. Nobody was in the parking lot, I thought YAY for me! Went in, and got my free can of cat food, and was about to get more (to use my coupon), but the prices were HIGH. I checked the prices from every canned cat food from Meow mix to Science Diet to the most expensive kind. Petco charges about $0.08 to $0.30 more PER can. Even if I used my coupon, it still wasn't a deal. I was disappointed, but made me realize that Petsmart is the place to go. Cashier was friendly. I just recently moved to the area and was happy to see a PetCo was within walking distance and went into the store with my dog. I was horrified to see what appeared to be mouse droppings near the treat counter near the entrance of the store and when me and my pup went towards the food section my dog became distracted by something moving on the floor. IT WAS A RAT CLIMBING UNDER THE DOG FOOD. I'm disgusted this is not safe! Especially because dogs come into this store and could easily get parasites or illnesses from rats! I don't own any pets, so I don't have a reason to come to a pet store . Well, yesterday I decided to stop by here. I immediately got drawn to the reptiles section. I used to own a veiled chameleon many years ago, so when I saw the cute baby chameleons I spent good 10 minutes checking them out. One of the employees named Christina ( nor sure how her name is spelled, but she's a girl in her late 20's with red hair) saw me looking at the little cute creatures, and asked me if I needed assistance. We started talking, and turns out she is very knowledgeable about reptiles. Like beyond well informed on all their needs. For example I never knew veiled chameleon needs 3 different types of special lamps. The store looked clean, and well organized. They have all the pet foods, aquariums, stuff for fish tanks, terrariums. Ofcourse they got plenty of treats, and toys for your 4 legged furr babies. They had some neat aquariums with all kinds of pretty fish in them. I'm still contemplating buying a chameleon, only thing I hate about having one is that you gotta feed it crickets, and mealworms. I'm a bit squeamish when it comes to that. They have their own parking, which is always nice. I would recommend this store for sure. read more

They hit a home run if you are seeking rude trolls, long wait times, and more dead fish than your local Red Lobster. To expand your joy you'll need a search party to find the staff (trolls) to help you. It's like the worst scavenger hunt you'll ever have the displeasure of doing! You'll eventually find one of the angry trolls to help you though so don't worry. We made the mistake of asking one troll which tank light was the best for the tank we were buying. She pointed over at some and said, "well there's those but those are too expensive." and then walked away in a tone that suggested a "job well done." She came back by and seemed disappointed in the fact that we were purchasing the "too expensive" option. This confused me as I was taught that being an important aspect of capitalism. This troll would prefer if you didn't spend more money in the store. We needed fish, so we intiated the scavenger hunt again. This time we were rewarded with a different troll. This one had the same charm as the "too expensive" lid troll but was a little more aggressive. He seemed upset that we wanted to get the fish. He asked us if we wanted anything else, I said yes a different fish.. He snapped "well you could have told me so I didn't have to put them in SEPERATE BAGS!" This troll also seemed upset about the basket that contained the hundreds of dollars of items we were buying as he kicked it out of the way and sighed. Damn baskets. Trolls hate baskets. Time to check out. We assumed that our Western Ave Petco nightmare was over. But like any good horror flick, there was a twist... There was a long line and even more terrible customer service to come... Ahhhhh the horror. A register goes down and instead of helping the growing line of saps waiting to pay for their goods, the two trolls and another employee stand around one register. I place my things on the counter and the aggressive troll grabbed the basket out of my hand. Remember... Trolls hate baskets. We paid for our things. But then said we already left with our fish. The aggressive troll seemed to have lossed his ability to speak began to grunt and point. I asked him if he could please use his words. Fish. There. "Yes but we also have fish over there... Remember the 2nd bag?" Reluctantantly the aggressive troll handed us the fish. They didn't have any bags. So we gathered our things and left beleaguered to never return. read more

I've never left a Yelp review, but when I visited Petco Friday evening and had my worst customer service experience to date, I knew I had to leave one. I usually go to the Lincoln Square area Petco or Ruff Haus Pets on Rockwell, but this Petco was closer to my apartment.For starters, the store is dirty. I went in looking for a fish tank only to find dead flies in the tanks, and opened bedding sitting out in the middle of a shelf. I walked around for at least 20 minutes without a single employee asking if I needed anything. They were all yelling and laughing elsewhere in the store. There happened to be a representative from Wellness in the store who ended up asking if I needed anything. After about another 20 minutes, a really nice employee who I never got the name of helped me find the correct aquarium lid and plants. I will not be returning to this Petco. read more

BEWARE. I took my four year old Pekingese/Maltese here to get his haircut and it will be the LAST time I EVER take my sweetheart there. I was told that the new groomer Lilly has 10 years of experience, so I decided to give her a try. So I drop him off for his 10 AM appointment and he's wasn't even ready til like 3PM. When I went to pick him up I kept saying to her that he doesn't look right. His anus was red raw like wtf?! He looked like he was wearing mc hammer pants, so I asked if she could trim it up a bit more. She started to then handed me her shears to do it. Umm, I'm like I'm in the beauty industry, but I don't do hair. That's why I'm paying you to be the expert. I kept asking like why does his anus look so red, she said his glands were impacted, but they were unusually red. She carved out his anal area, knicked his balls, as well as, shaved him with no guard his whole underbelly, so he was naked with areas that have raw/scratched patches. She also has zero blending techniques; like friar tuck's tonsure my dog's back is fluffy and his belly is naked! Who does this to a show dog breed?! He had a fluffy face and she shaved unevenly the top of his head so his facial expressions are now just big brown eyes blinking no eyebrows. Lilly is in denile, like she's selling me the emperors new clothes. "Oh your dog is wet that's why he looks like that." No Lilly whether wet or dry you screwed up my dogs coat. Even implying that I could've done something to him myself like shave him after we left. No Lilly that's why I paid you for your expertise. "Hello Petco, she needs more training." I asked her where she went to grooming school she said it was confidential. I asked to see her groomers license and said its not required in the state of Illinois. really ok, I am appalled by her response because it shows me she is not legit. Like I said, I am in the beauty industry, so I thought she was a fellow skilled professional. Nope. Again Petco, this lady needs training. I don't even know how she passed the interview let alone became the manager?! So my fellow Rogers Park community pet parents, I'm warning you, don't let your dog or cat become her next victim of her inability to execute what she thinks she can do when you could do it yourself better and save yourself some money. And yes I did get refunded, but this was bad enough for me to have to warn you. I know that I'm like the second complaint so I know I'm not just complaining to be a jerk. My dog has swag and is super cute, so it's just a matter of time for his hair to grow back. Unfortunately in the time that it will take to grow back Lilly may be still hacking up your pet.
