I've known the owner Prentice Kidd for years. I loved his program and thought he was great. He has great knowledge on dog training. I let him train my dog for basic training. I was able to see how he treats people's dog when they leave their dog with him for weeks of training. Once I started to really look at his program I was able to really see his program for what it is. I've seen him not feed people's dogs for days, leave them in their kennels (crying & barking) for 10 hrs at a time. Ive heard him talk about clients in such a disrespectful way. I've seen him be cruel and abusive towards dogs that were left in his care for training. He told me that results is all that matters. I would never let him train anything of mine again. read more

Chicago Canine Co. helped me train my dog. He is an American Staffordshire terrier. My previous dogs were very laid back, love everyone and everything dogs. My terrier was very loving but a handful. He showed me how to kennel train him and earn his respect by being the boss. No punishments! His punishments were actually just denying him the treats he loved. The dog was very food motivated. He loved those hot dogs and cheese treats. Since he got rewarded every time he did something right he was very disappointed when he did something he wasn't supposed to and was refused his goodie. My puppy Apollo has been attending doggie daycare here for the last few weeks and the care and facilities have been EXCELLENT. Everything is immaculately clean, the dogs are supervised to ensure that everyone is having fun safely and it's extremely affordable. Prentice has been a pleasure to deal with and even took our puppy while recovering from surgery and made sure he was separated while he recovered. I am amazed at Prentice and his expertise in dog behavior and training. I enjoyed learning from him and working with our dog with him and at home. I was super impressed by the results we have gotten! I was very proud of our dog and how she progressed. We were there to train a service dog, and Prentice and his team were patient with all our family members. Prentice even went above and beyond and talked to our child's school about dog training and all that was going into getting the dog ready to be a service animal in the community. What I have experienced with training dogs is that more depends on the owner than the dog- the dog responds to how it has been treated and conditioned to expect. To change behavior and train new ones takes work- more on the owner to change how they interact with the dog. Prentice is great at explaining this and it up to the owner to follow through. The dog does get all the food it needs and it is up to the trainer to train everyday. When the dog is done with training then it is fine to feed out of the bowl and live like a pet. We have a 9 year old rescue sanctuary dog that we have been caring for a little over 2 years. He came to us with a lot of baggage due to poor training from his previous trainer. For our peace of mind and his safety we felt it best that he remain in our care. Diesel has issues with other dogs and needs an experienced handler when not in our home. He becomes a completely different and aggressive dog in a boarding environment and does not fare well due to his fear and anxiety. We were afraid that we could never leave town due to his behavior. Meeting Jonathan and Mandy was a Godsend. Diesel immediately bonded with both of them and felt at ease. I did not feel anxious or sick bringing him to their facility. My husband and I are professional dog trainers that are new to sport training. We were were looking for an organized and effective training plan for our 15 month old, male German Shepherd puppy, Nero, in order to help prep him for his first PSA trial in January. We spent one week training with Jonathan and the staff of Chicago Canine. We went to Jonathan hoping to walk away with a few new tips and tricks, but instead walked away with a new dog! The progress that was made in one week absolutely blows my mind. We now have a solid strategy and training plan that was personalized for our goals and our dog. When I first arrived at Chicago Canine Company, I had a male 7-month-old German Shepherd puppy named Klaus that was reactive, aggressive and on the destructive path to being a liability and danger to himself and those around me. I had called to talk to Prentice Kidd multiple times prior to my meeting him and while not fully convinced of his ability to help us, I went for an in-person evaluation. While I loved my dog, he was becoming too aggressive and I worried one day he would attack someone, especially a child. Even as I scheduled the appointment, I had to pin him down in the elevator of my building to keep him from attacking someone waiting to get in. We turned a corner once and he lunged so hard, the resident had to throw herself out of his way because he caught air from how fast he went after her. It was getting out of hand. When I arrived at Prentice's facility, we walked in and on cue Klaus started lunging, barking, snarling - his fur was on edge and I could not control my dog. There was a couple there as well and while I apologized profusely for my lack of control, they both said they'd been there too. Klaus was still barking and lunging when Prentice came up to me and said give me the leash. I did as he instructed and he walked to the other side of the room with my dog and tethered him to the wall so we could talk about Klaus' behavioral needs. At first, I was very skeptical of the process he was describing and if he truly could do what he said he could. Prentice does not say things softly - he speaks frankly and without thoughts for feelings. While a bit put off by the way he carried himself, I was hopeful because he did not show fear when handling my dog, nor did he look overwhelmed. He told me to trust the process and that while it might be hard it would be worth it. I was given the options of paying for 30, 60, or 90 days up front and I knew that I had to go the full 90 as Prentice recommended. I was still skeptical of him and his methodology, but I saw the way he listened to Klaus and was unafraid and I decided to go all in. I've read what other reviews say about his training methods and while they are not for the faint of heart, they were what Klaus and I needed to be able to grow together. The first 30 days were miserable for both of us. I had months of mis-handling to make up for and it hurt me as his owner to know that my inexperience and lack of knowledge lead my dog down such a destructive path. Klaus was frustrated, I was hurting and there were many days I felt like I had failed my dog and I cried because I knew he was unhappy and it was my fault for not being a better owner. But I took solace in the fact that I was now seeking help and that we would get through this together. It was hard but I immediately noticed progress. He was becoming confident, Klaus was believing in himself now, he was not as reactive and I was encouraged to continue the training even though there were days I was so drained from the day prior - I would not stop because I saw Klaus becoming better and better. Now 3 months into the training, Klaus is confident, eager, and excited. He's adjusted and I can take him out on walks now without fear from either of us. The same lady he almost attacked rode down in the elevator with us together, fed him, and now he sees her, sits and wants a treat from her every time. The change is outstanding and everyone in my building has noticed and congratulate me on the progress Klaus has made. I am overwhelmed when I see him confidently executing my commands, when I see him eager to spend time with me. I am now as important to him as he is to me and there is no better feeling in the world than the way he looks at me and not at everything else he could be distracted by. But more than anything, I am overwhelmed when I see how happy he is and who he is becoming now that I am the handler and owner he deserves. He is now his best self because I now know how to guide and lead him. It was a painful, emotional and arduous road to get here but I am closer to him now than I have ever been. We both grew together, we've bonded together, and I have earned his trust to lead him down the right path. I know he will only continue to get better and better and I cannot wait to see what his full potential is come the 1-year marker. I don't think I'd have the relationship I do with Klaus that I do now if I had not taken that leap of faith and trusted Prentice and his process. He's given me the relationship I've always wanted with my dog and that is something I could never put a price on. read more

We boarded our male Shepherd/Cattle dog mix and our female mixed breed (Mutt) here for 9 days. We have a four year old longhaired German Shepherd (Axel), that we needed to board for a week. We didn't think anyone would be able to handle him so we were looking for a facility that provided in and out privileges. We contacted Chicago Canine Company and Prentice suggested we bring him in for an assessment. To our surprise, within five minutes, Prentiss was able to handle our dog. Although Axel had previous training, he still had serious aggression and socialization issues. Shortly after being able to handle Axel, Prentice had him performing commands from his previous training. Again we were completely amazed and thoroughly impressed. When we dropped him off for boarding, Prentice was able to pick up where he left off with Axel. Before we left, we agreed to have Axel groomed. We didn't know how that was going to work out. When I picked Axel up, he was in a room playing with other dogs. I was in awe and totally speechless. Prentice also showed me a video of him at playtime. It was so great to see our dog was learning to play with other dogs as well as other people. He was quite handsome from the grooming, which I thought could never happen. Prentice suggested once a week daycare to continue improving his development and we definitely plan to work on making that happen. Prentice is very knowledgeable about dog behavior and needs. I am so glad I found Chicago Canine Company!! Prentice Kidd really helped us with our two big puppies. One is a pitbull mix name Lani who was 7 months old when we started with Prentice and one is a Great Pyrenees mix name Finn who was 5 months old. Both big strong dogs. My husband is very busy most of the week so I am the one who has to do a lot of the handling. But I am small so walking the two dogs is incredibly exhausting and difficult. They pull me everywhere and since they're not even a year old they also have crazy puppy energy. I actually had to start walking them one at a time because it just got so unmanageable together and doing so took a huge chunk of time out of my day. At home, they demanded my attention constantly. If I'm on a phone call or doing work on my laptop or cooking, or anything where I'm occupied for more than 10-15 minutes Lani would start looking for things to drag around in front of me so I'd pay attention to her or they'd chew at our baseboards or Finn would tear up their beds and toys. I've taken Lani to an other training facility before going to Prentice and it honestly felt like a waste of time and money. Almost everything they taught in class Lani was already able to do, Like sit, down, basic commands etc. But I learned nothing about actual obedience training. Any time I asked the trainer something a little bit more specific than just the basic concepts she regurgitated to everyone, she wouldn't be able to give me an answer that was actually helpful. It was a month of time and money wasted! I was no where near being able to handle the dogs comfortably. I asked Prentice to help me get my dogs to heel on either side of me and not pull me everywhere on walks. Within two weeks we were already seeing HUGE changes in our dogs. The first day of training my dogs dragged me into the training room and I had no control over them, especially when they saw the other dogs. But after two weeks, I could already walk in the room with the dogs next to me or behind me without dragging me in. At home things started to get better too. I can put my dogs in down, stay while I did chores or work and they actually patiently waited until I came back to release them!!! They also stopped chewing on our baseboards and stopped dragging our stuff around to get attention. Now it's been two and a half months and our dogs are completely transformed!!! They are so attentive and obedient. I took them to a dinner party at my in-laws a week ago and I put them in down and stay right next to me by the dinner table and they stayed quietly by my side the whole time!!! Didn't try to get at the food on the table or bother any of the guests. Everyone was so amazed! Even I was impressed!!! I'm also able to take them out for walks together now and they doing pull and go crazy with every person and every squirrel anymore. I'm so glad Prentice taught me how to communicate with my dogs. I also noticed that my dogs are happier and less anxious because they now can understand what I expect from them. It takes time and patience but it really feels AMAZING to be able to be so in sync with my dogs and be able to handle them comfortably no matter the situation!!! Thank you Prentice!!!! First off, the company closed down in March of 2016, promising their clients that they would re-open in a month or so. Mind you, everyone paid for life-time training, and there were plenty of new-comers who only got a few months of training for their money. A LOT of money. There has been absolutely no communication from the owner to update us as to what is happening. There are plenty of comments on their public facebook page, but they either get no response, or a simple "we will reopen soon". Yea. Okay. I am absolutely shocked to see that the company is somehow operating with a new owner and they are getting new, positive reviews on here. Where the heck are they training and why does no one know about this ?! The only thing that would make sense is that they are dumping their old clients and starting off fresh, without telling us. The showcase of absolutely unprofessional behavior has left a lot of people pretty upset. We are working with Prentice for about 3 weeks in reversing some bad behavior our German shepherd Max had from previous owners and he is AMAZING. At the same time training the wanted obedience, we can't praise Prentice enough. Max also goes to day care there and Prentice worked with Max to socialize with other dogs. We started training with prentice when my puppy was 6 months and he was very unreliable. We would schedule for a day which he confirmed and MULTIPLE times he cancel on us very last minute and he would use the excuse of his car breaking down every time. He always showed up late like about 30mis-2hours late to our classes. Many times he didn't even let us know until we had to call him ourselves and sometimes wouldn't even answer or text back while we were waiting for him to show up to our in home training class. The last time we saw him he said it himself that we had 3 classes left and we went out of town for a family emergency and wanted to reschedule after we came back. When he tried to schedule for the 3 classes left never responded to any of our multiple calls, texts, nothing. We had to pay him full the first day of classes and I'm very disappointed he took the money without finishing our training class. We had a horrible and frustrating experience with this company and wish we could have gotten our puppy the training he had promised. read more

Then on December 5, 2018, we ran across Chicago Canine Company, on the internet, I read a lot of the reviews and decided to give them a call. A gentleman by the name of Prentice Kidd answered the phone. We asked him about his business and his dog training expertise. And he took his time and politely answered all of our questions, We explained to him We have a 2 year 6 month old. Male Doberman, (Zeus) and a 7 month old European female Doberman (Journey) we explained to him we wanted protection training for Zeus, so he explained to us what it takes to achieve the desired level of a fully trained protection guard dog. and asked us to bring our dog in so he can evaluate him, and see what it will take to get him to be a Protection Guard dog. So we was really impressed with the phone conversation, so we decided to take our Big boy in for his evaluation. so the next day December 6 2018. we went in and to our surprise it was a well organized, and clean and decent business. he showed us around and sit us down and explained everything to us. he made us feel very comfortable. he evaluated our dog and brought other dogs and puppy's out to let us see his work. and the dogs performed perfectly. and they were happy and eager while they were doing it. no shock collars, no force to make the dogs obey, and no hollering, at the dogs. we were really impressed. we stayed there about 3 and a half hours. He insisted that during the training he would encourage us to come in and be a part of the training, so we will see and know how our dog is being treated and trained, and we can also learn ourselves the correct commands. and he would show us the correct method to train my female Journey myself. Now you all know there is an old saying, (Knowledge is to be sold not told.) So me and my wife decided that this is the man who we want to train our dog. So Mr Prentice explained to us what my dog needed and we decided to go with the Board and train because my dog has to tighten up on his obedience in order to perfect his protection training. So after all that's been said we enrolled our dog in class on December 7, 2018 and its been about 9 days now. Ive been attending the classes with him and we are really glad so far with his technique and the decision we made to go with this company. now like I said its been only 9 days. During this time he has shared some things for me to work on with my puppy and she has really improved in these 9 days to, we found out one important thing so far. It's a right way and a wrong way to train a dog, so If you want to know how this training and our experience turns out, we are going to continue to keep you all updated. Let me tell you a little about my dog his name is Zeus he weights about 110Lb. I birth him myself and like most pet owners he is spoiled like a baby. he's well mannered at home. but that's all, he never been around other dogs or other people only at home and to the parks no social skills. so if i may say so myself Mr Prentice got his hand full. I trained him the best I knew how, and I though I did a good job until I saw Mr Prentice dogs worked it really blew our minds, but now its time for the Professional's to take over, So if you are looking for a dog trainer keep up with my review and believe me were going to give you the real deal. we are not getting paid for this review nor did we have any knowledge, of The canine company in any way. Dino is an extremely big dog, and I used to feel as if he was dragging me on walks, I had no control. Now, he is so obedient that even if there is another dog he does not move without command. This is the most horrible, unprofessional, dirty, and the worst possible place to bring your dog. As a first time German Shepard owner I was looking for the best training there is. I found prentice Kidd and went for an in person evaluation with my dog. Where he talked about his phenomal training my dog would be receiving. But it ended in failure. He promised to help train my dog with me everyday for an hour. The first few days went very well but after the second week or so he would be late or not ever show up. One time I even pulled up as he was leaving to go get coffee when it was already time for our training. He didn't show up until 30 min later. In almost two months of training all my dog learned was sit stand down and heel. And also in one occasion my dog was not listening well and he told me not to feed me for the rest of the day the time was 10 am. So the next day I show up for training with my dog starving and he was no where to be found. Typical. Also all he does at work when he is with you is hit up females and try to holla. When he should be focusing on my dogs training not some ass. Prentice is a joke and I recommend that no one ever sets foot into this place. read more

I've been taking my now 8 month old GSD here since he was about 4 months old. I was interested in nosework and obedience. Johnathan recommended we start with nosework training, and it was a blast! Johnathan is extremely knowledgeable on the subject and after 10 classes I have a dog that will alert on his trained scents already. I started in off-leash obedience with Derrick a few months ago. My dog went from an pretty dominant and wild puppy to now an absolute gem! Any bad behaviors he was starting have been stopped completely and he listens to me wonderfully both on and off leash. I can take him in to any situation and know he will behave and can be trusted, which is amazing for 8 months! Some of the things he does: sit/stay, come, heel, place, lay down, sit on recall....and the best part is after his initial stint of private obedience lessons he now gets to participate in lifetime group classes twice a week. That alone is worth it! He gets to keep his already learned skills up, as well as work on more advanced ones with the added bonus of practicing around other dogs and distractions. Johnathan and Derrick are both great trainers and people. You can tell they really love what they do and are wonderful with the dogs. They are always willing to answer any questions, and the rest of the staff is wonderful and welcoming as well. The facility is clean and well kept. We have had the best experience with our trainer, Prentice Kidd. We have a standard Schnauzer, Frank, that was in need of obedience training. Prentice has worked with us, as owners, to understand the fundamentals behind our dog's behavior. This is truly his passion and you can tell he isn't in it for the money. He goes above and beyond (calling to check on Frank, providing food recommendations, etc). Frank's behavior has significantly improved and we are excited for what will come next. Took my pup in for an assessment and knew from just speaking to Jonathan that he has a true passion and loves working with dogs. I signed up for the personal sessions and saw major improvements in my pup from day 1. So now after 5 classes not only has my dog learned a ton, I have also learned to appreciate the training methods used by Jonathan and have applied them every single day. On top of that, if you sign up for the private sessions, you get lifetime group classes twice a week at no charge. With this place being an hr away, I have no problem with the drive as I know I'm getting a great trainer and someone who is very well respected among other trainers. read more

PLEASE READ!!! After almost one year of training with Prentice my dog turned on us. Prentice put a great deal of stress on the dog which pushed him to his boiling point, in which case he attacked my wife. Between not feeding regularly and caging the dog for multiple hours, only allowing the dog to drink from a squirt bottle "per Prentice's so called expert training" the dog never enjoyed life with us nor did he trust us. At one point when the dog was starting to get aggressive Prentice suggested not feeding him for one whole week, and those were his exact words, stating that it is going to get ugly before it gets pretty. After having such a bad experience with Prentice I reached out to actual dog clubs to see what there approach to training is and I also discussed CCC's training method and multiple people stated that is abuse!!! Not feeding the dog to the point where you could see all of its ribs is Abuse!! Also they are big on contracts here, worst mistake I ever did, first off $10,500 is way too much for an IPO1, to be honest people are laughing at me for spending that much, IT IS A RIP OFF!!!! Second, if something happens with the dog he will not refund you, for instance in my case the dog attacked my wife, now I am out $10,500. Prentice is a novice trainer that experimented with my dog and it failed. After this event, Prentice attempted to swap my dog with another customers dog that he was training, "Kilo", stating that it would be easier for me to train kilo and he would take my dog. I could not believe what he offered me, a dog that was not even his. Instead of him offering me another customers dog he should have offered me a refund for the abusive training that I paid $10,500. Prentice will blame everyone else for my families accident, stating, "man that dog is crazy or stating that I don't know what that lady is breeding." It is not the pedigree, the dogs this lady produces are phenomenal family loving dogs. Prentice ruined our experience with our dog, all he cares about is when he is getting paid. With this place it is all about the money. Please think twice before signing a contract here, beyond over priced!!! IF I COULD GIVE THIS PLACE ZERO STARTS I WOULD!!!!! The only way this place trains a dog is if it is starving not to mention making the dog drink water through a squirt bottle!! At one point the dog was having horrible stomach problems and the vest asked his feeding schedule, we told him and why we were doing this and he asked if we were trying to KILL THE DOG? The vet stated all puppies need a balanced diet. ALSO HE STATES IN A VIDEO RECENTLY FIRST GERMAN SHEPHERD HE TITLED, that is a lie he tried and failed on my German Shepherd!! PEOPLE PLEASE TAKE THIS REVIEW INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN LOOKING FOR A TRAINER, PERHAPS GET A SECOND OPINION!!! Prentice spent a lot of time with us showing the facility and give us great advice on basic puppy care. Prentice is the dog-whisperer! We started taking our puppy there a few months ago and I couldn't be happier. Prentice doesn't beat around the bush and will tell you what you need to do - I learned quickly that it's really me who needs the training ;-) His scheduling is flexible and his pricing is very fair for the service you'll get. I love the fact that I get one-on-one training as well as training alongside other dogs, it helps me learn how to control different situations. The other bonus is that Chicago Canine Company offers doggy day-care as well as boarding. For a while our dog seemed aggressive towards other dogs and Prentice suggested leaving him at the doggy day-care. He did a great job getting our pup used to the other dogs and it helped tremendously. Our dog gets super excited when he sees the place and can't wait to get in there. To sum it up, a great place for people who really want to train their dog - it'll require time, but if you're willing to work on it Prentice can get your dog to the level of obedience you're looking for. He's all about positive reinforcement (no shock collars or stuff like that), which I love. I highly recommend Prentice - go for a trial training and check it out. read more

My dog, Ivy, and I have been training with Prentice for about a month now. Please note: I said... Ivy AND I ... I have received just as much training as my dog has. Realizing the mistakes / miscues / incorrect body language I was giving my dog and then correcting it has made a world of difference. It's not always the dog, and in this case, the majority of it was changing MY behavior and my expectations of my dog. Sure, Ivy needed to change her ways too, but I needed to change mine as well. That being said, Prentice has not ever been rude nor intimidating when it comes to pointing out what I am doing wrong. It has always been in a constructive way that allows me to realize, correct, and move on. Another thing I love about his program is he trains where we were having issues. I don't pack up Ivy into a car and drive to a facility to train her - he comes to us. We were having problems in MY house and on the streets where I walk her. He takes us into the exact situations where we were having problems and helps us fix them there. While training in a facility can work, we needed to fix the issues I was having at home first and foremost. So who was Ivy before Prentice? Well... she was a sweet, sweet dog who.... ran my house. Here are some of the things that we have been working on and corrected... -First and foremost - crate aggression. And, I mean... BAD. It was literally to the point where, for my safety, I was using pliers to pull the locks across and pushing my shoe firmly against the door as Ivy barked, growled, and tried to push open the gate. This has since ceased (YAHOO!). I now say the word "Kennel" and she makes her way into her crate and I close the door and pull over the locks... no tools required. And she's quiet - she doesn't bark, growl or charge the gate. I have before and after videos of this and so does Prentice should anyone not believe just now bad her crate aggression was and how much better she is now. Ask one of us to see them. -Ivy would take ME for walks.. oh and... Lord help me if there was a bunny, dog, person, or fly... I was toast. She has gotten WORLDS better. Yes, we are still correcting small things but taking Ivy on a walk is no longer a stressful situation nor induces shoulder/arm/back pain (ha!). I am able to now walk her with a loose leash and we can pass people and dogs. There are a few times Ivy tries to pull when she sees dogs but it is quickly and efficiently corrected and we move on. This is a work in progress but we are 90% better than we were a month ago and that is saying a lot. Walks are enjoyable now for both Ivy and I. -Ivy would sit.... but when she wanted to and how long she wanted to. She thought she did her duty once her butt hit the ground and that was it. Ivy is now sitting or being down and I can walk away and she stays until I come back to her, call her to me, or release her. She even now stays down when a temptation is close. She is on a down for 3 minutes or more while her food bowl sits placed on the floor near her while it hydrates (she feeds dehydrated food and the dry food has to sit in water for 3 minutes before eating). -We are a work in progress with healing. Getting healing down pat takes a long time but she is making great strides towards this. It is a step by step process that Prentice has broken down for us and adjusted to work for me and my dog. Ivy is a work in progress and probably will be for a long time. Think about yourself, you always strive to be a little better each day and thats how you have to think when it comes to your dog too. What helps me is that I know I have Prentice to help guide both Ivy and I to keep becoming better. He is not done with Ivy. He promised me day one that he was the last trainer I will ever need and he is living up to this. I know he is not going anywhere - he is still training with us and constantly checking up on us on days we don't train. I could go on and on, but by this point I either have bored you with bragging about how awesome my dog is or you already picked up the phone to call Prentice. I hope it is the latter, you won't regret it. read more

I'm writing this for many different reasons! Let me start off by saying, I'm from the state of Rhode Island and Prentice is in Chicago. I contacted Prentice to see if he could help me with my dog. He answered me back right away! Told me to send him videos, I did, he said call me and gave me his number. (He didn't have to do either). So I did and through videos and talking to him on the phone, i can honestly say my dog is starting to figure out what I'm trying to communicate to him. I owe that all to Prentice. He answers all my questions in detail. I can go on and on. I just want to point out that he doesn't have to do this! Again, I live in another STATE! But he is helping me every step of the way. In my opinion he truly cares about dogs and wants to see them succeed. If you need help I strongly recommend calling Chicago Canine Company!
