Every time I come here I am almost always approached by staff if I need any help or have any questions; that's great customer service imo. They're all very friendly and have yet to come across one that gave me a bad taste in my mouth. I have also got my dog groomed here twice and the first time wasn't too bad since it was a trim and he looked great. But the second time around, they really didn't pay any attention to detail when I had requested it so he came out looking as if he had one strand of hair cut on his body .. Don't get me wrong the grooming staff are really friendly but when it comes to grooming my pup they just don't bother to care. I honestly wont be coming back to petco period for grooming since it seems like they're trying to overcharge you on something simple as a trim and not a full body cut. They're prices are outrageous for the littlest things because everything comes in a package and sadly you can't modify them. This will be my home Petco, but not for grooming. read more

It's honestly the little things that make such an impact. Richard was SO kind today. We came in wanting a Padres jersey for our corgi. We couldn't find anything on the floor, so Richard kindly offered to to order it for us. We sat there for 30 minutes trying to order it through the IPad system. Every time the system kicked him out, Richard would patiently type in ALL our information again. He never grew impatient or frustrated after several failed attempt. We ended up calling their corporate number and Richard was able to successfully place our order via phone. We loved our experience here and we look forward to coming back again. read more

"Expert" at Petco sold me what she told me was a comparable brand to the cat food I've been feeding my baby for four years (she is a nine year old cat with no health or dietary issues). Salesperson told me that Petco no longer carried my brand. I told her that it was important that the dry food be flat for her to be able to chew it up. She assured me it was. It's not. She has puked it up three times since I bought the "comparable" brand three weeks ago. Going to vet to ask for opinion on best brand to buy for Mush Mush. Bye bye Petco. read more

Brought our toy poodle to Vetco for a rabies shot in April/May. A couple of days after he got the shot the fur on the spot of the injection got super dark and within a few days all fell out. He has a complete bald spot at the site of the injection to this day. I went to the store and nicely explained what happened to a woman at the very front of the store. She recommended I go to the Vetco section and see what guidance they could give me. I waited about ten minutes and when I got to the girl at the front "desk" I explained the situation and she looked at flatly and said "We are a vaccination clinic, you need to go to your vet." I asked if there was any guidance or recommendations that could be made because it happened from a vaccine they gave. She looked at me as if I am an idiot and, again, said we are a vaccination clinic you have to go to your vet. A complete lack of sympathy, a complete lack of any apology for this happening because of something on their end. I just got shoo'd away and told to bring the problem somewhere else. Be careful going here for vaccines. read more

Worst experience ever! Been coming to Petco/Vetco for years happily until today. Came in today for a rabies booster. Thought it was good news there was only 2 dogs ahead of us. WRONG! One hour and 20 minutes later we are still waiting. Veto assistant Sabina is completely incompetent and unable to work in any sort of customer service role. I'm here to review Vetco at Petco. The Veterinarian and assistants where very friendly and extremely helpful. Not only with what is best for my dog, but helping with keeping my pup calm when giving him his shots. They were helpful with future appointments, and recommending me an affordable vet to go to besides them. I will definitely be bringing my dog back to them for shots and services they provide, and for that matter, I have an appointment on the 17th of December! Took my two aussies for grooming and trimming their butt/arm/paw hair. When I picked them up I was given the bill and asked to go pay it before I saw the dogs. I paid and then picked up the pups and was told that one of them would not let them trim her nails. I wasn't that worried and took the dogs to leave. When getting them in the car I realized that one was was not trimmed at all and still had "mop feet" and a massive knot behind her ear. Basically all that was done was a bath. I took her back in to show them that nothing was really done and ask for a refund. A lady in street clothes that seemed to be an employee with the cats proceeded to give me dirty looks and not look me in the eye as she was giving directions to the cashier on how to handle my refund. The whole experience was not pleasant and I will not be returning to this location. read more

The staff is amazing. Due to coronavirus & stores having different hours I showed up at 5:57 one evening not realizing they were closing at 6pm. My late arrival did not matter because they still allowed me to rush in & get cat food. Most places would turn me away but the staff were so accomodating. I felt horrible & said I would come back & they wouldnt hear of it & told me to take my time On 7/12/20 I came here for vaccinations for my dog. My girl had handed me a belt bag to hold onto and at some point I must have put it down. Fast forward a few days later my girl was asking what I did with it and I could not recall and therefore we thought we lost it. We had gone on a Sunday drive through Rancho Santa Fe & Del Mar so we started trying to trace our steps and even put up signs for the missing bag. Almost a week later my girl thought to call Petco and sure enough they had it. We aren't talking just about any belt bag we're talking about a $1,000 Prada bag. Not only are the customers honest but so are the employees. We were so relieved to find the bag. Cannot thank Petco enough for being so honest & kind. Also for continuing to work amidst the pandemic. read more

i can NEVER get my cat's harness on correctly. like never. it takes me so long and i can never figure it out. but today i woke up determined to take him outside, and i decided to go to petco to figure out how use the damn thing. i got there and asked a guy in his 20s for help with the harness. i was embarrassed and i thought he'd laugh because really they are simple. but he was so sweet and helpful! he untwisted it for me and showed me the correct way to put it on. i was grateful because like i said i was a little embarrassed. petco, of course, is a big corporate pet store, but it's way better than petsmart--at least petco has holistic cat food! minus one star for selling pets, although they do have "consider adoption first" signs at the registers. read more

For a PetCo, especially in the area of Del Mar that it is, I would have expected more. The store was quite small with very little selection. In addition, the lay out of the store is confusing and doesn't make sense. Also, if you want some help, you really can't find it. We came here for some dog accessories as it was on our way home but found very little to choose from. The fact that I can take my dog to Petco makes shopping here a fun experience for both of us. This location is easily accessible from I-5 off Via De La Valle. There are generous sales on food and toys for our dog that we often take advantage of. Our beagle went to puppy training here more than a year ago. I appreciate that the trainer still knows his name and has fun interacting with him when we come into the store. The store also does a good job of having holiday themed promotions and activities for pets throughout the year. We had a great time at last year's Halloween costume contest. read more

I take my crazy bulldog here to get his nails trimmed. He's definitely a hand full for anybody. There is a really sweet girl that works in the grooming dept. long dark hair in a ponytail & very personable. I feel bad I don't know her name but the last couple times I went she was so sweet to my crazy, loud snorting, monster man doggy. She's super gentle with him & does a great job. this is where i get my baby groomed. shelties are hairy little fellas, but the groomers at petco do a good job of washing winko down, giving him a nice trim, and then brushing him out so he looks like a prince--my little prince :). they charge $40 for winko, but for shorter haired breeds, i'd imagine it's much less. the rest of the store is typical large petstore stuff, and we also got a good deal on winko's bed here too. read more

While I generally shop for my pet goods at a local chain, this particular Petco has always been reliable for those items that the boutique pet shops scoff at. Squeeze peanut butter for the Kong? This is your place. They always have really reasonably priced toys so I can keep my pooch in a steady supply of fiber fill guts. The employees are always friendly and while I haven't used any of their services (training, grooming) everything seems reasonably priced. They do also have a nice assortment of inexpensive baked treats for dogs, which was a pleasant surprise. read more

They don't seem to carry anything over the top, like cute little pet clothes, decked out pet cabins with a covered patio, or puppy strollers. I brought my friendly German Shepherd female in for "Bath Long Hair MD / Deshedding Service XS/Small/Medium". I came back after two hours and was send back because "she did not let them use the dryer". When I picked her up later, I realized that other than bathing not much more was done. I got the impression that the groomer did not have much experience with big dogs, she did not greet my dog or petted her. read more

I have brought my puppy here twice for grooming, both times the hair cuts were a little choppy and there were parts of my dog that were not trimmed evenly. However, she came home with no cuts or trauma, so I can't complain too much. I just wish that for the price they charge that they would paid closer attention when they are grooming dogs so that the hair cuts come out even. read more

Love the store staff is great! My concern is the German Shepard rescue they need to control their dogs one charged at my dog another customer picked my dog up and got him out of the way. No apology offered by this rescue group just a request to stay away from them hard to do when they are posted right outside the front door. read more

I want to start this off by saying this is a review of the grooming department. The customer service associates out on the floor get 5 stars! I called to make an appt to get my dog's haircut and was told that in order to cut the dog's hair, they would need to give it a bath as well. I didn't want to, but since it was the only way they would cut her hair, I said fine ok. We took our dog in for the appointment at 10:30am. They told us it would be about 3 hours - seemed like a long time to give a dog a bath and shave it, but whatever. When we returned at 1:30, we were told umm no your dog's not ready yet, she didn't really like the bath (DUH - if it was so easy, I would have done it) and she REALLY didn't like the blow dryer so she actually wouldn't be ready until 3:30. I responded that it seemed weird that they needed 5 hours to groom my dog when I had an appointment - the girl sitting at the desk (I think her name was Liz?) said it wasn't her fault b/c no one told her my dog was there. um...ok? Pull it together! We had to be at a birthday party at 2 so we drove all the way to east Clairemont Mesa and as soon as we arrived, Petco called and said the dog wouldn't stay still, and we would have to come pick her up b/c they couldn't give her a hair cut. IT TOOK YOU 5 HOURS TO TELL ME YOU CAN'T DO THIS?? I just wasted my entire Saturday. We showed up to pick the dog up and they tried to charge us for the bath. No apology for the amount of time it took or that they couldn't do it. Hello lady we didn't want the bath in the first place, just a stinkin haircut! Luckily the manager up front (Jessica maybe?) was great and didn't even hesitate to refund our money. I definitely will not be bringing our dog back - this was an awful experience. read more

Honestly the worst groomer I have ever been to. The staff was friendly, but I'm not so sure about their qualifications. I have a Collie, so she requires a little bit of work. I have been to other Petco locations and have received great service and a beautiful looking dog. Not only did it take triple the time that they told me it would ( I dropped her off at 11:30 and didn't get her back till 5), she looked butchered. Patches of hair simply chopped out and I hadn't even gotten all the services I requested! Furminator was definitely NOT done. My dog deserves better. read more

The 3 times that we were in there, we were ignored and talked down to like we were idiots. My fiance went in to get a specific kind of collar for our dog, he walked over to a register where there were 4 attendants standing around talking. When he asked for help, one just turned and stated that they would help him when they were done. My fiance just figured that they were talking about business, but when listened closer they were talking about the Padres latest game. He waited around for several minutes until 2 of the workers strolled right by him and went to the office where they got their things and left. Someone retrieving carts ended up helping him. I was in there with my dog asking a question regarding one of their products and she talked to me like I was an idiot and she had better things to do. I rarely write reviews but wanted to say how pleasantly surprised I was to attend the dog Training classes at the Del Mar Petco on Via De La Valle. My dog and I have been working with Luis and he really has been a fabulous coach. I have had many dogs and have always done training classes and really like Luis's manner and positive approach. He made a real effort to work with me and find a time that worked for me, but most of all he's just really good at training you in a positive way to train your dog. I would definitely recommend his classes to anyone who is thinking about training. The price is also a win win. Many other places I have gone for training have been far more expensive. read more

I took my dog here as a puppy. Long story short he was traumatized. The staff here is absolutely rude! They have no patience what so ever. My little Maltipoo puppy (3 months old) nipped at them once and they refused to work with him. I then found out that they were brushing his fur out so badly that is made his skin super sensitive and thats the reason for his nipping. But of course they wouldn't apologize and blames if on my puppy. Also the grooming area is filthy, it smells bad and the cage area is super tiny and claustrophobic. I WILL NEVER take my dog back here again. Not to mention they mark their prices up by a lot! if you want a good groomer with reasonable store wide prices go to Petsmart. I found a groomer names Sarah there off of La Jolla Village Dr. She is amazing. Already recommended her to a few. My dog is super happy never seen him upset again after an appointment. Every time I take my dog here for grooming, the time it takes to get him groomed gets longer and longer. They always say it will be "3 hours" but for me it has ALWAYS taken longer than that. The last grooming appointment took just under 5 hours, which I believe is completely unacceptable. Clearly, they're horrible at scheduling and overbook their appointments. I hate that my dog is probably just sitting in the back waiting there most of the time. Multiple times, they cut him and he spent the next 2 days constantly licking his wounds. I completely understand that this happens but I hate when they don't tell me about it -- I'd rather be told that he got a cut someplace than be told "he did great!" and then come home and be shocked to see that he's bleeding in a couple places. They added on extra fees at the end without telling me which also enraged me. Yes, I'm willing to pay those extra fees but at least give me the option first and explain why it's needed! I don't know why they put a "de-matting" fee this time around, because my dog has never needed one in the past and he definitely wasn't more matted this time around than in the past. I will be finding another place to take my dog for his grooming from now on. read more
