I stopped by this PetCo location today between 11:00 and 11:15 a.m., and had a concerning experience. One of the male employees had a very strong smell of marijuana that was noticeable from several meters away, which made the environment uncomfortable while I was shopping. My main concern is that this is a pet store where employees are responsible for the safety and care of animals. Even the impression that an employee might be impaired can make customers worry about animal safety and professionalism. It also made me want to finish my shopping quickly and leave instead of browsing, which isn't a great customer experience and could discourage people from spending more time--and money--in the store. I hope management takes this seriously and reinforces professional standards so the store remains a safe and comfortable place for pets and customers. read more

Honestly so disappointed in the staff here. I went in EVERY worm in one of the refrigerators were moldly and dead, no a super big deal it happens. There were 4 employees, I assume that worked at the vet clinic. I told them and asked if they happened to have any more worms elsewhere or maybe support with finding alternative food for my pet. Most just looked at me like I was a problem, there was one person that actually took the concern and said they would pass it along. Final straw was I went back grabbed what I needed and went back to the front. All of the assumed vet employees were still there just chatting but no one that actually could ring me out. 1,2,3 minutes go by with no support. I leave my stuff and walk out. We love this Petco store. The staff members are incredibly kind and helpful. We got our pup early this year, just before the first stay-at-home order went into effect for North Carolina. Before COVID, we did a lot of in-store shopping and since March we have transitioned completely to online order/curbside pickup. In-store experience: What we enjoy the most is the excellent customer service. We are first time pet owners and so when we first went into the store, we had a lot of question such as what types of treats might be good for our dog, what type of nail clippers to use and how often to get our dog groomed. We talked to multiple associates over various visits about our questions, and everyone was knowledgeable and happy to go to extra mile in helping us out. Additionally, the store is just fun to walk around. They have a great selection of toys, treats, collars, apparel, etc. They have many different bones/animal parts as chew toys for dogs; we enjoyed taking our dog in and letting him "choose" a bone. The store has most essentials in stock, especially when it comes to food, treats and toys. There are also grooming and training services available, though we have not used either due to COVID restrictions. Additionally, there is a veterinary clinic in-house; we visited them soon after we adopted our dog and were great for a basic visit though we have moved to a different vet now. There are cleaning stations around the store in case your pup has an accident while inside, which makes the experience a lot less stressful for those with young puppies. The last time we went inside the store, they had decent COVID measures enforced, such as social distancing when standing at the checkout line. Online order/curbside pickup: We have loved this option and hope that it will still be available post-COVID. For each of the 4-5 orders that we have placed online, our items have been ready for pickup in less than an hour. Upon arriving at the store, we park in one of the designated spots and call the store phone number. Someone hand delivers our items to our car, even tossing it in the backseat rather than to the driver to further minimize contact. There have been a few items which were listed as available online but haven't actually been available, resulting in a cancelation but thus far it has not been a huge issue for me. In these cases, I re-ordered the items online and received them within a couple of days. We look forward to continuing to shop at this Petco. read more

It was weird...like the guy was friendly but also kind of chastising? He was nicer to my fiancée than he was to me so I at least appreciate that but I don't know...he was kind of giving us a hard time for coming into the store before we had the confirmation email about our online order. Had he listened he would have heard the part about how we were having issues and had to place it twice...anyway... The store is clean and the staff is helpful enough. Prices on food are generally better than at boutique shops but not quite as good as I would like for a big box pet supply conglomerate. Do not shop here unless you want to be treated like a problem! I needed help with a dilemma that I was facing. As I ask one of the the employee she first acts like I should not even bother her. So I proceed to ask my question and she acts like I am stupid by her reaction on her face. Is NO HELP AT ALL! I have taken my dog Justus here since I first rescued him as a puppy, and he just turned 7! For the past 3 years or so we have been seeing Beth for his grooming and she does an absolutely amazing job. Justus hates being groomed and really is not a dog friendly dog, but she takes the most amazing care of him and I never worry about dropping him off for the day! He is part chow, part golden retriever and some other breeds so we have to get him groomed every 3 months or so and each time he looks beautiful and we always get so many compliments! I am truly grateful for being able to trust the staff at Petco, especially Beth, with my sweet baby and knowing he will be in good and caring hands will keep me coming back! Very friendly at their Vetco office, very nice technicians and DVM was very nice!! I'll go back to the VETCO, Vetinary Hospital there. The Grooming Salon, was rude, not interested in helping me the day of my appointment. They saw me standing there at the counter and none of the 5 employees wanted to come to the counter to greet me, they all just looked and did nothing. The one that finally did approach the counter ended up being rude, because I bothered her from visiting with her co-employees. For my pet supplies, I'll continue to go to Oetsmzrt. I dropped my dog off at the Grooming center and my wife picked her up with bloody nails, worse than I've ever seen in my life. The grooming manager stated that the groomer will continue to clip the dogs nails unless it bites. When I called up to complain, the manager puts me on speaker phone as if to mock me by clearly broadcasting my complaint to her coworkers. My dog isn't a biter so she was dealt an unlucky hand from the beginning. Petco's solution was to offer a refund and get my wife out of the store as quickly as possible. We'll be escalating the matter to corporate and the media citing questionable grooming techniques as well as deplorable customer service. If the manager of the grooming center is rude to you as a customer, how can you trust them to take proper care of your animal? We came in on a Memorial Day weekend to find out about dog training classes. Both Tim and Kyles helped us. They were GREAT! They went over in detail, what each class consisted of. It is 6 week course, and they go all the basics. They told us, Petco coupon book, it would give us an extra %10 - making it only $109.00 a bargain! They also told us to sign up for membership, and we would get $40.00 in coupons to spend on anything in the store if we purchase the training classes, which we did. ** And as an added bonus .. they said they would price match anything on internet, like Chewy.com Kyles and Tim could not have been more helpful !! My family doesn't usually buy supplies from a pet store, but as we were buying a betta fish for our daughter, we also stocked up on cat supplies. Pet places like Petco are usually more pricey, but they had the cat food we get as buy one get one 50% off, so we can't complain. The staff greeted us when we entered and they were very helpful when we asked how to care for a fish. When we left the store and looked at our receipt, we saw a 24.99 cat mat we bought was actually priced at 39.99. We went back in to return the mat, and the cashier refunded the difference since the mat was in the wrong spot without any hassle. Milo needed some new dog food, so I decided to see what Petco had to offer. They seem to have lots of sales online & in-store, so I wanted to check them out. They have this brand, Merrick, which Milo loves. And it's reasonably priced. They also carry his favorite Blue Buffalo brand soft treats. They seem to always be on sale, which is great. Employees are friendly & super helpful, especially the ones at checkout. I've had to make some exchanges before & thankfully, they've never given me a hard time. I thought all went well when I picked up my dog but that night into the next day his testies were red and puffy - I ended up taking him to the vet and they said he was cut too low to the skin and that the area was irritated so now he's been on medication and has to wear a cone until it heals up. Poor thing has been absolutely miserable and barely wants to go out to use the bathroom. He's been getting groomed for over a year and we've never had any issues prior to this. read more

We have taken our dog to Petco's in Massachusetts since she was adopted 7+ years ago and in NC recently after moving. There is a backlog and I understand; so she was booked on Sep 9th for Oct 16th at 900am. I received several confirmation correspondences the last being today the morning of Oct 15th at 844am, confirming. FYI all confirmation requests on my end were responded to. I just received a call at 1130am telling me they had to cancel her appointment due to a backlog. When I asked why; they said that is all they could provide. If a groomer left, was sick or was let go, I get it and am sympathetic to the challenges with turnover. If the answer to why was simply we just found out we are short a groomer tomorrow, while disappointed there really isn't anything anyone can do. I guess I have to draw my own conclusion that a family, friend or someone more important needed a rush appt. The one thing that has become exceedingly frustrating is company policies that only go 1 way, Petco's policy is a 24 hour cancellation notice but for the customer the cancellation can occur at any point. Companies have high demand now for this service but customers adapt. Relationships & communication still count for something. I will add that our experience the first time from groomer and checkout person were really fantastic at this store! I feel bad that I don't remember the names as her appointment was not under my phone number and email then. But the girl checking us out after her appt even said please come back in to visit us. We even waited longer to go back to this store because of that. Also wanted to add that another Petco store was more sympathetic and accommodating right after getting this call. Hoping that works out. Petco has been a constant in our dogs life and hoping this remains true. If I hadn't gotten that feeling I would have looked outside of Petco and if that was a nice experience, even at more of a cost and/or longer appointment wait times I would have made the switch. From looking at the other reviews this seems to be more and more the norm at this store and as in most cases usually a Petco Corp management issue. I tried several different places to find the right groomer for my dog. I was so pleased with the groomers at this Petco location we have not gone anywhere else since. The groomers are all incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. Beth took the time to talk with me to help me figure out exactly what type of haircut and look I wanted, and she always double checks with me every time I come in in case anything changes. My dog is always so happy and excited to see her and when he leaves, he smells so clean for quite a while after the bath! Additionally, she's gone above and beyond and has fit us in for a last-minute quick appointment before a snowstorm so I could avoid snow clumps in his hair and even sometimes even surprises me to with cute little seasonal bandannas - or at Christmas antlers - on him when I come to pick him up! During COVID the whole store has done a great job of social distancing both with people and dogs and I feel very safe coming in and bringing my dog to visit Beth. read more

The containers have a sticker on them with the fill line, and each betta's container was less than halfway to the fill line. They were literally living in less than 2 inches of water. DO NOT TAKE YOUR ANIMAL HERE TO BE GROOMED!!!!!!! I took my Golden Retriever Jake here a couple of years ago to be groomed. I dropped him off at 4pm and was told I could pick him up at 8pm. When I arrived at 7:30pm, the lights were out and no one was in the groomers office. I went looking for a Manager who informed me they were closed. I informed him that my dog was still in there and I wanted him back. I was told I would have to wait a few minutes. I don't take kindly to waiting when I was visibly upset. I was told the groomers office was open until 9pm and was not expecting this scenario. I waited 2 minutes before going back into the office myself. I walked to the back where they keep the dogs in cages only to find my poor 85 pound dog hunkered down in a cage clearly half his size. I was sooooo very upset, the Manager was no help and didn't seem to care. I walked out with my Jake and have NEVER been back. I took my dog to get groomed here for the first time. My dog is old and he hadn't had a haircut in a while. His fur was pretty matted. Since he's a spaniel I asked that they keep his legs longer and the rest short. He also usually sports a Mohawk and so I also requested that. I left him there for the four hours they told me it would take. Once I made it home I got a phone call letting me know that because his fur was so matted they were going to have to shave his legs. It was nice that they let me know. When I finally picked him up he didn't look like the same dog. No fur=skinny. They did a great job with him though. They even gave him his Mohawk. As for the store itself I am always able to find what I need. They have a good selection of dog products. I really like looking at all the different animals they have. Only reviewing the store, we don't use professional grooming for our pets. We went here last week to buy a new cat tree and some other essentials. Good prices, very attentive, friendly and helpful staff. Product selection is great, although I was surprised to not find any Frontline products for tick-flee control but that was the only item I missed and the substitutes ended up nicer priced anyway. I'd give this store 5 stars if it wasn't for the fish on display near the entrance, they were held up in very small individual containers that I must assume where meant for marketing / quick sell purposes but it only looked sad that they had to live on such small space. read more

I just recently moved to Durham and this Petco is right by my work. My adorable baby pitbull and I frequent this location and I have to say I really enjoy coming here, especially in the mornings! The staff I have encountered here in the early am right when they open have always been EXTREMELY friendly, and most importantly, super knowledgeable, which is helpful when you have a dog who can chew through the toughest toys in 5 minutes or less and has separation anxiety! I cannot recommend this location enough. They have a great selection of dog food, especially grain free which is what my pitbull has to eat, as well as a great selection of everything else you might need. read more

I've had a few issues with them running out of Wellness Core when I need it (even when it's not on sale).
