I like the "Petco" store, except for one particular thing which I will get to in a moment. I have taken my male Siberian Husky (named "Skye") to this store for the Sunday pet clinic where he was given his full set of shots and he had a microchip inserted beneath his skin for future identification if/as needed. Skye has also been there more than once for their basic dog grooming service. However the "one particular thing" that bothers me about this store is their checkout service. The store has about 3 cash registers available to use for checkout, but 99% of the time there is only one checkout lane open with a line of 6-10 people waiting to pay for their goods. I did mention to the single cash register operator (one time when checking out) that the store should open another 1 or 2 registers to reduce the waiting period. The person responded saying that they would do that if they had a sufficient number of store employees available to operate even one more cash register checkout lane. I understand that a number of businesses have had to reduce their hours, or close entirely for a day, because they could not find a sufficient number of people willing to work at that business. However, when one has to stand in line for (what seems like) 10-15 minutes to pay for a single dog chew toy, it still is very bothersome (at least to me). There is another "pet store" in town that goes by the name of "Cold Spot Feeds, Inc." (locally known just as "Cold Spot"). On more than one occasion, when shopping for my Husky, I have thought about that long wait in the checkout line at the "Petco" store, and then decided to do my shopping at "Cold Spot." The "Cold Spot" store has a single, but very efficient and large, "Checkout Desk" (or "Checkout Kiosk") with multiple people waiting to answer customer questions, assist customers with advice or with finding in-store products, and, also, to quickly checkout each customer. I find that, even if an item costs a bit more at "Cold Spot," I am willing to pay that "extra amount" in order to shop at a store that provides me with an efficient (and quick) checkout experience. read more

Terrible store. They had a small aquarium on the shelf with no price on it. It was sitting next to a slightly larger tank that was priced at $34. I looked the priced tank up on the petco website, and it also said $34. Took it up front and it rang up as as $75. The cashier went to get the manager, and he immediately said "we cant price match glass." I said, "I want looking for a price match, its just that it rang up as twice the price...." (before I could finish my sentence and say "I just want to make sure the price is correct") he cut me off and said "your more than welcome to order it online then!" (Which i did, off Amazon). This terrible store hasn't even had working bathrooms in over a year in violation of AS 18.35.200. Alaskans deserve better. read more

Our new cats toy got destroyed, so we checked online and it said this store had them. Went there and toy isle was a mess and there was none of these special toys. Guy working there stated it was a computer error, but they had just gotten freight and it might be in there. He was nice about it but was full of it. Just blowing smoke up my butt. Store was trashed, maybe they need to get a night crew or more people. We usually go local owned stores but they don't carry this toy. So much for everything on the internet to be true! read more

absolutely horrible service, people are never available to help pick out fish. We even tried bringing our dog there to get him groomed three times, and each time they made up lousy excuses not to. Employees are arrogant and don't care about the health of the animals at all. There's always several dead fish in their tanks, not to mention that there are always several dead and dying bettas on display. When notified of the state of these fish, employees reluctantly check on them, then confidently declare they're "doing fine." It's horrific. The woman who groomed my dog failed to rinse all of the shampoo out of my dog's eyes and now he has an ulcerated right cornea and is going to lose his sight in that eye. Not to impressed with this store or their Fish department. While looking at the salt water fish over the weekend I noticed that there were a lot of dead fish in almost every tank. One of their most expensive fish, the Yellow tailed Blue Tang was dead at the bottom of the tank for a while. This should be unacceptable for a pet store. They have Humuhumunukunukuapua'a in such a small tank no wonder why they die. And the bad think is they probably don't even know what fish I am even talking about! read more

I went to this pet store to browse the small animals in the hope of taking one home. When I found the little guy I was interested in, it took me a very long time to find someone to help me! They were either understaffed or not very vigilant. I ended up having to approach someone and ask them to call over the intercom for an associate to help me. Once he got there he was very helpful in recommending accessories and products to me and I appreciated the good customer service. Although my experience with small animals here was alright, I do not recommend that anyone have their dog groomed at branch stores such as PetCo or PetSmart as they do not have high standards for their groomers and they do not train them properly. I'd give no stars if there was a option I've been using petco grooming for years for my 13 yr old Siberian husky. I recently moved to Fairbanks and the service I've received just trying to get my husky and Aussiedoodle puppy in has been terrible. My husky was turned away because the up to date Medical records showing her vaccinations were not acceptable because it did not say "certificate of vaccinations" on the top. Learning from that I made sure to bring a up to date "certificate of vaccinations" for my Aussiedoodle puppy but he was turned away because I gave him some of the CBD treats that I bought from their store that day. I get it if it's their policy, but how about some kind of notification when they do the appointment reminders. It took me a few weeks to get a weekend appointment. I'm so dissatisfied with the poor service I received, if the service is this bad I can't imagine how the quality of their work would be. I would never bring my dogs back there and will be looking for another groomer for my two fur babies. read more

This is a pretty average Petco. We had just moved here and were in desperate need of dust for our chinchilla. (Anyone who knows about chinchillas, knows how important dust is!) We stopped in, only to be told they were out of stock. They offered to order it for us, but were unable to do so because their supplier was also out. They took down our phone number, and said they would check on the status of the dust everyday, and give us a call when it was in. Thankfully, the sweetest employee, and a fellow chinchilla owner, was kind enough to go into the back and get some dust out of the stash they use on the stores chinchillas to tie us over. And boy, am I glad she did! It was just over three weeks before we received the call that the dust was finally in! Although, everything happens for a reason... While waiting for the employees to figure out what was going on with the dust situation, I fell in the love with the sweetest face, and ended up bringing home another chinchilla that day! My sweet baby boy, Queso! I love how it seemed like every employee had a special connection with him, and a fun story to tell! Everyone came up to say goodbye to the little guy, and one employee even got teary eyed! It makes me believe that the animals are loved, and well taken care of! Worst pet store for grooming your dog. We took our dog here and after she hadn't been started for two hours I asked them of they could hurry. They then worked on our dog and the grooming manager asked my wife to tip the groomer for stopping everything. When my wife refused she charged my wife a rush fee and an argument started. The store manager watched the whole thing and did nothing. After I called and complained we got our money back. Every time we took our dog we had trouble. Overall horrible store. I take my dog to the groomers here, and he loves them! They have always done a good job and his claws don't get as dry as they did before I starting bringing him here last winter. There are windows and cameras in the grooming area, so owners worried about how their pets are treated can see for themselves. They don't carry the dog food I buy, so I mostly shop there when I need supplies for my gecko. Sometimes they seem understaffed, but the staff there is always friendly and helpful. read more

Petco is the only pet store in town. It has a good selection and staff are friendly and helpful. It's expensive, but I guess there's no real way to get around that. As a cat owner, I'm grateful that they are the only place in town that carries Science Diet and flushable litter -- the grocery stores around here don't. read more

The Fairbanks Petco is the BEST Petco I've ever been to! The manager and staff GENUINELY care about animals and their owners and constantly go out of their way to make their customers happy and taken care of! And their grooming staff do the best job on my two Giant Alaskan Malamutes than anybody has ever done! They treat my babies like they are their own, and they are the only ones that get all the stubborn undercoat off! I know what a tedious job that is, and they patiently don't stop until it's done right and my boys are looking like dogs ready for the "Westminster Dog Show"! 75% of the times that I went here, they were out of stock of the Nutro Puppy food I needed (not an obscure brand or anything). I think they need to work on their ordering to keep high-demand items in stock. Besides that, staff was always friendly. Proceed carefully if you plan to get your pet groomed here. Be very choosy, as the talent and character of each groomer varies widely. Up until now, I've had excellent service and rapport with the groomers I've used, but as of this review there is at least one dud -- a rigid, argumentative, controlling woman that I would not let clean my kennel let alone touch my pets. Interview them and get a sense of their suitability for working with animals - don't just make an appointment and hope for the best, because you, like me, could get the worst. National chains are not the most discriminating employers. read more

First time dropping our Whippet mix off for grooming there and extremely pleased!! Her coat looked and smelled amazing, her ears were cleaned and her nails look the best they have in years! This store is average. Been to others that were definitely a little cleaner. Twice when we were there, dogs are crapping on the floor and the owners are standing around wondering what to do. This is unsanitary I don't care if this is where you can bring your animal. My suggestion is, for those that bring their pets inside the store to shop, there should be poop bags at the ENTRANCE the owners MUST GRAB (if the dog is with them on a leash) with a sign saying pick up your mess. I have been in many Petco stores and this is the only one where this kind of thing is occurring.. Twice I have been here and twice dogs are pooping on the floor. Nasty. Please do something about this.. None of your customers want to deal with that. Accidents happen with dogs.. Be responsible and clean up after your pet!! read more

Store is well stocked and clean. Animals seem well cared for! Employees were kind and informative and their dog trainer Chad is phenomenal!

I haven't been in Petco for a since last fall (it is March now), but used to be a regular there for fish and terrarium products. I walked in the store and there are rugs for the first 10-12 feet into the building and at least 10' wide. They were covered with hair, single hairs, but mostly clumps of hair - I doubt if one square inch of the carpet didn't have hair on it. It was filthy. I went into the store as I wanted to purchase a product but after 5 minutes I had to leave due to my dog/cat allergies. I have never had a reaction in the store before. I had to immediately go home, shower and take something for my reaction - skin itchy and throat swelling. I called the manager and she stated they cleaned the rugs every morning - I would say the carpet hasn't been cleaned in days. Before in this store I never noticed any hair and I check things out closely due to my allergies. I would give it a -5 if I could. Terrible. read more
