This petco is terrible. STEVEN THE ASSISTANT MANAGER is the most miserable excuse for a person I have ever met before. They sold me the wrong fish- I realized it before I even got home. I brought it back and straight to my face he told me "well we're going to have to kill it if you return it" while laughing at me, but I literally could not keep the fish because it would have fought with my other fish.. (clown loach vs. Cory) most of the other people who work here are so stuck up it's not even worth asking any questions. There's also never any parking so it makes it a real chore to go there. The petco on staples mills is A LOT better. I recommend taking the drive to that one instead of this godforsaken place. Also don't ever get roped into the vital care!! They don't tell you up front that you will have to pay for it for a year and you cannot cancel. Biggest waste of money in my opinion, especially since I have to drive all the way to staples mill now. read more

We've never had an issue with stores breaking ADA guidelines, however this one seems to nonstop. Per Virginia law, service dogs with off leash tasks do not need to be leashed in public, unless in a leashed area, in which they need to be controlled by electric recall. The store manager, Jake, came right up to me and my father and (somewhat rudely) demanded his service dog be put on a leash. His tasks require him to be off leash. We explained, and Jake very loudly went "whatever! Do whatever I don't care!" And stormed off. It seems solely Petco has issues with ADA and what not. Very upsetting, considering this was our favorite store previously. I understand being upset but not being willing to just listen to a customer and perhaps actually looking up ADA code is frankly outrageous. We're too far in the future to still be arguing with service dog handlers and removing them from stores for lack of ADA knowledge. read more

Really disturbing to see the condition of the small pets in this store. All the food bowls were empty, and the amount of stool and flies in the ferret tank was really sad. The amount of stool and the fact that flies had developed shows that its been there longer than it should have been... I was here for dog food and a new leash/collar, but I will go to petsmart or just buy online. read more

Honestly don't know where to start, I was at the register waiting in line with only one person ahead. The person at the register, Jan, was the only one working at the time and was checking out a customer. Jan needed assistance from another employee to get at item for that customer. So she called me up to checkout - by the time I got to the register the other person got their item. So I stepped back and let Jan finish checking them out- she accidentally rang up my items with the other customers items. Whatever, it happens- however, Jan was getting irritated! I stepped up after and Jan began to ring up my items after. I put my phone number in, and noticed my discount wasn't being applied, so I asked her what the issue was. She said I have several accounts and next time I should call Petco before coming in to avoid holding up the line. Mind you, I never held up the line, Jan was flustered from the beginning. I didn't say anything to her as I found her judging me from the start. My daughter noticed her huffing and puffing after we paid and walked out. All I want to say is, as a customer, please treat everyone equally and there is no reason to have an attitude. I don't know what Jan was upset about, but it was not necessary to take it out on us, a paying customer. Fyi, I was in a couple days ago and had no issues with my petco account- odd how this time it was an issue!! read more

Found a XL dog crate online and it stated that it is available for pick up at the Henrico location. I went in to purchase and there was one on the shelf without a box, i figured it was the one door I was looking for. I asked an employee for help "Jake" and all he could tell me was "I don't know". I went back and checked and just decided to pay for the two door XL crate. I asked him again if the one out of the box was the one door crate and he was like "I don't know" AGAIN. Now I am thinking "what do you know"? Didn't even bother to go back and help me. I was on my way to check out and the box was heavy, the employees watched me drag the box to the front and out the store and didn't even bother to help me. Worst customer service, lazy employees! I have been using the Grooming Salon for several years now, and they have had Excellent Groomers and some NOT so Excellent. When I say, Excellent... I mean groomers who listen to you on how you want your dog's hair to be cut as appose to the way she thinks it should be cut. Well, I found this person who does JUST that! Her name is Tamera. She has been working with the Petco Groomers now for a couple of years, so last year I decided to see how she does on my dog. I have a Maltese and of course I am into Maintenance Free with him as I JUST do not have the patience to brush his hair everyday for that long silky look. So, what do I do... I cut it ALL off. In the past, I would tell the Groomer to cut close around his face, and yet she has always cut it her way.... So, when I pick the dog up, it look like it has a Monkey face... However, Tamera is different.... I told her what I wanted and she gave me what I wanted. In fact, she did such a GREAT job on him, I was willing to tip her extra. Last week, she called and wanted to know if I wanted to bring Monte in as she had an opening for the Holidays.... So, I set up a time for the next time.... Several hours later, she called to let me know he was ready.... and AGAIN, she cut him the way I asked. NO questions asked, or doing it her way... She listens to the Customer. She is a VERY Busy Groomer there and I can see why.... Tamera is excellent with your dog and I cannot say enough good things about her Grooming techniques and Customer Care. The Grooming part of Petco has a NEW Manager and she is AIM to please. So, if you need your dog's hair washed and cut... Ask for Tamera... Tell her that TOM sent you.... One of the worst Petco's I've been to. The manager is very friendly and has gone out of his way to help me. Another employee, however, keeps making mistakes that's costing me money. The first time he doesn't give me a receipt and threatens to freeze my account when I wanted to return the item even when I've explained the situation. The second time I try to put an order with them when an item was out of stock and they order MULTIPLE QUANTITIES without my knowledge instead of the single item. I have to wait until I get all of the quantities before I can even make the return! At this point I've lost over $50 on mistakes that simply shouldn't be happening. So disappointed because I prefer petco over petsmart but I might have to take my business elsewhere. read more

First off, let me start by saying I never thought I would pay for dog lessons but I am so glad I did. The trainer, Jan, was simply amazing with our 6 month old puppy, "Blue". She worked with me and my daughter and made sure we both understood the training before moving on to the next skill. Blue is now about 9 months and still loves to see Jan in the store. Jan has a true passion for animals and I've never met anyone more knowledgeable on dog training. As for the value of the program, I didn't even bother looking at other options b/c it was so reasonable and they offered a coupon package that almost paid for 1/3 of the training. I have been going to the short pump Petco for grooming for my Pomeranian. I have never had a issue. Today I had a small miscommunication issue and it was handled to the max with no complications. The management here is really good! The accommodation is excellent. I would recommended bringing your pets here for grooming or other needs. Management and stuff are a 10 in my book. read more

I'll never shop at this horrid location again. I have been as patient and understanding about the struggles this store has endured over the past few years. But I'm done. I will not go another inch for these people. The staff here are so incredibly rude. The management don't seem to care at all that they are even running a business. The store is always a mess. Filthy spots everywhere. On the floors and windows. Animal habitats are disgusting. Lacking any sort of standard of care or basic hygiene. Staff have seem to lost all knowledge pertaining to their business. I don't think I have ever seen a more lazy and disrespectful staff at any store I have ever visited. The managers I dealt with on my multiple visits were Stephen, Chad and Ken. Avoid these people!! They give false and misleading advice about everything from dog food to fish tanks. Then they bad mouth other customers after their terrible interactions on the sales floor, in the aisles. The normal staff members are just as bad. I'm sure following the example set by the "new" managers. Lacking and basic care about anything they do. Seems like they just want to get their paychecks and leave. I used to always love my visits at Petco. But my trips have become a nightmare each and every time. There is no leadership here. No one seems to care at all. It is frankly appalling. Is there no oversight in this building?? This type of store is corporate owned and run by those standards isn't it? Absolutely horrible. This team needs to be fired and the store needs to be reset with a new crew. Otherwise, there is only on thing you can count on when you shop here: Disappointment and disgust. read more

I wish I could have given this all 5 stars. Unfortunately the person who groomed her did not listen to what I requested. I wanted her back legs to br cleaned up and shaved as if she was a short hair dog. All the groomer did was trim up her skirt and underside. We discussed this prior to her trimming and not sure why it was not done. When I get her summer cut they trim the back of the legs nice and tight so I know they know what they are doing. I love petco grooming and never had a bad experience with the bathing and quick trim. The more cutting and styling I ask, the more they tend to mess it up. My fav groomers no longer work there and still hit or miss with the new staff. I might try another location to see if any better. read more

I have never had a bad experience while in the store until today. One of the trainers was working with a couple & their dog. As I am shopping I hear someone loudly yelling at the dog - "why are you pulling?!?? Huh?!?!?" I turn around to realize it is the store TRAINER yelling at the dog. I brush it off and keep shopping. Nearing the checkout I see the trainer repeatedly shoving the dog off of the couple for jumping and yelling more. It doesn't take much to know this is NOT how you train a dog. Even if the training technique wasn't improper - it's super uncomfortable to shop while an employee is YELLING at a dog. People, save your money and send your dog to a certified dog trainer. They are out there and they are much more qualified than anyone you'll find at Petco. read more

I signed up my dog for obedience class with Jan. Belle(my English Setter) and I have been going for about 7 sessions so far. Each session lasts about an hour. Jan is the most knowledgeable trainer I know. She has been a trainer for a long time and works at a Veterinary hospital. She really gets to know your dog. She helps you to understand how to get your dog to listen to you and follow your commands. Jan from the very beginning gave sound advice on food, walking leads and anything else we needed help with. Belle has come a long way because of Jan. We both think very highly of her and strongly recommend her to anyone needing guidance with their dogs. read more

Then i noticed some more breathing heavy in the corner and i was concerned. I didn't want to leave them to die so i bought all four. Still breathing heavy but are doing great and are active. DO NOT GO HERE FOR DOG GROOMING! I took my dog here for a basic grooming, picked him up and realized he had 2 cuts, one on each of his front paws. I spent the rest of the evening waiting at the vet and he needed antibiotics to keep the cuts from getting infected. No one said a word about it to me when I picked him up. Do not use Petco in Short Pump to groom your pet.... after almost 7 hours in a kennel, 2 of which he spent in a "drying" kennel where air blew on him, Gus was "groomed" in the last 20 minutes after I arrived to pick him up. They left him unattended with a noose around his neck on a grooming table and he looks absolutely horrible (did not cut his belly at all... nails so short he has yelped several times while walking). When I complained about the poor service, the groomer blew a hair dryer in my face and showed me her packed schedule because the manager (who was mortified by the groomer) did not make me pay to have my dog abused all day.... I had my dog groomed here twice. The first time he still has stool left on his bottom when I pick him up so they offered me a free grooming. Today I took my dog to get his free bath/ nail trim. That is all I wanted. When I pick him up the girl said I gave him a complimentary eye scoop which is basically a cut around his eyes and nose. WTH. I only wanted him bathed. NO CUT. I went to Petco because there is one coming to Lynchburg and I wanted to see how it stacked up to the pet stores I patronage. I only looked in the fish department and I made 3 circles around looking at fish and other products and I was never asked by any worker how could they help me. Their selection of fish and fish food is nothing to write home about. Their price points on other fish products were comparable to Petsmart. The selection of fish was rather expensive for what they had in my opinion. I will give the one in Lynchburg a walk around but hopefully the customer service will be better. read more

Petsmart had been scheduled to do the groom they canceled wed evening because a groomer was sick Petco put Finesse on their schedule pulled me out of a tight bind Saved me a few hundred dollars on the water shoot and did an AWESOME JOB on Finesse ! Don't go here if you have a pet with allergies. I needed to change my dogs food due to vet concerns with the food she was on, well the dog food I chose at Petco, go figure, she was allergic to it. I had been speaking to my vet and she had told me to give the new food 2-3 weeks to level out, so that's what I did. Needless to say 2-3 weeks didn't matter, she was allergic and that was that, so I attempted to return the food. Having returned food before at Petsmart (i went through this trying procedure once before trying to find food she wasn't allergic to) it has never been an issue not having the bag or the receipt. Let's face it 2-3 weeks go by, you've thrown the bag away because you want it in an airtight food container and I can't remember where the receipt is now. Petsmart looked up my receipt in their system one time and was able to look at purchases with the petsmart card to verify another time (i think i need to start keeping my receipts haha)...I also didn't have the bag, so I brought it to them in my air tight container. Petsmart exchanged it NO problem. Petco on the other hand...they wouldn't do anything, they said they can't look up my receipt, can't look up my petco card purchases, and absolutely will not take it back without the bag. Dog food is expensive and you guys are suppose to help pet owners support the health and well being of their animals...my girl has allergies and you guys were of no help with our issue. Having a dog with allergies issues I need a company willing to work with us, help us out, and most of all be caring and understanding. I will be shopping at Petsmart from here on out and enjoying their caring nature and superb customer service. read more

Petco is usually pretty good with returns especially with an unopened container of cat food but last night really stung. My girl didn't seem to like the salmon flavor of the Whole Earth Farms but she likes the chicken, so I figured a clean exchange, unopened salmon for chicken. Had my two dogs groomed recently and was charged $74 each despite instructions to do a basic groom on one dog. He turned out ok but my other dog is in terrible shape. He is a Bichon Frise and they shaved his head bc he had some matting. He has razor burn and is just miserable. I would have a hard time going back because of this. read more

Being new to pet ownership, this was my first venture to a pet-centric store and it was only after a wine run to Trader Joes that I even thought to wander in. My bf and I have a beautiful kitty named Roxy and we wanted to buy her a toy she could play with when we aren't home, while also deterring her from scratching up the couch during the same time. We wandered the cat section and rummaged through cardboard scratchers and squeaky toys, not really sure what she was going to like. There was a 'star chaser' insert (a cardboard scratcher that fit into a round plastic toy with a ball that could roll around the middle), but no star chaser so we found an associate to help us. Indrea asked her boss, who checked the back but they were out. No star chaser for us. I asked Indrea if she knew anything about cats and she lit up like a firework. She was extremely helpful, suggesting a scratching post made of sisal and rubbing cat nip in it to entice Roxy. She talked knowledgeably of what cats need and made us so happy that we wandered in. Roxy used it as soon as we got home (fist pump!) and hopefully will prefer it over the couch from now on. read more

The staff are always so excited and happy for my doggy to come in and every time I pick him up he looks so handsome! Wonderful ladies working at the grooming salon. I always have a very good experience when none of the store managers are involved or I don't have to talk to them. It was a terrible experience. Unfortunately, I don't remember his name. He is the Store manager. A tall Black male with beard. Very rude, unprofessional, and unfriendly. He kept talking to someone on phone while checking out my items and was totally inconsiderate of my concern of being unable to avail my Pal Rewards for a specific item. My husband and I just finished Adult I Dog Training classes with Jan for our 2 Yorkies and she did an EXCELLENT job! My yorkies were trained to do several commands and even some commands that were more advanced in less than 6 weeks. Keep in mind that one of the yorkies was 8 years old and the other was turning 4 and neither one of them had previous training experience. Its never too late to teach an old dog new tricks! People have to understand that consistency is key when training your pets. Jan gives you all the skills and tools you need to succeed, but then you have to go home and put in the effort and work. Far too many people think that trainers are magicians and your dog will magically learn commands in one day. This is not the case, just like with anything in life, you have to put in the work. Jan was very caring and concerned, especially when one of the yorkies had an incident where his leg was injured at the dog park and we had to miss a few weeks of class, she was so flexible and understanding about rescheduling when needed. Jan FAR EXCEEDED our expectations! She really LOVES her job and the animals she trains! read more
