I would like to thank Sabrina, a trainer a Petco, Grass Valley and to give her a 5 star rating for her guidance with my 8 year old Queensland healer Jet. She deserves a medal for her insightful recommendations and knowledgable tips regarding dog behavior. I also have to commend her on her patience, I did ramble on with a complete history of my dog's life....I was reminded, even after 8 years, there are MANY things I still don't know about Jet's (my dog) behavior as it relates to me and how i was most likely making our problem worse. I moved here recently from Northern Washington with my son and 3 Yorkies (Sandy, Sadie and Stanley) while we truly love it here, i have had such a problem finding business that treat customers like people, not annoyances... The Petco Grass Valley is the one place i can go with my girls that I'm always treated like a friend. Most of the employees are wonderful and very knowledgeable. My favorite is a young man named David. Your know him by his hair. He's so understanding and knows how to solve the problems I've come to him with. Even while training a brand new employee he still too the time to help me with a last minute emergency i had one evening late. He takes the time to make me feel important and more than a shopper. Very disappointed to walk in today and see all customers wearing masks and not a single staff person wearing one. This says to me that 1) they don't care about the health and safety of their employees or customers and 2) they are unwilling to comply with the mandate of California requiring the use of masks for all indoor mixed company situations. I have to agree with Chris B...i usually buy online..however it still has a lot to offer...i've had problems with my fish and they helped me understand what is needed and always mention anything can be returned with receipt if it dies..or doesn't work..The employees are very helpful and happy to work with you.. read more

Dexter likes it there , I can bring him in later in the morning which is more convenient for me and he is done in a few hours. I also like that they do grooming where you can see through the window if you wish . He got his best haircut ever last week . The Gals are really nice to dogs and owner . I made my last visit to Petco today. I've been going there for over 20 years to refill my plastic 30 lb bins at their bulk litter station, which is the only reason I still shop at Petco, as they routinely overcharged me for canned cat food by counting the cans incorrectly. Today as I entered their Grass Valley store I saw a "masks required" sign at the entrance and thought, good sign, but when I got close to the register there was a tall man there wearing no mask at all. "Excuse me," I said, "But I thought masks were required in this store." The young man at the register said, "We can't force anyone to wear a mask if they don't want to." Making me wonder what "required" means. Nothing at all in Petco world, it seems. The unmasked man said, "if you're so fearful, maybe you should stay home." Or at least I should stay out of Petco. I stopped shopping their on-line site some time ago as it's buggy, hard to use, and they can't seem to deliver an order of canned food without smashing up a significant number of the cans. I switched to Chewy for canned food. It's a great site and the delivery is great also. Looks like I'll be getting my litter there too from this day forward. I'm glad I won't have to look at the caged parakeets in the Petco stores again. read more

They carry few brands other than their own - disguised by other names. 1. Their toothpaste was runny. They stopped carrying C.E.T., a good brand, and all others. Instead, brought out a "new" brand but If you check into it, it's made and packaged by Petco. 2. Only pull-free harness is made by Gooby. Big store like this should be able to offer a competitor or two. Gooby isn't a particularly well-thought of brand for pull-free brands. Will go to a smaller privately owned pet store. 3. Typically carry only one brand, maybe two of any given product. Dog food might be an exception. read more

I love the people that work here...very helpful! I get my furbabies groomed here and have not had a problem with any of the groomers...I feel bad for Art L. that had a bad groomer back in 2012. The groomers there now are very helpful and nice. Maybe I should sneak a peek next time just to be sure! read more

Absolutely the WORST experience at this groomer! Unknowingly to the groomer, I watched as she literally RIPPED a mat out of my dogs ear. The groomer was heartless. My dog cried and cried (not just a yelp). She kept pulling and my dog kept crying. When I mentioned something to the assistant, she went in to the groomer and what I heard wasn't even close to a professional groomer. My dog now has nicks all over her body and it's not like she is one to jump around for a groomer. She usually sits very still. Upon confronting the groomer, her (daughter ?) started mouthing off saying that dogs are like 4 year olds and you have to treat them that way. Are you kidding me? When a 4 year old is crying do you pull their hair harder and make them scream? I will NEVER bring my pups here again for fear of what they do when I am NOT watching!!! read more

I've heard bad things and have been warned. But apparently I am stupid and didn't listen. Like previous reviewers stated the groomers are the WORST! Do they wait outside crack clinics asking if someone wants a job at petco? The girls seem spaced out and do not listen. I took my dog here for a routine and she left BLEEDING!!!! I should have stayed to watch but didn't think a groomer would abuse my dog. I have to take her to the vet now since the bleeding won't stop. NEVER GO HERE!!!!!!!!!! read more

i'd give zero stars if i could...grooming has gone downhill within the last year. last appt our dog was released with half a haircut. i made the groomer fix her hair in front of me. i literally had to point out spots that needed to be fixed. i could've done a better job myself with child scissors and saved the $90 it cost us. plus waiting 30mins after our appt time to even check in. ridiculous. today we had a nail appt. 30mins later and still no check in. needless to say we left. they need some huge changes in management and groomers. horrible experience and definitely do not recommend. read more

This is a great place for pet stuffs! While I only have one cat, they have a HUGE selection of cat foods & supplies, which could be it's own store alone for cats. When I was looking for what my cat would eat, the employees there helped by asking questions about my cat's history(which I didn't know anything about being adopted) and other factors, and suggested a wide variety of foods to try out in small stages to see what he liked, but also what I thought would be best for him. They even honored returns of food he just wouldn't eat. Every store has their pet foods and such, but the employees there really made & make shopping there a good experience. Thanks guys&gals! I'll never go to GV Petco again. My dog had an appointment and we were on time at 3. They were not done til 5:45. I had to hang around because I'm from out of town. When they were finally through there was an extra $5 charge for trimming her nails. That was supposed to be included in the grooming. It was because they ground her nails, not clipped them. I told the girl I did not ask for that and she contradicted me and said yes, you asked for them to be ground. So, there went her $5 tip. read more

I've come into this location on numerous occasions and each time I find that it's dirty, and that there are critical problems with the animals held in the store. This most recent time I went in, I found 8 dead beta fish on display. Most of the other ones were barely surviving. It seems like they're not getting fed or something. Some of the fish had been long dead, no longer floating, but had sunk all the way to the bottom of their small containers. When I alerted an employee working, she seemed very irritated that I would mention it, and never came to remove them. Avoid this store, especially if you have children, as this would really scare me if I were young. There was also a hamster in the store that seemed really traumatized and couldn't stop panicking and screaming in his cage, but the employees did nothing to calm or soothe him. I'm really disappointed that this company doesn't do anything to improve the store or the wellbeing of their pets. I've also heard that other customers have had the same or similar experiences during their visits. read more

Their groomers suck! I have been paying an arm and a leg for my dog to get a bath and trim here for about a year, and I was ok with it because they did an ok job in a reasonable amount of time. The last 2 times they acted like they didn't want to do it at all. Today (his last time there) I brought him in and he started shaking like he was scared. That should have been when I walked out. So they started checking him over for 10 mins to see if they wanted to do their essential job function at all. Then they resign themselves to do what their paid to do, and I get a call from them an hour later saying that he has fleas, and I could just pick him up. They then hesitantly said they could give him a flea bath if I want. I said "uh yeah! Give him the flea bath!" So 2 hours after that they said he was bathed and dry and I couple come get him. So I get there, and they said that he's too old for a haircut and I would have to take him somewhere else. And that he's matted under his DAMP fur, that could easily be brushed out. One: why couldn't they "easily brush" him out, they are the damned groomer after all, and Two: it's 38 degrees outside and he was still damp after his being "dried". Yet they still try to sell me on some package and ask I want to give them a tip. read more

I'm in this Petco alot, and I enjoy some of the employees, especially 2 of the cashiers. A girl named Alex, and a guy with a beard (I think he also does dog training there), are always very kind and professional. But there have been a couple occasions where I have gone in later in the evening, and some of the other staff have been AWFUL. Last night, I went in and 3 people were working on moving a pallet or something. All 3 were spitting out terrible language SO LOUD, especially a young girl with glasses, dark hair, and a braid. You could hear them clear across the store. Very inconsiderate. It was obvious even the cashier was uncomfortable. read more

I was looking for treats for my 4 dogs ranging from 2 to 110 LBS and thought a good bone to chew on and selected a Made in the USA Ham bone package. It ended up with trip to the Dog ER to have esophageal hemorrhaging treated due to bone shards from the new bones purchased at Petco. When I was give the two bags of shards I thought I should let Petco know the dangers and went to inform Petco of the danger. The manager stated i should have known better than get a ham bone and stick with Beef bones. I asked that at least they post a warning sigh to prevent this issue from happening to others and was told to contact corporate. I did and end result they didn't care our loved one was hospitalized. They wont do anything to prevent it from happening to others and it was probably due to the bones being cooked to fast. So They wont pull them from the shelf or warn customers of the dangers to your pets. I wont be shopping there any more be cause i cant trust the safety of the products and they don't care about the risks to my animals. Summary please dont buy the American Made Meat on Ham Bones as they can easily Kill your dogs we ran up $500 in vet bills. Lession Learned read more

The staff here is great. Chloie has been the groomer for our two dogs for months now, a black lab/blue heeler mix and a dobie/pit mix. She is just awesome with our dogs. The trainer there is also great, she helped us with getting the dobie to be better behaved on a leash and to further along the training on our lab mix. Very patient. Excellent selection of foods also. Very easy to find something your pet will love. Oh, they almost always have a dish of water for the four legged ones right near the bathroom in the right rear corner of the store LOL read more

The store is fine but DO NOT get your dogs groomed there! I had an appointment at 9am and was told they would be done in a few hours. Not hearing from them, I finally showed up at 4pm and they hadn't even started on my dogs! They lied about it and said they were "almost done" as I watched through the window as they rushed and completely HACKED my dogs fur. They looked like they were groomed by a lawn mower and had been left in a cage ALL day long. Your dogs deserve better!! Go to Brenda's pampered pets - AMAZING experience!! read more
