Heartbroken and Disappointed After 10 Years I've been taking my dog to Petco for grooming for the past 10 years. The same store, the same dog. Over that time, we've trusted them with our pet's care and well-being. Unfortunately, today I was met with a level of insensitivity and poor service that has left me deeply disappointed. My dog is now a senior -- his rear legs are getting weak, as happens with age. But despite his long history with them and his calm, gentle nature, Petco refused him service today solely because he's getting older and less mobile. No effort was made to discuss alternatives or accommodations, no compassion shown for a loyal customer and a dog who's been nothing but well-behaved for a decade. What's most upsetting is not just the refusal, but the complete lack of empathy. Senior dogs deserve more care, not less. And loyal customers -- both human and canine -- deserve better than to be turned away without consideration. Petco had a chance to show understanding today. I signed up and paid for the AKC Canine Good Citizen's class at Petco in Grass Valley. Huge mistake! Paid for the class in February and got switched to a different class because there was not enough people signed up. I went to the store to check on the start time and date of the class that was finally about to start in June. My dog and I waited in line at the checkout. My dog barked once and pulled toward another dog up by the register. When I got up front, the cashier (whom I later learned was the general manager;) she said my dog could not attend any Petco classes because my dog was dangerous. She went on to say that my dog was aggressive both in front of grooming and out in the parking lot which could not have happened because we simply walked in and over to the checkout line. (I have had my dog in store a half-dozen times previously and she regularly travels with me to all kinds of hotels, stores and restaurants with no problem.) A trainer never evaluated my dog in person, or I would know. The general manager went on to say her 120-pound dog was the only other dog in the class and she would not be putting her dog in a class with my dog. (My dog was never out of my control and is a 62-pound Golden Retriever that is a trained and registered as my Service Dog. I was only bringing my dog in for additional AKC Accreditation and to advance the training continuum that all dogs need.) There were lies and misrepresentations on the part of Petco and the kicker is that they would not process a refund. I waited months, and my dog never went to a single class! I went to Petco Corporate Customer Service and they only offered a gift certificate in the amount of the class. Well, I will never shop there again, and they won't let my dog attend another class anyway. The General Manager is the only one who gets good customer service with her dog. These people have no problem-solving skills, initiative, reasonable judgement or even a hint of ethical behavior. This store deserves the negative internet reviews that it gets and I am determined to spread the word. read more

Maybe it's just me but I find it an odd and unprofessional way for a business to conduct themselves by having employees call grooming clients a day ahead of time when a rainstorm (not snow) is coming to suggest that they may want to cancel or reschedule their appointments. This petco is the WORST. Just went in the other day for nail trimmers. I almost did an online pickup order (ready in one hour), but then I decided to just drive since they were in stock. I get to the store and I couldn't find any nail trimmers, there was only some stocked for small dogs and I needed large dog clippers. I found an associate and asked her and showed her they were in stock and she pointed to a stack of boxes and said "they aren't stocked yet there somewhere in these boxes and I'm not going to go through all the boxes to find them." It was SO rude the way she could have cared less. I then asked her, "well what if I placed a mobile curbside order (ready in one hour) would they be ready then or would you cancel the order?" She literally just looked at me and didn't say anything. Obviously not even caring about her job or the customer. Ultimately I left and went to incredible pets down the road paying more than what petco charged. Regardless I'd rather spend a few more dollars than deal with an ungrateful associate who could care less if I spent my money there. read more

I've never experienced such a great atmosphere every time I visit this store. All the staff are helpful and knowledgeable. Yes at times it can be hard to get help because low staff or a lot of customers but this store is awesome and I definitely want to give a shout out to Grace that works there as she is the sweetest and knowledgeable, very helpful and amazing. After 10 yrs of going to Grass Valley or Auburn PetCo. Several months ago I took my boarder collie mix to the Auburn PetCo. The groomer saw a large mass on my dogs side determined it was a cancerous growth and would not touch my dog. Long story short, and no one listening to me.. The vet at the Brighten Green Veterinarian office spoke to the supervisor at PetCo, explained it's a fatty tumor, therefore they did groom him that day. Nothing further was said at that time, until this week (several months have past) I went to have him groomed in Grass Valley and found out.. the Auburn Pet Co groomer had put a note on their system wide computer, that he was referred out due to a cancerous growth on his side!The supervisor went on to inform me that due to his panicked nature like behavior they could not see him at any PetCo. I was livid! I asked the supervisor how long the groomer had had her license as a Vet to make such a claim and to determine what she had done to make him unusually nervous during his bath! He's 12, this wasn't his first bath! I got an apology, informed the staff had been told not to make diagnosis's but since he was so stressed during the grooming they could not groom him at any PetCo. I went to A Paw Spa in Grass Valley ( a couple staff had worked at my vets office) he looks wonderful, they said he was calm, relaxed, friendly and was absolutely no trouble at all. If you take your dog to PetCo be aware of the way they can blackball you and your animal ( most likely since the groomer had been spoken to about making a medical diagnosis she felt a need to 'get back' at me and make sure I couldn't get my dog groomed at any PetCo by making unsubstantiated claims over their linked system. read more

I also mentioned I was getting married and they gave them WEDDING BOWTIES! It's little details like that that make a great experience. The pink-haired clown makeup cashier at this store is extraordinarily rude and impatient. She (going out on a limb with that assumption) gave an irritated huff when we approached; apparently because of the burden of setting her phone down, caused by paying customers who dare to approach the register. Body language, tone, and facial expression made it obvious that this fraggle-rock troglodyte felt superior and was burdened by our presence. She exuded irritation as my 9 year old daughter stood waiting anxiously for a new pet. We are clean, ordinary, polite people. No controversial attire, no logos, no politics. Just happy pet owners looking to add to our family. Pink Clown, as we shall henceforth call her, became even more agitated when we asked for clarification of an advertised Black Friday deal, incorrectly stating that "items have to be the exact same price for the deal to apply". The fine print of this deal placard was tucked behind the merchandise above which it was displayed. We agreed to pay full price anyways but PC had enough of our questioning the intentionally misleading offer and simply walked away, mid transaction, causing another employee to need to come finish accepting payment. Until now, I had frequented both this Petco and the locally owned pet store. In the latter I am ALWAYS treated respectfully and greeted by polite employees who seem to appreciate all of their customers. I will now shop only at the local pet store. read more

Went in to buy dog food. There was a pallet up front with a sign right next to it stating the food was on sale, so we picked it up. When we went to check out, we were charged full price. When told the associate that it was on sale, she walked over the the pallet, and pointed at a price sticker on the bottom pallet and said the sale price did not apply, even though there was a big sign right next it. The price was for a different flavor. The associate was very rude, speaking to us as if we were feeble minded because we did not see the small sticker on the pallet. We asked her why was there a sign right next to the food that was not on sale. We also asked why would the sign still be on the floor if they were out of the sale item. Why would we not assume the floor sign right next to the stack wouldn't be for the food on the pallet? This pink haired was very condescending, rude, and entitled. She became irate when we asked to see the manager about a rain check on the sale food, and said she would not wait on us. She never called the manager for us, and ignored us while we waited. The Groomers here are terrible. Terrible! I have a rare breed drop coat dog. I don't expect people to understand how to groom him to standard, especially in a world of mix breeds. Petco was my last resort as all of the other groomers were either very low par or booked out for many months. I have 7 dogs, 2 horses, a camel, 3 kids and 5 sheep plus I homeschool- sometimes, even a bad hair cut (which has happened 3 times before) is just what it is. As long as he's clean and his mats get a thorough brush out regularly, I can deal with it. He was entirely hacked last visit, the groomer apologized and said she was pregnant and she made a mistake. Fine. One thing I can't deal with? Poor custom service and today was the last straw. My appt was 845 am. I made sure to be on time, walked up to the door which was closed and locked. I called, no answer. As my back was turned while I was on the phone- the groomer walked out and let an older couple out- and locking the door behind them. She would not acknowledge me at all. Even though I was standing there with the dog she had personally groomed many times. I called again, no answer. I called yet again, no answer. Waited until 9:07 for them to open the store, went in and I was asked for my dogs information. He had been a client before. I had them cancel my appt and I called the manager Sabrina on my way home and I told her that I would no longer be shopping at the store or getting my dog groomed there, I reminded her that I buy high quality food (Acana and honest kitchen) to feed my 5 mastiffs and 100lb hound, I feed raw marrow bones. I buy honest kitchen for my two large exotic cats and top of the line litter. I spend about 450.00 every 10 days at the store and about 60 plus tip at groomers every few weeks. Sabrina didn't really care, I mean I'm just another crazy customer she has to deal with, right? It's easier to offer a shallow Apology and move on with her day. Well, if crappy customer service, lack of recognition and bad grooming are your cup of tea, then this store is for you. If you like being acknowledged for spending your hard earned money and your dog getting a nice do, then it is not. read more

I shop at this petco often for cat food and litter. Last night, lots of people were in the store and I noticed a few shoppers without masks. Our covid rates are spiking, and most stores are enforcing masks. I got my cat food and stood in line, the cashier just finished checking out a woman without a mask. I asked if they are enforcing masks and the cashier said "no, ma'am we are not." I told them they lost my business & I left. We now have under 15% ICU space left and will be locking down, I hope this location will revisit their policies. read more

The fish person young thing gentlemen was extremely helpful and spend time to talk to me about a water clarifier and then got me the fish that I wanted I was very impressed. Lol I have been coming to this Petco store for over a year now and I just love the people that work here. They always say that My Amaya is so cute... (I know they say that to all the dogs but it makes me feel good anyway... ) The store is clean, and has so many products to offer. They have a grooming salon, fish, kitty adoption, and vet office. I was confused by the low rating here, but it sounds like the complaints are very specific and have nothing to do with the quality of the actual groomers. I have an American Eskimo/Pomeranian mix and as you can imagine, he's the fluffiest (shed-iest) dog ever. I've never had him groomed in the 7 years he's been my baby, and I'd just shave him myself every six months or so. Needless to say I was concerned about both his reaction to being left with a stranger with clippers, and about how the cut would turn out. I was BEYOND thrilled when I came in to pick him up! He was the most gorgeous little pup I've ever seen!! I thought I did a pretty good job myself, but the cut was top notch, perfect, even, and so cute I almost melted. He's so clean, and happy, and his nails are perfectly trimmed. I cannot offer enough thanks to the groomer (whose name I embarrassingly can't recall). I will DEFINITELY bring him back here for his next cut. read more

Inconsistently stocked and consistently unfriendly. I have been going to this store for over a year to get products for my dogs and cat. About 80% of the time they are out of the treats for my dogs, over half the bins are empty. If I go back 7-10 days later, they are still out. Petco is Petco. From what I've seen they are all pretty much the same. That's cool that they can maintain such consistency. They all seem to be clean and well taken care of. Anyone who doesn't like Petco on general principles should just go somewhere else. It is what it is. It a big company but the stores seem to be friendly like an independent. The employees are generally personable and competent and happy which tells me that the company is good to work for. That's important and unusual with massive retailers. Ordinarily, I would not bother to review a large company store because it's not much of a benefit to Yelpers because of the consistency of the Petco experience. But there is one thing that sets a store like this apart from its relatives elsewhere, the employees. During our visit today we briefly spent time with Rachel. Before she checked us out, I saw her helping other customers and noticed that she was dealing with a seemingly difficult customer in an amazingly calm and professional manner. She was knowledgeable, personable, and patient way above and beyond the call of duty. I was very impressed. When she checked out our small order, she was happy, enthusiastic, thoughtful, energetic, and efficient. Most importantly, she laughed at my stupid joke and even had a clever comeback. I volunteer for a local nonprofit who does adoption events here, so I spend a lot of time just hanging out here. Petco and its employees have always been very nice, accommodating, and generous to us. Their selection is good and prices fair. Took off one star because I once went into the groomers area to ask a simple question and was talked to like I was an imbecile by one girl (whose name I wish I got), but the other ladies in there were great. read more

My grooming appointment was at 2. When I walked my dog in, the girl at the counter tells me she is going to take her 40 min lunch before she starts on my dog...seriously? I didn't make an appointment for 2:40, I made it for 2. If they're backed up, or having trouble scheduling, they should be calling customers to tell them not to come in for another 40 min, so that my dog doesn't have to be kenneled for 40 extra minutes! Not to mention the grooming took 2.5 hours,NEVER AGAIN. Oh, and when I got my dog home, I realized they had taken the top layer off one of her paw pads, because she was limping. You've definitely lost me as a customer Petco. read more

We scheduled a 4:30 appointment for a bath for our dog and came back two hours later concerned, only to learn that he hadn't yet been touched and was just sitting in a cage. This was a scheduled appointment mind you and I asked to be updated via phone; not one text or message alerted me to their TERRIBLE service! There are times when the staff at Petco is ON, and amazing (Sabrina and the other manager who is blonde, thin, usually there, and wears glasses). Other times, like this evening, I cannot seem to get customer service. Mike, the manager, was missing the point when I explained that I needed him to refund me, since my debit card only paid for part of the transaction. Mike's explination was , "sorry, my machine is backed up (the server) but you can come back tomorrow." Granted, he did offer to sell me the catfood item anyway, which was going above and beyond. The other side of the story, however, is my side, the customer's side. I wanted him (Petco) to refund me since I could not pay. End of story. I finally did receive a refund, but the manager explained it as him having "to short his till." I felt debased and mystified, as I am sure he did also, not understanding how to help me in that moment. I attribute the problem as trying to apply a corporate protocall to a guy (Mike) who is genuienly a decent person, trying to do his job and be a fair and reasonable manager. I hope all of us shopping during COVID can remain calm and treat workers with respect, I did get upset, but I feel my upset was justified. I am sorry to the man in the Washington State T-shirt who offered to help, and buy my catfood, whom I ungraciously snipped at. ((Sigh)) read more

So why the low rating? That can be blamed on the "training" service. I use quotes because from what I can tell, it doesn't exist. I picked up one of the calendars at the stand near the training area that showed several dates available for the puppy training I wanted, but when I called I was told the next available date would be the following month. No problem, classes get full, I happily agreed to wait the three weeks. I even lucked out and was able to talk to the trainer directly and confirmed the start date and time. She was very clear that this was serious business I would have to commit to for the full 6 week course, and I assured her I was happy with that. The first day of class came on Saturday, May 5th at 6pm and I loaded up two rambunctious puppies into the car and showed up at the appointed time. Luckily I decided to scout ahead into the store and found an empty training area. After tracking down an employee, I was told that the trainer had a family emergency and they thought they had notified everybody but apparently I got missed. Fine, no worries, emergencies happen. I thanked the employee, confirmed that training would still be the same day and time the next week, and left. The following Saturday I again loaded up a pair of excited puppies and headed to the store. Again I scouted out the store before taking them out, and again I found a completely empty training area. I ended up talking to an assistant manager this time who - after first questioning whether I had gotten the time right and pulling out the training binder to find that not only was it correct BUT WRITTEN IN THE TRAINER'S OWN HANDWRITING ON THE CONTRACT - told me the trainer had already left and she never sets classes that late, but assured me she would have the trainer call me the next morning. Again I went home, a few gallons of gas and another Saturday wasted. On Sunday the call indeed came - in the afternoon, not the morning, but not splitting hairs on that - where the trainer gave a kind of flippant apology then asked if I still insisted on having that late a training time. I reminded her that SHE was the one who set the time and day, but at this point she'd already wasted two of my weekends so could we move it to a different day? Her tone said she was annoyed, but she did agree to move the training to Monday at 6pm. I confirmed twice that was correct, thanked her and hung up. Monday comes around, I work a full day, sprint home to change into some comfy clothes, grab the treat bag, get the pups in the car, and go to the store only to be met with an empty training area. I sincerely doubt somebody who hasn't mastered the lofty skill of "calendar" is capable of teaching a puppy anything. I got the manager this time and told him what happened. Again the disbelief, again the training binder comes out, and again it shows the original start date and that it was moved to Monday. He at least had the courtesy to look embarrassed as he gave me my refund. But here's the kicker, and the thing that prompted me to write this instead of just letting it go: When I signed up there was a bonus to my Petco Pals account. Puppy food is expensive so I was glad to get a little bit of a break on that. When I was refunded for the class, THEY TOOK BACK THE PALS POINTS. So ultimately, no harm no foul to the store or the trainer as they needed to put in no work and took no monetary hit, whereas two of my weekends and an after work evening were burned up with nothing more than a halfhearted apology. tl;dr - puppy trainer personally set 3 dates for classes and never bothered to show up for any of them, and all I got was an apology for my wasted time. read more

Never again will I go into this Petco location. My wife scheduled a bath and nail clipping for our chocolate lab. She provided the necessary information for the appointment. She arrived at the store on time for the appointment but was told the groomer wasn't available (for whatever reason). My wife proceeded to walk around the store and kill time the best that she can until the groomer is available. After about 30 minutes past the appointment time, the groomer shows up and says that because she is 6 months pregnant she can't bath our 70lb lab. What? You had that information on the reservation. Why didn't someone call and explain the situation prior to the appointment? Horrible customer service...and NOTHING was given as compensation for our time and inconvenience. This is the new norm for customer service at a lot of retailers...and all of them will be losing business. read more

I would like to thank Sabrina, a trainer a Petco, Grass Valley and to give her a 5 star rating for her guidance with my 8 year old Queensland healer Jet. She deserves a medal for her insightful recommendations and knowledgable tips regarding dog behavior. I also have to commend her on her patience, I did ramble on with a complete history of my dog's life....I was reminded, even after 8 years, there are MANY things I still don't know about Jet's (my dog) behavior as it relates to me and how i was most likely making our problem worse. I moved here recently from Northern Washington with my son and 3 Yorkies (Sandy, Sadie and Stanley) while we truly love it here, i have had such a problem finding business that treat customers like people, not annoyances... The Petco Grass Valley is the one place i can go with my girls that I'm always treated like a friend. Most of the employees are wonderful and very knowledgeable. My favorite is a young man named David. Your know him by his hair. He's so understanding and knows how to solve the problems I've come to him with. Even while training a brand new employee he still too the time to help me with a last minute emergency i had one evening late. He takes the time to make me feel important and more than a shopper.
