Went in to look at their tarantulas and supplies associated with caring for one. Some shelves are not properly tagged and merchandise seems to just be shoved where they could find space for it. The store was very cramped and congested, multiple U-boats of product were blocking up isles. I went to this location to get my dog's vaccines and to get her ear, examined the doctor told me that she was unable to examine her ear and also unable to give her her vaccines because she is " anxious, and uncooperative" And they still went ahead and charged me $90 plus fees for an examination. She basically told us to come back and reschedule a tech visit which is gonna cost me $57 including the cost of the vaccines...... so disappointing read more

I feel sad writing this review, but I believe it's important for customers to know about my experience. Last Saturday, my mother and I went to Petco to buy some pet supplies. When my mother needed to use the restroom, she asked the cashier for the key. The cashier informed her that the key was on the floor. Unsatisfied with this answer, she asked another employee, who then told her that the bathroom was broken. I found this odd, so I asked yet another employee, and they said someone had the key. Deciding to hurry up and collect my supplies, I went to the cashier to pay. While in line, I overheard the second employee--who had a Justin Bieber haircut--tell another customer that the bathroom was broken. After that, he jokingly told the cashier that if a customer asked for the restroom, he should say it was broken or provide some other excuse because customers are "disgusting." I was shocked and angry at this comment. When he saw my reaction, he asked if I needed any help. I replied no and completed my purchase. Afterward, my mother and I went to Target, and she was finally able to use the restroom. Feeling dissatisfied, I called Petco to speak with the manager and explain the situation. During the call, I learned that the employee with the Justin Bieber haircut is a team leader and had taught the new employees to use this excuse. I can't express how disappointed I am. I've always enjoyed my visits to this Petco location and had good experiences with all the staff. I chose this location over the one in Lemon Grove because of the customer service and better parking. Even though Lemon Grove is closer to me, I may start shopping there instead since my past experiences have been excellent and I haven't felt misled. Side note: I dont remember the employee's name but I remembered his hair style. Sadly, I will rate this store a 3/5 because i remembered a few times customers have asked to use the restroom and employees told them the bathroom is broken. This review is for Vetco vaccine clinic. Apparently, this is a mobile clinic owned by Petco but if you talk to Petco, they don't take any responsibility for it. I had two appointments this evening at 7:20 and 7:25 PM. They were both canceled and I was not notified. After checking and seeing that the appointments were canceled I received a text stating that I have those appointment still and I should arrive 10 min early. When I contacted Petco in La Mesa multiple times to verify the appointments, they stated that the vetco vaccine clinic is not there and that I should continue to call back to check to see if they have arrived. read more

I remember liking this store more when my dog was still alive to be honest. This store is definitely geared more towards dog owners. I usually come here now every few months for cat toys for my mom's bengal and the teeny tiny section for cat toys is ridiculously small, but since she's a big fetch lover, I can make do with smaller dog toys instead. Service is definitely hit or miss here. Occasionally you get lucky with a knowledgeable employee, but it's usually a new kid who could care less about working when we typically come here. Went to Petco today (Sat. Aug.3,2024)after 5 PM to get some crickets for our pets as I've been a loyal customer here for years. I waited in line patiently as there was 15 people ahead of me and only one cashier. 20 minutes later I finally arrived at the front of the line. I asked the elderly male employee for 30 crickets and his response to me was we don't have anyone to help you. Are you kidding me? So he could not go over and get 30 crickets for me or have another employee to do it? He just left me standing there like a fool and then went onto the next customer. Our appointment was at 330p 3/30th and we called to confirm address around 12noon, for our 330p appt.,when we were advised that due to the rain, can we bring our dog in early(?), as the staff wanted to go "home early" (she said no name) due to the rainstorm. So in compliance I bring, Chloe, 8lb yorkie, in for her appt. with the rabies vac paperwork. The first thing when greeted and handing him the paperwork was he look at the form like I was passing counterfeit money. He looked at me and said he had to go get this examined at the In-store Vet Hsptl on site, that they would call to veirfy. I waited up to 10 mins just to have the employee tell me we can't take your dog this is not a legimate rabies vaccination form, in all honesty, " anyone could of filled out this form" this is NOT legitimate. I fetlt like I am being accused of a crime, of going out of my way and finding a blank Vet Vac form and filling it out, conspiring to commit a crime and then trying to pass it off like I am some hustler// some 2-bit criminal. I didn't argue because the first and last time we brought our dog to Petco for a grooming the groomer clipped her nails too short causing her to bleed and as a result they "comped" our grooming session. So that was my first mistake, coming back to where they butchered my dog last time. I didn't argue, I just said, OK, well thank you and left. I will never go here for grooming again. I had an appointment today for 1:15 for my dog. Jovanny called me at 12 and said he would need additional time for my dog and if I could be there by 12:15. I said that is very short notice, I can be there 12:30. He then said I would have to reschedule. I said I really need this done today, I will try to be there 12:15 but it may be a few minutes later. He said see you at 12:15 and hung up on me. I really did not want to take my dog there at this point, but I really needed this groom done today, so I went. When I arrived to pick up my dog the lead around his neck was so tight I could not get a finger underneath. My dog was so scared and shaking all the way home. I am so upset that the lead was that tight especially since I have a flat faced dog who has breathing issues when stressed. This was the worst experience ever and I really should talk to an attorney about how Jovanny treated my pet. read more

I've had subpar experiences the last 3 times I've been here. I usually go to a different Petco but when I'm doing shopping at Grossmont, this is more convenient. The first time was a few months ago while they were doing construction-- all the Petcos got remodeled to include a vet clinic. There was some (probably) subcontractor out there who looked like ZZ Top Santa, supervising some Hispanic day laborers who were inappropriately dressed in dress shoes and slacks. I would think this situation would be a potential insurance nightmare for a corporation like Petco and I also wonder what protections these workers have-- I'm pretty sure OSHA wants them to wear steel toed boots when they're doing construction. One of these gents began rolling a concrete trash can literally about 20 feet behind me while I was backing up. I saw him and had ample room to finish what I was doing, especially because I was turning, but ZZ Top Santa began yelling abuses at me. So obviously that made me feel fantastic as a customer. My question was, if you saw me backing up and you were worried, how come you made the guy start moving the trash can before I was finished? The next time I went in, they were out of the cat litter I needed (Dr. Elsey's, the best, BTW) and I asked the guy in front if they had any. He said if it wasn't on the shelf,it wasn't there. "You shouldn't come in on a Monday," he said. "Monday's the worst day to come in." I went back today, a Friday, and they were also out of it. I did not bother to ask this time. VETCO REVIEW: Made an appointment to get my dog a health certificate to fly. Made this appointment over the phone and made it very clear what I needed and that I was on a deadline. The Vetco made it very clear the doctor was in and would be able to do this. Vetco called me this morning cancelling my appointment telling me that there would be no Dr in to do these health certs until Thursday or Friday. Ok, so why are you continuing to make appointments? I now have 24 hours to find somewhere to get this done after not ONE but TWO separate Vetcos fumbled my appointments and are potentially ruining all my travel plans. This Petco probably has the worst customer service of all the Petco's in the area. I've never had so many problems with employees being rude or unhelpful. This location also seems to always be out of a lot of things I need. My last interaction was 6/29 where I needed to buy Hills Canned Puppy food and there were 0 cans. I was like okay, I see there are cans stacked in a huge pile for employees to put away from what must have been an order of many types of brands. I asked an employee if they wouldn't mind grabbing me some cans of my requested food since I could see it in the pile. I was met with an unenthusiastic "no I can't, they're at the bottom of all the other cans". I said I didn't mind waiting if they could just, you know, remove the other cans to allow me to get the good I need since my puppy had no more food. He told me he couldn't do that because he wanted to get the cat food done first. And told me to "just come back tomorrow or buy a different brand" I feel this is an unacceptable answer. If you're working at a pet store, you should know switching brands should be done slowly over 5-7 days as it can cause gastrointestinal upset. Meaning mixing it in with your current brand. I left really annoyed and went to a grocery store to buy some chicken and rice as that's a more acceptable bland food if you don't have anything to feed. I came back the next days and it STILL wasn't in stock. I've had numerous bad encounters here with cashiers. But this review is already getting long so I won't get into that. Awful store.
