I've had subpar experiences the last 3 times I've been here. I usually go to a different Petco but when I'm doing shopping at Grossmont, this is more convenient. The first time was a few months ago while they were doing construction-- all the Petcos got remodeled to include a vet clinic. There was some (probably) subcontractor out there who looked like ZZ Top Santa, supervising some Hispanic day laborers who were inappropriately dressed in dress shoes and slacks. I would think this situation would be a potential insurance nightmare for a corporation like Petco and I also wonder what protections these workers have-- I'm pretty sure OSHA wants them to wear steel toed boots when they're doing construction. One of these gents began rolling a concrete trash can literally about 20 feet behind me while I was backing up. I saw him and had ample room to finish what I was doing, especially because I was turning, but ZZ Top Santa began yelling abuses at me. So obviously that made me feel fantastic as a customer. My question was, if you saw me backing up and you were worried, how come you made the guy start moving the trash can before I was finished? The next time I went in, they were out of the cat litter I needed (Dr. Elsey's, the best, BTW) and I asked the guy in front if they had any. He said if it wasn't on the shelf,it wasn't there. "You shouldn't come in on a Monday," he said. "Monday's the worst day to come in." I went back today, a Friday, and they were also out of it. I did not bother to ask this time. This Petco probably has the worst customer service of all the Petco's in the area. I've never had so many problems with employees being rude or unhelpful. This location also seems to always be out of a lot of things I need. My last interaction was 6/29 where I needed to buy Hills Canned Puppy food and there were 0 cans. I was like okay, I see there are cans stacked in a huge pile for employees to put away from what must have been an order of many types of brands. I asked an employee if they wouldn't mind grabbing me some cans of my requested food since I could see it in the pile. I was met with an unenthusiastic "no I can't, they're at the bottom of all the other cans". I said I didn't mind waiting if they could just, you know, remove the other cans to allow me to get the good I need since my puppy had no more food. He told me he couldn't do that because he wanted to get the cat food done first. And told me to "just come back tomorrow or buy a different brand" I feel this is an unacceptable answer. If you're working at a pet store, you should know switching brands should be done slowly over 5-7 days as it can cause gastrointestinal upset. Meaning mixing it in with your current brand. I left really annoyed and went to a grocery store to buy some chicken and rice as that's a more acceptable bland food if you don't have anything to feed. I came back the next days and it STILL wasn't in stock. I've had numerous bad encounters here with cashiers. But this review is already getting long so I won't get into that. Awful store. I politely asked Lucille if she could please assist me with a price match. After agreeing she seemed extremely annoyed and me made feel like I was a huge inconvenience to her. Even after assistance from a manager, she was still unable to complete the price match and rudely said, "well I hope your day gets better" as I was leaving. I have been bringing my dog here for over two years, he has been seeing the same groomer Sandy. I had an appointment with the Sandy but when I arrive I was told she no longer work there, that she transferred to a different Petco... Why wasn't I notified? So the gentleman John said he would groom my dog so I said okay it's been a while and my dog needed to be Groomed. I will Never go back there... my dog had no hair he was shaved completely down to his skin, not what I requested or asked for I have a multi poo and was very specific on what I wanted that's why I always went to Sandy! We have been taking my dog to their grooming services for a few years now and unfortunately the quality and care has gone down. Our dog has sensitive skin on her behind and belly, so we ask them to leave those areas alone when she gets a coat cut. The last like 5 visits they have continuously cut her fur down in those areas and have left small cuts, resulting in her licking and being uncomfortable until it heals. We just took her in and requested yet again to have those areas left alone and again she has come back to us with irritation from them cutting those areas low, leaving cuts that she continues to bother. Regardless to who we have spoken to they continue to ignore this request and we have to deal with the aftermath. Due to this lack of care we are taking her elsewhere. I am very disappointed and disheartened for our dog being treated this way and for our concerns and requests to be disregarded. read more

I've taken my pup here for a bath before and was really pleased so I decided to come back to get him groomed. Well, WORST mistake ever. First of all, the groomer is the same person who gave my pup a bath and knows my pup is not even a year old yet and that he gets anxious very easily. I should've never given him my pup!!! The groomer was already showing signs of uneasiness once I gave him my pup, but I don't understand why he still accepted the groom and proceeded to go along with it. An hour later the manager calls me saying that my pup is at the vet in the building because he has a cut on his ear and is bleeding very badly? Honestly, glad that the manager spoke to me in a professional and caring manner or I would've lost my mind. Second, I had asked the groomer for a teddy bear cut and he had informed me that he will try to give him that although my pup has some matted hair behind his ears and butt area -- so I'd like to know why ALL of my pups hair is gone?? Has he not ever seen a teddy bear cut? Third, I had been informed of the cut on his ear, but come to find out when I picked him up that he has a cut on his thigh as well? I'm just completely flabbergasted with the whole situation. If you know you are an inexperienced groomer then why would you still accept to groom a dog you feel uncomfortable about? VETCO REVIEW: Made an appointment to get my dog a health certificate to fly. Made this appointment over the phone and made it very clear what I needed and that I was on a deadline. The Vetco made it very clear the doctor was in and would be able to do this. Vetco called me this morning cancelling my appointment telling me that there would be no Dr in to do these health certs until Thursday or Friday. Ok, so why are you continuing to make appointments? I now have 24 hours to find somewhere to get this done after not ONE but TWO separate Vetcos fumbled my appointments and are potentially ruining all my travel plans. I have a suggestion that maybe you check the schedule before you make appointments instead of regularly and consistently letting down your customers. read more

We have had such great experiences so far at this Petco! Very soon after getting our corgi puppy Rudy, we brought him to puppy play time(a free 30 minute session on weekends to socialize your dog in a controlled environment) and Rudy loved it. Arthur, also a store manager, and Elle are both dog trainers at Petco who facilitate puppy play time and they take great care to make sure that the puppies make friends with similarly tempered dogs. This was really important to us because our dog was very small and we didn't want him getting tossed around by much bigger dogs. At puppy playtime, Arthur let us know about puppy training classes offered at Petco and with the $50 store credit rebate, we couldn't refuse. We're now on puppy class level 2 and Arthur has been the best dog coach ever. Living with Rudy has been really difficult for us as neither have been the primary caretaker of a puppy before and Arthur's efforts and care for the dogs in his classes really shines through. On more than one occasion, we've stayed after class to ask Arthur some questions about Rudy's behavior or what method might best fix an issue we're having and he graciously will sit and talk with us about a solution. When we were looking into getting a harness, Arthur showed us a few options he recommended and even helped Rudy try them on to see which fit best. Long story short, this Petco has by far the nicest employees I have come across, and Arthur is the best. Without his endless patience and weekly guidance in classes, we would have been lost in trying to train our dog. Thanks Arthur! read more

First off- the shopping carts are always being used up by staff restocking. If people need to buy big bags of dog food you're forced to just carry it and stand in line with it. Second, they're never stocked on most grooming supplies. The aisle is always thrashed and picked over. Third, this store is a complete mess as far as organization and it makes me want to shop Amazon instead. Yikes. Today was my first time in the La Mesa Petco. I could not get a convenient salon appointment for my dog Angel, so thought I would try this salon. It was easy to make an appointment using the Petco app. When I dropped off Angel I was impressed at the thorough check in process. The stylist made sure she knew what I wanted for my dog. The stylist was friendly and treated Angel like an old friend. On my way out the manager, Kristeen engaged me on the Thrive vet services available and inquired about Angel's food and treats. I was amazed that Kristeen went to the salon to meet Angel. I felt like I was with some awesome friends. When I picked up Angel the stylist made certain I was satisfied with the groom. I can assure you I was very satisfied and delighted with the lavender bows. I drove an hour to get to this store and it was worth it to me and Angel. I'll be back! read more

My dog has an incredibly sensitive stomach and they were out of stock on his regular food. Mr Chad went above and beyond to help find a substitute. This is the first negative review I have publicly given any establishment. Let me start by saying that my husband has been coming to this la Mesa location for our loving boxer charlie for about 5 years since he moved here to la Mesa. We have not once, ever had any issues or complaints with any of the staff there or any negative feedback when picking up our dog after his grooming appointment. In fact we always leave at least $10-20 tip every visit. Today, we will not be returning to this location, we have filled a corporate complaint and need to express to fellow customers and staff at this location how unprofessional and uncomfortable they made us feel on this visit. The staff member Trina, was helping another customer check in their dog at grooming; there were several other patrons in line along with myself. She decided in-front of other customers to loudly and inappropriately indicate that my dog is aggressive with other dogs and to watch out. While my husband holding Charlie who was sitting their patiently waiting to check in but in absolute shock. Sam my husband is a Purple Heart recipient of the US Army and an Iraq combat veteran; Sam's dog Charlie is a combat veteran service animal registered through all points of the and VA who was given professional on leash canine training. Charlie - is great on and off leash, great with other dogs and people and has never had an issue at any other locations we have been too along with when we leave him at wag hotels. The two points here are that 1. If there was any issue, the employees at sed location must share this news directly with the customer regarding the dog. 2. To not embarrass and disgrace a dog/customer in front of other patrons; any one included. And again, this dog is a service animal. Period. This message is to express to the staff mostly at this location and frankly anywhere this is not how you handle this. Lastly the manager - had poor communication skills along with no solution or remorse to make us feel at all comfortable when attempting to address this with her ; Kristeen. I called the specific location and asked about prescription food for my cat and was told it was available and i said i would be by to pick some up. When i got there the vet area was closed for re-org and when i asked one of the Petco employees who i would have talked to they said i may have been forwarded to a call center (why wouldn't they call center tell me i wasn't talking to the location i had called when i said i would stop by)? I accepted that as bad communication but not critical. Today (a week later) i called in and confirmed i was talking to someone at the vet area of the store i was going to and asked if they were open and available today and they said yes. When i got to the store (12:30) the vet area was closed for the day. A Petco employee said he didn't know they had left and weren't coming back. Without them i could not, again, buy my prescription food. I understand that it is hard to find competent help but there needs to be better communication and honesty about what the hours are going to be. As someone whom works in costumer service my self ; and has dealt with many different management/ management styles I have never experience such an un-professional management until shopping at this store. My wife had previously worked at this store , and the day she was off we had went into the store because we had order some cat items off the website and we had some questions. Upon entry to the store there was no one at the front ; we looked and we had seen an employee and we had asked if our order had gotten picked yet from the floor ; come to find out the order was not showing. Upon receiving said information we went to talk to the manger , to get some clarification on our order. My wife had asked about the order and the manger had my a snarky remark saying why she did a delivery instead of picking it up in store. Which is not the point , rather or not she did a deliver order or a pick up in store order we still had questions. Furthermore I went up to the front counter to continue to ask our questions , while asking said questions ; the manger answer were very short and felt like I was a bother. She handed me the device they use to look at orders ; and behold our order but it's only 2 out of the 5 items we order. I let her know that we order five items and she said "well that's all that popped up , I don't know what to tell you" I proceeded to show her the order on line and she said " they are going to have to go to a different store and grab it because we don't have it" once that was said I told her that they do have it on the floor that we just seen it. While this was happening another costumer comes up ready to check out , the manger walked away from me and went to help the other costumer; which is not a problem at all ; but as someone who works in costumer service ; the manger should've not just walked away with out verifying that the costumer she was previously helping had no further questions. I was highly irritated after the interaction I found my wife and I tell her that she needs to talk to her boss or I am going to. After leaving the store , my wife gets a message from the manager stating "I heard what you partner said about needing to check me. We can have a conversation about it next time we work together. Have a good day. Thank You." As a manger that is completely and utterly un-professional and disrespectful. Because at the end of the day , we are paying costumers rather my wife worked there or not and my wife has nothing to do with what I said. read more

The aquatic fish department here is amazing. The tanks look well kept and the fish look healthy. I've gone in a couple of times to buy fish, plants, and get my water tested and Mark has helped me out each time. You can tell he actually cares about fish and is super knowledgeable about behaviors and water quality. Its nice to see someone passionate about fish! read more

I came in tonight to get the free pound of dog treats since the Padres struck out nine or more players during last nights game. I should preface my review by saying that I have also gone to this location and the locations in Santee and El Cajon as well to get free treats. I always buy something. Usually I spend somewhere between $10-$20 and ask for my treats at the counter. Why is it at the La Mesa location I always feel like they don't want to give the treats away? Is the money coming out of your pocket? Santee and El Cajon are always super nice and accommodating and here I feel like you guys are mad when I even ask. The store was clean and pretty easy to navigate, it looked like they had just gotten a load in so there were some piles stacked around the store. The selection of dog foods was pretty slim for a petco, I don't know if they are just a smaller store than the others, or simply can't carry all the lines of the brands. I'm giving a low score because I was walking around looking for certain types of foods and was never once greeted or asked if I was finding everything I was looking for. There was one employee who was helping someone else right next to me and I wasn't even acknowledged! I think the store needs to hire more employees since it looked like a ghost town, if they had more employees they would be able to assist the clients better. read more

My mom tried to her her senior dog's nails clip so he doesn't slip so much. Called Petco Groomers and they asked how old the dog was. Being an honest person I told them, "14". The person on the other end said, "we don't groom dogs older then 10". Are you kidding me! Petco sells many things for "elder" dogs but won't groom them. If any of you have a senior dog, or not, don't give your business to Petco. If they have a policy to not give every dog the same service.....don't waste your time. I don't know how a big company can promote themselves as a "pet store" when their employees won't give fair service to all. I would love someone from Petco Corp to write me back and tell me their rational to not servicing senior dogs. If this is your policy then you need to put this in huge writing at all your stores. Hopefully you'll lose much business with this policy. I will also write ASPCA, the Human Society, and any other organization that promotes animal rights to tell them Petco does not support them. Not sure if they had a change in employees, but their people are always so sweet and help when they can. They find someone who can answer a question they can't. I'd give them more stars but their leash and collar selection suuuucks maaaan. They don't carry Kong leashes or collars etc. we had to drive to santee (not that its super far, but inconvenient that day) petsmart to finally get my fur babies the perfect Kong harness set they could have. Normally get their Blue brand food here and get a couple training snack items on sale. Wish they'd carry better Bully sticks. Maybe it's because they're such a small store?
