Came in to do a return; one with receipt; one without. I have a Petco account and have been a customer for years. This is the first time I needed to do a return without a receipt. However they refused my return without receipt for an unopened item worth $20 because it's apparently an item that has recently been stolen at their location. The associate that helped me Juan- was very nice but I am upset at the manager Andrew- that refused the return. I shouldn't be responsible for theft that occurred in their store or for their lack of security now should I ? How is that good customer service ? I was told I could try to do the return at an other store but I currently don't have a car and getting to an other Petco will be a real hassle. Additionally; I saw the item I was trying to return near the checkout- no locks no anti theft device on them- just like when I bought it from them in the first place. So they don't seem to try to prevent any more thefts of the device but they sure want me to pay for the consequence of their lack of security of it. Baffling. I am also very upset reading other reviews to see that this particular manager-Andrew- has been terrible for more than a year. How is that acceptable ? I had a terrible experience here. I went in to go check out the guinea pigs while my friend was getting gas. The first thing I saw was a dead guinea pig in the corner of the cage. Then I talked to the worker about the guinea pigs and he essentially scolded me because I said I was thinking of getting a piggy. He asked me how many guinea pigs I had at home and I said two, but then he proceeded to ask if I had separate cages for them because "they need to be separated when they are older because they get agressive". He said it was his responsibility to not sell piggies to bad homes. I was so confused. I understand he was doing his job, but these workers should study more about the animals they are selling. 1) guinea pigs are highly social animals. They are pack animals in the wild and they thrive with cage mates. (Albeit you must be careful when introducing them to each other) 2) you do not need to separate them when they get older. 3) the cages at petco are not adequate but a c&c cage is highly suitable for multiple guinea pigs. I don't understand his incompetence nor the audacity he had to try to insult and "teach" me with false information. The workers here need more proper training. read more

I usually love coming to Petco for their Halloween costume contest. They usually give a goodie bag with treats for all the participants. Today we had gone & no treats. There was only 6 dogs who participated. They had picked the top 3 based on the owner wearing a costume matching their dog. Totally lame.. won't be coming here again. Went in and took my puppy for a first haircut, they didn't check the 7 things before they even took my pup in. They ended up saying that he was too uncontrolable so they were unable to groom him only bathe him they even hurt his paw. My puppy is very friendly, he listens and is obedient so for them to say they were unable to cut his hair because he was not controllable is crazy. I ended up calling Pet Smart right after I left and guess what, they were actually able to cut my puppys hair without one problem, they said he did great and was a great puppy they even requested to keep taking him there because he was so easy to work with. This really proves who actually tries and wants to work . Thank you Petco for messing it up and having me find a better place with better customer service. read more

bought a $14 beta and it died one day later. when i picked it out it had a swollen belly and the guy working said she's probably pregnant...i bought it and the next day it died...i looked it up and all the signs say it had dropsy...i have fully established tanks and have tested the water multiple times and everything is good. they made me leave the store and get my tank water so they could have it tested. i went back home and got water to test. they tested 10 different things and it was was great (one part alkalinity was off but one point which isn't a big deal) and she wouldn't return the dead fish. and didn't even know what dropsy was and didn't even have any items to "fix the alkalinity" so unprofessional and didn't hold up to petcos "customer satisfaction guarantee" read more

I usually bathe and clip my dog's fur myself but am no way a pro at it. I also don't feel comfortable clipping my dogs nails so for the last 4 years I'd bring my dog to Petco for a haircut and nail trim and gland treatment between home cuts, about 3-4 times a year. I know that results are always hit and miss with Petco depending on the groomer and their experience. Sometimes I get "lucky" and actually get a groomer that knows what they're doing and actually knows a thing or two about dog breeds and appropriate haircuts for them. But often times my dog leaves there with a haircut I tell myself I'll "get over" in a week or two when it starts to grow out, or I rush home to do damage control and clean up areas they missed and I focus on the positive of her at least getting her nails clipped (which I'm terrified of doing myself)... for $70. My most recent visit put me over the tipping point where I'm just not willing to gamble on if the cost will be worth the finished product. After leaving my dog for 4 hours to get groomed, I was so excited to see her when I picked her up. So excited that I didn't notice the uneven haircut and the severe irritation to my dogs rectum. Directions clear were clear and simple. There were only two places I didn't want them to cut, her face and her tail, but they only got one of them right. So my Westie's face now looks like a rat. There were also unsuccessful fading attempts on her neck, where it looks like they tried to give her some kind of a Poodle cut. And, as usual, she has patches of long fur scattered about and areas where it looks like the clippers went all the way down to skin. And regarding the gland treatment, the groomer told me the glands were impacted so it took extra work to get everything out. I expected there to be some reddening and irritation, which is normal. When I got her home, however, my dog had so much irritation that she kept us up at night with licking and butt dragging, then when I inspected her it looked like there was scabbing or something occurring. So, I took her to the vet the next day where they did a full inspection and found both glands still full and inflamed. They also informed me that Petco does their gland treatment differently where they only squeeze the outside of the gland which usually just causes more irritation rather than allowing for any real draining. After going to the vet I returned to Petco asking what happened and why she looked so bad. The manager told me that my dog was groomed by a new hire in training with the grooming manager assisting. ... I'm seriously at a loss for words... Two dog groomers would let such a poor representation of their work leave the store. Two people -- two sets of eyes, one pair a veteran. I'm afraid for the new hires learning this is acceptable. I then asked the manager about the gland service Petco provides and he said, "yea, I was a vet tech before, and we're not allowed to do it the right way." I don't know why Petco would offer this service if they are unable to perform the treatment properly. It's dishonest. I was never really extatic about Petco's grooming but used them because they were reasonably priced and conveniently close. I'm never going back to Petco after this horrific experience. I'd recommend taking your dog to a vet for any gland treatments and to a groomer that doesn't have such high turnover rates. Petco didn't reimburse me the cost of the service but did offer a free haircut... which I'll use, never. I would be too worried for my dog at this point. Word of advice: DO NOT BUY THEIR SICK FISH! A few years ago I lost all my fish because of one sick little fish I purchased at a Petco(dofferent location). I now know that they are notorious for not taking care of the animals they sell, but this place is terrible! I recently got a 50 gallon tank and I only have three little fish in it, so I figured I'll check out this location since I've never been there. After barely looking through the fish, I spotted several dead ones. I know that in this industry lots of fish die, but are removed constantly. I notified an employee and he was very polite and starting removing the dead fish. After taking a closer look at the fish I was interested in purchasing, I noticed they were eating something funky. Looking closer I reallized this was the decomposed and half devoured body of another fish. It was already covered in white slime and was nowhere close to the shape of its former self. I asked to see the manager (I believe his name is David) so that I could notify him of the issue. He showed absolutely no concern and argued with me that they remove dead fish every hour. I told him there was NO WAY that a medium sized freshwater fish can start decomposing and turning into a fluffy white shapeless thing in one hour. Not to mention, if this many fish die EVER HOUR how the hell can they sell anything? I'd presume all of their fish would be "removed" within 24 hours at this rate! If I were the manager, I would have cleaned out the dead fish rather than argue with the customer while we both watch the "healthy" fish devour the rotting body of a dead sick fish so that they can share this wonderful diseases in their future owners tanks! read more

Eddie is seriously the best knowledgable person when it comes to fish I came to this place randomly and bumped into him and he completely showed me exactly what I need to do to get my water back in sync because it was everywhere He will also let you know the cheapest way to run your aquarium efficiently I was going to purchase a co2 system for my 3 gallon aquarium and he told not to. He recommend me since I just have a small planted aquarium to purchase co2 water from a local store for 25 cents a gallon I even brought in my pump and substrate to show him the issue I was having and he help me make everything work more efficient That day I didn't spend a dime at the store but I did become so much more knowledgable on how to run a successful aquarium He is usually there three days of the week Wednesday, Thursday, & Saturday Hope this help a lot of people :) read more

I went in to get crickets for my bearded dragons and there was only one person at the register and 10 minutes later after the cashier finished with all the customers in line they went to grab the crickets and I was offended by how much time it took to grab 25. Counting how many are in the bag, dumping a few out (cause it was more than 25) then recounting and adding more cause too many were dropped out, and the process started once more. read more

Alright, I believe this is my first 1 star review, and I believe I am completely justified. I have been in the market for freshwater fish and due to the proximity of both Petcos, Porter Ranch and this one, I have visited both a few times in the past couple of months. I have yet to meet "Eddie" the fish expert that everyone is talking about, but I don't believe it matters when the quality of the fish, or lack thereof, gives enough proof. On my last two visits in the past two weeks, I scouted the tanks and was able to count a total of 10 Sick fish and 18 Dead fish! That makes 28 Sick/Dead out of a total of no more than 70 or so freshwater fish. I was just amazed how little the fish are taken care of. This is not even counting the many sick/dead betta fish that Petco always has nearly 40 of at each store. I went again today and saw that they finally did some maintenance/cleaning of fish and saw only 1 dead fish but this was out of a total of maybe 15 fish available. I spent more time looking at the Betta: there were 3 dead and the many others had unbelievable amounts of feces covering the bottom. I think 4-5 visits with no purchases and same results each time in the fish department is enough, no matter how close. I will no longer be visiting this particular store. The Porter Ranch branch is better, and I did buy a few tetras after a thorough inspection. (Sadly I also saw a MM platy eating another very sick platy with horrible popeye and ripped fins; this was very clear to see and don't know how this went on without my telling the employee that this behavior was in fact NOT normal for platies, and that the popeye would kill the fish if the other didn't.) It's easy to write a lot when you feel strongly about something, whether it is negative or positive. ***28/70 dead/sick fish on one visit. Speaks for itself. I would personally recommend the Petsmart on Victory blvd. The few times I have been there I was helped by a knowledgeable employee, and ended up purchasing the ten fish currently in my fully cycled tank. read more

Clean friendly store! I go to this petco about once a week to keep up on my new aquarium and Eddie is amazing at what he does. I actually went in today, the water for my tank has been getting real dirty, assuming it was my filter I went shopping for a new one. Eddie was there and instead of directing me to another filter he instead gave me great advice and tips to maintain my fish tank. He is truly a genuine person, he greated me with a hug, (after only seeing me a few times). I love this petco and the people that work there. Who knows, You might see me with a name-tag helping you out one day!! read more

Was here with my sister and nephew to get our 2 dogs their rabies shots done. All that went well. And then after I proceeded to take one of two dogs to the grooming salon. And the lady upfront was not welcoming. She was not inviting and she certainly lacked hospitality. She even told me that they only had 30 minutes before closing in such poor delivery. It was a good thing the male groomer came up front. He was energetic and willing to make it work. All we wanted was to get our dogs' nails trimmed. The girl who had greeted us didn't even want to do it and wanted to pass the responsibility to another groomer while the guy who came up front took one of our dogs and did all the trimming in under 10 minutes. Since the other guy was not there to come to her rescue, she had no choice but to take our other dog anyway and do it herself. She looked stressed out and did not like what she was doing. I was annoyed at the fact that she didn't provide us with good customer service. Even my sister noticed and told me herself without me having to tell her. I wanted to give her a piece of my mind. Went yesterday to pick up a flea collar for my dog. As soon as I walked in the gentleman at the register, Sam, greeted me right away and was able to assist me after I asked where I can find flea collars. After showing me where to locate them and discussing the differences between collars and drops, I ended up purchasing drops that would be effective, came with enough to last all summer, and weren't too costly. Pet o should be used only for food and supplies. I would not recommend buying live animals from them. We bought what we thought was as pure white beta fish that when out into a 10 gallon tank actually got its natural color back of blue and pink. These fish are so stressed and sick. We also paid $20 for a pleco fish that died 12 hours after transplant. Take the time and visit a real fish store. Marks tropical in studio city has been around for nearly 40 years. read more

After getting new apparel and food, I decided that my mice needed new friends. I used to have four mice, but two of them passed away. So, I have two lonely female mice and I decided to get new companions. So, this review is dedicated to my beloved mice, Rachel and Robyn...RIP. PetCo is located next to In-N-Out and on the same lot as CostCo. Too many Co's going around here. I walked in and I saw a lot of owners with their dogs on their leash. I saw a sign saying. Dogs on leashes are welcome. Oh wow...I think I need to get a dog friendly place soon. When I found the mice, PetCo didn't have much left. All they had were two young male mice. I was not sure if my female mice, Black Widow and Pinky, were ready to meet and possibly hook up, but I was going to take that chance. I got one of the PetCo's Customer Service Person, Kevin, help get me the last two mice. Price of a mice has been consistent ($2.99 each). My total was $6.56. As I was done checking out...MORE DOGS!! OK, I need to get a dog soon or I am going to go insane without having one. I can't walk a mouse. I could try.... My mice are getting along, but not too intimate on the first date. I made an appointment online for my dog to get a bath and cut and this was my first time at this location due to the fact that our usual place had no openings. After filling out the paper work and explaining what I wanted, I come back and notice he was groomed very sloppy! My poor dog had random bald patches as well as razor burn around his bottom and neck. His face was still dirty and was barely trimmed. I don't understand how this groomer (forgot the girl's name) could do such a crappy job when my dog was the only dog there! I had a curbside pick up order so I called to let them know I was there. The cashier let me know that he was the only one running the floor so it will take a little bit of time. I was understanding and told him not to worry take it out when he can. I parked right in front of the double doors my car was clearly visible, I got a phone call from him asking with car im in as he is making eye contact with me. I have two orders he brings out one order and I ask him about the other one and he's like I didn't see it. I check my app to see what the problem was when he comes back out with the second one and rudely lets me know that I should tell them I have more than one order. Please do your research on Petco before buying any animal from this place. Most of the animals there are sick. They come from Mills. I came in looking to adopt a guinea pig, so I went to their display and saw that one of the guinea pigs was getting bullied by another one. I wanted to adopt the one that was being bullied, so I asked an employee to help me out. I informed her that the guinea pigs weren't getting along and that the other one was bullying the other and all the employee said was "That's funny", she just brushed it off. She then handed me the guinea pig that I wanted and I notice a two lumps under her neck. I informed the employee and asked what they do to help guinea pigs like the one I was holding because she clearly needed care and the employee said "I don't know, do you want a discount?" She clearly didn't care. I'm not blaming the employee because I know this is Petco's responsibility, but it just really made me sad to see that they don't care either. Also after I told the employee it wasn't a discount I was asking about, it was pet care she took her away from me and said "I'm not even supposed to let you touch her." She then proceeded to put her back into the same display this piggy was being bullied in. You could also tell she was smaller than the other piggies in that display. In addition to that how do u expect me to adopt without taking a good look at the piggy?? Also I think she was the manager because she had the keys and all the employees appointed me to her. I didn't get her name, but she currently has orange hair and she worked the night shift. Petco needs to care more and hire the right people who know what they're doing and who care for the pets. I gave this poor rating due to the grooming salon's inefficient and outright denial of the following situation. I went in the salon and made an appointment for grooming for my dog. On the date and time of the appointment I went to the salon and was told the groomer they scheduled with me doesn't come in until 11:00am and they denied they gave me an appointment for that day and time of 9:45am The girl at the desk was the person who scheduled the groomer and time and would not even look me in the eyes as she denied it was her.
