I have had good experiences at this Petco, both as a shopper and also as a student at the dog training fundamentals class. As with all petco's they have a pretty nice selection of almost everything you could think of for your pet, and includes grooming and a vet clinic. I'm a huge fan of their dog clothes and love that they sell local sports team gear. I bought a cute Padres aloha shirt and a pickleball shirt for my dog, both at pretty decent prices. Regarding the training class, both me and my dog learned a lot in the 6 weeks! Our instructor Elizabeth was a seasoned dog trainer. She was very patient, explained things well and answered all of our questions. I appreciated the small class size and the homework each week. The graduation day was also a fun little ceremony where they provided certificates and a cute little graduation cap to take pictures in. I'd highly recommend, especially if you have a new dog or are a new dog owner yourself. read more

Had a grooming appointment not too long ago with them; I went there and even paid extra for a flea bath, definitely didn't get rid of the fleas, if anything now he has more. On top of that his nails on one side (they could only do one side) were cut wayy to short, I had multiple people look at it and said whoever the vet was did it way too short; to the point where he did not want to walk the first couple hours back home. I would not recommend and would not come back, especially if you care for your dogs wellbeing and grooming needs, I'd say spend the extra money and take them elsewhere. This Petco location is one of the worst, especially for Vetco services. The store layout is not conducive to people bringing their pets inside. Who makes one line for checkout when there are dogs?? Dogs don't wait in line as civilly as humans. The Vetco checkin process at this location is bananas. Why have two people for checkin if only one of them knows what they are doing? Also, the vet is not friendly and that's actually the first person my dog has ever snapped at. Took over an hour for my dog to get checked in. Then another 30 minutes waiting for the vet. There were only two people ahead of me. They were also in the process of being checked in when I arrived. I will never go back to this location. Go to this location if you love chaos and if you like spending your time on unnecessary waiting. read more

I came here for the first time on a Saturday afternoon around 4 PM, and it was pretty busy. Parking wasn't an issue, but even with three cashiers, there were about six or seven people in line. Still, I was checked out within five minutes. They had the Blue Buffalo Wilderness cat food I needed, along with the Greenies I usually get for my cats. Prices are the same as Amazon, but there's a great perk--if the Padres get nine strikeouts, the next day everything not already on sale is 25% off. That kind of savings makes me want to shop here instead of ordering from Amazon for my regular purchases. read more

The groomers are great. 5 stars. Our concern is with the checkout. We are always tippers for any type of service. Asking a customer "if they would like to tip their groomer" is one thing. You should never accost a customer over a tip. (Which in our case was coming, as always, by cash).) This is clearly a training issue that should be considered. The fact that we tip with cash which comes from decades in the service industry, and our intimate understanding of taxes, is neither here nor there. Never assume that we have no intention of tipping, because we don't add it to a card/ purchase at check out. When the delivery of the question about tipping at checkout is disrespectful, and it's followed by questions of "how much" "are you sure," and "what about," we have entered "a need for better training" territory. The two stars are for customer service at check out. We appreciate looking out for your colleagues but this was, overly aggressive. This will be the last time I take my dog to this groomer. I asked for a short but still fluffy cut for my mini poodle mix. I asked to trim his face to match his body so he doesn't look like a bobble head. When I picked him up they shaved him all the way down, NOT FLUFFY at all! His little legs look so skinny and his head looks huge in comparison. I said why is it so short? That's not what I asked for. They tried to gaslight me saying "well on some dogs it looks different than the example" I said "I asked for the exact same thing last time at the la Mesa location and it wasn't nearly this short" she then said "want me to look at what you got last time? WHAT IS THE POINT? YOU CANT PUT THE HAIR BACK . Also they make you pay and tip before you even see what your dog looks like! The staff at this Petco saved me!! Whoever was closing on 5/14 - thank you!! My Great Dane was sprayed by a skunk tonight. We realized we didn't have enough peroxide to combat the oil, so at 8:52, i hopped in my car and called on the way to let them know my situation and that I needed skunk shampoo. I arrived one minute after closing - they opened up the locked door for me, got the shampoo for me and rang me up!! Life savers - thank you all so much!! read more

Even though I was told to call and get more medicine for my dog because they didn't have enough on hand the day I had her seen they said I had to come back in for an evaluation to get more when I did call back in. I was also looking for flea medicine and was told I needed to come in for a consultation for that as well so they could determine the dosage even though they have all the dog's information on file. They just want you to come in so they can charge you over and over again. May seem like a good price and a good value but it's a scam. They also never have the same vets which should say a lot. read more

Stopped by here for the first time because we needed to get our senior puppy more treats and it was near our other errands. The store is small and cramped, with lots of product on pallets everywhere. The front section when you enter was dedicated to Halloween products, which was mostly empty. Aside from that, it was distinct there was a dog and cat section; all other pet sections were kind of hidden or not as obvious. Even though we only needed treats, we decided to peruse the aisles in case we ever needed last minute items for our dog and could stop by here as a backup. We discovered they sold the brand of dog food we buy (Merrick), which was a pleasant surprise. We ended up snagging a mini Merrick Thanksgiving meal serving, to give our dog during the holiday, in addition to a box of Milkbone treats. After getting what we needed we checked out all the pets they had for sale: birds, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, fish, turtles, lizards, geckos, snakes, frogs, and tarantulas. One of the employees came to put an albino snake back while we were looking and was nice enough to let us get a closer look as we both showed interest; so cute! Check out was easy, the employee was very nice and friendly. We had no issues with customer service whatsoever. Overall, this location is small and unorganized, but the customer service was good, so I bumped up my review from what was going to be 3-stars to 4-stars due to that. We have no issues coming here and will most likely utilize this location for any last minute items for our dog. read more

This isn't the 1 star review you think it is. Every time I've gone here all the employees are doing the best they can and care about the animals. The guy running the fish section has made amazing improvements even within the span of a few weeks since I was last there. Treat everyone with kindness and respect and you get it back. This one star is because I can tell the employees are unfairly stressed by being understaffed (and likely underpaid) by management. Now I'm not sure if this is a case where corporate isn't supporting the store enough or if this rests purely on the local store management. I was appalled to learn that after this location started accepting Amazon returns they didn't hire someone to help. That is how to burn out your employees and be a bad business 101. Hire more people and raise havoc to corporate, just get your employees more help especially during the Holiday season. If you visit this store, show some kindness to the awesome employees there. I brought my Bernese mountain dog for a bath & they did an awesome job. She was completely dry when I got her back, which I appreciated bc this has been an issue at other places. I believe Charlie was one the who did her service & I could tell from the beginning he would be patient with her, which is important bc she hates getting her ears and paws touched. TLDR: bad experience at this location's vetco clinic, I strongly recommend going to other locations. This review is ONLY for this location's Vetco Clinic. I always take my dog to the vetco vaccine clinic for her shots. We used to frequent the mira mesa location and always had an amazing experience. We recently moved closer to this Mission Gorge location so we booked our appt here. We booked the friendly rover package which includes 2 vaccines, dewormer, and a heartworm blood test For starters, most other locations have a more private area set up for pet vaccinations but for some reason this Mission Gorge location has their vaccine station out in the open, in the middle of the store. The vet tech was kind and meant well but she was squeezing my dog hard to restrain her (my dog is less than 10lbs so she doesn't require much force to restrain). When it's time for the blood draw the lead vet goes in and my dog starts screaming at the top of her lungs. I have never seen her react this way at the vet's before. The lead vet keeps poking her and being unable to get her blood drawn. I see that my dog is BLEEDING on her leg now and has a small open wound and the lead vet claims it's because she keeps moving and jerking around, but I don't know. In the end he was able to give her shots but was unable to draw her blood. I was still charged for the friendly rover package despite not receiving full services. I understand things happen but I didn't appreciate how the lead vet got really upset and started insisting that it's all my dog's fault, that my dog is incapable of getting the procedure done here, and that she needs to "be sedated" for the procedure. I explained that I have never seen her act this way before and that she's gotten her blood drawn without need of sedation many times before but I didn't feel heard. They said the open environment may have stressed her out which, funny enough, was the one thing i could agree with them on. It was definitely not a great place to put a vaccine station and once again, all of the other vetco clinics I've been to had a more quiet area for the dogs. I didn't really buy that my dog needs to be sedated for this so I took her to the vetco clairemont location next day. She was treated with so much kindness and compassion at this location and they had a nice quiet area for the clinic. They were able to draw her blood first try and reported no issues with the procedure!! They even complemented her! She didn't have any bleeding or anything either. I also told them about how I was charged full price despite receiving incomplete services at the mission gorge location yesterday, and the lovely folks at the clairemont location went above and beyond in helping me amend the mischarge. I am glad I trusted that I know my pet best and didn't elect to sedate her. I would still recommend the vetco clinics to others but I would tell them to avoid this mission gorge location... read more

I walked into the store with our doggie, Luna, with a BIG crisis on my hands. I spotted one Petco worker literally with one-half of his upper body under one of the shelves. Embarrassingly, I overlooked that he too had his own crisis and I said loudly, to him "Excuse me. Luna and I have a BIG problem." He immediately got up and asked," How can I help you?". I explained that I could not get the doogie harness -that I may have bought at a different pet store- on Luna correctly. He replied, "Let me see what I can do!" In less than 2 minutes, Luna had her harness on and she began to smile and thank Sebastien with "love licks". Lesson to be learned: If you want the best of the best, #1 Go to the Petco in Poway and #2 ask for Sebastien. read more

I have always enjoyed shopping at Petco and all of their locations have provided great service. That changed today. Petco's La Costa store has a jerk named Humberto who is an arrogant jerk. For years I have been buying crickets for my Chameleon at about $9. a week. In addition, we buy Premium Dog Food, Grooming services and Dog toys. We probably spend at least $2,500 a year at Petco. Never again....hello Petsmart.. My issue is a bought 60 crickets and within one day they all died. when I asked for replacements Humberto said he could not do that. I actually brought the cage full of dead crickets to show him the next day. Still refused and also refused to call his District Manager. This guy has no customer skills at all. Petco to the rescue! I've been to a few Petco locations in San Diego and I'd say this location is one of the smaller ones and much older and in dire need of a makeover. First off- horrendous parking ! The spots are tight and cars practically take over two parking spots, which is a big no no! This location is also crazy busy on a Sunday. I'll know not to come here on a weekend. I was desperate so I had to settle for this location since I had to purchase nail blood stopper for my poor cockatiel. I entered the store and searched through their avian section and it was underwhelming and not very extensive. I could tell the selection wasn't as big as other locations I've been to. I came for my bird's nail blood stopper and couldn't find any. I did snag some bird food, mineral block, cuttlebone, and feather bird bath spray. Customer service: I ended up asking one of the female employees about their nail blood stopper and she really took the time to help me. She did find another alternative blood stopper for dogs and cats which she said is similar to the bird nail blood stopper I was initially looking for. I appreciated her honesty, patience, and helpfulness. She also had a great positive attitude throughout my interaction. It definitely boosted their star ratings in my book. They offer adoption for pets, a veterinary clinic, and grooming services. I loved that this location offers a variety of parrot food for my macaw and on clearance for exotic food. Customer service at checkout was amazing I appreciate the male staff going over my petco benefits and discounts I didn't even know I had available at we're about to expire. When you are shopping and the workers are blocking the aisle, you patiently wait for them to see you and let you through, except Fabian was too busy flirting with the young girl in the leggings who was re stocking, after a few minutes it was clear the conversation was not one two coworkers would have, none of my business except that after a few minutes Fabian who clearly saw me waiting to pass did not care and carried on... finally I said EXCUSE ME!! to what he did not even acknowledge or even made an effort after a couple more minutes, guess he didn't want to mess up "the vibe" with the hot coworker... at no point did he make eye contact or even apologized even when he knew I had been standing there for a while. He is either supervisor or manager, sure not what the store needs, I left and will be doing my shopping elsewhere where they have more respect for customers. read more

Made a stop by for the first time to this location after enjoying lunch at Panda Express near by. It was very quiet and mellow here and I wandered the store with my dog. Was very excited to see all the collars with matching leashes or harnesses (especially for my boy) because typically the only cute ones are for the girl dogs. I didn't get any since I recently got him one but I'll probably be back to get a matching set. Also, I was very happy to see they sell "Just for Dog" food since that's typically the food we buy him at the actual Just for Dog store. It is pricey but the quality of that food is more comparable to people food. The section was huge for it with vitamins and other toppers you can add for your dog. I have been bringing my 2 dogs to this petco grooming for almost 3 years and they're excellent I my dogs have separation anxiety and I always appreciate them taking care of my fur babies. I have sensitivity to perfume smells and I always ask they use non scented shampoo and my dogs always smell clean, and have bandanas or hair bows attached. Awful service from Robert at the groomers. I had an appt at 11:00am. I got there at 10:55am. I was told from other guy that Robert was at lunch and he'll be back in a minute. Finally Robert got there at 11:10am saying "you didn't have a VIP service which means your dog is not coming in and out, I'm also in lunch break so you have to wait" I literally had another appt at 12pm so I told him I can't wait I have another appt. He turned around saying "ok, bye" I'm what kind of service is this? What are the appts for? I good service should've been: 1) I'm sorry for making you wait, would like one of my coworkers to help you with your dog? (There were two more coworkers there) 2) or would you like to come later, we can offer you these times... Would you like to re-schedule? Something like that but this guy has no idea what is giving a good service. Terrible since I had to wait, I had to get bad service from this guy.
