This is a small local pet store that sells quality goods for dogs, cats & some exotic animals as well. They only sell quality brands so the prices are commensurate with that ethos. The guys working in the shop were friendly and helpful. They happen to sell a brand of dog food - Dr. Marty's - that my dog cover models for, so we came in today to take some photos of Cali with the food. She was a bit unhelpful during the photo sesh, but you get the idea. We also bought some breath freshening treats for her called Whimzees & they look like little toothbrushes. This pet shop is located in a little strip, with easy parking. Its tiny but mighty, and has a really good selection of food, from treats, to toppers, frozen and raw food. I like that they carry a lot of products you typically dont see in other stores, and the bonus, its 5 minutes away from where I work, so if I do need something for my pets, I can make a quick pit stop before heading home. I'd give it 5 stars because it has about anything you could need for your pets, but their employees lack customer service big time! I've stopped by on a couple of occasions and you dont get greeted, in fact my first time stopping in one of the employees was very rude that I almost didnt go back, and honestly they sound like they dont even want to be there. The second time going, one of the same guys was there and the experience wasnt much better than the first. I'd been wanting to check this pet store out for months but we either were in a hurry when passing by or we'd drive by when it was already closed for the day other times. Finally! We got to go and it's such a cute little pet store with a good selection of better pet food options. I saw other reviews mentioning unfriendly service. When we went there were 2 ladies working and they were sooooo sweet, warm, chatty and kind. Since Pet Pantry has changed hands (not sure when that was), I do not enjoy shopping here. At lease the last 3 times I have shopped there, the cashier (not sure if has been the same each time but always a male) has been unwelcoming, cold and not helpful. It's a real shame. The previous owner/staff were awesome, helpful & lovely. I don't like shopping there any more. I continue to go only because they are pretty close to me & have the raw food our cat loves. read more

Pet Pantry has it all: local folks who absolutely love animals running a spot with amazing products (lots of local and California-based products, too) with the fullest amount of compassion and love. The team is amazing! We have been customers for more than one year and I absolute adore the team and what they have to offer. I will also share that when we were about to say goodbye to our senior pup, the team helped us to identify food ideas that were nutritious and provided comfort in our pup's final months in life. They helped us with research. They provided samples of items. They asked about her when we visited. This is part of the reason we will drive 20-25 minutes (one direction) just to shop at Pet Pantry. Love these folks! Other details: Pet Pantry cares about the health, well-being and quality of life of your animals (cats, pups, birds, rabbits, horses, etc.). This is a holistically-focused shop, which I adore. You will find natural foods and whole foods for your pets -- easy. They advocate foods that do not contain fillers (thank you!), hormones or preservatives. And they have the best treats! Salmon skins are our favorite -- I mean, I mean...our pup's favorite. They also have a wide selection of raw and dried foods and also gelato/ice cream for pups. I also appreciate that they have goat milk -- but it goes very fast. Really happy that this store is in the Plaza with my favorite restaurants and donut shop. The staff is really friendly and they adhere to the rules of restricted amount of people in the shop. I took my two Pomeranians here to choose their snacks for the week and we came out with so many goodies. The prices are really affordable and as we were checking out the cashier provided a little snack to give the pups directly. I am very torn writing this review. My puppy has been eating a raw diet since October 2020, and I've been a loyal customer at this shop since then. We have a bi-monthly auto order that we pick up religiously. For the most part, you may get someone really nice or you may get someone pretty rude. My boyfriend and I were never super thrilled with the customer service as sometimes we felt judged as we shopped (even after we've proven ourselves to be reliable customers). There are a few nice ones but there are a few that make you feel unwelcomed. Today was the absolute last straw for me. I called to see if I could pay over the phone and have someone else pick up my order. I asked to get a few bags of the Ziwi because my dog was attending a 3 week training camp so I needed to give his trainer a decent supply. I was immediately met with so much push back for wanting to purchase multiple bags of Ziwi as "they need the supply for other customers". Of course they offered to order more for me but we needed the food ASAP. I was very upset to be met with this push back considering I was very ready to purchase over $200 worth of dog food. Overall, it felt quite crappy to remain loyal to this store for almost a year at this point only to be met with backlash for wanting to buy their product. If there was a limit, why is it it never advertised in the store? I've bought multiple bags of this same food at other stores and I might as well continue my business at other stores that would appreciate me purchasing multiple bags of dog food. read more

Politicizes covid safety? Grouchy service? No thanks! 12 year loyal customers done! I don't understand why any business needs to make a political statement about covid safety. I walk in today and not a single employee with masks on indoors. A sign out front reads "Your body Your choice". Well yes, you may in fact, be right, but in an enclosed area, it is courteous to wear a mask and based on scientific fact about saving lives. Despite what you may feel about "your body"......your body can spread covid, and that's not a choice. It's so easy to do the little things for us to get through this pandemic, but premature, unmasking, inside a business and polarizing policies is not the right move. Furthermore, no matter how nice you try to be to the female owner, most days, at best, you'll get a growl. The others have moments of brief kindness, but in general, you usually are left feeling you're interrupting their chat session. If you're not happy serving the pet community, then maybe consider another business. Add to that ridiculous hours and closed on Sunday, sorry, you're here for my convenience, not the other way around. We are done and are moving our substantial business elsewhere. read more

My first experience with this store was tonight and it was very unpleasant. I called and a man answered and had an attitude when I asked questions about a food I was looking for. I get it, it's the end of the work day an you are tired but you should treat every customer with the same respect whether it is your first customer or your last customer. The food I was looking for is from Paleo Pet Raw and this company is currently only at select stores. Unfortunately for me, Point Loma Pet Pantry is one of those select stores closest to me and they DO NOT special order if you wanted to. Not sure if they don't have the freezer space but they don't care to explain anything, just quick witted remarks that make you feel like you don't want to do business but have to because that's the food your dog tolerates. It gets better though! My boyfriend went to pick up a few 2lb chubs and he wanted to make sure it was the right one because the chubs with veggies don't sit right in our dog's tummy and other places we've been to ONLY have the one with veggies. So sorry for double checking so we don't buy the wrong one. If this is how you treat all of your customers, that is pretty sad. If you don't like where you work, don't work there. You have a choice in everything you do, and today two of your employees chose to be nasty. read more

Popped in this morning to get my weekly cans of dog food and they were doing some promo handing out goodie bags. Cool! Got to my car and realized it was all cat stuff, I thought maybe the gentleman that rang me up just grabbed a cat bag instead of a dog bag so I ran back in to see if I could swap. The guy with glasses and bracelets was so rude I was taken aback. "Absolutely no trades, you get what you get." The other cashier even tried to soften his rudeness by saying some of the bags were mixed. So now I have a bag of cat stuff that's useless to me, which isn't a big deal, I'll give it to a neighbor or something. But I certainly don't need a sassy attitude first thing in the morning when I went out of my way to shop small and local at your store. Loved this place. They have a great selection at competitive prices. Employees are knowledgeable and kind. But, then they made COVID political. Many employees refused to wear proper masks during the height of the pandemic. Then they posted some nonsense paper on their door about not discriminating against people for choosing not to wear masks and some other nonsense "this is my peaceful protest" bull crap. Upon entering the store after that sign was posted sure enough there are people and employees maskless. Irresponsible. Dangerous. Jerks. I started coming here after a negative experience at another small local pet store. I was looking for raw rabbit to get my pooch on a raw diet. Terrible attitude!! Grouchy, unpleasant staff. I wish I liked this store as they are a local small business, are convenient and generally carry the dog food lines I use. But I can't stand the lack of service and negative attitude. This last time I went in, the 2 women were doing paper work and couldn't be bothered to look up or help me. They only had a small bag of the food I needed, and didn't even apologize or offer to take down my number to call me when more food came in. They are never friendly to my dogs, and have been judgmental to me about the prong collar I use with my bulldog, which was recommended by a trainer. You guys need lessons in customer service and shouldn't just assume people are going to continue to support you. read more

Our neighbors have been coming here for years and recommended this place to us. We just recently got a puppy, and of course want to feed him some good, healthy food, so stopped in to Point Loma Pet Pantry. Jeanine welcomed me, showed me around, discussed the various options, pluses, minuses, costs. She filled a big bag of various puppy food samples for us to take home and try out, which I thought was really nice. We ended up special ordering a 15 pound bag of the Taste of the Wild brand puppy food (available in salmon and wild bison flavor - yum) , which is coming in on Friday. It's nice to have a place that is so knowledgeable about animals. I'm sure this will be regular spot for us. PS - came back today and got a couple chew bones for the puppy which he absolutely loves -- the .99 "jerky" - which he immediately devoured, and the $6 braided bone, which I think will last him for quite some time... read more

Nice little pet supply store that has a pretty good variety for its size. When one of our previous dogs was 16-17 she got picky and we needed to change up her canned food a lot; PLPP has a great selection. The parking can be real drag...I usually just park a block away and walk. Also, I wish I that PLPP would carry My Perfect Pet like their "sister store" Paw Country does. The staff is always nice and overall I've happy with the quality/service I've received. Products are generally fresh though I was disappointed to see a previous reviewer's experience with spoiled fresh food. I've been in here several times now, and can't think of anything bad to say about the PL Pet Pantry, except for the fact that they are a bit pricey in my opinion (which is why I am not giving them more stars). That said, the staff has always been very helpful and friendly. When I was looking at switching my cat to a healthier (and no-filler) cat food, but worried that I'd buy something that my cat would turn her nose up at, the guy behind the counter gave me about a half-dozen free sample packs of the various dry cat food brands that they sold, so that I could make sure to find one that she would eat (and wouldn't you know, she liked the most expensive one?). When I was looking for a new harness and leash for my cat (I've been training her on one since she was a kitten, so that one of these days I can take her out to the park and on walks), the clerk was very helpful in assisting me in finding the right size, and let me know that if it didn't fit, I could bring it right back for a full refund, as long as I left on the tags. They also have a list of area holistic vets, should you be looking for one, and although they are a small shop, seem to have a decent selection of raw food, healthy food, and basic pet supplies, snacks, and toys. Overall, if you are in Point Loma and looking for a place that sells healthy pet products, give Point Loma Pet Pantry a try. read more

Brenda took so much time explaining to me the benefits of raw for my recently adopted rescue bulldog who had horrible hives due to a kibble I bought elsewhere. I adore this pet shop! The staff is always extremely friendly and helpful. I have been coming here for a few years now, and they greet my dog by his name when he walks in with me. The selection is really great, different from what you'll find at most of the larger chain pet stores in town. They have a nice selection of one ingredient or limited ingredient food and treats, which my fussy chihuahua appreciates! We buy Ziwi Peak brand dog food, which can be hard to find in other pet stores. They also have a rewards program, so we earn free store-credit by shopping here regularly. Every time I go here, everyone is so kind and knowledgeable. My dog Sophie and I have always struggled to find food that she is not allergic to. When my boyfriends mom told me about the place, she goes for cat food which Jakey loves, I was a little skeptical at first. When I went in I was immediately greeted and ask if they could help. We talked for a good thirty minutes about all of Sophie's issues and then I was out the door with some samples of Zignature Turkey and a big bag of frozen Turkey food from perfect pet. I have not looked back since. Sophie is the healthiest she has ever been on this food, I have even started feeding it to my other two dogs and they love it as well! It's funny to read the bad reviews about a man working at this shop because that's what mine is going to be about. I called looking for a popular wet dog food that my dog loves and he said they had two cases. I couldn't find it after I called a couple other places so I decided to drive 15 minutes to this shop. When I got there he asked to help me and I said I'd like to buy the two cases. He immediately said he wouldn't sell me both cases and claimed that he told me this over the phone. I politely said he didn't mention this and then he changed his story and said something about it being popular so we have to remember other people may want it. When I got home I called back and asked the woman who answered what was the timeframe when I could come back to buy more since the man at the front wouldn't let me buy a second case. She said he wouldn't sell me the second case due to a less frequent distribution due to Covid-19 but then said I could special order it. But if I could special order it than that means that they can get it, which means they should have let me buy the second case and order more from the distributor for the store. So it didn't really make any sense. I told her in this case he should have actually told me I could only buy one case. She did apologize for that but what a rude guy. And what's the timeframe when I can come back and buy more? Can I come back in an hour, the next day, in a week? If no one buys the second case in three days can I then buy it? Do I have to bring back 12 empty cans to show I've fully used the first case? I've never heard of a pet store regulating dog food as there were plenty of other flavors of dog food of the same brand and many other brands as well. After all, it is a pet supply store and a case is only 12 cans so I wasn't trying to buy half the store. It's not as if there's a shortage of bottled water and toilet paper at the grocery store where it needs to be regulated because of hoarders. As you might expect I won't be returning to this small pet store on Point Loma that doesn't seem to be very business savvy. Based on the reviews if they keep it up they won't be. read more

This place is a gem. They have lots of treats for my puppy that are NOT rawhide. Bully sticks, windee rings, everything -- you name it, they have it. They are known for their wide assortment of raw food; our friends purchase from here for their Boston Terrier and love it.
