The review I left with consumer affairs. I have a golden doodle that looked like a teddy. While checking in, I noticed a groomer be rude to one of the dogs she was grooming. Lucky me, that was my dog's groomer, (Petco in south Tampa). I had told her what I wanted, which was a trim and for him to still look like a teddy. It was his first grooming experience. She told me that his fur is knotted and that she can't brush it but that she had to cut it short, and that she would leave his tail and face looking like a teddy. She was very condescending during our conversation, and the other groomers could tell she was agitated with me and refused to do the cut I requested. I told her what I wanted. 4+hr later, his fur completely shaved off. The fur on top of his head was so uneven. My pup was acting like if he was treated badly and was lethargic the entire ride home and the rest of the night. Even my friend noticed how he wasn't acting like his usual self. He was quiet and he was covering his face. Doodles are known for being very happy and loving. They act like humans sometimes which makes it easy to read their body language. These groomers need to be taught how to be respectful to the customers and to the dogs. I know for a fact, she purposely and maliciously shaved my dog's entire fur off because of our drop off interaction. She's lucky I didn't make a huge scene when I picked up my dog. He was unrecognizable!! I even said "THAT's MY DOG!????? Are you sure!! He looks like a rat! I attached the before and after photos. NEVER AGAIN! She needs some better training. She shouldn't be working with dogs until she has completed proper customer interaction classes and dog care. read more

I had to return a dog costume that I ordered online because it was way smaller than the size listed online. I had used my $5 reward on the order for 3 items. I paid $17 for the item including tax and was only given a credit of $15, when I went back to the register to point out the error, the manager and another staff member told me that they knew it didn't seem right, but that was the policy, the $5 reward was split between the 3 items & I would lose the $2 applied toward the item returned. I called Petco to complain about this policy and was told that this was not the correct way to handle the credit. The rep on the phone re-applied the entire $5 reward for my inconvenience (even when I told her I only expected the $2). THIS is the way to treat your customers ! I will never go back to this store on S. Westshore Blvd. There are too many other Petco's in the area that will take care of me properly. read more

My husband and I found ourselves at Petco when we were puppy sitting our furry friend, Kaiser. Kaiser's owner forgot to pack toys for his visit so we decided to purchase a few puppy toys so that we could play fetch and tug of war. The store was very clean and organized and carried a huge selection of dog toys as well as food, grooming tools and any other thing you would need for a pet. Unfortunately, we weren't impressed with Petco's marked up prices. I've seen coupons in the mail and newspaper in the past, but we don't clip them since we are not pet owners. We went to a smaller pet store nearby and found many of the same toys that Petco carried for at least $1 cheaper! The cashier at Petco was super nice and even gave our puppy a treat so overall it was a good experience, but there are cheaper pet stores in Tampa. read more

I went here for the first time in a long time due to the Petco near me not selling aquarium fish at the moment, I waited in the fish section for 20 minutes before someone finally saw me standing there and asked me if I needed help and it was one of the dog trainers, the girl working in the fish section walked to the fish section, saw me, turned on the light in a tank and the. Walked in a back room, other than that, the women who found me help and the guy who got the fish for me were very nice and pleasant. I will also say that for a Saturday and it being a large store I only saw maybe 4 employees. So they may just need more staff. read more

The lady who I could barely understand said it was cancelled due to the l store inventory was incorrect but I could replace the same order and have it delivered at a later date. When I asked about the discount that was on the order I was told the promotion had ended and there was nothing that could be done. One of the first things I look for, besides a barber and a Target, whenever I move to a new city is a pet store. In my previous location, a huge and amazing store was around the corner and my furry buddy loved going shopping with me. My first day in Tampa I took to Yelp and located Petco. For being near the intersection of 2 major throroughfares, I found the store to be pretty small compared to otyhers, and lacking in parking. There are a few larger stores anchoring this strip mall, along with ofice buildings around, which contribute to the parking shortgage. In addition, the directional flow of hte parking lot can make it a bit of a challenge to exit, especially when traffic on Westshore begins to back up. The other issue in this store has been a lack of merchandise. On more than one occasion, the store has been out of either the size, or the variety of my dog's particular brand of kibble. It may not seem like a big deal, but any pet owner knows if you try to feed your dog something he's not used to, it can lead to some severe plumbing issues. This was compounded by the gentleman on the floor advising me "whats out there is what we have" without looking up at me or offering to check the back. At $20 for a 6 lb bag, I would have hoped for a bit more customer service. Conversely, the check out staff has always been all smiles, courteous, and efficient. You can tel they have a love for pets and offer my pup a treat each time he accompanies me. Due to the proximity, I'll probably keep shopping at this particular store. That being said, the aforementioned issues have had me longing for my old pet store a time or two. read more

This is my GO TO store for all of our pet needs. This place has EVERYTHING and by continuing to buy, we get rewards money to use here all the time now! Blueberry and I have been loyal customer of theirs since she was a puppy and this is my main place to go for pet supplies. (She's 7 now.) The store is always clean and they are always well stocked with everything I need with the occasional sale on Greenies and her dog food. This is always where she also gets groomed every three months and they are familiar with her here. Conveniently located in the small plazas of two places which I frequent, its easy to get errands done and have her groomed or drive on the way here to pick her up and go somewhere in the vicinity. I was given a refund for grooming by bobby and another nice manager which made a diff even though Im worried her hair wont grow back the same on her head it was her unique aspect. HOWEVER, DANNY at the register was a completely rude A hole for no reason! Huffing and puffing about its not on the receipt? Getting it confused with a item I brought back with no receipt. After explaining again he says 'well you didn't say that' then a manager helps him after its all done I asked if my grooming was put back on my card and he gets more frustrated and said 'No you didnt say that! Seriously? I had the receipt with grooming written in it and "give refund" with the managers name. So I had a refund w/receipt for grooming and a return w/o receipt how hard was that? I then asked if he charged me for the dog chew I had on the counter and he says No! The manager turned around and said take it for waiting so long on me. Absolutely disgraceful. Brought our little American Eskimo there for grooming. We were assured they knew this was simply a clean up. We left our beautiful little bunny-coated girl there and got back a baby lamb. The "groomer" shorn her full soft fur/mane down to the skin leaving her unrecognizable with choppy uneven fur. When we got her home, she barely left my side she was so shaken. The skill level of this groomer scarcely exceeds "turn on trimmers and have at it". Also, to perform this outrageous hack job, it took him 4 hours. The upside was that the Manager was very nice and did not charge us. Steer clear of grooming services!!! read more

This review is for the grooming department. We have always taken our dogs (two cavaliers) to petco to get them groomed, so when we moved here I looked up the closest petco hoping they would be good. They were awesome. Pretty sure the lady we saw was Ivy? I will update with a correct name. She was SO SWEET and treated our little babies with the same love as the last petco. I definitely recommend going here for grooming! However I must admit the shopping portion isn't that great, pretty small....but once again in this half of the store as well the staff is so nice and so helpful. read more

If you need to book, reschedule, ask a question, they don't answer their phones. Super frustrating. I called, every 5 minutes for an hour once JUST TO SEEEEE and no one ever picked up. Last grooming service, my dog came home looking almost exactly the same, but they don't pick up the phone, so I couldn't reach anyone to book an appointment to have it fixed! This morning, my poor puppy had a mat around his bum and I had to comb out the you know what... We're still two weeks away from our regular grooming visit, so it's even more apparent that he wasn't groomed well enough to last his 6 weeks. Couldn't get through yesterday, couldn't get through today... I had to call customer service to walk over to the grooming salon to cancel my appointments... Dishonest Ads. High Prices. Uncaring Management... I visited the store and they have several signs in the store that say, "PRICE MATCH GUARANTEE: If you find a better price ANYWHERE, we'll match it!" There isn't any fine print that disqualifies anything from being matchable. Their items are typically priced a little higher than elsewhere, but I was surprised that their dog tooth cleaning foam was 300% higher in their store than what I could get it from Amazon. When I asked for a price match, I was told by the Store Manager that they wouldn't match anything on the Internet. I pointed out that there was no disclaimer on the multitude of signs around the store but he didn't seem to care. This is not the first time I've found higher priced items in this store. I recommend Petsmart since they have better prices and their managers actually seem to care about their customers. read more

Took my puppy (long hair shihpoo) to get groomed here. The women Amber felt my dogs fur and told me he was completely matted and had so many knots and kept telling me I had to shave my dog. When I told her I did not want that service done she then told me she was either going to charge me $7 per minute she had to brush him, or I was going to have to buy a Spa package. I then agreed to the spa package and informed her Id be waiting for my dog and she told me it would take up to 3 hours!!! After an hour of roaming their unkept store i recieved a call that my dog is too matted for her to work on and either she had to shave him or was refusing to continue service on my dog. First of all my dog is not matted the way she described and she brushed him for over an hour while I waited and he came out of the grooming center full of drool and trembling. Second of all the dog has a curly thick long fur which just needed a simple wash and cut. Lastly when she gave me no other option than to shave my 7 month old puppy i went and got him and left. During the hour that he was in there I kept trying to look through the window to keep an eye out on him and the staff just kept looking at me, and they were brushing my dog out in and area out of view from the window. Very disappointing and unprofessional. Will NOT be back and will not be recommending to any of my fellow dog owners. I went to petco specifically because I already had a bad experience with a groomer and was recommened to go there for a quality wash and cut, I also explained this to Amber and she constiently just kept coming at me about shaving my puppy. I booked an appointment for both of my dogs to get a nail trim and once I showed up one groomer checked my dogs in and said I was good; then the other denied them. I drove 40 minutes to this appointment because every other place is closed. I brought in their rabies paper work, but because their paper expired 2 days ago they refused my dogs after saying they were ok. They wouldn't even do anything for my dogs after I explained to them that I cannot get into my vet for a month. One of the women gave me a coupon but said I cannot use it on their nails - so that was a waste of a trip. Safe to say I will NEVER use them again. I will most definitely stick to my FAVORITE groomers on South Howard at GreenDog Wash for now on once they open back up! read more

It's always nice to come here. The only thing to note is that regardless of which pet store I go to there is always an animal in the glass cages that is in distress. When you mention it to a staff member they brush it off like "Oh its fine. they do this or act like that all the time". Well, maybe they shouldnt be acting or doing something like that and maybe it's not their fault but yours for neglecting them. It seems to be the little ones that suffer from this kind of apathy the most: gerbils, hamsters, mice and the like. It should be part of an hourly store sweep to note if they need more water, food, toy pick up etc. read more

The sole reason I come to Petco is because they are the only pet store that carries the brand Solid Gold (my main homie's meal of course). Everyone has always been super helpful and the store has always been clean when I've visited. I love the wide variety of treats and they have a great selection of all natural/organic treats! DO. NOT. TAKE. YOUR. DOG. HERE. I took my pomeranian here to be groomed because my normal groomer is usually booked 2 weeks in advance and I forgot to book. Anyway, I told them puppy cut, and literally all they did was shave him. It's not even even. There are patches that are longer than the rest, the face is not round at all and completely uneven, and he has a matt behind his ear?? He obviously wasn't brushed out either because when i picked him up, SO MUCH hair came off of him. I also paid $10 to get his teeth brushed, and i'm almost 100% confident that they didn't. This is my go to pet store. They always have what my dog wants and needs. The grooming is ok. They seems to be able to take me on short notice often and have a female to handle my dog. But I dont like how long it takes or that he goes in a cage. I've found a groomer close to my new home that doesnt use cages for the same price it's far less stressful for my high anxiety pup. read more

Took my precious pup here for some early evening pampering and the staff was quite helpful. The groomer (forgot her name, but has been there for 5 years and was working today (12/2)) was friendly, helpful and took amazing care of my dog. My dog actually enjoyed her as well. Normally she is not a fan of the corporate owned groomers, but I could tell she felt very comfortable with the staff at this location. I'll definitely go back in the future (if I can't find a small business to take her though - sorry guys, I have to support the little guy first)! Btw - the PRICES WERE PRIMO!!!! I've had several negative experiences with the groomers, so I won't be returning. The first was with my Boston terrier that I took there to have her anal glands expressed (as they advertise). Turns out they don't actually express them from the inside (sorry for the detail!) like they're supposed to - they just pinch the outside WHICH IS NOT SUFFICIENT especially if your dog has issues with rupturing. I didn't find that out until the second time I took her. You'd think they'd disclose that right??? The second was with my white dog that I took there to be bathed and nails trimmed. When I picked her up she still had dirt on her coat, stunk, and they only trimmed the nails on three of her four feet (they have four feet petco!). The last was my sister's dog, that's a small terrier. According to the groomer he got agitated when she put the clippers around his rear end. Because of this she immediately stopped grooming him and just threw him in the cage and called my sister to pick him up saying he was aggressive. She refused to touch him again because "he needed time to calm down". When my sister got there he seemed happy as ever, with no agitation. Here's the kicker: the groomer told my sister that he must have reacted that way "BECAUSE HE PROBABLY HAS A STRESSFUL HOME LIFE". Huh??? Come again???! Who says that????! This dog is not aggressive and has been groomed many times before. Instead of taking responsibility for whatever she did (touched the wrong spot with the clippers perhaps?) she blamed my sister and made false allegations about his home life and how he's kept. Please avoid the groomers here. The girl I've had ALL of these problems with is short, heavier weight, and dark curly hair (usually pulled up). read more
