I started shopping at Petco years ago when I learned Petsmart banned "pit bull type" dogs from their training programs. I have an APBT and a toy poodle. I'm not spending my money at a store that doesn't support my breed of dog. All has been well until today for the most part. Due to this COVID mess, everyone has been effected in many different ways, which I totally emphasize with. That is why the FIRST time the grooming Dept called me and said they had to rebook my toy poodle due to over booking, I was understanding. That was 3.5 weeks ago from the date of this post. I originally request an appointment in May, was scheduled for June, then that appointment was rebooked you today's situation. Today, I received a call from the grooming department and YET AGAIN, they need to reschedule my grooming appointment but this time it's because "Sarah" wasn't going to be able to come in. Did they offer to work him in sometime in the next week? No. Did they offer any type of solution other than offering to rebook another appointment for almost 3 weeks out? NO. My puppy, who is now 8 months old, needs a grooming badly. I have been bathing him and trimming the hair from his eyes and even shaved him once. I spend at least $200-$250 a month between food, grooming, treats and toys for my 3 animals. That's about $2400 a year. Which may not be much to some and isn't the point of my complaint, I only brought it up to point out that people choose Petco for a reason. My reason was customer service, convenience, and availability of products. After being forced to rescheduled twice, its no longer convenient and clearly the customer service is lacking. It would have been acceptable if the next reschedule dates weren't 3-4 weeks out. So if I chose to reschedule his appointment again, it would have been almost 10 weeks since my original request for grooming. How is that acceptable to Petco? I have a toy poodle puppy who needs to be exposed to grooming before he turns into a total nightmare when he finally does get groomed. Unfortunately I can't keep participating in these games Petco wants to play and being inconvenienced because they can't get people to show up for work or over book them.

We sent our pit bull, Ollie, there and we are happy to report that he is now the best boy. We…read morerescued him from the shelter in 2018 and we quickly saw that we had some work to do. He pulled on the leash, barked at the door, and had bouts of aggression when he didn't get his way. I felt uneasy having guests over because I felt like I had no control over my dog. Basically, my dog owned me.. not vis versa. He did ~2 weeks of the board and train program at SMS Raleigh and even though we were nervous to send him away (it felt like forever!), we loved getting bi-weekly updates from his trainer and seeing his progress. Training Ollie will always be a work in progress but the biggest different we have seen is that HE LISTENS! Hallelujah. My friends come over and say they see a huge difference in him - he's calm, sweet, and charming. He is still a dog.. he does bark at the mailman, and sometimes pulls on the leash, but if we correct him, he is happy to obey. I also love the fact that we have free access to the group classes 2x a week and have the opportunity to continue training him. Overall, we are very happy with his progress and we are dedicated to continue training him with the SMS methods.

Colby the owner explained it best to me when he said "It's not about punishment, it's about attention and boundaries. Dogs want to please their owners, so once you have their attention their instinct takes over and training becomes easier. The strides and response to this training are remarkable. So pleased with the results so far. I am happy and more importantly my dog is happy. We have only had 3 private whole day training sessions, and tonight we will attend our first group training. Looking forward to this as it can only help build on the foundation established in the private 3 lessons. The training is not inexpensive, however it cheaper than replacing carpet not to mention several pairs of shoes, baseboards ETC. I recommend sitting down with Colby or any of the other trainers and let them explain why this works. You won't have any regrets. Rick W

We agreed the "Fearful Fido" class would help him- I went ahead and registered him and paid in full- $335 . Next month when the class was to start- she emailed me the day before to cancel saying not enough people signed up. She said I would receive a refund in 3-5 business days. This was May 5- by May 14 no refund showing so I emailed to remind her- she said she would check- she got confused about which class I had enrolled in and said she did not see an email about a refund. I reminded her of the class and that she has canceled because there were not enough participants. She emailed back she was on the road and may have looked at the wrong invoice. She would check on it that evening. ..... crickets.... I emailed her again on May 20- to remind her again and she replied she resent the request. Sure enough it appeared next day in my bank but for only $325. I emailed her asking why I had to pay $10 when she canceled the class? She told me, "Laura , Paypal business accounts hit me for a fee for every payment and refund. I requested refund. They refunded you the amount minus what they charged me. As a merchant we pay a lot to have a business." Needless to say passing your mistakes and costs along to customers will cost you business- I will never use her services and suggest you don't either unless you are ok with donating your $.

We were pretty shocked by several businesses that recommended shock collars and prong collars for our pup who was already calm and submissive. When we met with Christie, it was refreshing to learn about her positive and praise-focused approach to training-- and in our consultation session alone she taught Mirabel (and our family) how to walk properly with a leash and the sit command. The entire first visit was based on patience, building trust with our pup, and enjoying the time we spent training. We've taken several classes with Christie since, and every single one is based on the same approach that she introduced on Day 1. The classes are FUN and a great opportunity to meet other pets and their parents in a safe and welcoming environment. I hope Mirabel and I meet you and your pup soon!

What is more disheartening is the owner who is certified to train isn't there most of the time. So she's allowing the inmates to run the asylum. The group classes are run half assed. One training class I audited the trainer and the clients sat the whole time! How do they think training is happening by sitting! And the trainer was pontificating about nothing and eating the the cheese that was meant for the dogs. There was no education of how dogs learn, how many times you use a dog's name or how many times you issue commands. The poor people are NOT getting their moneys worth. Dog training should be taught by Certified Pet Dog Trainer (CPTD). Unfortunately the owner of this facility has decided money is more important than doing right by the people and their dogs!

I wanted an introductory training class that wasn't at PetSmart, so I tried it when Riley was about 16 weeks old. Riley and I did the 7-week Puppy Class (Positive Socialization and Introduction to Basic Manners) with Christie. There were four puppies total in the class, so I loved the attention we each received in our hour. Christie is a great trainer. She is very knowledgable and helped me get a new harness to walk Riley that would allow me to control her more. Of course, she is patient with the pups (and the humans). I wanted to continue bringing Riley to classes there (Puppy Agility, and Canine Good Citizen), but (1) you cannot miss a class and as the summer came, that became hard to schedule, (2) I moved to Durham, so I was no longer close to Capital Blvd., and (3) I started law school. I would recommend Teamworks to anyone. I attribute Riley's good manners and attention skills to her solid base training. I also gained confidence by training her, which was good!

I typically groom my own fur daughter, as the wait in our previous city could be in excess of three months wait time. The groomer did a normal shave down with poofing her head and tail. Nothing special. Her ears were also shaved off. Typically groomers can work out the curls on the ears as our girl has extremely curly fur that often gets tangled. A fifty dollar extra charge for "de-matting" was interesting as she shaved our dog down. Shaving doesn't require de-matting. I could do the same cut at home and often poodle owners shave their dogs down, no "de-matting" necessary. Lastly, the groomer mentioned her inner ears needing to be cut or plucked because they can cause issues. First time I've ever had a groomer mention this. Noted, no vet ever mentioned this being an issue. So, we asked our vet, and they stated that if a dog isn't having issues, then it's best to leave the inner ears alone, as it can cause issues from groomers cutting or plucking their ears. $233.64 dollar charge for this grooming in a little town called Wake Forest. Atlanta and Dallas did a better job and charged less for a superior groom. Needless to say, I will not be going back for grooming here.

We were concerned about how best to care for our pup, especially as first-time dog owners. We can't say enough positive things about Angel. To begin with, she listened to each of our concerns (we had many) before we even hired her and shared her thoughts on how she would tackle the training. We were impressed that she truly took the time to listen and understand our questions, and we decided to hire her. Our first training session was over video chat due to the pandemic. We went over the allotted time because Angel was so thorough in discussing the training plan with us. We learned a lot about how to care for our dog in general (e.g. body language, assessing comfort level, when to seek support from vet for behavioral issues). The main takeaway from this training session were detailed, step-by-step methods for addressing several of our dog's behaviors. Angel's main focus was getting to the root of the behaviors, our dog's emotions, and making sure that he was confident and comfortable. All of the training was based on positive reinforcement. The second part of our training session was an outdoor in-person meeting (socially distant, masked) at a park with the purpose of learning how to desensitize our dog around other dogs. Unfortunately, when we arrived Angel realized that our dog's baseline anxiety level was still too high to successfully begin the desensitization training. We still completed that hour meeting to practice other training, and Angel offered to meet us for a second in-person meeting, free of charge, in a few weeks to try desensitization training again. The techniques that Angel has taught us have led to noticeable positive changes in our dog. We are continuing to utilize what she taught us and, overall, feel that we are better equipped to be good dog owners.
