I have gone to a "vaccine clinic" in the past at Petco where they send a vet in and they provide vaccinations at low prices and I have bought things on the visit because the convenience. VETCO now has a very misleading practice of saying they have a vaccine clinic but in actuality that isn't what it is anymore. It's just them giving vaccines and charging the same prices as vets do without actually doing an exam. I got two vaccines and the price was $115. Looked at a receipt from VETCO 2 years ago and my dog got multiple vaccines, a heart worm test, a mini exam AND heartworm treatment for the exact same price at their vaccine clinic day. They were much more transparent about their pricing whereas now they say it's a vaccine clinic but they pulled a switch and now just label it that way without disclosing prices. My fault for not confirming beforehand but will just go to actual vets going forward. read more

I'm not sure if they hire people who don't know English or if they just hire people who are rude but it clearly is a problem. They have fish eating each other and employees who like I said ignore you, or they treat you like a complete idiot for wanting to buy a certain animal such as a snail or shrimp. I was denied sale of a shrimp from a know it all employee who claimed I needed to have had a tank for a whole six months before I could buy a shrimp, well I didn't listen and bought a shrimp from petsmart instead and that shrimp is still alive to this day and has been alive for months now. read more

I needed a rabies vaccination for my dog asap and was able to get a same day appointment! Easily booked through their website. I got there, and parking was easy in their lot. The store isn't super noticeable from California blvd. The vet clinic waiting area is small, I checked in for my appointment and there were 4 other people waiting to be seen. There's one small bench that fits two people, every one else was either sitting on the ground or standing, waiting to be seen. I waited about 20 mins and my dog was in and out in 5 mins. It has apparently been a few years since I dropped into this Petco (I always love reading my old reviews from when I had pets). Downtown this weekend, we stopped in to buy gifts for my sister in law's four footed family. We browsed, having a bit of trouble due to the poor signage for the aisles, then finally got in line to pay. The cashier called us up and asked for our phone number and I said I didn't have an account with them. She offered to create one for me, I said no thank you they were gifts, she then asked for the phone number of the people receiving the gifts. Taken aback I said no thank you, that's fine. From there her additude was palpable. Wrapping up our purchase I wished her a nice day and got silence in return. The vibes were so bad that my husband mentioned it when we got out of the store. I later googled it online and found out Petco employees are heavily encouraged to push signing up for rewards and generally want 100% of a cashier's purchases tied to a phone number. Yikes. Brought my five and three year-old here to pick out a new fish for their 10 gallon fish tank. No one greeted me. We waited in the aquatic section admiring the dead fish that were floating. When I looked for help both cashiers who were both apparently manager and assistant manager(on there phones standing behind counter) , said they might be able to help me. when I told her what fish we wanted, she said I was unable to purchase without a tank sample. I was a bit taken back as this has never been the case in the past- had her attitude not been so foul I would've simply said I understand why you're asking, but she was so nasty and you could tell she was just having a bad day. I recently adopted a kitten from my local shelter and saw that the Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital located within this Petco location was promoting free first visits for new customers so I scheduled an appointment at the Walnut Creek clinic as it was the closest location to me. I booked for a Saturday because I work full time during the week and the soonest appointment was a few weeks out from the time that I booked. I arrived to the appointment today as scheduled and was running a few minutes late due to traffic and tried calling and texting the clinic to give a courtesy call and nobody would answer after multiple attempts. Once I arrived the door was locked and the lights were off so I walked into Petco and asked an employee what was going on. They informed me that the clinic had closed due to a water leak that occurred TWO WEEKS AGO with no estimated renovation date. Nobody from the clinic bothered to call me to cancel my appointment in advance along with many other customers according to the employee I spoke with. I was particularly frustrated because this was a major inconvenience as I was coming from San Leandro. Calling to cancel was the very least they could've done and should've been the clinics top priority. I was extremely disappointed with the lack of communication and transparency. If they are unable to do something as simple as cancel an appointment, I am doubtful they are capable of providing my pet with quality care. If you do decide to book at this clinic please note they lack basic communication skills. read more

Smaller Petco location with many of the small pet products out of stock. Poor customer service, no one available to help/ greet you upon entering. Service: One person was on the floor and two cashiering. Upon entering, no welcome or hi can I help you. Just the very bored look and I want to go home expression. There was an employee by small pets but, didn't seem interested in helping me find items, just doing cleaning and restocking and then leaving the area. Parking/ location: Parking is quit difficult with only about a few spots that are close to this store, the rest are taken up by other surrounding businesses. The location is about 10 minutes from downtown, but on a busy street right on S California Blvd. Overall, a not so friendly store with many products being out of stock and difficult parking. read more

Now they won't sell you goldfish - I'm done. Goodbye Petco. This is the second time I've visited this store to buy fish. This time, I was looking for goldfish "feeder" fish, and once again, a younger employee questioned the suitability of my tanks (20-gallon and 30-gallon) for goldfish. I've been caring for fish for over 35 years, so having someone younger than me dictate what I can or cannot do with fish is quite frustrating. Ironically, most of the fish at Petco often appear unhealthy and don't last long. I've had no issues when purchasing fish online. Petco's fish often have a short lifespan. Regrettably, Petco, you've lost a loyal customer who owns three cats, a guinea pig, two parakeets, and three fish tanks. I suggest treating your customers with respect and focusing on providing a positive shopping experience rather than giving them the third degree. read more

My family has been a Petco member for at least 17 years Although I will continue to give some of my business to Petco in other areas, I will NEVER shop at the Alameda location. I bought a Christmas theme outfit ($15.00) for my dog but wasn't sure if I would be able to put it on him so i expressed my concern about that. Sales lady said don't worry, you can bring it back up to 2 years, no tags and no receipt. It's our policy. I live in Walnut Creek so the next time I was in alameda (April) I returned it. Salesperson would NOT take it back so I asked for the manager and she also would NOT take it back. She said our policy is on the back of the receipt. Really, who reads the back of the receipt after the sales lady just told me that I have 2 years to return the item? I returned it w the tag and with the receipt, not worn. My dog just refused for me to put it on him but since she told me 2 years, I didn't rush it since I don't live in the area. What used to be a friendly, small location before the pandemic is now an unfriendly and half empty store : ( Gone is the great customer service at the register and on the floor. Gone are the items that always used to be in stock (they can now be found at the new and bigger Petco in The Orchards on Ygnacio Valley Road). Gone are the many customers shopping in store. Online orders seem not make it to the on-store pick up area and the sole employee at the front doesn't appear to know or to care about their whereabouts. Well, it has been just horrible. Basically, I had an appointment for my dog to get groomed and it got canceled because Charlie broke her hand they did call me to let me know that she could not take my dog but they didn't cancel my appointment so I thought it was still good and I wanted to do a short style haircut so I thought any groomer could do it (WRONG!!!!) I woke up at 7 am to take my dog to walnut creek because I live in Oakland and I have been going to the store for over a year Charlie is the best, the rest of the groomer not so much. Anyhow, I got there and I went back home they canceled my appointment I didn't know, I spoke to the store manager and he told me that they will take my dog as soon as possible (he offered a free haircut I think that's why they f@cked up my dog) so I came home, they called a couple of days later if I want to bring my dog on Friday then I said yes! Well, they keep my dog for over 4 hrs without water and they didn't bother to call me to pick up my dog which shows how professional and how much they care about animals my husband picked my dog up but when I got home I saw the horrible job the guy did you my dog. He didn't give a flying F@ck about what I told him that I wanted My dog looks like, it got groomed by someone with a week of experience and I also know that the groomers marked me as difficult for trying to make sure that they could be as great as Charlie but anyone could tell on their faces and how they treated us. This is the only place I take my beloved C.C. for bathing and nail trimming. Catalina is C.C.'s special friend here. She always makes me feel that she is happy to see C.C. and cares for her with kindness and love. They're thoughtful, caring, and my girl always comes away from her bath silky smooth and smelling lovely. Just the other day, Catalina noticed swelling under my girl's eye which I hadn't noticed. It turned out to be an abscess from an infected tooth root; no doubt extremely painful! Thanks to Catalina's caring attention it was seen. We went to the emergency vet on Friday and on Monday we have an early morning appointment. My poor C.C. has been in pain for who knows how long! Thanks Catalina! Wonderful job bathing our dog! He was so soft and clean feeling afterward, and the staff made him feel very comfortable even though he was nervous at first. The only reason I'm giving 4/5 stars is because Haylee at the front desk in the grooming section was very rude and condescending in her tone upon arrival and did not offer any immediate suggestions or solutions to my questions. Not a great first impression on her end, but luckily when we picked up our dog, Erica had very helpful and friendly service and was redeeming of the customer experience. read more

This review is for the grooming salon. I tried calling about three times in three different time slots and unfortunately I could not get through. I finally showed up at the store today and saw that there was someone there at the counter. I explained that I was having an issue with my dogs nails getting caught on everything and she couldn't walk right and unfortunately he let me know that they didn't have any time today due to appointments even with the situation. I even heard one of the groomers go 'no' from the back. I found another petco grooming salon and when I walked in and explained the same situation, they were more than happy to fit her in, even with them being booked because it literally took them 4 minutes. I appreciate the amazing customer service from the other petco groomer, but definitely will not be coming back to this one. read more

Well I'm very disappointed to walk in and see so many animals living in filth and looking sick. I buy dog food here all the time but today I was just taking a walk and decided to kill some time and look around at the animals. I noticed the guinea pigs were bald and had feces all over their enclosure even in food bowls. This was not one day of poop either this habit had not been cleaned in a very long time.Guinea pigs are not hairless nor do they shed this badly unless they have some sort of dietary or genetic issues. Then I turn around to see the birds and same thing filthy enclosures the poor things looked like they're so stressed out they are plucking they're own feathers. Birds are social animals yet they have most of them separated. But my biggest concern is that this place is neglecting the care of these animals. I believe it is probably due to understaffing the employees. They do not have enough to keep up. This is not right and I'll be reporting to animal services as well. This review is entirely based on my experience at the grooming salon with Haylee and the front desk lady today. I made an appointment for a "Sanitary Trim" which as described on their website this is "A shave of the belly and around a dog's rear end to keep this area more sanitary" when I got there the appointment was apparently for ear cleaning. I explained to the front desk lady that I wanted a SANITARY TRIM, so Haylee who was the stylist assigned to my dog came out and I also explained to her that I wanted a sanitary trim so that Brooklyn's rear hairs would be trimmed. She said that the "Face, feet and fanny trim" would clean up the private areas and include nail cut and paws so I said ok. Once I picked up my dog her rear hairs were completely untouched! I asked Haylee about it and she said that in order for her to even cut any hairs I would have to pay for a full haircut which I don't need because my puppy doesn't have a full coat yet! At the end I just left frustrated because I paid for something I didn't want due to the lack of knowledge of the personnel at this location. Needless to say I won't be coming back to this location again. read more
