I will never take my pup back here again. She lost a tremendous amount of weight and was clear had been under a significant amount of stress while gone out of town for few days. Four days later, after pickup, and she still has diarrhea. That's including bringing her own, regular food. For the boarding fees and location, I would have expected a better experience all around, with the "gold" treatment; instead, I'm feeling terribly guilty for having left my dog at what must have been a horrible experience for the dog and taking her to the vet for a checkup. I could understand how my former shepherd would probably have had an issue with boarding, but a lab? Something is off with Canyonwyck Kennels. Heed the reviews, even if 6-7 years old- they're still valid. read more

Do not bring your cats here. They have dogs that are constantly barking and its very stressful for the cats. Cats in their cages are always hiding and scared from the noise. It's not a good environment for cats. I would come to visit my cats everyday so I could pets them, give them treats and check on them, etc but they are closed on weekends so I couldn't come on Saturday or Sunday. Really annoying. Also when you drive up the dogs begin barking non stop. It's awful. More stress for the cats. Also they may feed the cats but they don't make sure the cats eat. I asked them and they always say everything is ok. But they don't know. They don't check. My cat ended up dying after being here. She was so stressed that she never ate. She got anorexic from not eating and died from fatty liver disease. Once they stop eating it's hard to get them to eat. I didn't know until I took her to the vet. She lost 6 lbs. that's so much weight for a cat. They charge too much for bad care. I wish I would have known all this before I brought my cats here. I NEVER would have brought them here. I only gave them one star because you have to at least have one to do the review. read more

We have done long-term boarding with Canyonwyck several times now. Definitely enough to get a good sense of what pet life is all about there. Let's start with the positives. The facility appears to have a lot of space and they have plenty of options for food, playtime, and extras. The baths we have gotten from them at the end of the stay always come out pretty good. That's about where the good ends, though. Our girl has always come back to us sick with a notable amount down on weight and has included diarrhea and vomiting. This has happened on occasions when we've used their food and brought our own. She has also come back with a lot of sores and calluses on her legs. I suspect it's from a lot of sitting on concrete, which she shouldn't be because we pay extra for the play times. They have plenty of extra beds to spare, so throw another one in there possibly? Whatever the case is, she' definitely not in a condition I would consider good when picked up. If this only happened once or twice, I'd ignore it, but it's been a consistent problem with all of our visits. Our bills have generally been large due to the time and extras we throw in. You'd expect them to take credit. Nope. Make sure you have your cash on hand. I get they're a small business and there are fees associated with that kind of thing, but sorry, that's just how modern commerce works. In general, most businesses give that option. Prices are of the premium type, which would be fine except I don't feel like you get premium care there. The cost doesn't match the service. When I brought up these issues with the managers, I got varying responses. Most of them came back to, "Well, it's always worked like this." In fact, I would say there was a general lack of empathy, willingness to hear (let alone accept) any critical feedback, and lack of responsibility. These aren't attributes you want from people who are tasked to take care of your fur babies. Fair enough, though. I gave it a good shot with Canyonwyck, which is obvious by the amount of times we've used them. I wont be going back. I don't like giving negative reviews, but in this case, I think it's deserved. read more

Be careful folks. My pet was there for two weeks. When I picked him up, I realized he had lost 21% of his weight and had several sores on his legs. He was also lethargic and didn't want to eat. Did I mention my pet is a Lab? Well, if you are not aware about labs, they always want to eat. That really sums it up. Just a very unhealthy environment. They're okay. I've boarded my dog there a few times when I first moved to the area and lived briefly in Walnut Creek. I boarded my dog and cat there for 3 weeks when I went to Europe, and they came back unscathed. I probably would've given them 1 more star, except that every single time I have gone there or called, the women who work there have always been cold, disinterested, and unfriendly. They're not outrightly rude or anything but just act like they could give a sh&* less, which puts me a little off (and I'm not the overly chatty-annoying-overly-demanding type of patron, either). I just would like a little eye contact or a tiny hint of a smile when I say Hello, maybe, at least. I take my dog to Citizen Canine now, and we're all much happier with the service there. read more

I've been taking my dog here for about a year now. They always have room for him and are very good with him. He used to go to Club K9, but he is an older Shar Pei and doesn't seem to like to socialize as much as did as a younger dog. He hasn't had any problems with this place and he likes it there. Sent my 2 dogs here for the first time during the first week of March. They obviously know what they're doing, as far as handling the dogs. I have no complaints. They bathed them for me and returned them with bows tied around their necks. If I have to board my dogs in the future, I'll most likely give them a call. If you want them bathed, they'll charge you for the bath and not charge you for that day's boarding, which is nice. read more

Our first time leaving our yellow lab puppy, Hank, was with Canyonwyck and we were nervous to leave him. There was nothing to worry about! Hank had a great time and we got to see a sweet picture of him on their Facebook page while we were away. When we came to pick him up, they remembered by husband as Hank's dad when they saw him - which was great. They really care about the dogs left in their care and it shows. Dropped my GSD off here for the first time in late June. He had never been to a kennel before, so I was apprehensive. He can be pretty alpha. I was so happy to find out that he did just fine and wasn't aggressive at all! Also, I was able to see his photo on their Facebook page. He was freshly washed when I picked him up. I have taken all of my dogs here for training and kenneling for over 15 years. Never have I had a bad experience. They are so comfortable . Wag their tails when I pull up. The staff really cares about all the animals and have tons of experience. They make sure that all pets are up to speed on their shots and will administer medication if need be. When they groom my dogs they are so beautiful. They do do the play time, pool time, and I am so lucky to have them near my house. They care. Don't hesitate. read more

I recently left our dog there while we were on vacation. It seems like a nice Kennel and the empoyees treat the dogs well. The only problem I had was that they don't accept credit cards. For a business that isn't cheap (our bill came to around 200.00), I think it is VERY important that they accept some form of credit or debit cards. Most people these days don't carry large amounts of cash or checks. I went to pick up my dog, and then had to get back into my car and drive to an ATM (I couldn't find my bank, so I went to another one) and withdrawl a few hundred to pay our fee. I had planned on paying with a credit card, as we just got home from a big vacation and our account was looking a bit low. They have a small sign tacked to their counter that says "cash or checks only", so I should have noticed that when I dropped our dog off. The issue is that this is a very big inconvienence to the average person these days, where people use plastic to pay for everything. There really is no excuse for a company of this size to have a cash only policy. read more

I've taken my well-behaved, very sweet toy poodle to Cayonwyck for a number of years to be groomed. The last two times she was injured (cut badly in the anal area and on the back of her neck) and it took 6-8 weeks to heal. Adding insult to injury, they refused to brush out any knots inside her legs, instructing me to do so before bringing her in for grooming. read more

Canyonwyck is the most caring place I can think of to place your dog when you go away and feel total peace of mind. It is run by Maureen and Carol who adore dogs and live and breathe dogs. They care about your dog and pay wonderful attention to them. Usually it is very hard to get in here, so you have to reserve ahead of time. My husband and I are empty nesters, which means we have traveled more lately, and when I say to my dog "Let's go to Canyonwyck" she literally jumps in the car. And when we get there she runs into the office with no hesitations. I am sorry the other reviewer had a poor experience but see for yourself when you go out there. It is a wonderful place to take your dog. I have tried three other kennels in Contra Costa County and Canyonwyck is the bset. read more

Both of my dogs came out of this place with severe eye infections due to the filthy conditions. Both had yellow and green puss dripping out of their eyes when I picked them up and had to be taken to the vet for medications. Good thing I was only gone for a week or they could have gone blind from the infection! My dogs have never had any eye problems before being taken to this place. BEWARE, even if your dog is current on vaccinations, they can get sick here! Sounds great doesn't it? Boarding and training too. Well, after spending almost $200 on "training", there is no difference at all in my dogs training, in fact one of them seems to have actually forgotten what she already knew when I dropped her off here. Don't waste your money on "training" that your dogs will not receive. . and don't bother taking in your dogs nice soft dog bed for them to lay on instead of the filthy concrete floor, they never put them in with the dogs because "the dogs will tear them up". They say the beds are put in the kennels at night, don't be live it. My came back in the same freshly laundered condition smelling like my laundry soap and with the brand new stuffing still fluffy and obviously never ever slept on by my dogs. One of my dogs lost 10 pounds in a week and is now food aggressive. My dogs were kenneled together and I was told they would be fed apart as I requested, no way they were fed apart! One of them clearly had her food taken by the other all week. She is so thin that she looks terrible! I can't believe she lost this much weight in just a week!. It sure sounded like a great place for boarding, if only they actually did what they promised. The eye infections were over the top! If you care about your dog, don't leave them here. I adopted a young Rottie from a rescue and was told she was super mellow, well she's not! Ursa had health problems that no one new about for a while, once those were corrected she was like a rodeo bull on crack. Ursa became super dog aggressive when on leash. I tried three different training types with her to no avail. Carol Beasley was recommended by a friend and I couldn't be more thankful. Carol's methods are very gentle, working with positive reinforcement. Ursa has responded so well so quickly she is now in group classes and is doing great! read more

I am very very selective about who takes care of my beloved 7 yr old german Shepherd Maverick. I try to make arrangements for him to stay at our home when we leave town, but it is not always possible to do. I have boarded 2 other German Shepherds that I have owned over the last 14+ yrs now also & I have always felt so secure w/ the care that they receive there by Maureen & Carol. They are the owners and are also sisters. Carol & their mother actually reside there in a home right next to the boarding kennels. Someone is there all the time, even after they close their business day. These 2 women truly care about the animals & about the owners that they serve. It is more than "just a business" to them & it is very evident that they love what they do. They have been in business for 20+ yrs & they have always gone out of their way to do things for me & my pets that no other facility would ever do. Seven yrs ago I became very ill & was unexpectedly hospitalized for over a week. It was a time of yr when many people were taking vacations & boarding their animals. They were pretty limited in kennels available when my dog walker called them, telling them about my emergency situation & asked them on the spur of the moment if they could take my 2 big Shepherds in. They didn't even blink an eye & said that somehow they would accommodate my dogs & told her to reassure me that whatever length of time they needed to stay there would be ok. I can't tell you how relieved I was & how much this meant to me at this terrible time in my life. I recently went to FL & boarded Maverick there w/ a lick granuloma that had also just been biopsied w/ 10 stitches in the already traumatized wound on his foot. He ended up ruining the "hood" I left w/ them, which they tried not to use by bandaging his foot over and over again after he would bite it off during the nite in his kennel. They finally had to use it & by the time I returned a week later, Carol physically went into Lafayette to my vets at Four Seasons & bought 3 more for him (to replace the banged up ones he had from going in and out of the kennel door (inside to outside in the fresh air). She did not even charge me for the extra time and effort she made to do this for him- only charged me for what she had paid out of her own pocket to buy the other ones from the vet! I don't think they advertise much & on the outside it doesn't look super fancy, modern, etc. It is very ordinary looking but I promise you that the care your pet will get there is not "ordinary." This is the place you should go if you want to relax when you leave your best friend when you have to part ways for a short time. They have good common sense and are very educated women who are also certified in obedience training & obviously know quite a bit about first aid & taking care of animals who have special needs. I give them a five star rating without any hesitation at all. read more

Wow, I'm shocked to read this "horrible" review about Canyonwyck Kennels. I have had nothing but GREAT experiences with this Kennel (unlike others!) I got my Golden Retriever puppy 2 1/2 years ago and was looking for one-on-one training classes and was referred to Canyonwyck Kennels by a friend. She told me that Carol (one of the owners) had been working with dogs for over 25 years and was a VERY reputable dog handler as well as a VP of German Sheppard dog club outside of owning a kennel. I was pleased to hear my friend speak so highly of her. After speaking to Carol on the phone a bit and getting a sense of her unbelievable knowledge of dogs, I went to meet her myself. Although my intent was private lessons, I was given a full tour of the kennel both inside and out, the space provided for each individual dog is plenty, as they are able to run back and forth, inside out side all day long. They have their privacy from the dog kenneled next to them inside and are able to visit through a fence on the outside, (again plenty of space for them to run back and forth and be involved in all the daily activity of the business) I didn't see one "distressed" dog at all, all I saw were a bunch of over excited happy barking dogs, doing what they do when there is activity going on around them. As for the "play yard" while I was there I saw for myself the other owner "Maureen" rotating dogs in and out of the play yard that is right out in front of the office, where dogs get to see people coming or leaving for vacation. As for not seeing one poop, I would find this to be a GOOD thing, why would I want my dog standing in poop, all lawns and runs are kept VERY clean and as for the smell.....when you're at an establishment that kennels up to 60 dogs it's not going to smell like roses, but they do a VERY good job of keeping it clean! I have been taking my dog to Canyonwyck Kennels for the past 2 years for daycare and she absolutely LOVES it, every morning she's so excited to go that she stands at the front door of my home barking waiting me for to open the door to let her out to hop in my car! I'm VERY pleased with this Kennel and I would only recommend Canyonwyck and no other, the owners are very nice, knowledgeable, honest and trustworthy. read more

We have been taking our dog her for five years, and he has never had a health problem resulting from a stay. For a small additional daily cost, your dog can get time out in the play yard or taken for a walk, which are nice options. My dog is now 15 years old, and if he is in the play yard with another dog they ensure it is the right match. It is also nice that they offer bathing, so you can pick up a clean dog at the end of its stay. The owners clearly love dogs, I never worry about ours while he is there. read more

Because of the stereotypes about American Pit Bull Terriers, we are extremely selective with where we board our dog. Canyonwyck is not judgmental of her breed and treats her well. We have boarded her there many times in the past 5 years and will continue to use their services. She is always excited and wagging her tail when we pull up in front. She can't get wait to play! The employees are not overly friendly, but are always polite. My only complaint would be the weekday only hours. If they were open on Saturdays, it would be even better! I'm assuming they are better at boarding than grooming. I brought my Shih Tzu there twice for grooming. The second time only to give them a second chance. The result on the second time was worse than the first. The skill set looks like a beginner was learning to groom on my dog. I gave up on them. Worse job I've ever had with a groomer. read more

Actually I don't even want to give 1 star. I showed up without warning them I was coming in...The play yard is small and Pitiful and when shown the "walking" green.. I saw some disgusting looking dogbeds piled up by the side of the building with kennel written on them. (if you must go there bring your own!) Oh, She walked me into the kennel area and I about lost my lunch from the overwhelming smell. No it wasn't all filthy looking.. it was definately hosed out, A LOT. I couldn't help feeling the dogs and I were all walking around in a watered down version of what they had tried to blast out of there. Only one of the dogs had a bed... she told me they picked them up during the day so that the dogs didn't track water into them. However I only saw 2 beds in the aisle on a cart...not enough for the dogs. It was pitch dark (before she turned on the lights) fine for the dogs with uncovered runs, but the little dogs were just in constant night. Between that, the smell and being wet, I hope the little things don't get sick. I guess it's back to searching for me! I would never leave my dogs there. If you are, well....????? read more

I don't understand how this place has gotten any good reviews. I have been checking out different kennels for my dog all week and this is by far the WORST. I am seriously considering calling the SPCA. The only positive thing I can say is that when I called for directions, the lady was kind enough to offer to stay on the phone with me until I found the road. The bad definitely outweighed the good. They wouldn't let me walk my dog through on the tour because they said she would get too overwhelmed. (If she would by too overwhelmed on a tour, why would I leave her there? ) I came to understand why. The dogs were out of control barking and whining. The kennels were all wet, as were the dogs, without any bedding in them. Mind you the temperature today was 54 degrees. The lady explained that during the day the dogs don't have bedding so they can clean the kennels. This meant that these freezing dogs, who were shaking and wet had to lay on the cold, wet cement all day long until tonight when they would finally turn the heaters on and put the beds down. I thought this was horendous. At all of the other kennels I visited this week dogs had both bedding and heating during the day. Secondly, my dog has food allergies so I asked where the food was kept if you brought your own. To my dismay the lady showed me a huge pile of dog food bags in a corner of the office. There was no organization or labeling. I was shocked and definitely not convined that my dog would not accidently get fed the wrong food. The price was higher than other kennels I visited and the service (my 5 min. horrific tour), lack or organization, and borderline animal abuse makes my stomach churn. I left this place almost in tears. I cannot believe anyone would leave there dog here. I urge people to do there research. There are plenty of other kennels in the area for the same price or less that offer a much safer and pleasant environment! read more
