I should have guessed when I tried to schedule with him, and he asked me to remind him the afternoon before. I sent him pictures of the jobs we wanted him to do, which he acknowledged, saying that it looked like a full day's worth of work. I reminded him the afternoon before, as requested, and he then told me he had another job in the morning. He then texted me the morning of and asked if he could bring a helper, doubling the hourly rate but getting more done more quickly. I approved (stupidly). He then showed up and asked me if they were going to be working inside or outside (all of the jobs I had texted him about and sent pictures for were obviously inside). I walked him through it, and he told me he could do all of the work. Fast forward to when the work was completed (poorly). My wife called him to complain about the way his guys left things, and he started trying to pit my wife and I against each other. He changed his story several times--despite the fact that most of our communication was via text, so I had records of it--and tried to paint me as the bad guy to my wife. To his credit, he wound up coming out to try to fix some of the problems himself. However, he wasn't able to fix much of it the day he came, and he offered to get us a discounted quote on fixing the rest of it. We declined. He explained on this last day (after the fact) that it is difficult to exactly match paint colors (for covering patches he did on the walls) and that he wasn't able to tack down the area of carpet we had asked him to on the first day because he isn't a carpet-layer. Had he explained these two things upfront--and had he not engaged in all of the emotionally manipulative b.s.--this review may have been different. As it is, I wouldn't recommend hiring him for any more-involved work. If you need a cabinet fixed or bathroom hardware mounted, he's probably a fine candidate. For anything more complicated, my experience leads me to recommend going in a different direction. Photos are of "completed" work. read more

Two months after completion, the new upstairs bathroom stopped working and our first floor ceilings and walls hbroke with water damage. New plumber and contractor can't believe the horrible job that was done with the plumbing and fittings. We didn't even want to call him to fix it because his work was so shabby. Maybe he's good at basic handyman stuff, but I'd never recommend him for anything major - like adding an additional bathroom. read more

This blow my mind Pete has any good reviews. He screwed me over big time. He kept asking for money saying he needed it to complete the job and my dumb self, having never have worked with a contractor before, paid him. I over paid him by $4,000 for work never completed and also paid for work that even I could have done better myself, blindfolded, and with my left arm. I will not mention two other huge items he did so not not cause legal trouble, but if anyone would like more detail as to why not to use Pete, please reach on on here. I'm not writing this because I'm mad, I'm writing this as a warning to others. I'm out all this money for nothing and I don't want him doing a poor job for others. It sounds like his good reviews are on basic jobs which anyone can do. I urge you to look elsewhere and reach out to me with question. read more

We just finished working with Peter on several projects on the exterior of our house including remounting the stones on our front porch, cleaning and replacing shingles on our roof, tuckpointing our chimney and surfacing our driveway. We had an excellent experience working with him. Across each project, he provided an initial assessment, offered several options and provided a written quote. Once we agreed on the set of projects and pricing, he provided a timeline for the projects. Both the timeline and pricing were very fair given the amount of work done. During the work, he kept us appraised of the progress. He and his team were polite and professional and cleaned the worksite at the end of each day. The work was done as specified and within the agreed upon timeline and pricing. Additionally, Pete and his team were great to work with every step of the way. I would highly recommend him. read more

Pete is fantastic, he is extremely knowledgable and able to work through any home problem you throw at him. We had several issues ranging from plumbing, basement leakage, and general touch ups and he completed all of them timely and expertly. I used Pete twice in the last month. Once to reset a door lock that was sticking; and the second time to hang a ceiling fan in my bedroom. We recently had Pete Otis repair a door recently. Another contractor had installed the door some time ago but it never closed properly. Air from outside was leaking in and the door would pop open. Pete Otis repaired the door (re-hung the frame) so that it closes properly, no leaks and stays closed. We were impressed by the way he would show us what the previous contractor had done improperly and explained what he was doing to fix it. So, not only did he do a fine repair job but we learned something in the bargain. Nate was extremely personable, pleasant. His work was solid, clean and done in a proper time frame. The cost was very reasonable for the time and quality. I highly recommend him for small repairs or full remodeling. read more

Pete's first project with me was a huge success. The project included installing a new sliding glass door, painting my entire condo, installing carpet in the loft space, and patching drywall. The most difficult part of the project was installing a wheatgrass wall-covering on a 17' CMU wall. He completed the work within budget even though there were unforeseen challenges and provided a fair price for extra work that I requested after the original contract was signed. Since the completion of my first project, Pete has been a reliable support for small projects such as garbage disposal replacement, wood trim installation, and minor electrical repairs. Pete did an excellent job taking care of a large glass insert on a door that had broken. Cleaned up the mess, took the old broken glass out, and ordered a new piece exactly the same as the original. Installed it and can't even tell anything happened. Very fairly priced. Excellent craftsmanship, will keep him around for anything else that pops up. Highly recommend. read more

We hired Pete and his crew last March based on great Yelp reviews. We had a leaky middle window on an enclosed back porch and it was getting worse, with mold developing. Pete sized up the problem as stemming from a nearly-flat roof that probably had a leak and said I needed a rubber roof. He cautioned that there was a likelihood, once the roof was ripped off, that we'd find rotten timber and other issues - all of which turned out to be accurate. Pete tore out the ceiling, two of the four walls, removed old paneling, insulated, drywalled and painted. The relatively new windows were saved but the framing was replaced or repaired. When the room was opened up, Pete recommended that it was a good time to upgrade the electric, since the room only had one outlet. I was able to do that myself and added an overhead light, three outlets and a 220 line for a wall heater. The cost he quoted me for the roof and room rehab was reasonable and he stuck to it. He also replaced our leaky kitchen faucet. I didn't write a review immediately, waiting to make sure that no other problems arose, and none did. We are now using the room regularly and I am grateful for the exceptional craftsmanship and fair price. Pete and his team are the best. I highly recommend them. read more

I talked to Pete about a number of projects and decided to start with the bathroom before moving on to the other projects. He started the project right before he left on vacation. He told me not to worry that other people would cover the project while he was out of town -- no one showed up. As the project progressed, I needed to make alterations to my design because I did not believe he could handle the work. I found his work to be sloppy. His response was that "nothing was perfect". His list of imperfections include: crooked trim tile, shower floor pitched the wrong way, shower glass installed upside down and backwards, grout lines (some painted, some not), destroying my neighbors grass. I have tried to contact him for "warranty" work but he does not respond. Also, I would strongly suggest that you review your contract to make sure all aspects of the project are covered. I wanted a credit since I did not have him do the accent wall we discussed but when I reviewed the contract I saw he did not include it. read more

We have a 135 year old Victorian farmhouse that needed lots of TLC, and are so glad we found Pete to help us check off a long list of needed repairs. These included replacing several exterior cedar siding shingles that, because they were cracked or broken, were allowing water to leak into the walls. He repaired rotted material around many of our windows (which couldn't be seen due to the trim) and brilliantly remedied the situation, painting the whole exterior of the house including the gingerbread trim on the highest gable (yikes!) which was very detailed. He also perfectly replaced several soffits that had weather- and/or squirrel damage; some of these were pretty tricky to get to. He also did some power washing of my sidewalks and the side of my garage where mold had started forming. Cleaned the gutters while he was at it. He fixed a years-old problem of cracks in a multi-faceted arch window that others didn't want to tackle; now it looks super at last! He also beautifully replastered our mudroom ceiling and walls that had been water damaged due to the aforementioned siding problem, then painted it and applied some baseboard trim that really refreshed the look of the space. We found Pete to be very knowledgeable in many areas of construction, and so appreciated his advice and attention to detail. We eagerly recommend his work. read more

I own a small jewelry making studio and needed help with a lot of little projects. As you can imagine, it's really hard to find someone willing to take on small jobs, do good work, and not completely over charge you. When I saw Pete's sign in my neighborhood, it was like a little miracle! Pete helped me with so many things that might seem small to others but really does have a huge impact for me and my business. He helped me install a new bathroom light, new door trim, floor transitions, secure a rolling mill into concrete floor, and installed a ventilation hood to go over our soldering table. I didn't feel like I was being overcharged either. He was very friendly and communicative through the whole process. I even had to reschedule our work day last minute and he was super flexible. Pete is extremely professional, talented and timely. I contracted with him to repair a tattered wooden staircase that I had installed on my house a year ago by another carpenter service. Pete was reasonable, prompt and timely on repairing my stairs. I was so impressed with the work that he did that I contracted with him to develop and install an awning to protect the stairs from the elements of weather (his very astute idea!). Pete Otis offers the best work at the fairest prices. He took down popcorn ceiling, put in recessed lighting, restored an old patchy hardwood floors, and painted my home. Over the past year, Pete's been by a number of times to install wall shelves for me. Although it sounds simple, these are weight-bearing shelves so they need to be secured properly.
