I was walking around the historic Uptown neighborhood a half mile from my hotel when I discovered this charming bakery and coffee shop across from Round Lake Park. Pete's opened in April of 2019 in a building that was a laundry in the 1930's. Owners Steven and Sara Peterman took their inspiration for their new business from the weekend markets in Tampa and the bodegas of New York. The noticed a lack of markets you could walk to in St. Petersburg do they decided to create one. Pete's General started with hand rolled, small batch bagels. They now have a full kitchen and they offer fresh morning pastries, sour dough loaves made daily, muffins, coffee cake, cookies, cakes, pies and more. On the day I was there they had vegan double chocolate cookies, cardamom citrus cornbread, coconut carrot muffins, and scones. You grab and take your meal. There are two tables in the front of the store overlooking the park and a couple of picnic tables on the side of the building. I enjoyed my everything bagel and coffee while watching the ducks swim in the lake. It was the best bagel I have had outside of New Jersey. I really liked how they remembered to add the salt to the seasoning. It was just perfect. In addition to baked goods they also sell local products along with beer & wine, specialty gifts and baked treats.I saw organic seeds, beauty products, tea. Jams, totes, cards, and T-shirts. Outside I got to chat with some locals from the neighborhood and got a ton more recommendations of places to eat. This such a cute place. I am so glad I discovered Pete's. read more

I've been following Pete's for a while on Instagram and we finally had our chance to go. There is usually a line out the door on the weekends but it moves pretty quickly. It's a cute location just off the main street, Central Ave And if you're doing a mural walk, it's a great spot to grab some coffee and a bagel. I errored and didn't get mine toasted. Totally my issue but it was still a delicious sesame bagel with veggie spread. I love that they cut them in half because they are LARGEEEEE! Yum. I'll be back. read more

I've seen Pete's General all over Insta and I've just been dying to try them out. DTSP isn't exactly close but since I had a doctors appt nearby, I figured why not check em out? It's a cute little shop and I definitely had a difficult time choosing what to get, everything looked tasty (and I was starving lol) my bf got an everything bagel with a vegan patty and I got a garlic bagel sandwich. We also got the apple Coffee crumb cake and a coconut carrot muffin to go. All of that was about $29 and change (without the tip) a bit pricey for breakfast but I get it. The bagels were good and not too tough, the coffee cake was really moist and not overly sweet. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here but it's a nice breakfast spot. They even have a few picnic tables outside with a nice view of the lake. Just be careful where you step, Something was poking into my shoe (thru the sole) and I thought it was the shells but it was actually big Ol rusty nail that had poked thru my shoe other than that, worth checking out for a quiet breakfast read more

My sister suggested we give this place a go and I'm so glad she did! I pretty much love all breakfast food so narrowing down what to try was so hard. I chose to make my own and did the feta spread and avocado on the everything. What a great combo that turned out to be. I got the bagel toasted and I'd love to try their bagels not toasted. As a fairly picky bagel eater, I was pleased and would be happy to try more. PS: got the muffin too and whoa! The topping on that was amazing! Yum! I kept seeing friends social media posts about Pete's and figured I've check them out when I was in the neighborhood. It seems they are side by side with another cafe and without knowing it walked into the other place...so some bigger signage might be in order. I was the only one in the store and the folks were attentive, and stopped whatever they were doing to help me. The pastries in the counter looked interesting and delicious. The sweet and spicy Pepper Jelly Buns might be worth another trip back. I opted for the Lemon Poppy Seed Scone - it was nicely browned and covered with a white glaze dotted with Poppy Seeds. Unfortunately, the scone while it had nice layering was tough like the dough was overworked. The Lemon glaze had a nice tart bite and there was a good bit of the glaze. I also had a large coffee and it appeared to have been brewed as part of a large batch and held in a large metal thermal container - very average for a place with such a cute boutique look and feel. They have a wonderful location with outdoor seating and views of the park across the street, but I was underwhelmed. read more

Treat yourself to a Pete's General bagel or pastry or both! Emphasis on TREAT because these little suckers sure are pricey. Worth it though, so, so worth it. There are several crafted bagel sandwiches on the menu. If you're feeling creative-as I typically am, you can actually design your own delicious little experience. With approximately 6 bajillion combinations with toppings to choose from like capers, picked onion, sun dried tomatoes, vegan cream cheese, scallion cream cheese, there's a lot of fun to be had. The bagels sell out fast! So plan ahead. You can literally order in advance and select a later pick up time, so there are no excuses. Definitely check out the daily specials. My most recent purchase was for Wednesday's bagel: the jalapeño cheddar brb sobbing so good. I had it with avocado and tomato. On Friday there is a rosemary garlic bagel. The pastries are also super tasty and they are freshly baked throughout the day! I am obsessed with their muffins. The cinnamon rolls too. Frankly, Pete has a great setup going on. It's still a wonderful experience during COVID even though the general store is not actually open. You order and pay online only and pick up from the window on the side. The only downfall to this process right now is that you gotta remember to bring water if you plan on eating there on a picnic table. They do provide a napkin with your order. read more

Visited the new location on 1st Ave after being out of town for a while. No customer service skills. No greeting. I was with a friend and we did not know what the ordering protocol was as there are two rooms and it was our first time. We walked into the merch area and also saw bagels but no one behind the counter. There was a girl in the store who I thought was a customer because she said absolutely nothing to us and then eventually moved behind the counter and still nothing from her until I had to ask if this was where you got the bagels etc. Her response was not rude, but absolutely unhelpful and disinterested. Another business where you feel like you have to pull information from the people who work there. We walked out shortly after without any bagels. read more

Pete's General is an amazing little establishment. Their staff is SO friendly and inviting. The atmosphere is clean, minimal, and classy. They do have a table you can sit at inside and also outdoor seating. It is located right across from a small lake and it's such a beautiful and calming view, it reminds me how much gratitude I have for small business like this one and what an amazing community we are apart of! This business is also located right next to a local coffee shop and yoga studio! Pete's General offers so many products from local vendors from books to jams to kimchi to kombucha to flowers to produce to natural skincare products..you name it! They got it and the best part is that you're supporting not only this local establishment but the other makes in the city. They also have zero waste/low waste products which is really nice for the people who try their best to be low waste. The best part about Pete's General is their HOMEMADE BAGELS. OMG! Even better...they have VEGAN options! Their menu for the bagels isn't huge right now but I was told by one of their employees that they do plan to expand their menu and options. They are seriously the best bagels I've ever had and so flavorful and even better with the vegan cream cheese. They sell out almost every single day, they are THAT good. I absolutely recommend that all locals and visitors should try this spot out and support local business. 10/10 read more

After going to new york I craved a bagel that could match what I ate up there. After much research and hype from friends I came here! I got the original pete which came with cucumber, capers, lox and a couple other ingredients. I got here at 11 a.m and they were already out of everything bagels so I got an onion bagel instead. The bagel itself was pretty good, but the bagel was small and expensive for the price they charge. It's over $12 before tip for a bagel sandwich that will leave you hungry afterwards. We hadn't stopped in here in quite a while. They have expanded their shop to focus almost exclusively on their baked goods. I think this was the right call because most of the items previously were highly specialized and overpriced. Their bagels are decent. I know some New Yorkers that might not says it's up to that level but they are still good none the less. Order online as it usually takes a while to get your order. Don't be surprised if they run out of the bagel you selected. Answer the phone after you order just in case they have to make a substitution. read more

So we all know NYC is the bagel capital of the world. NJ has some formidable competition but nothing beats a NYC bagel. You can imagine how skeptical I was when I saw bagels in Florida posted on Instagram. So, with low expectations I went and ordered a bagel with cream cheese and scallions. Simple. And really good! I just wasted 15 minutes trying to order online. They need to update their ordering system when they are out of bagels. Or how about answering the phone or even have a voice message, "Sorry we are out of all bagels." We need someone with business sense to open a bagel shop. The best, and the most expensive fresh bagel you can get in St Pete. This is a cute little store with a clean, Spartan feel to it. There is a counter for two in the back and a family style table for larger parties. Many of the products are from local producers but the are also a large number of branded items that you'll recognize from national producers. Everything is on the expensive side but the high prices sort of go part and parcel with the feel of the place. We went for bagel breakfasts. The bagels are darn good; super chewy and excellent flavor. They are also about double the price of Bella's out St Pete bagel co. Therefore I would totally recommend this place for a single sandwich but I'd hesitate to suggest buying a dozen to take home. Nevertheless I was there and I did buy a dozen. No Baker's dozens here btw. The to go bagels alone cost me $30. Add my breakfast and I was out $60 including tip (for breakfast for two and 12 bagels to go. I took the extras home to freeze. I'll update sometime soon with how they toast up. read more

First, let me say this is the best bagel place I've been able to find in Tampa/St. Pete. There is a decent selection of fresh bagels, great cream cheeses they blend in house, and a variety of sandwich options to make with the bagels. My issue which is why this is getting a 3 star instead of a 5 star review is the speed in which it takes to make food. It doesn't seem to matter if there is no people in line or 10, it takes 20-25 minutes to make a bagel with only cream cheese. This has been my experience including this weekend when there was one person in the store besides me. The staff always seems to be behind and as a result, typically has an attitude. With that being said, I'll still be back... just with eyes wide open. read more

After hearing so much about Pete's, we had to try it. The pros for me were the cozy feel of the shop, cute outside seating, and authentic neighborhood vibe. The service was a bit scattered and ok. It was a busy Saturday morning but that should be expected, no? The bagels were good, but they weren't anything really special and they sure weren't worth the premium pricing. I would definitely recommend pete's and urge folks to support local, but if you want consistently (very) good bagels go to St Pete bagels on 4th. They know how to handle crowds and the bagel selection is outstanding and pricing is very fair for the quality. read more

We drove past this shop while driving along first avenue and I looked it up after I saw a sign that said "fresh bagels made daily". I am a HUGE bagel lover and am always in search of a good fresh bagel. This place did not disappoint. BEST bagel & lox I've ever had. It's the original st Pete and ohh myy goshhh. Heaven in your mouth. Also tried the bagel sandwich which was also incredible! It's a must try if you love bagels! Some times there's a wait but it's worth it! This bagel shop reminded me of something I'd see on the show Portlandia. The chaos almost didn't feel real. I got the Grand Central Pete on a salt bagel and a brown sugar latte. My boyfriend got the General Pete on an everything bagel and a cold brew. My bagel was delicious, but they messed up our order. My boyfriend ended up getting the same bagel as I did, but on a plain bagel and I got a cold brew instead of a latte. We didn't feel like it was worth it to say anything given how crowded it was. I'd be willing to try this place again because the bagel was delicious, but giving this 3 stars because our order wrong. read more

One of the best bagels in St. Pete. They have vegan cream cheese and vegan cookies. They have an option to add fresh scallions on the cream cheese. Bagels were thick and had a good amount of airiness in the center with crunch on the outside. If somebody calling you an idiot makes you cry hysterically you need to do some serious self evaluation. (Even though I didn't call you an idiot...) B. I didn't call you an idiot. Hoping this was an only occurrence and will be giving this another try. We tried Pete's general for the first time from a referral. We were disappointed. Ordering didn't take long although we waited for 32 minutes for two bagels. I understand the weekends are busy and this was a Sunday... this is prime-time for business though and was very disappointed in the time it took to finish our order. Our bagels were missing toppings and neither was toasted. The flavors were there, just not the service and over quality of our food. We hope this was a rare occurrence and we'll try it again and update our review accordingly. read more

Love how the area on 7th Ave N across from Round Lake is coming into its own. I ordered a selection of bagels and bagel sandwiches for a Broker's Open House yesterday and they were fantastic.
