I was excited to see a Peter Chang during our recent vacation, as the one near us is consistently good. And this location did not disappoint. We had the dry fried eggplant, grandma noodles, golden mountain chicken, and sautéed string beans, and all were delicious. The only thing I didn't like was the hot and sour soup, but I'm pretty particular about my hot and sour soup, and this one was both hot and sour, just not my cup of tea. We enjoyed it when we first ate there about 8 years ago and now the food has been going down in quality ever since. Not bad but not great. The food was okay. We usually dine in because of the long day at Colonial Williamsburg walking around. This time we were automatically charged a 20% gratuity for the service. I am a waitress and we have dine in other fancy restaurants that had great service and deserved 20% tip. The places was not too busy and we were serviced pretty quickly. The food came out fast which was great. The young man came and got the order but never really came back to check on us after giving us our drinks and plates. Two of the plates were dirty and we had to walk over to tell them and there were no apologies for the dirty plates. The young man never came to see if we needed more water. It is a summer day and we had walked around in Williamsburg and were thirsty. The food came out and then the waiter was gone. There were plenty of folks working so I am not sure why the mediocre service. We were going to tip but not 20% worth of service. The tip was almost $20 dollars and all he did was his job and nothing more. No one ever refilled our water. No one asked if everything was okay. No one came to check on us until it appeared that we were finished with our food. It was disappointing because the service was okay but not 20% worthy. Two meals at Peter Chang's and I swear I don't get the hype. Each time the food has just been okay, no better. Today a request for "no cilantro" on a shredded tofu dish got interpreted as "add cilantro." I have never seen so much cilantro on one plate, rendering it completely inedible to me. The person who did eat it told me I wasn't missing anything. The twice cooked pork belly with leeks and cabbage had absolutely no cabbage but otherwise wasn't bad at all. A dry cooked beef with chilies had good quality beef and a little bit of ma la happening but not much else. It was just okay, nothing to crave or rave about. We were blown away. The Crispy Pork Belly was a taste bud sensation. The way the spice level created sizzle/tingle in the front of our mouths was extraordinary, but we weren't overloaded with heat. It was practically an alchemical experience. But then, THEN we had the Tea roasted Duck and while the duck was very, very excellent, I have to draw special attention to the onion fries that came with the dish. If Peter Chang can mass produce these onion fries, I am very confident they will be doing a service to diabetics worldwide. They HAVE to be lower in carbs than potato fries and I shirt you not, Chang's onion fries were every bit as wonderful and crispy as the best french fries you've ever had. I try to only post positive reviews, because, who knows someone else's taste. I tried this restaurant because of a very positive and funny review on Yelp. I chose multiple items, some standard, some totally new to me. I picked the order up as takeout and had it home and on the table within 20 minutes. Three of us tried every dish. We had spring rolls, pan fried dumplings, scallion bread, spicy shrimp with asparagus, chicken with mushrooms and veggie fried rice. We would not order any of these dishes again. We came with a group of 7 to this family-style restaurant- my first time but a favorite of my local fam. For appetizers, we got the bang bang shrimp, some egg drop soup, and spring rolls. They came out very quickly, which was nice. The bang bang shrimp were a good sort of sweet and sour with a strong emphasis on the first part. We ordered veggie fried rice, house style beef, golden mountain chicken, sesame chicken, lo mein, and the jumbo shrimp with pepper and garlic. The veggie fried rice is very different from the automatic side of fried rice that comes with entrees- it's not very fried. The jumbo shrimp come with a ton of vegetables but the flavor isn't super strong. I wasn't impressed by the sesame chicken either. House beef with bok choy was good but not very different from a traditional beef and broccoli. The best dish was the golden mountain chicken, but it came out about ten minutes after the rest of the food only after we asked the waitress to check on it. Overall, everything was pretty good but not exceptionally flavorful. It came out hot and fresh but maybe we should've ordered spicier foods. It's a very spacious restaurant with nice natural light during the day. The atmosphere is cute and traditional without being overly busy. Very good. Could have dishes with more vegetables. I can see why some do not like the selection. Most that do get a clay bowl or one of the other dishes served in a bowl that are more family style. The gentleman taking our order hardly understood English. We told him that I can't tolerate anything spicy. We ordered the pork soup dumplings, and the scallion pancakes, to start. Then ordered the Peter Chang seafood, the tea smoked duck, and the dry fried string beans. Food began coming out in no particular order. First came the scallion pancakes. A very interesting dish reminiscent of the Indian pori bread that is cooked in a Tandoori oven and puffs up like a balloon. Then they brought out the seafood dish. We ordered everything mild no spice. Out came the fish dish. It was covered in red pepper flakes and the sauce was red. I tasted it and my lips and mouth were on fire. I began choking. It's a good thing we ordered hot tea. I gave the entire dish to my husband. He liked it but was upset that it was spicy and I couldn't eat any of it. Next they brought out the soup dumplings. They were amazing and delicious. The waiter told us it takes 20 minutes to make these. He should have told us that when we ordered them. And finally the string beans and the duck came out. And three bowls of rice. The string beans were wonderful and the duck was crispy and yummy. The fried rice was nothing. It had no flavor. We have a ton of leftovers. We won't be back. read more

In various cities, I've seen both Peter Chang and P.F. Chang's and I tended to conflate the two. No more. Two months ago I was fortunate to eat at (and review) P.F. Chang's in Durham. Excellent! Yesterday Peter Chang in Williamsburg was there when I was hungry. Very, very good. It seems like Peter Chang has been there forever; I regret that it took me this long to try it! When I walked in I was greeted & seated by the very pleasant hostess. On the way to a 4-top I noticed the open kitchen, largely walled in glass. I like. It took me forever to absorb the 5 leaf laminated menu. So many options! I finally settled on * Spring Rolls (3) * Hot & Sour Soup * From the 16 Lunch Specials, I requested the Beef with Onion and Chili Pepper (3 chili emojis) The Spring Rolls and H&SS came out almost immediately. The SRs came with a ramekin of Duck Sauce. Rather pedestrian SRs. I ate and enjoyed all 3, but I probably won't order them again. After eating all three, my server, Lula, comped me an additional SR. Still good. The H&SS was very good, with homemade noodles. That will be a repeat. The entree of Beef with Onion and Chili Pepper came out next. I could see slices of jalapeños lurking in the dish! I added White Rice. Soy Sauce, sliced up the larger pieces, and dug in. Yeah! The 3 chili emojis on the menu are just about right. The dish was delish. But I could eat only one small serving because of the heat. I took the rest home and enjoyed it across my next two meals. Peter Chang is a hit with me. Many more dishes I wish to try. The store is highly visible on Richmond Road. Parking is easy in the dedicated lot. The store is quite clean, and both of the women I interacted with were very pleasant and helpful. We have had takeout from this restaurant probably 10 times over the last 2-3 years. We have never eaten-in here--After tonight, it will be hard to return. The meal was blah at best and it was overpriced. I ordered two menu items (Generals chicken & Orange chicken w/ fried rice) and we found meal portions of good size (good enough for two additional meals), but the quality of the food leaves much to be desired. Went to this restaurant for the first time we happen to be in Williamsburg. We got lettuce wraps , potstickers, three pepper with chicken and fried rice and golden chicken spicy with white rice. Omg the food was so so good. Looking forward to going to the one in va Beach hopefully they are just as good. This is a must go to restaurant if your looking for great service and great food. I am a regular to the original Peter Chang's in Richmond and I was excited to be able to meet my parents at this location since it is right in the middle. There were plenty of staff in this location which was really nice but they were not super attentive and some seemed to be visibly annoyed if we asked for anything. The food was overly spicy and we ordered all of our regular staples but someone was just very heavy handed with the numbing spices that day. We still enjoyed ourselves overall but just slightly disappointed because I know how wonderful the Peter Chang's experience could be. read more

My first visit here, almost 10 years ago, I was impressed by the authenticity and quality of the food in a rather nondescript Chinese place in Williamsburg, VA. I have eaten it many times since and I have had some great food, but rarely in the last year. Unfortunately, the quality has greatly suffered and now they are simply using the spicy profile of Szechuan cuisine to hide low quality ingredients. It is apparent from the oils used to the meat and vegetable portions and quality. Their portions are adequate to large, but they are using filler ingredients for heft rather than fresh vegetables or proteins. Their sauces are bland or unpleasantly too spicy not leaving any room for other flavors. The quality of the food has more than once lead to gastrointestinal discomfort as well. It is sad that what was once an excellent Chinese restaurant is making such low quality food. Most recently: My wonton soup was so old the wonton dough was like glue disintegrating into the broth. The eggplant was overly salted, super greasy, with terrible texture, the lo mein had nothing but noodles, no egg, no protein, no flavor, just grease and some sad onions. The three spice chicken was as expected though the chicken was rubbery, the fried rice that came with it had large clumps of completely white rice in it. read more

My fiancé and I stopped by once to dine in and once for take out while vacationing in the area. Pleasant but straight forward service. Comfortable seating inside and a very short wait time for food. The food comes out as it is ready. All the food we ordered could not have taken more than 10-15 minutes between placing the order and the food being placed at our table. We tried a few dishes including the Dry Fried Eggplant, Shredded Tofu Skin, Double Cooked Pork Belly and Sesame Noodle. Everything was excellent. The real stand outs for us were the Shredded Tofu Skin and the Sesame Noodle. Both were fiery with all the Szechuan pepper and highly satisfying. The shredded tofu had tons of cilantro in it which helped cool and provide some crunch to the chewy tofu skin. The Sesame Noodle was much different than we've had anywhere else. It's flavor was richer and more savory than we've had before. The added Szechuan peppercorn and oil rounded it out with some nice heat. The prices were very reasonable especially for such great food! Hubby and I stopped here as we were in the mood for authentic Chinese food and we were familiar with this name as we've eaten at his restaurant in Virginia Beach. Today we took advantage of the lunch specials and we both have the same tastes in food so we each ordered Szechuan fish which was flounder today. He wanted it 7 on a scale of 1-5 while I didn't specify. Maybe I should have because both were numbing hot so that I couldn't feel my lips, tongue, chin, you name it, lol. We also each ordered brown rice to replace white rice or fried rice. A dollar extra for fish, a dollar extra for brown rice but you do what have to do to try to keep any extra weight from creeping up, then drink those calories later. The ambiance was just tired from the inappropriate music, some loud definitely rap music, to the blown out light fixtures to the multicolored walls covered with faded scenes, again not suggesting you're anywhere near China. I am giving this particular place 3 and 1/2 stars just because the spice level was on point. In my opinion, this is probably the most authentic Chinese restaurant on the Peninsula. When I tell people about this place, they often get it confused with PF Chang's. This is completely different. From the ingredients and dishes on the menu, to the way it is served family style-- I am often reminded of my childhood when I eat here. The entrees may seem pricey, but they are meant to be shared. I love getting the bubble scallion pancake for my son. He loves to pop it and eat it. Soup dumplings and pork belly are always a hit. As another reviewer stated, the dishes made spicy and oily are meant to be that way. The building could definitely use some updating. Inside as well since it doesn't really have much flair. I wish they played any music because when you go in, it's super quiet. Kind of intimidating when it's that quiet. Aside from that, service is top notch.
