My daughter had a severe occlusion when she was 12. Her dentist recommended breaking her jaw and realigning it but I was not okay with that. I am currently undergoing treatment with Dr. Lam. I drive all the way to San Mateo from San Jose to see him, and it's worth it. I am currently in college, and can only come home on weekends -- few weekends a quarter. Dr. Lam is very accommodating to my schedule, which is always revising itself to satisfy studying needs. For this, I am extremely thankful. (He is also very accommodating to my odd, college-student sleeping pattern, agreeing to see me well into the afternoon) Dr Lam's office is very aesthetically pleasing. All of his modern equipment is new, his hardwood floors are clean, his chairs are new, even his bathroom is spotless... with a really cool sink. I had to get my wisdom teeth pulled out, and he offered to give me a copy of my X-Ray to give to the oral surgeon. He e-mailed it to me and now it's my desktop wallpaper. It's so cool! At the start, Dr. Lam explained my treatment to me very thoroughly and clearly. I am glad, knowing what he is doing to my teeth, why he is doing it, and why other treatments won't be as effective. Every time I visit I am greeted with a smile, and he examines my treatment progress. He then proceeds to either replace my wire, install new bands, or whatever. As he is doing it, he explains what he's doing and how long it might stiffen or make my mouth sore for (which is helpful to a growing college kid... I need to know when I can eat, man!) Also, when I call to make an appointment, I don't usually get routed to some impersonal answering machine or receptionist, but Dr. Lam answers himself and addresses any questions I may have while setting up my appointment. Now THAT's customer service! Dr. Lam is friendly, knowledgeable, and an extremely well-educated guy. I am glad he is my orthodontist. He is well worth the drive from San Jose to San Mateo. (However, no matter how friendly he is, I can't wait for my treatment to end; BRACES SUCK. He does make the process more enjoyable, though. I never dread getting these forsaken hindrances tightened :P) read more

I would like to mention that I am do not typically give 5-star yelps. Once treatment begins, it may be difficult to change providers. Although price matters to most people, I feel that the quality of service matters a great deal as well. I'm happy with the services received here. My treatment with Dr. Lam is ongoing but is nearing completion. I am happy with my results. The reasons that I give Dr. Lam 5 stars is because of these reasons: Dr. Lam takes time to answer my questions. He is detailed and careful about the information he gives and he responds to e-mails in a timely manner. His service and professionalism was better than other orthodontics I went to see for consultations. In particular, I once asked him about amalgam fillings and personal opinions of them.. his response was a helpful and informative one. He cited the American Dental Association (ADA), giving the facts presented to him in dental school as well as personal choices with it. He was accurate about the length of the treatment and was not afraid to tell me mid-treatment that I wasn't wearing my rubber bands as much as I was instructed. I'm glad my treatment was done here. Feel so lucky to have Dr. Lam treat our family! I've consulted a couple orthodontists; and the treatment proposed by Dr. Lam is way the best! His quality of service is top notch, he's very friendly, highly-skilled, honest and trustworthy! At first we consulted a different orthodontist who said my kid's cross-bite situation could possibly result in a more complicated case therefore proposed us to use multiple orthodontic appliances to fix it, for which the appliance requires daily activation (turn) and a headgear to be worn for minimum 14 hours a day *_* gosh, I was like passed-out after I heard this. I was really worried as my kid wouldn't be able to handle such stress (neither can I). As part of my habit I always wanted to get second opinion when it comes to medical treatment. I remembered I saw a great smile from my friend's kid who's pretty much same age as mine (under 10) treated by Dr. Lam. So I went to make a consultation appointment with Dr. Lam. At the beginning I didn't mention to Dr. Lam what the first orthodontist proposed, but then I was so relieved to hear that Dr. Lam said my kid's case was not difficult but pretty common and braces can fix it!! At that time I still doubted a bit because the treatment plan proposed by another doctor was very different. But given that I did not want my kid to be suffered from the different appliances proposed by the first orthodontist, I decided to undergo treatment with Dr. Lam. It's just a week from now, the braces 'already fixed' the obvious cross-bite. WOW....YES!!! JUST A WEEK -- It already pushed the upper front tooth out to align with the lower tooth (no more cross-bite problem!!). Of course, we still have a long time to go to fix other alignment issues but I just can't wait to thanks Dr. Lam for making my kid so relieved and happy wearing braces!! Now my kid no longer shows the weird upper front teeth, but is 'proud' of his braces....(and we can forget the headgear thingy YEAH!!!) THANK YOU DR. LAM!! read more

I came here a few years back for a consultation but never went through with it as I was moving in and out of San Mateo/San Francisco. I ended up going with a different orthodontist in San Francisco as I was currently living in SF at the time. Anyways, I'm back in San Mateo now and I work in Hayward. I also recently had a baby so travelling is not something I'd jump to. The commute is horrendous and working M-F leaves little time to actually go to SF for any "emergencies". I got my new wires put in on Wednesday and because my teeth shifts so quickly, my wires started poking into my gums the very next day. It caused me a lot of pain as I was unable to eat/talk. Dental wax helped a bit, but the wires were so long that it'd just dig straight through the wax. I called my orthodontist this morning but unfortunately they were out of town and Saturdays are the only days that work for me:( So I desperately called Dr. Lam's office. I was willing to pay out of pocket because I just needed the wires in in the end to be snipped, it was such an awkward situation. I swallowed my pride and asked for the service. To my surprise, they told me to come right in and they'd snip it at no charge. On top of that, they even gave me some dental wax for free. They handled the situation so well that I will be referring all my San Mateo peers over for braces. Thank you so much!! You guys saved me a weeks worth of pain and hunger! read more

The yelp reviews below are incredibly misleading. I scheduled an orthodontist appointment with Dr. Lam and had the worst experience I've ever had with an orthodontist. First of all, he didn't see me until 30 minutes after my scheduled time. When he did see me, he did a "consultation" by telling me to open my mouth and examined it for exactly one minute. After that he told me I'd be a good candidate for invisalign and that was the end of the consultation. It's absolutely ridiculous that I had to waste my time to come in for a consultation. I've gotten other consultations before and the doctors have taken the time to thoroughly take pictures of my teeth, thoroughly walk me through what they can change about my teeth, and tell me how the process will be like. Dr. Lam rushed the consultation and when I asked him, is this it? Will you be taking pictures or tell me what will change about my teeth during this process? He said no. Instead I have to agree to do the treatment with him before he can tell me anything else because that's how he runs his practice. I have never experienced this type of level of service with ANY service I've ever had to pay for. Please note this isn't a few hundred dollars. Patients are paying thousands of dollars for this and he should think to take consultations seriously. The service was extremely poor and his whole practice is cheap if he thinks this is how he should treat any client of his. read more

I know. How many 5-star updates can I possibly write for this guy, right?? I have since had my braces taken off, and I thought that would be it, but noooooo, I have managed to chew through two of my bottom retainers, thanks to a pair of strong jaws and relentless grinding. Each time my retainer broke, Dr. Lam has made time for me to go in the same day and take a mold for a new one -- no charge by Dr. Lam and only a minimal lab fee after we realized I should probably get a thicker and more durable night guard instead, as I was chewing through my retainers. Can I say that I just love going to see Dr. Lam? He is so pleasant and kind. There is a review by someone who said Dr. Lam snipped her wires for her even though she wasn't a patient. That doesn't surprise me at all as he is one of the nicest people I have ever come across. read more

Dr Lam and his entire staff are amazing! I started my treatment about 2.5 years ago and have been going in every month for my regular checkup. Prior to Dr. Lam, my teeth was super crooked and had gaps but in 2.5 years he was able to straighten out my teeth, close up the gaps and save me from a dental implant. It's been a long journey but the results so far have been amaziinnng! The office is always clean, there's ample parking, and everyone in the office is always smiling. For appointment reminders they send email/text messages which makes it super easy to add to your calendar. Big kudos to Dr Lam and the entire office staff! read more

I rarely write reviews, so if it takes me writing a review, it is either really good or really bad. Unfortunately this is really bad and I want to warn those who are wondering about Dr. Lam. I went through the Invisalign process with Dr. Lam. Long story short, with my scheduled visits with Dr. Lam himself, I thought everything was going well and my teeth was shifting the way that they were supposed to. By the end of the process, when I was weaning out of the Invisalign, my bites were no longer efficient, meaning my bites were not tearing the food. Instead, whenever I was biting, the food were pushed into the gaps between my teeth, causing a lot of pressure, giving me headaches every time this happened. I couldn't eat anything. It was a nightmare. Whenever I told Dr. Lam about it, he just brushed it off and told me it takes a bit of adjustment after being on Invisalign. Dr. Lam told me to mention this to my dentist, who referred me to Dr. Lam. When my dentist spoke to Dr. Lam, Dr. Lam put the blame on me and said that I did not wear the Invisalign the way that I was supposed to. It was so upsetting for him to say that because it was not true. I was very disciplined in wearing them. If he felt the teeth were not shifting the way they were supposed to, he should have mentioned it to me along the way. And by the way, the retainer that I received at the end was also very uncomfortable. When I mentioned this to Dr. Lam, he cut the two ends of the retainers and told me to try that. For those who don't know, you have to wear the retainers every night after the Invisalign process. My dentist ended up fixing all the gaps and had to grind down areas where the top and bottom teeth were hitting each other after the Invisalign process. Now that my teeth are fixed, I'm supposed to be wearing retainers, which I don't have because Dr. Lam cut them. So my teeth is now shifting back. I also have to mention that before my dentist fixed the problem, he asked me to go see Dr. Lam and see if he (Dr. Lam) could resolve the situation. Dr. Lam wanted additional $2500 to fix the problem that he created. Are you kidding me? He already collected $5500 and upon my and my dentist's request, he would not give any discount on the original amount. I even scolded my dentist and said to him Please! I hope you are not referring Dr. Lam to any of your patients anymore! He is the worst referral you have made, EVER! I have known my dentist for over 30 years and I have never spoken to him like that before. A big caution! Do not go to Dr. Lam. You will be disappointed. I had a terrible experience! read more

Excellent Service!! Orthodontics work is not the same as just pick a place to go dinner, or just try a new salon. You will need someone care about your need, and willing to provide you honest advise, and treat you just like a family friend. I have my braces on since April 2008, so far I have a great experience with Bay Meadows Orthodontics. Dr. Lam always is the one who comes to check out my teeth. I had visited lots of different Orthodontics office before I start my braces. Other offices are just "crowded"!! Packed of people, and lots of "associates" or "technician" to check out the patients. If you want a professional, honest, friendly dentist, you need to at least make an initial appointment to meet with Dr. Lam first, then you will understand what I mean. By the way, their office is new, computerize, the most important is they are super CLEAN!! If my family and friends need braces in the future, I will definitely recommend Dr. Lam to them. read more
