Shorter emergency wait times and doctors too quick to diagnose and discharge patients.

My daughter Mauryn had an excellent experience at Peter Lougheed Hospital. The nurses Navjot , Mikayla , Kerrin and Shirin and assistant nurses were very kind, caring, and attentive throughout her stay. They made sure she was comfortable and well taken care of at all times. I also want to thank the surgeons, Doctor Meyer and Doctor Nathan, the surgery went smoothly and the recovery process has been great. My daughter was touched when the surgeon said "Do not worry we'll take good care of you" He even gave me a call and updated with my daughter's condition. I truly appreciate the dedication and compassion of the entire medical team. Thank you for providing such high-quality care! read more

THE worst experience for an elderly family member, ever! In Any hospital in AB. Period. Unit 53. Was told 3 different things from professional staff members within the unit when they are 100 metres from each other at . This happened two more times on two other issues. Zero communication. Requested Dr. To call me . It was charted and put into the system. No one could tell me if he had actually called or seen the message. We waited all day & night for the Dr. To come by after being told that he hasn't been in for rounds (two professional staff said this), only to find out that he'd done rounds at 5:00 and wouldn't be in until the next morning! I now had to leave another message. In the meantime, My family member's health has deteriorated. Unit 53 is an overflow unit : they bounce you to it when they need a bed or there is no room elsewhere. It has appalling care. My family member is now too fragile to transfer elsewhere. I'm completed horrified of the what I've seen. Do NOT leave your loved unattended if they are in the hospital. Even advocating for them has become impossible and crazy making. read more

My father has been hospitalized since Tuesday, September 30, 2025, awaiting a stent placement before a critical toe amputation due to type 1 diabetes and worsening gangrene. Despite fasting and being withheld from insulin--resulting in dangerously high blood sugar--he was labeled "hostile" for requesting necessary care. The stent procedure has been delayed for over 3 days, and his condition is deteriorating rapidly. Staff have been noncompliant, dismissive, and negligent, and these delays are now threatening his life. We demand immediate intervention, a medical reassessment, and accountability for this unacceptable lapse in care. read more

Me and my wife came to Calgary last week on vacation and I was experiencing some A-Fib/ irregular heartbeat, went to emergency at Peter Lougheed Center and got checked out and I was admitted to hospital for 5 days. I cannot begin to tell you the care and professionalism that I received from Dr. Blankenstein (cardiologist) and his staff. From EKG's, bloodwork, blood pressure monitoring, CT Scans, ultrasounds and cardio version. I was so amazed with the care that I received in 5 days, it was truly unbelievable. worst postpartum unit. I was treated worse than a dog. Was never checked at night only in the morning with the bare minimum. when I asked something or even begged they would throw the stuff in the washroom sink as they do me a favor. it felt as they just wanted me to leave as soon as possible. I was stuck in the bed after delivery with a caterer because I had an episiotomy that was done to me without consent. I cried to go home due to their treatment and they didn't allow me since they had procedures of the "care" they need to give after delivery And I had to wait. Was a nightmare and a traumatic delivery experience. read more

They rushed me through emergency and the doctor was ignorant and a racist. They said nothing was wrong with me but there was. I was admitted for ten days. Oh MS isn't an emergency to them, they should have looked harder and realized there was underlying issues. I'm sure the emergency doctor was on pills. The rest of my stay was excellent. read more

If there was zero stars that's what I would give. I'm a bit naive when it comes to things like racism. Being a white guy I don't experience it. I feel horrible for those that have to suffer through because ppl suck. But today I have watched every east Indian patient get dealt with by the east Indian doctors while it seems every other race of humans get to wait at the back of the line. When I mentioned it out loud I was told by a staff member that "you can't be racist against white ppl" I'm not sure what that means. Can someone explain this to me please? read more

I went to unit 130. I was there less than a day before I checked myself out. The nurses refused to come to my room to talk to me. also, I was in excruciating back pain and they refused to give me anything for it. It's inhumane the way I was treated. also.... unit 130 looks like a jail. the bathrooms are soooo jail like. read more

I had to go there yesterday for chest pain. They quickly did everything and ran some tests. As soon as they realized everything is under control, they sent me to waiting room. I was there for about 7 hours and they monitored my condition a couple of times because they wanted to make sure there is nothing serious. The doctor that I talked to was very friendly and explained everything in a very easy way. The nurses were helpful, funny and polite. Overall the experience was good and I had confidence that everything is being done in the best way possible. I understand because of the number of patients and the nature of their visit they may experience a long waiting time. I've been there too. But when something important comes up, they are efficient and do their best. I would like to thank the staff. I recommend this place and appreciate their hard work and honest efforts. My surgeon and his team were excellent, and they deserve 5 stars. Two stars for the care I received after surgery is being generous. The care was subpar at best. Not once did a nurse change the board in my "room" (if you could call it a room). I was "Joyce" for most of the time I was there (the previous patient who'd been there). Not one nurse wrote their name on that board as they're supposed to when they're on shift. I had abdominal surgery and it was very hard for me to get up, stand up, etc... Once I could, I changed the name and date on the board myself! The nurses treated me as if I was a burden each time I rang the bell for help (which wasn't often, because I'm a tough cookie and do things for myself 99% of the time in my life!) They weren't rude per-say, but not overly friendly either. They are all more invested in the giant roll around computers, making sure everything is entered 100% instead of paying attention to the human being laying there (not their fault, but still). I went without adequate pain meds, as I lay there listening to one nurse go on to someone else about her cats, kids and taxes. I ended up tending to my own beeping IV pole several times, learned how to fix it myself, etc... No one encouraged me to walk, or even offered to walk with me. I told them I was dizzy and feeling faint, and that they should probably check my sugars since I am diabetic. They acted as if that was an extraordinary request. I told them my IV was interstitial and was pumping fluid under my skin. It took them almost half an hour after several nurses told me it was still in the vein, before one nurse finally agreed it was interstitial. I asked for a spirometer for my lungs several times, no one brought me one. Everyone else who've had the same surgery as me is given one of those ASAP after surgery and encouraged to breathe into it many times a day to open the lungs. I was on oxygen the entire time I was there because it was hard to take a breath in. Not one nurse clued in and gave me a spirometer. Bizarre! I asked them for a portable oxygen tank so I could go walking and not feel faint - they thought that was asking a lot, and it never happened. They want people to walk walk walk to prevent blood clots - well, how was I supposed to walk without someone spotting me, especially the first few times! I told them many times I was DIZZY! I was in a room with 4 other people divided by curtains. I had a friend down the hall who had the same surgery I did, and you'd think they'd put patients together in rooms who've had similar surgeries so they can be tended to better (I dunno, maybe that's just me?). She was treated a heck of a lot better than I was, as she'd told me after the fact. Another friend of mine who had the same surgery as me a few weeks prior, was given MUCH better care, her own room, and had friendly nurses the entire time. Not sure what it was about me that they decided I wasn't worthy. I was put in a room with an elderly woman who wanted the place scorching hot. I told the nurses I was very uncomfortable with the heat, and they didn't care. The three others in the room were tended to often, but I was overlooked and forgotten. I'd buzz for help, and most of the time no one came. I am not a complainer and am very reserved. I hardly asked for help. I guess I was being too demanding because I wanted ice water, not 4 hour old room temp water. I was brought FULL SUGAR food when they knew I was diabetic! The nurse who took my staples out wasn't even paying attention to ME, she was chatting with another nurse about another patient! When I was discharged, no one said "best wishes" or anything...my husband and I were glared at as if we were from another planet. The whole experience was BIZARRE to say the least! I am in Emergency right now with my 90 yr old dad with rib fractures and pneumothorax. He has been waiting since 3 pm. I understand well that the Emergency staff are doing their best given current crisis in our health care system. However it is unacceptable that there is no water fountain in ER or a way for an elderly patient to get water. I asked for some ensure for him as he had not eaten anything for several hours. No help at all!. Are we livi in a modern country with advanced health care?. I keep asking this question to myself as I wait in ER with my father. I have to make sure that his pneumothorax is stable so I can take him back home. My wife spent a month and a little bit in this hospital.was on third floor, fifth floor and then 4 th floor and never recieved anything but the best of care from doctors, nurses and the support staff. Because she was and is such a complex case she was very high maintance and she and I never felt neglected or were "putting" someone out. I cannot praise the entire staff that we dealt with on numerous wards for their kindness and understanding during a very stressful time in our lives. I had invasive surgery last November and ended up with 50 staples from stem to sternum, I woke up in the Vascular ICU. Hours later two nurses wanted to change the bed sheets. They sat me up in bed and pulled me off the bed without lowering it to a level where my feet could touch the floor so the hop to the floor split the internal stitches right then and there. That simple action by two nurses will delay my recovery by seven months. I need to be opened up again, will be given a mesh. (which will restrict torso movement for the rest of my life), stitched and stapled and back to the ICU. In the mean time I am in an abdominal band 24/7 for another four months. I can't regain any weight so can't regain any strength. Can't lift more than 5 pounds, and can't push a poop. Coughing and sneezing is brutal. I can literally eat a sandwich, lay down, open the band and watch the sandwich digest. No recourse. read more

I've always had good experience here! Long wait times are due to how serious your emergency is! My husband was rushed in for chest pain! I've waited 2 hours for dog bite! But had good stitches put in yet got infection because doctor didn't stitch or clean my smaller wound properly! So I take good with the bad! Close to home so I come here! I Tried to call looking for patient there, once I was transferred to third floor unit/area, the lady/nurse was very rude. I didn't know patients didn't have phones in their rooms, and she said to me "oh why don't you call her home and leave a message there" the heck? if that's how the handle calls, I would imagine care must be about the same, awful! read more

Disgusting pigsty!!!! Watched some guy picking things scabs from his hair pants underarms eating them while sitting in a chair and after 8 hours the same flaky scabby crap still sitting on that chair.....If you think emergency waiting rooms are sterile - WRONG...... not one time in 3 wait times did they clean off anything. In fact I called the bathroom cleaner out because, while watching him clean the bathroom he used paper towel and no cleaner to clean the sink off with no cleaner at all. Too lazy to go back and get his cleaning cart with solutions, and completely forgot the toilet. OK so the Covid pukers waiting room is sharing the same bathrooms as the others waiting. Someone smoking in their used the sink for an ashtray. Piss shit all over toilets. While in Covid section which takes overflow from emerg all together again shared bathrooms for all. And watching cleaning lady with her mask pulled down on the job yapping about home life with a colleague trying to work. Like how much do you get paid to stand around and not clean RAMA. Sick as I was all I could do is lean on a wall disgusted with the filth- who the hell wants to sit in that room..... read more

My friend was put in the mental health unit 5 weeks ago. Nothing has been consistent in her treatment. With an agitated mind she is given a new nurse every two days. She is still a prisoner under the experimental drugs that they use to change the pathways of the brain. The Dr uses the excuse that people going through this go through good and bad periods. Well, what can I say about health care in Calgary. It turns out its not as bad as everyone says. At least not from my experience last Friday. I was riding my bike through a parking lot and hit one of those parking block things and went for a tumble. I got up and dusted myself off and realized my shoulder was sore and making a crunchy, grinding kinda sound and it hurt. So off to the Peter Lougheed I go. After waiting about 1/2 hour in the emergency room then an hour wait to get an X-ray and another hour for the doctor. He diagnosed my problem as a broken collar bone ( DUH , I could have told him that) I was on my way home within 3 hours with a sling and some pain killers. I've heard all the horror stories when other people go to Emerg. and I'm sure it does happen but all the staff were very nice and considerate to me. I might have just got lucky or it was just a slow night. read more

I have to give this Centre 4 stars as far as hospitals go. It was easy to find our street entrance with good signage. Parking cheaper than downtown Calgary which is always a plus and it was covered which is handy for winter time. Security visible which is also nice. The hospital itself was clean thankfully, nice flower shop upon entry and everyone we ran into was friendly. There was even a skinny Santa walking around giving out candy canes. I had no problem seeing where I needed to go even though I had never set foot inside the hospital before. Nurses usually get a bad rap for being B^&*(Y but everyone I met this date was kind, patient and courteous. Maybe going on a Friday helped! Where you are admitted inside the unit, there is a locker with a key for you to lock up your valuables. Nice touch so that if you are alone you are not screwed over wondering if your stuff is OK, nor are you loading down your male loved one with your purse! Staff very accommodating, telling you where the washroom is without one asking and nurses being gentle enough if they know you are petrified of needles (like me). The wait time was OK, yes they were behind but I would have been shocked had they been on time. The DR I had was very nice and never appeared rushed, always asking if I had any questions. I would have no issue returning to this hospital if I had to, even though hospitals generally give me the heebie-jeebies! read more

We had a great experience having our second kid at the new maternity ward at the Peter lougheed we had the best nurse; nurse Samantha's the best and my family and I are very thankful we were lucky enough to have her. She takes control of the room makes everything so smooth even made us laugh a few times. Thanks Samantha for making a very stressful and nervous time one of the best times of our life! My husband had knee surgery and was only in the hospital for one night. When I went to pick him up, they would not get us an orderly to take him downstairs. I thought that was rather unusual but besides being unusual, I am in an electric cart and could not push him out myself to our car. However, I was able to PAY someone to help us out. One of the nurses helped us down the hall to the elevator (not very damn far) and said she could not go any further as she would get in trouble. EXCUSE ME!!!!! I also got a ticket for parking because I could not get the parking meter machine inside to print me a ticket. There was a number there to call, but I forgot my cell phone at home. I was surprised to find out that we had to take his pills to the hospital. My husband had to go to the doctors to get him to sign a form indicating what medicine he was on. Apparently that was not enough, we had to take in his meds which they used to give to him. They used to give you your meds, but I guess they are trying ANYTHING to save a buck. We save a buck is one thing but then not give us help to get to our vehicle pisses me right off. They have not heard the end of this!!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

I would like to share my time at PETER LOUGHEED CENTER .I was in for 41 days and two surgeries. Even though i lost two thirds of my leg .I had the best team of vascular and foot doctors you could have asked for. Doctor Gregory Samis did the first surgery he did a bypass then Doctor O Toole a foot specialist wanted to try and save my foot to no avail . Infection was spreading fast. But i give him credit he really tried and i thank him for it. Then there are the other doctors who checked on me every day who were part of vascular team. Doctor Romman Doctor Annie and others finally Doctor Paul Cantle who did my last surgery we all agreed the best outcome was to amputate above the knee. I just want to thank all for what each have done .With out them all i may have lost my life. Now my nursing staff . The vascular unit 58 and 59 .The nurses and nurses assistants in cube 1 are are the best .These girls work their butts off for the patients they take care of they are there when you need them and check on you even when their not expected to i think after this coronavirus is under control they deserve a well earned raise. not just this unit but the ones who put their lives on the line with the coronavirus. This establishment is by far the worst place I have ever been too. I came in worried about chest pains, rapid heart beat and shortness of breath. I saw the intake nurse 3 hours after getting there she was polite took my blood and ran an ecg than told me to wait in the waiting room for a doctor. While I was there I noticed many things. The hospital is absolutely dirty and smelt like old stale alcohol, there were people coming in from outside strung out and just needed a place to sleep so they were literally sleeping on the floor, walking around patio patients for money and causing more disruption. The security just basically chatted and let them stay for a but. There were drug users using the washroom and doing drugs in the washrooms and one security guard called a user out on it. I was pretty disgusted. It fealt very unsafe, unwelcoming and u sanitary. I fealt the more I stayed there I probably would be very sick. I understand that it's cold and there are homeless.people who need help and if you are going to let them stay at the hospital, put them somewere where they arebt disrupting patients who are already waiting, scared and unsure of how long they will be sitting there for. I also understand that hospitals are busy with the amount of patients but I feel this particular hospital is very unorganized and arent really worried about the safety and well being of there patients. I will not be back to this hospital. I will go anywhere else. After a few more hours of waiting for a doctor I decided to leave the hospital as i was not comfortable being there in the first place. Broke my leg in three places, requiring surgery. The staff were absolutely phenomenal. Very caring, fantastic at their job nurses and doctors. Empathetic and caring and all round great sense of humour, making me feel so relaxed and well looked after. Great, great hospital! read more

I was in Peter Lougheed Hospital mid December for a week, starting on a Thursday. I was notified the next day that my medical procedure would not be done over the weekend. No big deal; I wasn't dieing and there were no doubt worse off then myself. Note: The word "advised" as noted below was used hap-hazzardly throughout my stay; sometimes I was told and sometimes I was not. NO food meant ONLY ice chips. Saturday morning I was advised that I could possibly be getting the medical procedure Sunday night so NO food. NO food all day on this Saturday. Sunday at approx. 2:40 pm still not being able to eat I asked about food and was told they would get back to me. Approx. 6 pm I inquired again and was told that YES I could eat ...... I was also told that they knew of this since 2:50 pm. I went approx. 30 hours without being able to have food. That night I ate any and all food I could get from the cafeteria plus the hospital dinner. Monday morning NO food. I got the medical procedure around 4:00 pm on this day. I came out of being under around 8:00 pm. Nobody came to tell me anything as to how the procedure went and NO food. I was so looking forward to Santa's sleigh out of the country come Thursday I could care less about food. Around 10:30 pm I was advised that the medical procedure was unsuccessful. I get on the horn to try to juggle my trip down south only to find that 11:00 pm was cut off time to change my itinerary .... without a big price tag that is. Tuesday morning I have not eaten since Monday morning --- over 24 hours. This day I am advised that the second attempt to the medical procedure will be in the afternoon. By this time I had Peter borrow off Paul to change my travel plans from one city to another but still the same country. Tuesday afternoon I have this second procedure and it is successful. Wednesday mid afternoon I depart from the hospital. Not only was I starved; guess the hospital doesn't have enough food to go around but an extreme lack of communication on their part; or else they just don't give a shit. I should point out the hospital was like an oven. Despite hours and days of not sleeping (it took 4 days of requesting for a sleeping pill), starving and my body on fire (I stood out in the cold in my PJ's every couple of hours to get air to breath), my mind was going. Literally .... any ounce of my humor was gone and I am sure steam was bellowing out of my ears. Truthfully; I thought I was going crazy mentally ...... it is not a pleasant mental state to be in believe me. Let me top off my story by telling you of the one nurses of multiple ones I had taking my blood (I hear they are really not nurses). On the Saturday after numerous attempts by this specific one nurse to take my blood and unsuccessful I might add (I have no veins and usually a baby needle is used on me), says "You screwed that up!!!!". Needless to say I never saw her again, she never tried to take my blood again and that's a good thing ... because I think I would have ripped her face off. PS: The medical procedure I had was minor but it is only done at Peter Lougheed Hospital. So that's my story and I am sticking to it. read more

Love how nurses strictly reinforces one guest per all non-white patients, but lets in a whole family for the one white patient in our shared emergency room. Myself and another guest of another patient tried to gently ask a nurse why what is, and all we got where stammers and half-made excuses... "Wait behind the red line, I'm busy" 10:30pm said by the registrar as we meet her with my vomiting, feverish wife. I wish I could give this a 1/4 star because thats how worst the accommodation we've been through. Paid parking by the hour, broken vending machines, rude teller and registrar, we can tolerate that; but saying that they prioritize the more sick patients and not following up to it is what hit us the most. My wife felt like she's dying; she's vomiting, having constant diarrhea, feverish and numbing feeling, and yet The registrar wont let me represent her (do the talking) she doesn't care, she's rude and wont attend to us until we proved we have alberta health card and showed her my wife's photo ID (she still has interim driver's license so no photo on it) after finally getting registered she attends to my wife brashly taking her blood pressure , is that how nurses/registrar or whatever you call yourselves work? I understand that sometimes you get overloaded but thats the first time I witness shit like that. I couldn't make a scene because my only priority at that time is to having my wife treated. We waited for 1.5 hr no priority for the sickest at all, doctors attend to her, we got home 7:00am i'm just thankful she's better now, kudos to the doctors, shame on the other staff. read more

I dont know how to say this, but I have the most horrible experience in Peter Laugheed with my pregnant wife. It all started when she was being given epidural. The doctor had to pick three times to get the correct place,and ended up giving more medicine. Instantly my wife complaint about headache and numbness, but the doctor said it is irrelevant. Within few moment my wife went into shock (blood pressure went down to 30-50 ) and the baby's heart bit was lost. The nurse call 'code blue' , all the doctors rush in and saved the baby and the mother, thanks to them. The next bad news came in few mins. Instead of having epidural, she got spinal and upto her chest! She got paralyzed upto chest! Thankfully they abled to revert in few hours,but she felt all the pain while the spinal was being revert.The rest goes well in the delivery room. Now it started in the post natal unit #34. On the second night at 11.45 pm the duty nurse harshly refused to provide diapers for the newborn! We are not told at the beginning we are supposed to bring that, cos we can bring some since we have already stocked diapers at home! Next day, one nurse even asked skeptically why we are feeding too much formula to the baby (formula provided by the hospital). You informed her the doctors said so since the baby is late premie and my wife has no breast milk yet. At the very end, when I asked the station nurse to show me how to put the baby in the car seat, they roughly refused me by saying." it's Alberta law that you are supposed to know that, it is your car seat and you need to do it. We have no time to show you". She was so rude! This is mu first baby, she is tiny, and I was scared! Is that abnormal for a father to ask? My suggestion would be, be vocal and provide written feedback if you experience something like this. The Alberta Health should know this. read more

Both our senior parents are on the 4th floor in Unit 44. The care they are receiving is beyond our expectations. They are treated as if they are family members. We have the utmost respect and gratitude for every person working there. read more
