I had a Papilla Repair surgery with Dr. Nordland in July 2023. I had an accident in New York where I slipped and fell. After the trauma, I had a big black triangle near my front teeth and incisors. Every periodontist from Dr. Pasquinelli in SF to a famous one in NYC said it's impossible to fix the papilla. It's one of the hardest thing to do as a periodontist. Then I found Dr. Nordland's website and flew in for a consultation. He said he could do it. I was skeptical at first. Some of the reviews were daunting and made me doubt Dr. Nordland. I went on my gut and did the surgery. Right after the surgery, it looked like it worked, but it slowly started retracting. I was so angry that I even wrote an email saying how dissatisfied I was with the surgery after 3 months. Little did I know the healing is a 2 yr process. After 2 yrs, my dentist said my gums looks really good and it's amazing what the surgery did. What Dr. Norland did was place a graft and over time that graft will grow towards the teeth. I'm here to apologize to Dr. Nordland and hoping this review will help others find him. The office and staff are awesome! read more

Dr Nordland is OVERPRICED for the services he provides. He didnt provide the treatment plan at the beginning for ALL the procedures. I was unaware of ALL treatments and costs. PRESSURED me into UNNECESSARY IV SEDATION for bone grafting and further implant procedures. Didnt offer alternative local anesthesia. Charged me about $130 fee for every following check ups or questions I had in his office. I spent already at his office about $15K only for teeth cleaning, check up visits and bone grafting. He doesnt care what is the best for a patient health, only what will benefit his pocket the most. read more

Peter Nordland is arguably the finest and most highly respected Periodontist in California. His reputation is actually worldwide. Dr. Nordland has been invited all over the world to train other Periodontists and has even authored a number of books on the subject. As a child, I was a tooth brushing fool...and managed to brush down the gum line of my front lower teeth with my overzealous technique. Another periodontist in San Diego had scheduled me to repair the area....offering to "stretch the gum tissue over". It just didn't sound right. So...I asked around. When I ask around..I mean business....I only ask around from the cream of the physician and dental crop. Peter Nordland was mentioned (repeatedly) with awe...by his peers. I kid you not...with reverence and awe. So...I scheduled with him. Nordland is not only a pre-eminent expert in his field...the man is warm, down-to-earth and surprisingly accessible. He explained the folly of the other Periodontist's plans to correct my gum line. I then hired him to perform a gum graft. He did so...and my teeth are better than ever. Good thing too...because I have plans to live into my hundreds...and to keep these same choppers for as long as I possibly can! read more

Just read the review written by JD and her/his experience was very similar to mine. The only difference is I agreed to let Dr. Norland do everything recommended by my dentist :(. He harvested the bone from my palate. Then implanted the bone. Then, placed the implant. This all took almost a year and countless office visits. At the same time I had a temporary covering the teeth my dentist was crowning. We had to wait for Dr. Norland to finish his "palate, surgery, waiting, implant procedure" in order to place the crowns. The temporary would fall out all randomly when I was a dinner guest or at my own house. Very embarrassing. Well, the best part is the final product. It hurts. I've had several x-rays and 2 dental scans. The implant is impeding the tooth next to it. Touching the root. The next tooth just happens to be crowned, so there's another problem. As Dr. Norland explained to me...he placed the implant surgically and bone grafted around it. He asked me if I knew what it would be like to remove the implant? Nice scare tactic. The experience was horrendous. I have many many issues with my mouth and Dr. Norland confirmed my fears of correcting his mistake. It would be a nightmare! This has already cost me lots of $$,$$$.$$ and time and pain. Actually the tooth hurts right now! My dentist couldn't get the crown on the implant. He said the crown wasn't secure. Another thing, I went to my dentist and of course he pointed the finger at Norland...but my dentist referred me to Norland?? These guys are incredible. It is all about pushing the most complicated procedure to get more $$. I went to a qualified Oral Surgeon who recommended using material to form a bone graft and placing the implant, which could be done at the same time. As far as his office, it's located in a great part of La Jolla, which explains some of the ambience in the office...having to be nice to wealthy, expectant customers. The girls in the front part of the office take a while to warm up to you. The girls in the back office are friendly, particularly the one from So. America and the dental hygienist.. They do put the little monitor on your finger, which is overkill. I would not use him again and warn everyone. Just go with your gut feeling. This is my opinion from experience. I'm sure there are people who want to hammer everyone, but really the truth is necessary in order to keep these guys honest. read more

There's a huge difference in quality of care when you make the effort to go to people who've been recommended by others in their field you have come to admire and to trust. This is how we came upon Dr. Nordland. Dr. Nordland has actually written articles and books on Periodontal care. He's lectured around the world. Even though he has he's approachable and easy to deal with. His wife, Kathleen works as a hygienist for this busy Periodontal business and does excellent and careful cleanings. Great people. Immaculate exam rooms. They have no private parking lot so I do my best to arrive a few minutes ahead of time to snag a parking spot at curbside. We've been going here for years and have never had a problem finding a parking spot. read more

All through high school I had an extremely 'gummy' smile. Dr. Nordland showed me how he could raise the gum line and expose the enamel that had been hidden underneath. I was anxious and excited to have such a big surgery when I was only 17 but, after talking to previous patients and hearing of his reputations as one of the best periodontists in the country I felt assured that I was in good hands. He did not let me down... The surgery was painless and recovery was quick and easy. I took only Motrin for a day or two following the surgery and was outdoors on a camping trip the following weekend! Dr. Nordland genuinely cares for his patients. He took his time explaining the procedure and never seemed rushed during our appointments. Dr. Nordland went above and beyond when listening to my concerns and reassuring me. Following my surgery Dr. Nordland would call to ask how I was doing and told me how I could reach him if I should have any questions or concerns with the healing process. When I look back at old pictures from high school it makes me cringe. Dr. Nordland was my periodontist for an implant. Most lovely experience I've ever had going to any sort of doctor/dentist not just because he did a stellar job on my implant. Dr. Nordland is such a warm and kind fellow. He would ask me all sorts of questions to distract me from getting an IV or anything else unpleasant. He genuinely cares. After each procedure he would call me personally in the evening to see if I had any concern or questions. Brenda, Aubrey and Socorro, are just all such genuine and lovely people. All of them made what I expected to be an unpleasant experience, dental surgery, as comfortable as possible. My whole implant journey was about a year and I must say I'm going to miss coming in. I found Dr. Nordland after searching for a specialist specifically known for gum grafting. My case was difficult as I came to him to repair a botched surgery performed by a previous doctor. Dr. Nordland and his staff were empathetic to my situation and the surgery went well. I could tell that he was meticulous and skilled as a surgeon. I had little or no bruising after the procedure. I have given multiple five star reviews, but this is one time I wish I could give ten! DR. NORDLAND AND STAFF ARE SIMPLY STELLAR! I was extremely nervous about proceeding with a Connective Tissue Grafting Surgery as I had a terrible experience previously with a different dentist using a different method which resisted in only partial correction (extreme pain, ongoing post-op infection, significant food and oral hygiene restrictions, scarring, and general lack of good follow-up care.) Dr. Nordland and his staff were so incredibly kind and gentle about my concerns and spent significant time explaining the procedure (which he personally developed) and answering many, many questions. Once it came time for the procedure, I was absolutely shocked by how easy it and the post-op were. In contrast to the previous procedure, the sedation was much more comfortable, there was ZERO pain after, healing occurred in a fraction of the time, I was able to engage in traditional oral hygiene much earlier (which improved my confidence), food restrictions were minimal, and, most importantly, the results were absolutely beautiful. He was even able to remove the scar tissue, resulting in the gorgeous smile of my youth. On top of all that, the cost was quite reasonable, and the after care was a dream. My results are great -- even better than I expected. Every aspect of my experience with Dr. Nordland and his staff over the last year or so has been excellent. My dentist had recommended consulting with two periodontists, which I did. Dr. Nordland's treatment plan was more technologically progressive and promised a better result for me. It all turned out as I had hoped. Noteworthy details: He harvested bone with an advanced instrument from my own tori for the needed bone graft. That process was totally painless, both during and after the operation. He then was able to place four implants together in my front lower jaw. It's all done now, and totally functional. I am the engineering type that approaches everything skeptically and I am a huge proponent of referrals. Dr. Nordland works closely with our non-affiliated highly skilled dentist/cosmetic dentist that recommended Dr. Nordland to my wife about 8-10 years ago. My wife had hugely successful gum grafting by Dr. Nordland which is the best referral I could get. I am going in for my second of three-phase gum grafting procedures this week. I spread the treatments out to maximize flex/insurance coverage and Dr. Nordland was very accommodating with this approach. Truly world-class. Yes, the building is probably older than any patient, but there are only so many spaces oceanside in LaJolla CA and the atmosphere is relaxing rather than clinical. Charges are more than in Tijuana Mexico or even Birmingham Alabama, but you get what you pay for and in my case a bargain. Lots of procedures and cleanings effectively delivered; another additional dental doctor works all operations besides principal; staff make even one not wealthy like myself feel at home. People fly in to get his work done; I drive almost 2 hours each way which tells you most of what you need to know about having saved teeth from denturing. Validates parking which really helps in area of high-priced everything. read more

Today I am three weeks out from the gum grafting surgery that Dr. Nordland performed on one of my front teeth due to recession. I am completely blown away at the result already, and am totally baffled as to how I never had pain during or after the surgery (and I didn't take any pain meds except Motrin to reduce swelling). In fact, the day after surgery, I had to look at the roof of my mouth in the mirror to prove to myself that he actually did harvest the grafting skin from there. My experience with this surgery is totally opposite from what others have told me their experiences were like at other offices. The appearance of my gums now, after the surgery is perfect; what a relief--I couldn't be happier. I have been a patient of Dr. Nordland's for about 6 years now. He has done several extractions and implants over this time, as well as regular cleanings by his hygienist. All I can say is this man is a master at his profession. He is in demand worldwide to teach his techniques and I can totally understand why. Everything he has done for me, and a dear friend who recommended him to me as well, has been exemplary. I have had quite a few issues with my teeth over the years and no one has addressed these issues anywhere near as professionally, pain free, and graciously as he and his staff have demonstrated time and time again. I cannot recommend him highly enough. His staff is to the same high standards as he is. As an example i had to have a tooth extracted and some bone matter put in place, a fairly major procedure. What amazes me that after the numbness wore off there was NO PAIN whatsoever. The same with each of the implants. How does he do this? A skilled master is the indisputable answer. And again my friend found the same results with Dr. Nordland. And I might add he is a very personable gentleman, and truly cares for the welfare of his patients. I'm not a fan of the dentist in any stretch of the imagination. However, with Dr. Norland's office it was different. The office has a very welcoming and calming feel. The staff was caring and well educated in their field. My dentist recommended Dr. Norland and I agreed to his $185 "consultation." Dr. Norland is a professional with expertise in gum surgery. I was extremely pleased with his exam and careful explanation of the dental work I needed. I wish I could say the same about his staff. To begin, I was informed that Dr.Norland is a "fee for service" business. Given this comment which was made twice during my initial phone call, twice on the appt. reminder call, and then again twice the day of the appointment it was CLEAR to me of this policy. The receptionist stated that she would file the insurance paperwork "as a courtesy." After waiting two months, my husband made numerous attempts to speak with SOMEONE regarding my claim. I contacted my insurance company directly and was informed that Dr. Norland's office failed to submit x-rays. My husband spoke with Sorrocco who stated "it's not my fault, the insurance company is just slowing down the claim and doesn't want to pay." Approximately one week later I received a denial letter from the insurance company. In following up, my insurance representative stated that the information report stated I needed "cosmetic surgery to cover tetracycline stains on my roots." Interesting.....since my teeth needing surgery are all covered with bonding. This is not a cosmetic based need. My husband has called Dr.Norland for the past two weeks trying to get a status update after being told Dr.Norland would look into it. SO, if it were possible to rate Dr.Norland with a ZERO I would! Apparently, Dr. Norland and his staff do not desire to work with patients who are not wealthy enough to pay CASH. My recommendation, if you have insurance Dr.Norland is NOT the dentist for you. read more
