This appears to be highly recommended place in town while staying on budget. Indeed it was! We had…read morea table on the outdoor patio with lakefront view which elevates the entire meal. Our servers were attentive and helpful, however, we had to wait for almost an hour for the food to arrive given their adequately staff. Hubby ordered the Den burger with burger and I had the shrimp ragotoni. I enjoyed the homemade pasta but the entree was a bit heavy with the cream sauce but it does have great flavors. Love they have KBC beers on tap and the blueberry ale was very refreshing. Overall, this is a solid choice in downtown Houghton with lakeside view and good menu options. Do keep in mind that prices are a bit high given it's in the UP. Also, you pay extra for protein in pasta entrees as well as bread in appetizers that's usually included.

The server told us the specials for the day, and I remember there being a LOT - almost as much as what was on the regular menu! We almost got the chicken wings special, but we ordered the burrata caprese appetizer and added prosciutto for $4. It was good! For entrees, I ordered the duck breast, which seems to be a staple item from here. I ordered it medium rare and it was definitely medium at best, but still tender. It is not a huge portion, and I would've like the skin crispier, but the meat itself had great flavor. It sits on a bed of parsnip puree with a blood orange reduction (a little too sweet and too much of it on the plate for me) and sauteed spinach. It left me just satisfied enough, but still a bit hungry. My fiancé got the flank steak, which was probably around 8 oz but the menu doesn't list it, with french fries and some sauteed vegetables. He said he was actually pleased with the type, portion, and cook on the vegetables. The french fries are that "old-fashioned" style, which I really like! And the chimichurri sauce was fresh and flavorful. The service was mid - sometimes it was fairly quick and attentive, other times we felt like we were waiting a long time to be tended to. For a more local, seasonal, "farm-to-table"-esque meal, this is probably the closest you will get in Houghton. The front desk at our hotel said she heard this restaurant was pricey/expensive, but I thought it was pretty fair!

Well my mistake as I gave them the wrong date. So we turn up when there was a pile of people who had made reservations - the manager was amazing - she was already so busy but she went out of her way and managed to get our party of 8 sorted and seated. The service was amazing , the food even better. The BEST prawns I have had outside of Australia - like amazing. My husbands chicken was really great as well - in fact all of our meals were cooked to perfection. Even when they were so busy with the graduation we were made to feel like we were fabulous. The band was great as were the cosmopolitans. The manager kept checking on us making sure we were ok and she was so so lovely. I highly recommend Bonfire , even under stressful conditions they gave the best service, drinks, food and ambience. And don't forget the great prawns I highly recommend this place , I'm definitely purely going again.

Do not book a summer wedding reception here…read more We held our wedding reception in the banquet room on July 26, 2025, one of the hottest days of the year. The banquet room technically has an AC unit, but it was so ineffective that our guests could not tell it was running. The owner has since acknowledged that this unit "struggles on any hot day." The venue knew the forecast and knew the limitations of its AC, yet there was no adequate contingency plan. The room became so unbearably hot that our elderly aunt, who has a heart condition, and other family members had to leave early--some before receiving dinner. Most of our guests were gone before dancing began. Dinner was scheduled for 5:30 p.m. but was approximately 1.5 hours late. Several parents left to get fast food for their children and then returned. Once dinner was served, the venue ran out of potatoes and barbecue sauce even though only 76 guests attended--12 fewer than the 88 people the venue had been asked to prepare for. We were told the venue was short-staffed because employees had called in sick, and the owner later cited problems with the oven. Those circumstances may explain the service failure, but they do not change what our guests experienced. The restaurant side had substantially stronger air conditioning. We were told at the time that it had been closed because the venue was short-staffed. We were eventually allowed to move there, but by then most guests had already left. We still paid the full $500 charge for a dance floor that we could not meaningfully use. We also had to advocate for a reduction afterward; it was not simply offered. The final invoice was reduced by $462 from $4,467.84. Of that amount, $312 corresponded exactly to the 12 absent guests at $26 each, while only $150 was deducted from the $600 room charge. The $500 dance-floor charge and the $587.60 charge for "gratuity, set-up, tear-down, etc." remained unchanged. Although I waited to post a public review because I did not want these problems to overshadow my memories of our wedding, I documented the heat-related departures, food delay, shortages, and staffing problems in writing three days after the reception. When I eventually shared my experience, the owner responded publicly with "not sure what possesses you" and "shame on you," minimized what happened, compared us with couples who were supposedly happier, and attributed the problems to the weather, sick employees, and equipment issues. That response showed very little accountability for the venue's responsibility to provide a reasonably comfortable room, timely and sufficient food, and a workable backup plan. A wedding brings together people who may rarely all be in the same place. We cannot get back the part of that day our family missed because they had to leave. Future couples deserve to understand this risk before booking the banquet room.

He made several recommendations, including Portside. It was excellent. Food and service were excellent. We are a product of the South and dont have much whitefish and walleye available. I had the walleye sticks appetizer with an order of fries and my wife had the whitefish cakes. Both were delicious. Fries were obviously hand-cut and large; also very hot. Our server was great! The best part of the meal was the BREAD STICKS! It appeared that the sticks are baked in a round pattern, like a pizza, and then cut into sticks. They were so hot, I couldn't hold them until they cooled a little bit. The accompanying spread was excellent; also marinara sauce. One could make a meal from the bread sticks. The vibe was pleasantly rustic. We decided on a booth instead of seats at the bar. Again, our server was great. The guy who brought out the bread sticks was equally good. I suppose the bread sticks are brought to the table directly from the oven. Highly recommend this place!

We rarely sit outside but this patio beckoned and we were helpless to resist. There's even outdoor seating available if you arrive before the restaurant is open! Silas brought us menus and took drink orders right away. We enjoyed the season's first shandies while exploring the menu. His attention was perfect and we shared some laughs each time he returned to our table. Neither one of us wanted to share (I guess) so we each ordered our own appetizers. I can never get enough smoked whitefish spread... until it's ALL MINE! I enjoyed every bite and would do it again. Patrick ordered the walleye strips and he did offer me a bite (generous devil that he is). They were perfectly crisp without being heavy or greasy. If I had known that... nah, I'd still get the whitefish. We'll be back to visit The Portside and try more menu items. Who knows, maybe we'll split something next time?

Service and food for the most part was consistent and priced at what would be expected at this restaurant and $ level. Of the four waitresses three were very warm and helpful with needed answers to a few questions and requests. Only one waitress was a bit odd and cool. She did what was necessary but if you needed something her failure to acknowledge verbally was disconcerting. She just looked at us without expression, spun around and walked off. Eventually she would bring what was needed. The food quality and taste overall was quite acceptable. Only item we did not like was the rice which seemed artificial and over processed. Drinks -- We usually order a beer and/or wine. Only once did we decide on a mixed cocktail. Not again. same as the rice there was a very artificial taste, no potency whatsoever and left both of us wondering if there was any alcohol at all. Not being heavy drinkers we usually feel the effect of one drink. Yes, we would return and hope that Red Lobster's reorganization makes it a sustainable franchise again. We will just stay with beer, wine, unprocessed seafood and recognizable vegetables including potatoes.
