We had been on Isle Royale for the day and needed dinner and a restaurant that had longer hours; Joey's was our choice. They have a great menu and stayed open later than 'just a bar.' The staff were ever so friendly. Our server, Jenni, and the owner were both lovely to talk with about the restaurant, the area, and life. Joey's offers an excellent selection of locally sourced ingredients and happily, a huge gluten-free selection. The Michigan-based brew selection was also appealing; we tried several. Seating and decor were also welcoming. The aquarium was a sweet addition. Our food was delicious. The fish was delicate and moist. Coleslaw was cold crunchy and creamy. Crab & Artichoke dip was hot and creamy. And we even had dessert which included mud pie, key lime pie, and peanut butter pie; no photos as we were devouring them. We were wanting to try some seafood while we were in Houghton, so stopped in here. We were greeted and seated right away, at a nice big table. Our server was very patient as we perused the menu and asked questions. We ended up sharing two appetizers and splitting a meal. We had breaded clams and crab rangoon. The clams were small and not as flavorful as we were hoping, but the crab rangoon was made with real crab and was delicious. We ordered a meal of breaded whitefish fillets and six breaded shrimp and each had a garden salad for our two sides. Not all the salad ingredients seemed completely crisp and fresh, but the number of veggies in it was terrific. The fish and shrimp were good, although I might choose some unbreaded options another time. There were nautical decor items throughout the restaurant. A few more vegetables in the mix and a dash more heat would have made it better in my opinion. One in the group had fried shrimp and raved about the flavor. Service was decent, and the food was pretty reasonably priced for what you get. A rare occurrence of a place not just loading your plate up with mostly the useless sides instead of the main thing you ordered. Service was okay but our waitress had an AirPod in the entire time talking to someone. We got calamari, it was chewy and absolutely NO seasoning. We were driving thru the area and gave this place a try. I can genuinely say I was a bit said it isn't a local place for us. The food was fantastic. I had steak and shrimp and the steak was well flavored and blackened shrimp were very tasty. The hush puppies were fantastic. Husband ordered clam chowder and was very pleased with it and said it had a good amount of clams. Waitress was so sweet and cheerful. You could tell she was a people person and enjoyed her job. This place is very average. It's ridiculous that Houghton doesn't have a great fish fry like so many cities around the Great Lakes. I guess the owners of this place have never visited Buffalo or Milwaukee on a Friday night. The prices don't leave you saying "wow, what a great value".... Until Houghton county allows big box stores to come in along with the restaurants that always follow the dining opportunities will continue to suck... This is a very economically depressed area. For my entree, I chose the Lake Superior Trout and it came with 2 sides of your choice and a cornbread muffin. Their sides menu was extensive and I was excited to choose! I opted for the almondine sautéed vegetables and the red beans and rice. The veggies didn't have any seasoning on it. Just butter. We asked for salt and pepper at the table and that did improve it. The red beans and rice were ok. It was undercooked for sure. The trout was pretty good. Did not taste super fishy or anything which is good l. The garlic butter really helped it a lot because I think it could have been seasoned more. My friend got coconut shrimp and I tried a piece and her meal was way better than mine! So tasty!! A plus was that we were seated right next to a fish tank so that gave us a little entertainment throughout the meal. I guess the easiest thing to say is that Joey's is just okay. The food is nothing particularly to write home about. It's pretty standard seafood options with the average price you'd expect ~$15 per plate. That being said, you usually do get a fair amount of food. I like the scampi but wish it came with pasta. The service is pretty good and usually doesn't take too long to get sat or your food. Both times I've come in it's been pretty empty so maybe that's why. The restaurant we intended to visit was full for the night and we are so grateful we ended up at Joey's by chance. We had the best time here! She even offered to have certain seafood selections customized to our liking, even if they weren't on the menu that way. The drinks were tasty, fun and very affordable. The food was incredible. The crab rangoon actually tasted like there was crab in it, the garlic and parsley potatoes were cooked evenly and had the perfect amount of seasoning, the onion rings were made by hand and lightly fried to perfection, their warm corn muffins were crispy on the outside and deliciously moist inside, and their signature fried fish was the highlight of the night. It was juicy, tender and tasted like heaven. I reply hope I didn't catch them on a "good night", because I will be dreaming about this exact meal until the next time I'm in town. Loved this place!!!! We went twice when we were staying in Houghton. This is the third time we've been to Houghton, MI and the first time we have tried this restaurant and it was awesome. I wish we would have tried it sooner as every dish I had was great. The place doesn't look that appealing from the outside, which is why it took so long to try it, but the inside is really clean and decorated cute. The service was awesome. First night I had the Bayou Alfredo with gumbo which was so delicious. Second visit, I had the steak and shrimp with the gumbo also very delicious. They have a great drink selection and decent dessert menu as well. My husband had the fish something the first night and the fish tacos the second night. He loved the fish dish the first night, but would have tried another selection the second night instead of the fish tacos. He said they were good but nothing spectacular. He loved the gumbo. The prices were a little higher than average but worth the price and you can taste the quality. I wanted to try everything on the menu. I travel to Houghton 5-6 times a year for work and Joey's is one of my local favorites. It's a cool little place right in the downtown area with tons of parking. The food and service is always excellent! Go the classic fish and chips and you won't be disappointed. The batter is light and flaky, and portions fill the biggest eaters.
