This was our first time trying this restaurant out, while taking the train from Albuquerque to visit The Harvey House Muesum. It is right across the street. So glad we decided to stop in. There were 7 of us and even our pickiest eater was happy. The food was delicious! It is fresh products and homemade. Not food and worth waiting for, although it didn't take long either. The portions were generous, the prices were fair, the service was great, and there were many regular customers. Our entire group highly recommends Pete's Cafe. My aunt said to note thay we are now "valued customers" and we will be returning when in the area. read more

Been a patron of the Torres family's restaurant in Los Lunas, "Teofilo's" since it opened in 1985. Some time later, I found out that the some of the family owned "Pete's Cafe" in Belen. I had always meant to try Pete's out, but it just never happened. We moved out of state for a time, but came to visit every year, and made Teofilo's a priority. When we moved back into the state, we stopped at Teofilo's every once in a while when we traveled. Still, hadn't gotten a chance to try Pete's, until this weekend! Finally, we were on our way home and stopped for a late lunch. It was maybe 3-ish. Hardly anyone there, which was nice. Quiet. I ordered my favorite, chile relleno. It was different than Teofilo's. Though it had a crunchy exterior, they used two different types of cheese, and also chopped potato, as stuffing. It was ok. The sopaipillas were yeasty tasting. Which was ok. The calabacitas could have been better, like chopped, and had green chile (there was none), and more cheese made into a sauce. Instead it was large chunks of squash drenched in water. The stuffed sopaipillas were pretty good. But.... the salsa was TDF!! They need to sell that stuff by the jar!! Service was decent. Anyway, it was nice, pleasant, and the food wasn't great, but it was very good. Will def try again when we can, hopefully it won't take 40 years!! :O read more

Visiting from out of state and had dinner here. It's a large restaurant with lots of seating and friendly staff. The carne adovada was hands down the BEST I have had during my visit to New Mexico. I even went to a "must visit" restaurant in Santa Fe which always has a line out the door and was disappointed with the service and food- carne adovada, shrimp app. To me, the "must visit" Santa Fe restaurant just turns tables as fast as they can and due to the volume of patrons the quality of food is just blah. Save yourself the waste of time in SF and go to Pete's cafe! read more

Food was not good. Ordered chili relleno plate. The batter was over cooked almost burnt. Even if cooked correctly it wasn't right for relleno batter. The chili was tuff. My family owned a Mexican restaurant growing up in McMinnville Oregon and this was a disappointment here in New Mexico the hatch chili kingdom. Had lunch here today & had the shrimp tacos & they were delicious! Served on flour tortillas with tomatoe & lettuce/ cabbage mix with Chipotle sauce.....with rice & beans. I asked for sauce on side. Very well seasoned & not spicy & they were generous with the shrimp. I'll get these again. read more

Food/ entrees were really good. Please add more "adult" beverages" to your menu. Also please instruct Servers in Food Allergies! We asked our Server if there was milk in the Flan due to a lactose allergy and she said No! Then she served the milk filled Flan topped with whipped cream to my husband who is Lactose intolerant...OMG. Please educate your Servers!!! Glad I was aware of the milk in it!! read more

Great food, great service and affordable. We don't get down to Pete's in Belen very often. We are always very satisfied with the food, atmosphere and service. This is a great local restaurant decorated in typical Southwest theme. I came in ready to do a great review with great pictures but when the food came we ate. I realized much too late to take a picture. Sorry I was hungry and it was very good. We started with their chips and salsa. I was able to get a quick picture before we all gobbled it up. I love their salsa! It has great flavor and a mild bite. You can taste the cilantro and onion. My hubby and I both had the shrimp tacos. They are my favorite with the chipotle sauce. Great flavor and not too spicy. My son had the beef torta with calabacitas. It was as great with some salsa. The red chili today was really hot. I love their calabacitas! They are my favorite. And of course we gobbled up the sopas with honey. I got a picture of the last one before my son grabbed it. read more

First time ever dining here. My coworker who is a local in Belen told me about this place. I was curious about it so I decided to give them a try. I was told walking in there would be a 15 minute wait so I was fine with that and waited. Soon as a table became available they lead me into the dining room. It was about 10 minutes before I even saw my waitress. There was another woman going around filling drinks even brought me mine, and some chips and salsa. She was more attentive to me than my waitress. By the time the waitress came around I was ready to order. After that I didn't see her for over 30 minutes until she brought my food out. I was almost ready to walk out. I had ordered the Cheese Enchilada plate w/ green chili that came with some rice and beans. The chili wasn't too hot which I appreciated. It was delicious! The rice had cheese on top which was awesome. Same with the beans. By the time I finished I was ready for my check which was promptly brought out but then it was about 10 minutes waiting on my waitress to return before I ended up seeing another customer get up and coke up to the counter at the front to pay their check. I ended doing the same. Other than the slow service, the food was pretty good at a fair price. I would consider returning. read more

This a surprisingly big place! It has several dining areas around a central kitchen. The ambiance is uniquely New Mexican. The food was good and the service wonderful. Went in for dinner waited for a hour and half for our food. Had an other waitress come and take are order after waiting for an hour another 30 minutes the waitress then they kept telling us that they had a big party and our food would be right out I heard that five times within an hour and a half. We had manager came over after I asked the waitress how much longer was our food gonna be ? the manger came up to was very rude to us. I told her everyone around his had already been served. Someone who came in behind us got their food before us.We never got our food so we left . The next day I called to speak to the owner and she was just as rude When I mentioned that the that night was partly the owner according to her, but then again she didn't even know if it was I said that's pretty sad if that's how they treat their customers I would rather go to Las Lunas to have a meal and she rudely hung up on me! Apparently it's not the same Pete's Café not like when the wife and husband used to run it. I don't know who's running it now, but I won't ever go back and I'll make sure every friend and family knows how badly customers.Their portions are little and way overpriced anyway.. Apparently they can't handle a table of 2 or any other customers if they have a large party. With Belen growing I guess if they continue to treat their customer so rudely they'll even have less customers. read more

Bottom Line: Coconut pie good enough to be remembered over the years (literally) and worth the 45 minute drive from Albuquerque. Other food is good too & service is friendly. Their food punches above its price point. Top Line: A few years ago some friends & I came down to visit the Harvey House museum across the street from Pete's Cafe in Belen NM. We grabbed lunch at Pete's Cafe first. I recall the New Mexican food as being quite good. But I happened to order dessert that day and ordered their coconut cream pie. It was an epiphany! One of those dishes that thereafter redefines your entire expectations of what that dish *should* be. An experience that resets the bar & gold standard higher whenever you again consider eating that exact food. The coconut cream pie I had then was so packed with shredded coconut meat that the slice on my plate was dense & substantial. It was a solid (vs fluffy or pudding creamy) slab o' pie. There was so much coconut meat in it that the filling had a granular, almost cakelike, texture that took to the fork with a brownie heavy density. But the meringue top was as cloudlike fluffy as you'd hope. So utterly different was that piece of pie from the usual coconut cream pie (vanilla'ish or coconut'ish pudding dumped in a blind baked crust, then topped with whipped cream & a sprinkling of toasted, if you're lucky, coconut shreds), that across the intervening years I've often thought from the road with great fondness of that slice of coconut heaven and longed to return to Pete's Cafe to see if I could get a repeat on the level of quality that I remembered. Well, today was the day and Pete's delivered. The slice of pie I had today was as substantial and flavorful and exquisite as I remembered. Sometimes wishes do come true!!! Chips were crispy and salsa was extremely fresh tasting, though without much spiciness to it. Its texture was tomato puree. With no indication of pico de gallo ingredients except cilantro, its lack of heat is understandable. My dining partner shared a dab of their green chile stew, to which they'd added beans. It was nicely flavorful, but had very little chile heat to it. Our orders of tea came as a tea bag accompanied by hot water in the cup & a small metal pot containing more hot water for a fill-up if needed. Service was friendly, conscientious in attentiveness, and efficient. Great staff. Our waitress, who's worked there for decades, gave us a quick history on the business and founding family that was very much appreciated. Pete's building is a gorgeously appointed restoration. The architecture & artwork alone justify the journey from Albuquerque to me. To dine in such stunning surroundings is a joy. My next trip to Pete's that I may again partake of their world changing pie will definitely not take a few years to happen. Lesson learned. read more

I was so looking forward to having good Lenten meal. I called to place an order of 4; I asked what all comes with it. I was told chicken enchiladas . Then I asked if rice comes with it because my mom didn't want rice, she wanted calabacitas; she said no, rice does not come with the meal. When picking up the order, the waiting/pickup area was packed and distancing was not being enforced. When we got home and opened the styrofoam container, we were disappointed, maybe 2 bites of beans and yes, it did come with rice. Not worth $54 read more
