Pete's is a must go to place when you visit Belen. Food is great. Also, make sure to ask them which chile is hotter for the day (red or green)..It usually depends on the day. On my first day of trying out Pete's, I thought red would be hotter but alas it was the green chile that was hotter. Second time, I went there I chose the right chile sauce. Red was hotter the second time I went. Ambiance is also great. If you get seated in the back corner where all the private rooms are, you get more privacy. Also, the sopapillas are amazing! read more

First time there . It was just ok. Had the shrimp tacos. On the two tacos , there were a total of 8 smallish shrimp. The sauce was very good as were the beans and calebecitas. Their wine list leaves much to be desired. No beer on tap either. The salsa was vey bland. The service was outstanding!!! I give them kudos for practicing safe Covid mandates. Our family had been going to Pete's for years, and last night will be the last. Upon arrival it was cash only and very slow, but it took a very long time to place our food order. Despite asking for salad before the meal, it came after and the lettuce was so large that you had to fold it like an accordian to eat, a la carte items were never delivered, the steak was horrible and the knife provided could barely cut it, never got refills on water or tea during the main course of the meal and were charged for all items even those that we didn't receive. I was asked by the young waitress if I had a problem with the food and I told her that it was not what I expected and she took it back to the kitchen, and out came a young waiter (with a very bad attitude) stomping the wood floors in a fast pace up to the table saying you have a problem with the steak, and I said yes it's horrible. The bill was not adjusted for poor quality, lack of receiving ordered items (eggs on enchiladas, chile rellenos, etc) but they were sure to add gratuity....$152.24 for for adults and a child. Great job young staff, way to make the family proud by running the place into the ground. Seriously, it's pretty evident in the reviews that its going downhill in a hurry. read more

Pete's is the nicest place in town to take friends or visiting family or just for a great date, or anytime. They serve traditional New Mexico style Mexican food. The atmosphere is a nice New Mexican themed space with lots of beautiful artwork on its classic adobe interior walls. The staff is always friendly and excellent. They are adding a patio which will be a lovely addition. I have not eaten everything on the menu but the food is consistently good. They have been consistently in business for many decades making traditional New Mexican cuisine. Start off with some chips and salsa. The salsa is great and so is the guacamole. I personally take a pass on the ground beef tacos (how is it possible to not have a good ground beef taco?). Their Chilé Rellenos are not my favorite either (the batter is weird). Otherwise I have mostly liked everything else on the menu. The portions are generous. The food is always fresh. My personal favorite is the Stuffed Sopapilla and I get it smothered Christmas Style (1/2 red chilé, 1/2 green chilé). If you are not a hardcore chilé person, I recommend you order chilé on the side at Pete's, it is often very hot. There are no tequila Margaritas because they only have a beer and wine license. They have a wine margarita on the menu but I have not tried it. I love their freshly made desserts (Natillas is my favorite) and be sure to grab a bag of Biscochito on your way out to enjoy at home. This place was ok. Dinner for five. First of all, we arrived around 6ish, and did not get out until around 8:30. The service was ridiculously slow, despite not being too busy. I ordered the steak fajitas. It was alright. The steak was very tough and chewy, and it came with one tortilla, lettuce and tomatoes, and refried beans. This is a weird complaint, but everything came piled on a tiny, tiny plate-which was kind of annoying because I was using pieces of the (one) tortilla to make the fajitas, but had nowhere to put the rest of the tortilla. It was a bit awkward trying to eat the meal. The beans were fine. My mother in law ordered the steak medium rare and it came like a hockey puck. Meh. For the location (middle of nowhere), it's fine. I'd rather drive out the extra 15-20 minutes to get more authentic Mexican food for half the price off a cart. read more

My husband's cheese enchiladas were a cheesy warm delight. Our server, Britney, was wonderfully attentive and walked us through the finer points of warm sopadillas. I had some friends who told me I had try Pete's and some friends tell me it's not good so I had to try it for myself. First impression: We were seated quickly but took 10 minutes before we got any water or menus. Besides that first 10 minutes the service was good. The salsa: This salsa was very bland and without a bite to it. I've tried salsa's all over the state and this is not even in the top 20. On the bright side the chips were fresh and crispy. I ordered a 2 beef stuffed sopapilla plate Christmas style, my girlfriend ordered a huevos rancheros plate Christmas style and we got a basket of sopapillas. The green is very weak and bland, kinda like a thick lettuce. The red had a good taste but it was so dang watery is sogged out the sopapilla it was on. The ground beef was very broken up and was bland. My girlfriend's take one her plate was similar to my feelings about the food here. A couple of things I did like was the sopapillas and honey and the prices were fairly cheap, but other than that I doubt we will ever be back. read more

If you love the flavor of salt, and I really mean SALT, then this place for is for you. I have been to Pete's for the last 28 years and for the past 27 they have had authentic Mexican food. This last year my family stopped going, but I insisted, since I am home for the HOLIDAYS. What a mistake I made! The bowl of posoli I ordered was a bowl of hot salt water, with over salted pork in it. I told the waitress, and even though she asked if she could bring something else, "a bowl of beans", which was not what I wanted, I said no thank you. They had the gull to charge my father the full PRICE OF THE UNEATEN, OVER PRICED BOWL OF POSOLI!! Asked to speak to a manager, waited and waited, he/she never showed up. We ended up leaving! I had the steak and enchilada special . It was amazing , the steak was cooked perfectly and the red chile was perfect . The avocado salad my grandparents ordered were very lack luster , it was literally just a small handful of shredded lettuce and a few slices of avocado and chips on the side . I ordered a margarita and let's just say it just tasted like a terrible cherry limeade with no trace of tequila , I will not order a margarita there again . We had eaten a number of times at Pete's in the past when we had business in Belen. We remembered the food as being quite good. It's changed. First the good: Chips were warm, fresh, tasty, with moderate salt and not greasy. The red chile on the enchiladas was good and "just right" spicy. The place is very nice inside and the bathrooms among the cleanest I have seen outside of very pricy places. Red chile enchiladas were okay. Sopapillas were fine. Downside: Salsa was canned tomatoes with little or no chile. Chile Rellenos had a good chile flavor, but were the blandest chiles I have ever eaten in NM. I questioned the waitress and she informed me that the restaurant never goes above "medium" in heat. Nice flavor, but they needed to kick it up a notch. Beans with dinner were extremely bland; probably the worst I have had. Spanish rice was a joke. Price was on the high side for the quality of food. Probably Pete's is set up for the Tourists who come to the Harvey Museum. I would drop it to One Star, except for the cleanliness. read more

I know it seems a little over-board to give such a modest place 5 stars but let me explain... My family has bee going here for a few decades and I have to say, I get cravings for Pete's ALL THE TIME! While the prices were reasonable, the service was really sub-par with long waits for refills of drinks and for our entrees. In Belen for the first time and Pete's is a real treat. I thought the food was very good, I had the relleno's with rice and beans, all very good. I also had the chicken enchilladas and they were very good as well. The salsa with the chips was not spicy but that's ok for the milder taste buds. Instead just have the red chili and you'll love it. My server is Jaime and she is really on the ball, the staff is very attentive and always seem to be looking to help. Enjoyed the experience very much! read more

The service was subpar and they also overcharged me and tied my money up on my card twice on account that they would not communicate with me regarding their error prior to charging me, and then wouldn't bite a $.46 bullet to give me what I paid for. The phone rang and then the gal who sat us proceeded to talk on the phone while she was nodding us to follow her. She continued to talk on the phone as she lead us to our table. The. She walked away. Very disappointed. We have eaten at Pete's for 20 or 30 years, and they were always the go to place in Belen for authentic New Mexico cuisine. My wife was a waitress there many years ago. She is a vegetarian, so because so many New Mexican dishes are vegetarian (meat was always a luxury), it has been our place to splurge and have a nice meal together. Today, we ordered dinner to go - we live a ways out of town but stopped in Belen for dinner - and ordered two Chili Relleno plates with green chile as usual. When we got home, my wife realized that instead of the usual green chile on our order, Pete's had dumped a scoop of green chile stew, with potatoes, ground beef, etc. on our chile rellenos. We called Pete's, and they said that is what they do now unless someone specifically requests a vegetarian dish. Some people may like this non-traditional New Mexican dish, but you should have to request it rather than expect a traditional dish and get Pete's new idea of what you should eat. read more
