Whoever said you can't have something good and fast has never been to Pete's. This neighborhood diner seats no more than 20 people at the counter and has great food for a greasy spoon. The lively, fun atmosphere brings me back to the era of "Cheers". I wouldn't be surprised if they name the seats for the regulars. The hours are short. Seriously one of the best breakfast places ever. They basically have a build your own breakfast kind of set up which is really great. It's inexpensive and fast. There is always a wait after ten, but the staff does a great job of making sure people are getting in and out in a timely manner without you feeling rushed. I admittedly have never been to eat lunch here so I cannot comment of their lunch food (they have burgers). While it is really small, they serve up some of the tastiest breakfast dishes in the area. The burgers are really good, but a little on the greasy side. It is a great value and I would come here more often if the parking was easier and there was more seating. I find it difficult to eat on a counter stool with people all around. Ordered uber eats from here, it was only about a 15 minute drive but by the time I got my food, the fries and bacon, tomato grilled cheese were soggy. They were also both pretty salty.. I usually get breakfast there, and my eggs are cooked just right, over medium, every time. So if you don't mind paying cash and sitting on a stool at the counter, at Pete's Grille, if order it one time, like it, then order another time, you're going to get it the same way because they are consistent. Pete's is a great place to become a regular. If you live in the neighborhood, I would recommend going whenever you get the chance. It's definitely worth it. I don't think there is anything bad on the menu, but after a few times you figure out exactly how to order. Portions aren't small and, since you don't want to go with more than one or two other people, don't over order. You'll end up leaving a ton of food on the counter and paying too much. I've gone there often with my boyfriend for both breakfast and lunch and we always leave stuffed. Their burgers are delicious (definitely go with the fried onions) but even their simple grits keep us coming back. Pete's also has a loyalty card which offers a free meal for patrons who frequent the Grille often enough. The one setback to Pete's is the hours. Many people complain about the wait to sit, but I believe that aspect is a whole part of Pete's atmosphere. The Grille closes at 1 PM which is especially frustrating on the weekends. If they were to stay open just a few hours later so many more people could enjoy this great little place. Finally, don't forget- CASH only. read more

The end of an era at Pete's. We are 3 hardworking neighborhood people who (along with our family and friends) will never go there again. Pete's used to be our favorite place to eat in Baltimore, a great place to relax at the week's end every Saturday morning after the farmer's market. Over almost twenty years, we've seen owners come and go, and each time it's been a pretty smooth transition, but under this new management and new rules - the main one being "to hell with the customer; the dollar is king; the seating chart preempts common sense" - Pete's is a huge disappointment. Over the years, we became familiar with the staff; they knew who we were and got to know what we ordered (We even supported the waitress Debbie when she and her sister left Pete's and opened a nearby restaurant, Two Sisters Grille I believe it was, frequently bringing our family and out of town guests there to eat). On their busiest days, Pete's always made an effort to make sure the three of us were seated as soon as the seats opened up (or were very close to opening up, in which case they would hold off seating two people who came in after us if it seemed that one of those seats could be added to two other seats opening up and would allow the three of us to sit down). We knew seating at the counter could be tricky and that we would sometimes have to wait a while, but we also knew the waitresses were aware of who was finishing up and that they were always trying to find a way to get us seated. Because of this, we didn't mind the wait. We, on the other hand, always made sure we tipped the waitresses well, gave extra tips on birthdays and holidays, and tried to be aware of our time at the counter and others waiting to sit down. Today, they were so intent on following the rules that no effort was made to see that we were seated. Finally, after quite a wait, when two seats opened up, two of us sat down, and when the two seats next to us opened up, where our 3rd person could sit down, they called "party of two," and refused to let our friend sit down . . . even, I would add, when the people they called to sit down said they would wait because we were there first and had been waiting so long. We've seen people walk out before, but they were usually folks who didn't understand how the seating worked at Pete's. Today, we walked out because we do understand, and couldn't understand the disrespect that was shown to us. Well, things change, but karma, as they say, is a "b***h." The reality is that there are more things to life than the dollar, loyalty being one of them. What used to be a good thing at Pete's has gotten lost, but that's on them. Management should watch how it deals with customers because it certainly doesn't hurt us in any way. There are so many good places to eat in the city, we would never spend another dollar at a place that doesn't respect its customers. Today we went over to One World (where we often go for dinner) and the breakfast and service was wonderful. Pete's loss, our gain. read more

I usually just get a classic burger with LTO and mayo. There is only takeout and counter service here. In fact, you can watch them prepare your food to order. They are cash only and really quick, so you can usually stop in for lunch before they close just after 1pm. You can't find a better burger for $5. read more

Again, it all depends on what you like. Pete's is a diner--no tables, just stools at the counter. The menu is traditional, and you can watch the food being cooked. But if that's what you like, Pete's does a great job of it. It's also one of the few places in Baltimore public life where rich and poor, black and white come together. It's common to see Johns Hopkins grad student sitting next to cops and bus drivers. It's also a place where people eagerly waiting for seats are unfailingly courteous and careful to make sure that people are seated first-come, first-served. read more

We're back in town for a couple of days and you best believe we're stopping at Pete's Grille. Our favorites? Biscuits and gravy, which my husband swears is the best in the city, and blueberry pancakes. The breakfast potatoes are yummy too. This place is no frills, serving simple but hearty breakfasts. The staff is friendly and efficient. Even when there is a line, you're not waiting long. It's also very, very, very clean which is nice; they shut down once a year for a deep cleaning of the place. I just went there today with two of my coworkers. It was my first time. I ordered over medium eggs bacon and hash browns. The food was good but however, while I was waiting I observed the cook cooking my food without gloves. I continued to observe our server Maggie put on gloves while she made our toast, which prompted my coworker to ask Maggie why the cook wasn't wearing gloves. Maggie said the Cook doesn't wear gloves. She told the Cook that customers were requesting he wear gloves. He put the gloves on to finish our meals but as soon as he was done with our food he took the gloves off and continue to cook for the rest of the restaurant. For the record Maggie was the only person to put on gloves while preparing food. The other waitress didn't use gloves at all while making people's toast. I was very uneasy eating the food, I prayed over it longer than I would normally say my blessing. I will not be returning. It's unsanitary for people to cook for the public without gloves. Shame on that cook for preparing food in that way. Not worth the risk. Do better Pete's. read more

I have been here a few times and only for the breakfast, so I cannot comment on the lunch portion of the menu. There is nothing unique or avant-garde about the menu: standard North American breakfast items: pancakes, waffles, eggs of different styles, the usual breakfast meats, egg sandwiches, etc. However, if Baltimore could brag a few more of these places, it would help put the Charm back in Charm City. Not only will you walk away satisfied, but you will have a 'real' Baltimore experience. The seating are stools along a lengthy counter with no division among individuals or groups. Be prepared to accidentally elbow and be elbowed by neighboring patrons. You will also overhear several conversations from the currently unemployed, blue color workers, and PhD students. My fiancee's neighbors swapped stories about adventuring in the world of Dungeons and Dragons while my neighbors were recommending museum exhibits to one another. Also, we were treated to a man in a long black wool coat stepping into the establishment, raising his arms then announcing, "May the Lord bless and keep you all!" Apparently, he's a regular since a lady behind the counter addressed him by first name and informed him that the police would be called if he didn't leave. He didn't leave immediately, but remained with his hands folded and mumbled unintelligibly. He eventually left and, to my knowledge, the police were never summoned. You get a full sense of the cross section of classes in the city as the proletariat and the opulent crowd each other for counter space. What we ordered: Blueberry Pancakes - Nice, fluffy, filling. There's just something comforting about large pancakes with blueberries cooked inside, dripping with butter and syrup. An order of three thick and fluffy pancakes will definitely tide you over until lunch and possibly even dinner. Turkey Sausage - We choose turkey sausage over pork sausage whenever it's available. We both put a lot of effort in losing a combined total of 100 lbs. As much as we like to dine out, we find ways to cut a few calories here and a few grams of fat there. We shared the three links and if all turkey sausage was this good, the pork industry would be seriously hurting. Blueberry waffle - I have been wanting to order one of these since my first visit. I would watch a cook pull one from the waffle iron and slap it on a plate, the four corners jutting over the edge of the plate, then dump a handful of fresh blueberries over top. PROS - firm, crisp outside and doughy inside and deep craters for holding pools of flavorful syrup. CONS - You just can't spread butter over waffles and in the end, I like the blueberries cooked inside the batter. One egg, over medium - Done to perfection: not overdone with a hardened yolk and not underdone with a completely runny snot-like yolk. You can cut it up with a fork. Would I go again? Definitely and fairly soon. You might have trouble getting seated with a party larger than two and you may have to bring a magazine for the wait as you stand directly behind the seated people who are already jammed in shoulder to shoulder. read more
