I was in the mood for a breakfast sandwich and found myself by Charles Street Market. It was a cold one, and all of the side entrances were locked so I thought I was out of luck. Glad I stayed persistent. I visited Steve's for the first time, and ordered a scrapple, egg & cheese on white toast. I devoured that thing so fast, I decided to order another sandwich, this time with sausage, and that one may have been even better. Last December we visited the Cross Street Market for the first time, a bit before xmas. We were looking for something quick, but filling for lunch, during our break between mental health appointments. (Your mental health is important! Don't slack on those therapy appointments!) Originally I thought that we would return at some point in the future, but now that we've gotten to know the neighborhoods a little better, I'm more excited to try different restaurants along Key Highway, especially if we don't have to pay to park in a garage. Jeremy ended up ordering a cheesesteak (American cheese, grilled onion) from Steve's Lunch. It was a decent sandwich. If you like cheesesteaks, you'll probably like this one. If you are picky about cheesesteaks, this one might be on the line for you. Jeremy gets hardly any toppings on his sandwich, leaving "nothing to hide behind" but I'll admit I like everything on my cheesesteaks. I ordered elsewhere, so I can't give you the report on whether their tomatoes were pale and tasteless, or if the lettuce was rotten. All I know is that I had a bite of this sandwich and could have finished the entire thing. Something about this place reminds me of days gone by. I could imagine blue collar workers grabbing a bite here, and being quite satisfied. The nostalgia hits hard. read more

Came inside Cross Street Market for a bite. It was between Steve's or Chicken Lab. My fiancée convinced me to go with Steve's since they're usually closed when we're here. It did not disappoint. This might be my third time here. I usually get the cheesesteak lunch special that comes with a drink and fries ($13). I'm glad they were busy because the staff appears hard working and the food here is very good. The cheesesteak roll was soft and chewy, and the oils and grease did not seep through. I got onions and provolone and as you can see from the photos, the sandwich was hot and fresh, with a nice stretch from the cheese. The fries had a nice color, crispy on the outside, but soft and chewy on the inside. This meal hit the spot. There is plenty of seating inside CSM. It's meh. The set up, service, and food are just meh. The prices aren't that crazy considering the food is less than average. The hamburger was dry and seemed like it had died in a freezer months ago. There was a decent attempt made on the sausage egg and cheese on wheat. No fuss, no frills, just an older man and his griddle cooktop. You get your order in and you leave in an exchange of few words. Steve's Lunch is far from glamorous, but it is fast, and when you just wanna walk down the street with burger and fries in hand before you get back to your shift, Steve's has your back with some of the thickest kaiser rolls I've seen. It actually works great, since all of the mess you'd get with a weaker bun is contained by the roll; this is, in a word, perfect stroll snacking. It's the cheapest food in the entire Cross Street Market, too, which is probably its niche. I can't hate it, but I wish the fries were seasoned a bit more evenly. What you might expect for a quick diner bite. I got the egg, bacon, and hashbrown breakfast. The price was excellent- $8.48! The customer service was great. The meal was cooked fresh to order and didn't take long to prepare at all. The hash browns were delicious. The bacon, a bit salty. The eggs were very bland. The food is great, their hotdogs are fresh and their lemonade is amazing, the staff are super nice, and the prices are so affordable, I got two hotdogs one fish fillet a box of fries and two small lemonades, and it was all under $25! Came here with hubby for a quick lunch. We both got cheesesteak and fries. I normally don't eat cheesesteak so when I have a taste for one it's like get it. We came to this spot in cross street market cause we were in the neighborhood. Nice spot. The cheesesteak wasn't over stuffed which is fine. The taste was fresh and good . The fries were made so well. You'll be amazed how many ppl mess up a fry. Let me tell you though, I looked to my left and a man had a plate of fries and gravy. Steve's Lunch has been a staple in Cross Street Market. Every time I grab lunch here, it keeps getting better. This is a no frills place, but why mess with something that isn't broken? They have great lunch specials including fries and a drink with select sandwiches. I usually get the meatball or chicken sub and then split fries (since the order can be pretty large). Even with a smaller menu, there is sure to be something for everyone to enjoy! They recently started serving breakfast as well which is game changer. Steve's is one of the original vendors from Cross Street Market and I'm so glad they made a debut in the new renovated market !! read more

(6/28/2016) Was waiting for my car to get serviced on a weekday morning at Firestone and wandered over to Cross Street Market just to see what was open. Surprisingly, a lot at 9 am. Bruce Lee Wings and Nick's were tempting, but I went straight through past the butchers and fishmonger to the Light Street side and found Steve's Lunch. Usually we're here on a football Sunday drinking quart beers at Nick's raw bar or happy hour in the evenings and this part of the market is closed. There were 3 ladies working the counter, classic Bawlmer hons. There were several service and night shift staff coming in for their "lunches" or "dinner." Plenty of regulars, greeted by name and sandwiches already started before they ordered. Got a standard breakfast sandwich: sausage, egg, American cheese, on wheat toast. They use straight up shell eggs here. Bread was lightly toasted, very soft, like Wonder bread (not necessarily a bad thing in this case). Sausage patty was fatty, salty, peppery. This place is pretty solid. Went here yesterday with Pat when we couldn't find a place to sit for sushi, and we weren't let down! We got two sandwiches, fries, and two drinks for under $10. You can't beat that, unless you're eating at McDonalds. And if you are, wtf is wrong with you. My club was good. The bacon was crisp, which I enjoyed greatly. The fries were good too. Steve's Lunch sits inside the Cross Street Market, within walking distance of M&T Stadium and Camden Yards. You can park yourself at their indoor counter and look over the other vendors' stalls while you enjoy some traditional greasy spoon food. It was about 1:00pm when I got there, but they were still happy to serve up an egg, sausage and cheese sandwich. If I worked in the Federal Hill neighborhood, or if I were on my way to a Ravens game, this would be my spot for a casual lunch. read more

Why is it so hard to find a traditional Philly style hoagie (that's Philadelphian for sub) here in Baltimore? I'm mean the city of Philadelphia is just an hour and forty-five minutes away from here for chrissake. I've been living here for almost ten years now and I've eaten at dozens of sandwich/sub shops here in Bmore, yet I still haven't found a sandwich that sends me home in one bite. Sure, I've had good panini, tasty club-style sandwiches, even a delectable hot sub every once and awhile, but I've never come across a real, authentic Philly-style hoagie--meaning deli-fresh meat and cheese layered on top a drop dead delicious roll and then covered with onions, lettuce, peppers, olive oil and vinegar. Sorry I'm getting sandwich-tracked....I mean side-tracked away from what I'm supposed to be reviewing here--Steve's Lunch Counter. Anyway, whenever I need to settle and get a half-decent hoagie from somewhere close to my house, I usually pick Steve's Lunch Counter. When all is said and done, it may be the closest thing I'll get to a real Philly Style hoagie here in Bmore. The meats are fresh, the roll isn't half bad, and the hots (Philadelphian for hot peppers) actually provide a nice kick to any sandwich. The ladies that work there, though, still give me the ol' wtf eyes whenever I ask for olive oil and vinegar. Anyway, the best part about Steve's is that it's dirt cheap. You usually can get a 8 inch hoagie with Utz chips (Bmore can do its chips though) and a drink for $6, which is really a good deal. What I really love about Steve's, though, are the breakfast sandwiches they serve up in the morning. They're making everything fresh right there on griddle and it makes for my favorite breakfast sandwich in Federal Hill hands down. I'm not exaggerating; I wish they were open on weekends more so I can get my bacon, egg, and cheese fix there more often. read more

This is the **only** vendor in Cross Street Market not following proper protocol during Covid. Every other shop has masks on and sanitary measures in place, yet at Steve's Lunch the staff are standing over a hot grill and an open cash register with their masks not covering their noses. Steve's Lunch, please: *you have to cover your nose with the mask for it to be effective.* This is unacceptable behavior, and they're compromising the safety and well-being of ALL the vendors in Cross Street Market by not operating safely. I've been here for lunch the past 10 years hundreds of time. The lunch specials are the best value in Federal Hill. The Hoagies are large enough to fill you up and the fries are hot and made to order. The hot dogs are perfect. Breakfast sandwiches are large and fresh. First, I'm generally not going to give sandwich shops of this genre more than three stars. It's just the nature of what they're serving that doesn't warrant a higher rating. This shop is located at one of of the Cross Street Market. Despite all the moaning from locals, parking in the area is not bad. They make your sandwich to order, specializing in hoagies, hot or cold. That being said, our party of four ordered a chicken filet, a fish filet, a grilled cheese and a meatball sub special (includes fries and a jumbo soda) all for $26.05. There's plenty of seating and the ladies behind the counter call out your order when ready. It's fast, easy and the food is fine. I wished the others had ordered fries as they ate all of mine! If I worked in the area, this would be a "go to" spot for brekkie and lunch. read more

If you happen to find yourself in South Baltimore with a hankering for a cheesesteak, Steve's is the clear winner. Magerk's and Fat Larry's are fine in a pinch, but not memorable. What makes Steve's a cut above is the bread, which is on point: soft and delicate, with a crusty edge and a dusting of cornmeal. Honestly, one of those rolls with a frozen Steakum and a Kraft Single would have made a half decent sandwich. Philly purists may be disappointed to find that Cheez Whiz is not an option, but in this case it's not a drawback. My steak was made with some kind of white American, which was just right. It melts into the steak and onions, cloaking them in a velvety robe of cheesy, savory goodness.
