I have to say, this is one of the better shanghai style restaurant on this side of the river. I highly recommend their dim sim, but have my reservation towards their entree menu. Let's start with the pro: 1. Fry dough: freshly made every weekend, crispy, but not to hard to chew. Some of the best quality in tristate period. 5 star! 2. Pork steam bun: one of the better ones, but not over the top. The skins are thin, which is a must. The meat how ever, I would use ground pork loin for better flavor. The juice and taste is right on the money, not too fatty or salty. I would give it a four star. 3. Toasted Chinese pan cake: some of the best that I have had. The dough is raised to perfection before going to the oven. The skin is super crispy but not burnt. The white sesame seed on the outside of the skin gives additional flavor and aroma which just makes you want to devour it. Combine with the fry dough, you have a winner. 5 star. 4. Scallion pan cake: talk about authentication! The smell along tells you that you hit the jack pot. The pan cakes are pan fried to perfection and best eat hot. You have to try them. 5 stars. Cold dishes: 1. Jelly fish heads with celery: some of the best, although the grade of the jelly fish is not top quality(the top ones cost around 10-15 $ per lb), they still did a good job balancing the flavor. 4 star. Highly recommended if you are into jelly fish. 2. Smoked fish, shanghai style: excellent. It reminds me of my grandma. The fish is deep fried, then dunked into a sauce made of soy sauce, brown sugar, fried green onion and thicken up with starch. 3. Salted duck: my personal favorite. Have to try it! This place has become so so so BAD. Used to come here a lot a few years ago bc their Shiao long baos weren't bad for the area. Then my sister pointed out the cockroach reviews and I immediately stopped coming. I was in the neighborhood and on the verge of hangry, so decided to go in to get some soup dumplings again. Boy did I wish I never stepped foot in. Their pork soup dumplings tasted nasty. It tasted literally of some type of mush (didn't even taste like pork) and so much white pepper. It seemed like whoever made the dumplings went ham on the white pepper. It was so terrible I stopped eating after 2. Got some other random dishes but was either too salty or doused in other marinades to mask the dishes true flavor. Horrendous experience. I am never coming back no matter how hungry I am. read more

Petite soo chow used to be a go to for me and my family but the food and service went downhill. But, after a few months of renovations the place is back on track. This place had angry, hostile service, and REALLY bad tasting food. It took 4 requests to get our water glasses refilled. The meal was served in opposite order, with our entree arriving first, and our appetizers arriving last. My feeling was that the people here also ate in McDonalds and Taco Bell and thought they were eating gourmet American and Mexican. Had to update my review... been here a few more times after my initial review. 1. The soup dumplings are still not my favorite. 2. My gosh! Every time I come, I MUST get the water spinach! This is one of the few Chinese restaurants in the area that is close to what the city has to offer. So I've frequented it despite my initial review. I think my low rating was because of their soup dumplings. They weren't and still aren't my favorite. (Especially with everyone raving about their soup dumplings, my hopes were high and it did not satisfy my needs.) Also...I realized its not that consistent. Some days are much better than others. With that said, I went their recently and their soup dumpling was much better than what I recall that first visit. Also, I ordered the wrong things... they are better at certain dishes than others. After reading Jason Perlow's review on this, I had to try it. I've always been a fan of Xiaolongbao and finding it here in Jersey isn't easy. As a standard I always order Yang Chow fried rice, Pan fried noodles, and the restaurant's specialty, that being Xiaolongbao. I also had the salted pork cops. I was very anxious to try their food. First of all, eating in a sit-down Chinese restaurant is quite rare in Jersey and second, there were plenty of Chinese patrons. Great signs, right? Not really. The food came out quick but fell short of fresh. The vegetables were limp and the color was off. The Xiaolongbao was just OK. And the pork chops were not crispy or salty. This is a very good restaurant for brunch on weekend. The price is reasonable, and you can find decilous food there. We went there before mid-autumn moon festival, and we found that they sold some kind of Su style mooncake. But these decilious mooncakes were sold out already. Not sure why there's always a wait, but been here a few times and each time i'm extremely disappointed by the HORRIBLE service. Waitress have no patience for you if you have questions on the menu and ignore your requests for water, hot sauce, etc. The only time they hear your request is if you ask for the check so that they can kick you out as fast as possible. read more

Wow- what a disappointment. We haven't been back there in a while but from the hot&sour soup to the defensive awful customer service just made me sooo depressed. Instead of even listening to why we thought the soup had no flavor (it was watered down with no "sour" flavor, basically it tasted like black pepper water... ugh) we were told that "something must be wrong with your taste bud"- the girl at the cashier (must be the owner's daughter or someone like that who does not belong in hospitality in my opinion) didn't even want to check out what we were trying to convey to them out of concern! So frustrating! My conclusion is.... Chef must have changed. Where is the owner lady who used to always greet everyone...? The only one I recognized is the dumpling lady, which I must say was the only thing that was still good quality. Staff didn't look happy & the place looked empty compared to before as well. Non-Chinese clientele as a majority, another bad sign. Within the time we were dining, we heard at least 2-3 others complaining about something at the front and I believe one party walked out. Such a drastic turn from about a year ago, we are so sad & will not be recommending the place any longer to anyone, especially our foodie friends. this place we considered a hidden gem is no longer one, too bad! If anyone has an update of the chef or management, please update me! I want to know why.....? Oh, so so sad....
