Terrible place to adopt a puppy. Brought home my brand new pup that cost me $7,900 out the door. The next day I had to take my pup to the vet because he had a kennel cough, aa heart murmur and parasites. The manager stated they only pay for the medication but not the actual visit! They sell diseased and often dying puppies with falsified health certificates and a sham health warranty that isn't worth the paper it's written on. Pet counselors recite scripted answers to questions about the health and origin of their pups (all lies!). Pet counselors work on commission, so they will tell you whatever you need to hear to buy that puppy. Beware of the veterinarian associated with Petland- they are in cahoots and he will intentionally misdiagnose puppies to save Petland money in warranty claims. The breeder videos playing on the screens in the store are staged- that's not where they come from. Be sure to ask them about the isolation room in the back of the store where the animals that are too sick to be sold are denied medical treatment and wait to die. These diseased pups are a public health hazard- just Google Petland and campylobacter outbreaks. How do I know all this? I worked there and I saw and heard it with my own eyes.... do your research! You are supporting the cruel puppy mill industry when you shop at Petland. Both employees went out of their way to assist me with what I was looking for, and were even respectful enough to ask for my approval before giving my pup, Pepper, a treat. Recently our beloved Dachshund Nigel died at 15 years old. Looking for another pet dog and contacted Petland. One of their call center agents contacted us back and said they could set up a play date at the local Petland store. We are retired couple and are on a fixed income. Quality pets of course are not inexpensive, but before we went into the store to look at a dog, we wanted to know what would be the approximate price before we drove to the store. I've been searching for a Shih Tzu for over a month, after doing extensive research, I found several puppies from breeders across several States, including some in Florida, but required extensive traveling. I found puppies ranging in price from $1200.00 to $2000.00 which I felt was reasonable. Since I didn't want to travel great distances for my future furry friend, I decided to look at local pet stores. On Thursday, 07/30, I found a puppy named Hank at a Petland store in Pembroke Pine, Fl, a 4 1/2 hour drive from Tampa, Fl, I called the store for information and pricing and they told me I needed to come into the store (red flag), after further research I found this report on the Humane Society of the United States homepage at, https://www.humanesociety.org/sites/default/files/docs/2008-investigation-report-petland.pdf. On Saturday, 08/01, I called the Pembroke Pine store again to find out if there was a way to get information and pricing for the puppy, they told me I can visit the Petland in Largo, Fl, a 45 minute commute. Before leaving to visit the store, I applied for their financing and was approved through their Petland Credit for $4700.00, an amount I believed would cover the cost of a puppy and more. When I arrived, I was introduced to someone who was finishing up with a previous customer and told me she'll be with me shortly. I guess she wasn't quite finished because someone else approached me with information about (Hank), the puppy I was inquiring about. He stated he was a new hire and would try and assist me, he didn't know much about the puppy, except from what he was reading from the electronic device, it was like someone reading a teleprompter. After several minutes of sidestepping my questions, he left to talk with the person who I was initially introduced to, when she re-approached me, this was her question to me: How much much are you looking to spend on the puppy? My initial response was: Huh, then I told her about the price range from the different breeders ($1200.00 to $2000.00). Then she blurted out, the puppy your inquiring about is $5900.00 and I walked out. Our $6000 Chocolate lab female puppy we purchased back in May has developed a deformity in her skull. Petland refuses to help with the 3,000 cat scan of the puppies head, which now makes her a 9,000 dog. Pet solutions denied all help and referred me to their attorney JC PLANAS. After looking through the paperwork, the puppy didn't come from a top 2% USDA breeder as guaranteed, I reached out to the breeder listed on the paperwork and left a message no call back. I looked further into the paperwork and it revealed the mom and dad of the pup were severely underweight as being in the Labrador breed: female 50lbs male 68lbs. Petland swears by the health and background DNA of their animals and they have done nothing but told stories from the beginning(breeder, health, etc) No one that I have talked to could give any information on anyone higher up in corporate to talk to address this issue further we plan to contact news crews with Skyes story to get the REAL truth out about what is happening with these animals before and after they are sold, to help other people research before buying animals from Petland stores. I walked into Petland when they were at the Largo Mall to observe and play with puppies. My son and I were looking to adopt a dog however I have never purchased a dog. I have been a rescue pet owner previously. We walked in and saw a puppy bouncing in the kennel. Tail wagging, grinning with her tongue hanging, she was very happy. I requested to spend time with this pup and we were directed to the play area. Another customer walked up when the employee (Gabby) was bringing her to play with us demanding that she had come to purchase this specific pup. Gabby told me the cost of the dog, gave us the starter kit and luckily she was ready to come home with us that day. This little puppy, who we named Sally, changed our lives. Providing we purchase her vitamins there we have a lifetime guarantee. If anything should happen to our new family member from the date of adoption through x years we can get a new pup at no charge. When offered pet insurance we accepted, especially since it was "15 day free trial" but it turns out there was actually more paperwork and credit card info needed in order to activate it. Unfortunately and naturally our puppy required an ER visit just 2 days after purchase and once he was "out of the woods" we went to file a claim, only to learn we do NOT have it! One of the many other things they quickly glossed over that sounded like it could have been pet insurance was in fact some sort of help line?! I believe for this big of a purchase with a pets life involved, more time, in a more private, and quiet setting where things are thoroughly explained should be standard protocol. Sitting behind a register at an open pc with other customers all around waiting for their turn, was a chaotic revolving door. On top of that, all the "puppy freebies" are all just gimmicks built in but not itemized that if you have (or have had other dogs) you likely own and should not be forced to "pay" for! The experience started out well with seemingly knowledgeable caring folks but after this I can never recommendPetland, as the most important parts of any transaction are transparency, and customer service, and we experienced neither.
