My kitten has been diagnosed with Feline Panleukopenia (feline distemper) -- a highly contagious and often fatal virus -- and my veterinarian has confirmed she almost certainly had this illness before I ever brought her home. If I could give this place negative 100 stars, I would. This business should not be open. I trusted this store to sell me a healthy kitten, and instead I was sold a severely sick animal that was misrepresented in both age and health. Within days of bringing her home, she became ill, and now I am facing the heartbreaking reality that she may not survive. On top of that, my veterinarian confirmed that she is not even the age they told me she was. I was told she was significantly older, but she is actually no more than around 8 weeks old. This means they either did not know basic information about the animal they were selling or knowingly misrepresented her age to make a sale -- both of which are completely unacceptable. I have already spent over $800 in veterinary bills, and the costs continue to climb -- all because I was sold a kitten who was already infected. Feline panleukopenia has a known incubation period, which makes it clear this did not happen after I got her. She came from this store already sick. This has been one of the most emotionally devastating and stressful experiences I have ever gone through. Instead of enjoying a new pet, I am: * Constantly monitoring her condition * Cleaning up severe diarrhea and illness * Hoping she makes it through each day On top of that, I now have to worry about my other cat being exposed to this extremely contagious virus. No responsible business should ever put someone in a position where they fear for the life of multiple pets because of negligence. I paid $5,000 for a kitten from Petland Novi, expecting a healthy companion. In the two weeks I've had him, he's already had three vet visits and been diagnosed with ringworm, an upper respiratory infection, and a heart murmur. He's only 14 weeks old. It's been incredibly stressful--constant cleaning, medication, isolating him, and trying to protect my other pets. Through my own follow-up, I've received alleged confirmation that he may have originally been shipped from a location with an active ringworm and feline parvo outbreak, where kittens reportedly died. Despite that, he was rerouted to Michigan and sold as healthy. I was told I would receive breed registration paperwork to prove he's a Maine Coon, and that was a major factor in justifying the $5,000 price tag. That promise was quietly walked back after the sale. I never would have agreed to pay that much if I had known he was sick--or that the paperwork wouldn't be provided. I've reached out to Petland and am waiting to see how they choose to handle this. If they make an honest effort to help and take accountability, I will update this review to reflect that. They all looked so cute and I was totally obsessed. They have a great system where you can let a staff member know if you wanted to see a dog and they would let you go into a private enclosure with the puppy you chose. I fell in love immediately with the pug and we requested to see him! I asked an employee how much he was and I was shocked. The price for this pug was $5k....that is insane. It makes it so much harder for anyone to adopt. It comes with all these unecessary stuff like kennel and toys and other stuff. First of all, the puppies are so darn adorable. They're so tiny and sweet and you can play with them and hold them and you aren't rushed. Second, the price tag on these pups are RIDICULOUS. Not sure who in their right mind thought it was a good idea to put a price of $5000+ on these puppies and then have the audacity to "give a coupon of $200 if you see them first to play with the puppy". $200? Rip-off. Third, if I really wanted a certain puppy of that breed or size, I could find a Breeder for half of that price. It's just ridiculous. We purchased a German Shepherd Dog from this store a few days short of a year ago. We don't condone this business and I'm still shocked we bought the puppy, but something about him screamed he needed help. No hair on his eye lids. Umbilical hernia. Full of Giardia and coccidia which got passed around to our other dogs for ten months before we were finally able to eradicate it. The puppy is an anxious, nervy, ball of energy, even for a GSD. Genetic and personality mess from a puppy mill. Not surprising. Likely removed from his mother and littermates too early for human profit. Thousands of dollars later in vet bills and training.... I want to start by saying that I know of some people who have bought puppies from Petland with no problems at all, so this does not apply to every puppy in the store. I just want to share my experience so that maybe someone else won't have to go through the same thing as me. I bought a Shiba Inu puppy with my boyfriend on June 1st. We were told that the puppy came from a breeder and had no health problems because she had already been seen by a vet. Naively, I believed them and we bought her on the spot for about $4000. (Free vet visits were included) The first thing I noticed upon bringing our new puppy home was that her stool was very loose, but they had told me she was healthy so I overlooked it. The diarrhea was on and off from pure liquid to stool that had the texture of pudding. It was never solid. I also noticed that her occasional sneezes turned into coughing and gagging. When we took her to the vet (VCA) associated with Petland, she was diagnosed with giardia which is an intestinal parasite that is spread through feces. After learning this news, I switched to a vet that had no connection with either Petland or VCA. When the new vet looked over our puppy's file, they found something that was given to her while she was in Petland that was labeled as a "preventative." The vet told me that it was her pet peeve, but actually it was a treatment for upper respiratory infection. We were given medicine for her coughing. In the small cages where the puppies are kept, they are kept close to their feces which helps parasites like Giardia spread much easier. They only have to step in it and accidentally lick themselves to instantly infect themselves. Also, if the feces aren't cleaned right away, the exposure to the ammonia in them can cause respiratory problems. The way these puppies are kept and cared for are a huge problem, in my honest opinion. I also want to note that, I read over my puppy's documents and records and found that the breeder named "Pam Habbinga" actually owns a puppy mill. If you search up the name, you can see for yourself. Petland does, in fact, get puppies from puppy mills. Again, there are some people who buy puppies from here with no problems at all, but it isn't everyone. I advise everyone to just be cautious if you are thinking of buying a puppy from here. read more

However, the downside is that the staff here aren't as friendly as the ones at The Family Puppy in Fountain Walk. Facts in which I can prove with the photos I took while in the store.* My first complaint is that the cages were full of dogs, too full in my opinion. 4 yorkies in a cage together, a doodle & a bullet (basset & english bulldog) in a cage together...and numerous other puppies in the same cages. There was room for each dog to sit and lay in the cages, but not to play or enjoy their existence by any means. What angered me the most was the fact that larger puppies were sleeping on grated cage floors. This is not comfortable for humans, so why make puppies sleep in these conditions? The fact that they had no type of bedding to lay on was unacceptable. Do puppies enjoy chewing on things, like bedding? Sure! However, the smaller dogs had bedding, which makes zero sense to me since the larger breed puppies weigh more and need the bedding more than the smaller ones. Second complaint: I was in the store for 7 minutes and not ONCE did an employee even acknowledge me. At least 5 times, an employee was within arms reach of me. No "Hello, welcome to Petland", "Can I help you with anything?", "See anything you like? We offer financing for our overpriced mutts!" (Yes, 'designer dogs" are nothing but glorified mutts)...NOTHING! Poor customer service in my opinion. Third complaint: Many of the cages had feces under the cage grates as well as laying on the grates themselves. A cute little fawn/red boxer puppy was going home with it's new family while I was there. The only thing that ran through my mind was if the new owners investigated the "breeder" (I use that term VERY loosely) that produced that puppy. The fact that the cages are covered in discount signs really worried me. "Bullet 50% off", "Goldendoodle 60% off", "Apply today for the petland credit card", "Yorkiepoo 50% off", "Yorkshire Terrier 60% off", "Yochon 50% off"...are these clearance rack puppies? To my surprise, the store did NOT smell like animal waste. 1 POINT FOR PETLAND! However, this is the only positive point in my review. I have never been to a dog store before and it is the cutest place ever. Surprisingly it is in the 12 oaks mall but it is hard to find because it is in the way back corner of an alleyway. When I got to go to it myself I was shocked with how many different types of puppies there were. It is a pretty small store but they have a nice structure with putting up the puppies. Personally, I would love to buy them but my apartment does not allow it. I came to only observe and see the dogs so I never really interacted with the workers. However, looking how they interacted with customers they seemed friendly and open to take the dogs out. Overall, I think it is a very cute dog store and would recommend everyone to check it out once. Let me first start off by saying that if I could give a negative star, I most definitely would. Today, on June 1st, 2021, myself and my friend were just hanging out at the mall like we would usually do, and we decided to stop into PetLand to look at some dogs since I was looking for one anyway. As we walked into the store, we were looking around at some of the breeds and admiring them, waiting around to be helped. A couple of the staff members walked directly passed us without even saying hello or even just acknowledging out presence. I tried to speak up and inquire about meeting one of the Bernese Mountain dogs, but one of the workers said to me "this breed has just arrived, and we would not be allowed to see him", I immediately said "ok that's fine", and then me and my friend browsed around for another furry friend to meet. As, I came across another breed, in particular this time a brindle Bulldog, one of the workers said to me "are you over 18?", clearly me and my friend are not your average 18-year old's; we are in our mid-twenties. We showed her our id's and then she proceeded to say, "you wouldn't be able to see him due to his breed and his face structure and that they would get overly excited and hyperventilate". I then replied to her and said that other people were able to see the Bernese Mountain dog, since other people who didn't look like me were able to visit him. She then replied back and said that they had an appointment, which was false because those people came in right after we did and did not speak anyone prior about having an appointment. I immediately was appalled because I've had breeds with this sort of structural situation before and I know for a definite fact that what she was saying was not true. In addition, she kept stumbling over her words as if she was trying to come up with an excuse on the spot. Me and my friend turned and looked at each other and we walked out. As me and my friend were continuously walking around the mall, I felt discouraged because I understand my rights as an African American female, and I knew that this wasn't right, and something needed to be done. Me and my friend both came up with the idea of doing a "social experiment", as I stated previously, I am African American, and my friend is Caucasian. So, we decided to go back into the store and instead she would be doing all the talking and I was mainly supposed to be a spectator. We did the exact same thing as I did the first time, however THIS time we were not only able to see a dog, we got to play with a dog for at least a good couple minutes, we also asked the same question about the Bernese Mountain dog and got the same response, but the difference is that we were able THIS time to receive information about the breed itself, how much it would cost to get one, and we got a FULL explanation about how their buying process works and everything that is included with purchasing one of their animals. I know in this day in age everything is changing and becoming different, however some things take longer to change. This situation was completely out of line ESPECIALLY when I myself have been in this establishment before on my own inquiring about buying a dog. I feel as though it is not only our duty to report this behavior, but to also serve as a warning to anyone who may experience any type of discrimination to not be afraid to come forward and to speak your truth and to be able to take a stand for your rights no matter what color you may be. read more

I've been to this store three times. The first time I went in, I was fully expecting to adopt a puppy. I found a Min Pin I really liked but it took like 15 minutes to get any sort of service. Even after I asked for help, I was waiting for a while for somebody to come. Upon playing with the dog for a while, I liked her and inquired about a price. $1,500 or so because she was a "rare" coloring. Mhmm. There were 2 other breeders in the area at the time that had similar puppies for $700. I wasn't paying that. Second visit, once again, I ran into huge problems with being ignored. I had waited 30 minutes to talk to a worker about a dog and was sick of waiting around, so I left. My third time in was my last. This time, I asked where they got their dogs from (very innocently as well), and I got a SUPER rude response. This, actually, is what made me look into it. Because they were SO defensive and rude, I did research online and found out they're a confirmed puppy mill buyer. We got our dog from here 5 years ago. Our dog is wonderful and I wouldn't trade her for the world, but I know that next time we get a dog, it will not be from here... We paid $1500 for our "hybrid" puppy- a mix of Kelpie and Sheltie. We were able to finance her (I was fresh out of college). I was excited to bring her home and ecstatic that we got some complimentary visits to Vet Select. Our puppy had multiple episodes of giardia after we brought her home which the vet attributed to the breeder and Petland conditions. We came here the line was so long just to get in, we waited about a half hour and not only that but the woman who was waiting to let us in kept letting random people on because they needed something. ...So my mom and I stopped by Petland yesterday evening, just to check out and play with some puppies without the intention of actually adopting a puppy that day. Anyways, one thing led to another and we ended up adopting a fluffy, adorkable, beautiful female Australian Shepherd puppy named Mocha. She is the sweetest little cupcake in the world and she is everything we could ask for. However, the asking price for her was extremely high, like most of the puppies in the store. The prices puppies here are pretty high ranging from $1,300-$4000+ per puppy ($4,000 is a bit ludicrous in my opinion), but keep in mind that when you adopt your puppy from Petland it comes with everything you need to care of your dog including the different types of food (wet food and dry puppy kibble), food and water bowls, a crate, toys, treats, a collar and leash, a harness, a blanket, vitamins, a microchip, a training DVD and handbook, and vet visits and various vaccines. So it is actually quite a bundle! The staff were eager to help us and answer all of our questions and were very patient and understanding and helped us go over some paperwork and explained what each item that came with the bundle was used for. Mocha is registered with AKC, which stands for the American Kennel Club, which certifies that she is a pure bred dog. In the next couple of days we are getting information about the actual breeder and her background. We are hoping to train her and enter her into dog shows in the future. In conclusion, I think my only complaints are the price and that my puppy also has kennel cough, which can be easily treated. It's kind of like a cold, from my understanding. I bought my puppy 12/31/11. Harlee was 12 weeks old when I got her. She is a ACA Rottweiler. She also had Giardiasis and had to be treated with antibiotics. She stared having aggressive behavior at 6 months old. Harlee is almost 6 now and has been diagnosed with fear-aggression from genetic abnormality by a Veterinary Behaviorist. We had zero intentions of buying a dog but ended up leaving with a 15 week old golden retriever. He was obviously a lot bigger than the 8 and 9 week old puppies that were in the other cages so we wanted more information on him. The process of getting him was fine, the staff member that helped us was very nice. However, when we brought him home we started to learn of all of his issues from being in the store for so long so with no exercise or proper dog socialization (he was alone in his cage since he was so big). Two of the biggest issues we have had is that the muscles in his back legs had deteriorated from being in the small cage with no exercise for several weeks (vet confirmed). This is completely unacceptable and the store should take proper steps to ensure that if dogs have not been adopted shortly after arrival that they are receiving proper exercise. He could not walk properly due to this and is still rebuilding the muscle he lost. We couldn't tell he had this issue at the store because the area you are able to meet them in is extremely small. The other issue is that he has giardia and it has been extremely hard to get rid of. Our vet also said that PetLand puppies are known to have giardia so buyer beware. I'm glad we were able to save him from the store because who knows how long he would have been in that cage and what more damage would have been done. Had he of not been there we would not have purchased a dog. We will never return after the poor conditions our sweet boy has had to deal with. On a closing note, I would also like to mention that it is a little shady to have your customers fill out review forms before even taking the dog home and to the vet. We have had two dogs from there over past 15 yrs. 1st was yellow lab and we had her for 13 yrs with no health issues and second is German Shepard we've had for 3 yrs with no health issues. Both were/are very happy good dogs. Prices are very high which is why I gave 4 not 5 stars and I think vets pkg are ok that come with the dog. Never continued with that vet preferred my own. Not only that but how they're housed in their cages made me leave the store and I was at the first cage! 4-5 puppies all sharing one little mat because the metal grating under their feet is so uncomfortable!!! PLEASE READ We purchased a Multipoo last year from Petland in Novi. We drove about an hour as we found it was very difficult to find a "reputable" pet store. Upon arrival the store was very busy and it seemed they were somewhat short staffed, but it was no problem. Being a first time puppy owner I liked that we were able to have "play" time with the pups to see how they behaved. The first one we wanted to see was a little boxer and she looked sad so that was our main reason we wanted to see her. After realizing that she was a little large for what I was looking for we started looking around again and noticed that there were a lot of dogs in each crate display. Finally we noticed a timid little pup, which ended up being the one we wanted. The sale people seemed pretty knowledgable, but very forceful in selling. Somehow we ended up putting a deposit. The next day we traveled back to get out new addition. The paperwork took about an hour and a half, for a puppy, yes for a puppy. Many disclosures and one in particular we overlooked was the Giardia & Kennel Cough disclosure. In addition, they charged a ridiculous $200 or $300 microchip transfer fee, the humane society charges about $30. That day we bought all of the "supplies" we needed, food, crate, toys, leash, vitamins, you name it. The sales person literally walks around with you and says hey I recommend this. Which at the time I truly appreciated as I had no idea what I was doing. The puppy alone for a Maltese and poodle mix was about $2200 and we probably spent another $500 in misc items. Shame on me for the extras, but $2200 is insane. Now the $2200 did include about 2 months of free vet visits to the VCA hospital. This seemed great along with this microchip device. Plus if you use their food they said they would "guarantee" my puppy for life, you have to buy a bag each month regardless if needed or not. This was all fine and again sounded great. Within 48 hours or something we had to take our puppy to the vet. She tested positive for intestinal parasites and was put on medication. Within a couple days of this she had a terrible cough and we went to emergency, which is not covered if you didn't go to theirs, as we were really scared. She was given some medicine for kennel cough. The cough progressively got worse and after multiple visits to the VCA each and every week, she had pneumonia. She was on medicine almost everyday from the day we Purchased her for the following 5 or so months. On and off Kennel cough, pneumonia and Giardia. She had to receive 2 breathing treatments that we insisted she receive as she could barely breathe at times. In addition, she had multiple injections as well. The doctor kept prescribing batryl for the cough and come to find out it is very bad for small puppies joint and bone growth. Fortunately today she is so much better, but it was a long tough road. If I could do something to warn more people about this "family owned and operated business" I would. I wish that Petland would admit that their "veterinarian good health sheet" is false and this is a terrible business practice. I don't know if the dogs come from puppy mills or not, but for God sake try to save these helpless animals. The pricing is out of control and this is NOT right. I do not regret buying my beautiful dog, but something needs to be done. Just as other businesses are required to treat customers with honesty and fairness, Petland should she to as well. It is sad that twelve oaks keeps them as a tenant honestly. Only our persistence kept us one step ahead of her being sick. I would give this company half a star if I could. First things first, I financed a puppy here on 4/4. I was looking for a specific breed after my 13 year old dog died and fell in love with my puppy, and made a quick decision. I want to be clear that I do not blame Petland for this. However, I do blame Petland for being extremely predatory and inconsiderate in explaining their loans! The terms of my loan were not explained correctly to me at all, there was a $315 insurance added to the principal of my loan that was never explained to me until I tracked it down on the paper statement the finance company sent JUST now. Gage, the boy who sold me the puppy, never went into any of this about the loan, simply said to me if I paid my separate Petland credit card off in six months I wouldn't have to worry about any interest (they should offer more than this for obviously marking up the price on their puppies). Not to mention, my puppy came home here with two conditions, one being a testicle that hadn't dropped (this was partially explained but the risks of this condition were not explained to me, 80% chance of him getting testicular cancer if not neutered which he will be) and two, a UTI, so really, who knows where they get their puppies from and what kind of care is actually being taken of them. I wouldn't ever buy from here! -UPDATE ON CONGENITAL KIDNEY DISEASE- I decided to take my puppy to Cahill Veterinary Clinic to get him neutered, as I did not trust the care I received at VCA, and Cahill had a much lower rate and higher reputation. At the exam, mandatory blood work was done on my puppy. I received a call at work that my puppies blood had high levels of Creatine, Potassium, and Lymphocytes. The doctor wanted to do more tests to see if something might be wrong with his kidneys before putting him in for surgery. So, we dropped him off at Cahill for some testing. The Dr called to inform me that she conducted an ultrasound on my dogs kidneys and they were not normal and she was not comfortable moving forward with the neuter at that time. She told me that she had been dreading calling me. My puppy had a highly abnormal ultrasound for a nine month old puppy. His kidneys both have cysts on them, he has crystals in his urine, impaired kidney function. The doctor informed me this is congenital and incurable, she has seen dogs live years with this and she has seen them die extremely young. Congenital means that he is NOT from a pure blood line. It means the "breeder" is probably inbreeding puppies! I don't know how long my puppy will live because this is progressive. Had VCA Beech done thorough testing on my puppy when he had a UTI instead of rushing me out the door, I could have found this out and been helping my dog much, much sooner. VCA did not even do a urinalysis on my puppy when I took him in for a UTI. I immediately tried to find the other puppies from the litter that my puppy was born from. There were three at the Petland store. Petland also left an extremely long comment on one of my statuses which I found incredibly insulting, telling me that I am misinformed when I have done hours of research. I ended up getting in touch with the female puppies owner who lives in Garden City. She told me that she played with all three puppies that day to decide which to take home, and each had something wrong with them. Mine had a testicle issue, and her puppy had an umbilical hernia. She couldn't recall what was wrong with the other puppy and I have not had luck getting in touch with that owner. The owner of the female puppy that I spoke to also talked about her awful experience at the VCA Garden City when her previous dog had a UTI, a similar experience to mine, which led her to the VCA Beech, and they have not done a urinalysis or bloodwork on her puppy either and her puppy has been spayed. Her puppy is always thirsty and still peeing in the house so I hope that she does not have the same ailment as mine. She is going forward with getting blood work done. I have done hours of research on the owner that my puppy came from, Elizabeth A Miller, or Tri Star Kennels. I sent them an email and they were non responsive, their website is of low quality with little information. I found Abe N Miller to be linked to Tri Star Kennels, and multiple other operations throughout Ohio such as Quail Creek Kennels, DML Kennels, House of Pets, Abe N Miller LLC, etc. I found that Abe Miller paid the fines for one of his drivers with the last name of Yoder who pleaded guilty to 20 counts of animal abuse transporting puppies from Ohio to New Jersey without water. I have found that Abe Miller is the president of an Ohio dog breeding association that conveniently publicly thanked elected officials who turned down puppy mill regulatory bills. read more
