The customer service rep was just doing his job. BACKGROUND: I prepare taxes. Because of a law change in NYS, Fuel Oil Companies must have at least 10% bio fuel in their deliveries as of 7/1/25 which means Fuel Oil Delivery customers get a partial NYS tax refund based upon the gallons delivered and the percentage of Bio Fuel. EVERY single oil fuel delivery company I've called, except for Petro, promptly informed me that as of 7/1/25 they have 10% biofuel delivered to their clients. Petro apparently is not aware that there is a NYS tax refund for oil deliveries that contain 6% or more bio fuel. I called Petro 2 times and I emailed them. They never answered my email. All the CSRs told me was "it's up to 20%" which does not answer the question. How much is being delivered NOW? PETRO, YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS WILL BE A BIGGER DEAL IN 2026 FOR NYS TAX REFUNDS IN 2026. read more

These yahoos dont even deserve their 2.3 overall rating. I paid $400+ for their "Maintenance Plan" and the one time I used it the service tech tried to get me to agree to a $2200 maintenance item that, of course, was not included in my plan. When I declined, he said they would "throw in" another service that was worth $500 and would be included in the $2200. When I pointed out to him that either: (1) the service was not worth $500 or (2) the $2200 service was overpriced at least $500 he got a little testy in his Eastern European accent. They just filled my oil tank at $5.47 per gallon. Just do a search on google for the average price of #2 heating oil and in my town it is averaging between $3.75 and $4.25. I recently went through a service call that required a new replacement. I was given the recommendation after our previous burner was served to be too troublesome and eventually not operable and not worth the retro that was also an option. teach Steve and Henry both gave me their recommendations. when I decided to replace with a new unit , sales advisor Frank came and recommended the unit and financing assist. The next day Frank helped with the steps that needed to be done and was very helpful and I was all set for the install. said they would be here the next day at 7:30am . the two Techs Steve and Andrew showed up at 7:30 and explained what they would do and conti to do the work. They completed the work . they were very professional and was very happy with their work. I would recommend Petro to others. Petro used to be a great local company. Now they have grown into a huge business that no longer provides good customer service. I stopped my auto delivery 2 years ago (2024) because my boiler broke and I switched to split units. Then this past January (2026) out of nowhere, the started auto delivery again. When I called they denied I turned off auto delivery but couldn't explain why they hadn't delivered at all in 2025. They want me to pay $200 for their mistake. I am still fighting this. But they keep referring to a call in MARCH 2024 before I stopped delivery. In the March call my husband mentioned we would be using less oil...then after the boiler yearly maintained in July, when we found out our pressure tank was leaking so we decided to stop using the boiler all together...we turned off auto deliver for the upcoming winter. They did not deliver in 2025 and yet a FULL YEAR later we get a delivery. They are rude and not helpful! (Their service people are excellent...but customer service...especially the supervisors are NOT helpful) read more

I have been with them for a while on auto delivery. I often have to call for delivery. I checked on line and was showing almost full after a month of artic temperatures. I called to tell them something is wrong. I need a delivery. Well the middle of the night 11 degrees, no heat. Called was told they would deliver sometime that day. I told 2 separate representatives that I would go to work and they had to call me when they were on their way so I could meet the tech to restart everything. They delivered to someone who had heat before me. Finally came around 3 in the afternoon. The tech did not call me so could not get in. Because no one called me as instructed. I called again. Was told it would be between 8 and 10 pm before a tech would come. I had to cancel a lunch, a car service appointment and a birthday dinner that day. I have never dealt with a tech as unfriendly and rude.l when he did come. Acted as though he was being put out! And the worst part I received an email within about 30 minutes with an invoice for a service charge! And they still need to replace the faulty monitor. Very disappointed. I called today because I wanted to know when my next scheduled delivery was. I have a service contract and automatic delivery set up with them. They said next week. I asked the price and she said OVER $4.00/gallon! I do have a ceiling rate which is great but the average COD is a dollar or more cheaper! What's the point of having a ceiling rate if you are always charging close to it! It's unethical. After 2 other serious issues with them over the past year I can't wait to get out of my contract in January. We will definitely be going elsewhere. read more

Stay away. We have a business with several properties. Shame on us for not checking sooner but the bottom line is that they have been gouging us on pricing over 50% higher than the average in the area. They charged us an average of $4.69-$4.89 per gallon when the average was $3.51 for our location as per NYS ERDA. I have also called for several other quotes and the prices were all around the $3.51 average. Looking back at history they were always charging much higher than the fluctuating average. Additionally, their customer service is terrible. It can take an hour on the phone speaking with reps that have no knowledge of how the billing or pricing works and struggle with even taking a message to escalate it. You can never get a manager on the phone either. I have called Petro multiple times and also sent several emails and nobody every gets back to me. I explained all this to a rep I spoke with about 2 weeks ago who promised the "loyalty dept" would call me in a day or two and that the money we paid in advance for 2022 service contracts would be refunded. This never happened either. That's another issue... they "force" you to buy service contracts and the price increases on those by 50% a year and they sneak it into the billing so you have to call and negotiate it down every year. Petro has been servicing my home for over 7 years now with home heating oil and propane. I have never run out of either and the service they give is always quick and reliable. When I recently had no heat they were there when they said they would and repaired the heater and kept me informed of the work needed. Strongly recommend there services to anyone. read more

My AC Unit is under contract by Petro. I had a problem this morning where my home temperature was 73°F this morning, while I had the thermostat set to 69°F. I scheduled a service call online immediately. They had an availability for today, 19 June between 12p and 3p. Petro Service called me ahead of time and notified me that they would send out a tech before 12p. Taylor M. Arrived before 12p. On the scene he performed a multi point diagnostic. The refrigerant levels were full, but found there was no coolant flow. He investigated the flow and circuitry and found the root cause to be a running capacitor. He replaced the part, it eliminated the fan grinding noise, and my AC unit is back up and running. Taylor M. Is a superb and professional technician. He is a credit to Petro. I have had an exceedingly difficult experience with Petro. They installed a heat pump in our home, but made clear before the installation that we would need to still use our existing fuel oil-powered radiator as a back-up in case of severe winter conditions, and we therefore would need to keep our existing Nest thermostat running in addition to the new heat pump thermostat. However, when they installed the new heat pump, they completely disconnected our Nest thermostat and have not been responding to multiple emails to arrange for the Nest thermostat to get reconnected. Furthermore, when the heat pump was installed, they did not cover or move our furniture and we found debris (including mouse droppings) over our belongings. read more

UPDATE - after leaving this review, they contacted me repeatedly to issue a refund (of $917). They said it would take 10 business days to arrive. Just called back now 5 weeks later and it will be another month. It's mid July and I canceled my contact in January. ORIGINAL POST Would caution against using Petro. We signed up with them in 2019 because it's what the previous home owners used. We signed up for their premium service agreement at a yearly rate. 24 months into our contract, we learned that the premium service agreement escalates in price -- which "we cannot tell you in advance" -- each year. A customer service rep admitted that that this should have been made clear when we signed up. Looking back at the contract we signed there was no mention of an escalating price at all. We considered this price gouging and canceled our service with them immediately. 5 months later, we are still waiting on our refund for our charged in advance premium service price for 2022 (which we have not received any service on). It's over $400. In addition, they removed our propane tank with no warning. They did not knock on the door (we were home). This required us to pay an extra $75 for an emergency delivery of a new tank of propane with our new provided. Finally, we are still waiting on the refund from our propane tank since we paid for the propane in it (around 75 gallons) and we own that. Customer service is a mess. I feel for the reps working there. Many are friendly but very disempowered. Feels like others are selling snake oil. We're currently waiting on hundreds of dollars from them and I'm losing confidence that we'll get it back. And then I get a email to fill out a survey... and I haven't been a customer in 5 months ;) So here we are! read more

The drain on the bottom of my indirect broke off in the middle of the night called Petro they said someone would be here between 8-12 since we had to dry the 6" of water in basement. Nick (Awesome Beard) service tech was here at 945 and thank god he had extra fittings in his truck or I wouldn't of had hot water for a couple weeks because he said that part would be hard to find. long story short Nick was here for about an hour and my problem is fixed and he even replaced it with the right fitting. have nothing but good things to say about Nick professional courteous and respectful and understood the stress my fiancé was under. thank you so much and give this man a raise. great tech. read more

Steven is an outstanding technician He communicates very well He understands the needs of a customer. When he was given my service call he reached out to me from his cell phone and left me a message to tell me what time he'll be arriving and if I have any questions to reach out to him on his cell directly. This stands out to me in a very very big way. Because many technicians when they call you they do not give you their cell phone or leave you with confidence that you can reach back out to them. So I am very happy to get Steven as my tech. He fix my problem in no time and assure me everything is fine but if I should have any additional questions feel free to reach out to him on his cell. THE WORST!! Our service contract expired they never called us or serviced anything so we completely ran out of oil (I spoke to a friend about it as well and this happened to her too)... When we got oil, a week later the house had a diesel like smell that gave me a headache and the heat wasn't working and I had to shut off the heat, open the windows to air it out (this was Saturday). Called Petro around 9am they said they would come between 3:45-6. Went out did errands they call us at 1 saying no one's home for the repair. Since our basement is outside access only we told them they can go down and work or we can be back home in 30 minutes. They told us they would start. We go back anyways and no one was there. No note on what was done or anything. Well this is because nothing was done ! We called and they said they needed to order the part and had no idea when it was coming. Missed a call from them, called back the next day lady was rude on the phone said the manager was on lunch and he would have to call me back in 30 minutes. 3 hours goes by no call. I call them and they said oh they just are going to order the part. I was confused because why did they do all of that to tell me what I already knew? Two days goes by the manager calls me while I'm at work saying they only have half the information leaves his personal cell number and direct office number. I call both no answer. He calls me back saying he needs me to read the model number before they can order it because the guy didn't take it down. He ends up sending a guy out to get the number. Call again two days later because it snowed and my house is 59 degrees my boyfriend had to plow and came into a cold house and was sleeping in front of a space heater. When I called they told me they won't get the part until Monday. I asked if they could expedite it because this has been a week of no heat. They said no there isn't anything they can do and that's what it is. I asked if I can speak with the manager (who the lady told me was on call by the way) and she was not able to get in touch with. She said she would have him call me back. This is two hours ago. I understand it's not the person who I'm speaking to on the phones fault so I'm trying to be nice but it seems like it's not getting me heat so I hope this gets someone's attention and warns the next person when they're looking for an oil company. read more

Bullet dodged, to say the least. We had our AC unit break last second on us the other night, which we considered an emergency since we have pets and the house was reading 87+. We called many other companies in the area but the representative on their emergency line assured me a thousand times they will fix it the same night. After being on hold for close to 30 minuets, she comes back to tell me the soonest they can do it between 8am- 11am the following day. Fine, the sooner the better and that was the fastest time we were quoted thus far. The following day rolls around and nothing happens. We left the door open so we could see out the screen since our doorbell can be tricky. We left our phones on max volume in case they called. We waited home for hours before finally calling to see what's up. Another representative stated "our repair man received no answer from the door, and left multiple voicemails". The rep confirmed my number and address, both were correct but nobody ever called or showed up. Again, placed on hold for another 25 minuets, just for them to say "oh actually we don't service your area, it's too far so we'd have to reschedule with someone who can travel to your destination".... We are 11 minuets from this place. I told them forget it, as my trust for them was gone. They wanted to still bill me since the service order said someone did come to the house and it was "145$ just for them to come out". Not only we were lied to a handful of times, and almost scammed, we also were prevented and delayed in getting real help from a company who is honest and organized. Very unprofessional, very mismanaged, continued lies to hide the fact they don't know what their doing. I'd never recommend this company and we hardly got to work with them. read more

My family and I have been customers of Petro's for over 20 years. They replaced my boiler a couple of years ago. I was assured that the boiler would work 100% with the exisiting set-up. That has proven to not be the case. When the boiler is operating I get a noise in my kitchen (which is directly above the boiler room) like a train passing through. I have had multiple technician visits and they can't fix it. One technician suggested that the liner inside the chimney was the reason for the noise. We spent a small fortune replacing the liner. The noise is still there. Now the new speculation is the size of the chimney, which is crazy since the company had confirmed that this was the right boiler with our existing set-up. That was a huge swlling point for us. I Can't get a manager to talk to me and phone dispatch can't tell me when I will hear from said manager. When one the technicians told me he could not figure it out, I asked him to tell me who. He suggested I contact a heating and air conditionning company? What???? This is on top of such technician being 2 hours late of a 4 hour window. read more

This Company Harassed, Threatened,Stalked my family. I asked Petro Company why they thought it was ok for there Employees told me it was because I was involved in a car accident that I was involved in 5 years ago. Keep in mind neither of the two employees were involved in the accident. These went one for well over a week these people showed up to my house well knowing they were going to install the new burner we just purchased from them. I requested a different driver come install it and shocker the customer service could care less and sent the two people who had been threatened me and my family too install it .... Short summary: I was a customer for about 8 years, asked to stop auto-delivery (found a cheaper provider), so they cut off my hot water and took my propane tank without notice. Shady business practices of no-delivery receipt charges, and tank fees. Generally evil. Long story: Summer of 2018 I had Petro run a propane line to a new hot water heater and upgrade the tank. It went well. I had 3 auto-deliveries at various prices since then, one delivery was twice as expensive as the others but I did not get a delivery receipt, and Petro did not have one on file. I did some looking, and found Kimlin Energy at a lower rate. Petro was $5.69/gal for propane, I thought that was pricey. In January I stopped auto-delivery. Petro began calling twice a day, several times a week, to resume delivery. I asked them to stop calling. In March I asked for a one-time delivery, Kimlin was out of stock of the 120gal tanks. In April I smelled propane and asked Petro to repair their propane line, they did. In late April I missed a propane bill. In May, Petro sent a letter saying I was late and they'd lock then take the tank. I called (on Friday 5/17) and paid the bill and late charge. I also explained that I was not yet ready to change providers. I've been out of town a lot caring for an ill relative, but did not disclose that information. On Tuesday 5/21 they came to lock the tank, I explained I was paid up and not cancelling service, he confirmed and apologized. I said again I did not want auto-delivery, I am changing providers, but may get a one-time delivery again. On Thursday before Memorial Day they came and took my tank, cutting off my cooking and hot water. No notice. They came when we were at work. I called, they're sorry, but can't help. I apologize to the poor girl Thursday, she got the blunt end of my frustration over no hot water. Sorry! Friday they called for the $150 tank reclaim fee. I said I DID NOT WANT YOU TO TAKE MY TANK. The argument I got was that Petro owns the tank and they reserve the right to protect their asset since I did not have auto-delivery, and was not in contact with them. But they did have access in April and in May, and I called a few days prior to this. I think they had a mix-up in their records, but they refused apology and are only refunding me a small amount for the amount of propane they claim I had. I didn't check the tank first so I can't argue much. Depew is installing a new tank now. Depew is $2.99/gal + $3.99 delivery charge, no supply tier. They're local and won't call twice a day. They also always have a receipt for delivery, they've delivered my oil for a long time. Don't buy from Petro. Buy from Depew, Kimlin, Porco, Star Gas, Bottini, Mazzola, or literally any other company in the Hudson Valley. read more

After explaining in writing that both myself and my spouse are in the high-risk demographic for not surviving Covid, Petro (again) sent two representatives to our home today without gloves and masks. 12-31-20 Email to Petro: "When your representatives come to our property, we require Petro to follow CDC Guidelines. Your representatives must wear masks and gloves. Your representatives will NOT leave a paper receipt or come to the door. If they do not wear masks and gloves, if they leave a paper receipt, or if they come to the door, it will be grounds for immediate termination and Petro will be reported to the New York Covid19 Hotline." We have reported the incident to the New York Covid19 Hotline, Google, and Yelp. We are sending a detailed letter to Petro's home office on Monday. We were satisfied with Petro until they joined Tank Farm. The business and customer service has gone down hill ever since. Apparently, Petro/Tank Farm cares more about money than they do the health and well-being of their customers. Selfish and unacceptable. read more

After being with my previous oil and propane company for 13 years, I made the switch to Petro home services. Last year I got a New central Air system which is great. I recently switched to Petro Propane n so glad I did. I recently purchase furnace protection plan which was the best thing I could have done because I had an issue today and they sent the tech out today 10/6/19. I am so so pleased with the pricing and service that I received from this company! Petro is a no nonsense and fairly priced for their devices. CAUTION PETRO is unprofessional and untrustworthy. If it was possible I would provide 0 stars. We have been a customer of Petro for 15 yrs, buying thousands of dollars of equipment (new boiler in '14) & oil from them with satisfaction. This all changes in June'21 when we signed a contract to have a new AC unit installed. After 2.5 months the unit arrived in Sept'21 therefore we did not allow for an install until spring'22 for good reason of a unit not being used or tested for 6+monts in NY. Petro sent a tech to our home at 7 am without an appointment in Oct'21, we denied install again until spring'22. Then in Jan'22 we received an invoice with interest for the unit that has not been installed. After several phone calls this was fixed. Finally on April 4, 2022 we have the unit fully installed and paid in full. The first hot stretch of weather (7/21) our unit begins to drip from the front of our entry (outside) starts blowing hot air and stops cooling. Petro comes and "corrects" the issue and we have AC until the following night when we are awaken at 1am to dripping water in our entryway from the attic where our unit is installed. Petro comes and admits they improperly installed the unit (improperly pitched) and therefore the safety failed and the secondary pan overflowed into our walls, entryway floor, and attic. Why this was seen as a potential issue on 7/21 is remarkable. On 7/23 a secondary line is ran to allow us to have AC but the unit needs to be properly reinstalled. It has been 2 wks. and we have mold growing by the minute in our attic which we are breathing. Petro's attempt to correct this was to have an internal resource who does some construction correct a potentially toxic issue which we refused as we need this professionally repaired and corrected. We have not heard from Petro to repair our walls and ceiling, remediate any mold we are breathing, or properly install the unit they installed improperly that created this nightmare. We trusted Petro and their service professionals to do a proper install which has been nothing but a nightmare. I would advise you find another company who can adhere to their agreements. read more

Dishonest ripoff artists. Overcharged for propane and oil. When you call them on it they fast talk you. You'd have to be an idiot not to dump them after they jack up the price by 50% over market average. This is an update in response to the robo response I got from my review. Customer service will try to convince you that they did not rip you off. They will tell you not to believe what you've read about what other companies are charging. For example: my first complaint to them was regarding a propane bill I got in April where that charged me $4.49/gal. The average price everywhere else was $2.90. The fact that I'd have to change out my tank to get rid of them worked in their favor. I told them to continue propane but not oil. This month I got an unsolicited oil delivery for another heavily inflated rate. They argued that as per our April dispute they were to continue with the oil delivery. And that was the end of it for me. One other thing: at one time we had a service contract for our furnace with them. They blew off 2 appointments where my wife missed work waiting for them. Purchased high end gas furnace spent over $15,000 and have had constant issues. One issue took over six weeks to fix with five different service folks involved, although they did send oil service technicians several times who knew nothing about gas furnaces, amazing! Now the same problem is happening, calls are not returned, no updates, parts get lost in shipping, excuse after incompetent excuse, if you enjoy being extremely frustrated and have no need for reliable heat they are highly recommended to provide the worst customer experience possible! read more

I have been a customer for my home heating oil since 2014 when we purchased our home. Recently Petro's rates are more than double those of other local oil companies. I've spoken with customer service twice regarding this issue and neither time has anything been able to be done- nor were any suggestions made other than canceling and having to pay a $399.00 contract cancellation fee! I just got a bill for $757.68 for 214.7 gallons of oil at my ceiling rate of $3.529. This ceiling plan is supposed to offer oil at the lowest market rate but PETRO'S market rate. Not the actual market rate. The average rate for 3 other local companies is $2.69. Beware before you deal with this company and NEVER AGREE TO A CONTRACT with them. read more
