The atmosphere was wonderfully welcoming and conducive to creativity. With samples and painting techniques displayed throughout. Petroglyph is such a fun, hands-on experience whether you're a kid or just a kid at heart. I've been coming here since childhood, and it's still just as enjoyable today. It's easy to choose your own ceramic piece and design it however you like--with plenty of paint options, brushes, and inspiration all around. My fiancé and I each painted mugs during a recent visit, and we're so excited to see the finished results. The space is welcoming, with lots of seating and a wide variety of ceramics to choose from. I came here one evening to paint some pottery. You get to pick your piece and paint it. There is a charge for the cost of the piece and a adult/child rate for painting as well. It was pretty fun to do and the staff were very friendly and explained how everything worked. Came here with a group of girlfriends on a Saturday. It was totally empty aside from a couple kids and a family, and perfect for our group of 8. Two of us had been to petroglyph before so we sat down and got right to it. But I do wish we had received some instruction for example about the stands because some of our hands were cramping from holding it. We decided to stop here after dinner to paint pottery and had a great time. There is a large selection of plates, bowls, cups, trinkets, and figurines to paint. Jennifer (I hope that's right!) gave us a very informative run down based on the items we chose to paint, which recommendations on brushes, paint coats, and application technique so that we could have a great time with a nice finished product. We stayed until close. We didn't feel rushed, and even got some extra help and a demo as we finished up our pieces. I am a big fan of art and this place is fun! I went mid day during the week and I must have showed up right at the right time. This place gets busy and noisy. For a paint shop you would think the ground would be solid and not shake when people walk by, but it took my paintbrush in the wrong direction a few times. Good thing all the paint is water based and is easily removed! There is a $14 "service charge" no matter what plus the cost of the price you decide to paint. I guess you could say it's over priced, but you'll keep this set piece for as long as you can manage to not drop it! It takes 4 days to be fired and ready for pickup. Came here for a date night. The place is awesome: a lot of mugs, bowls, decorative objects and other types of ceramics to choose from. Grab whatever art supplies appeal and go make your unique custom piece! It has an old time-y vibe to it, with an appropriate soundtrack. The paint also washes off easily from your hands and clothes. **Price, 3.5/5** Prices are a little steep -- $14 studio fee which covers the art supplies and firing, and most plates and bowls run about $20-30, so you can easily spend over $50 on a plate. Totally worth it if it's a date or special occasion though. **Art materials, 4/5** Great selection of bowls, plates, figurines, and ornaments to paint. I do wish there was a bigger selection of mugs. There were also tons of paint colors available, but a lot of the bumpy paints were dried out and there weren't many solid fine tipped brushes. **Other notes** Parking can be really difficult on this street, and it'll take about 5 days afterwards until your items are ready to pick up. read more

I personally love to paint a basic ceramic tile each time I go -- really comfortable space and the staff are always helpful and friendly -- there's no pressure to finish the entire piece in one sitting, you can always come back later -- if you need multiple sessions, you only have to pay the studio fee once -- studio fee is half off on Tuesdays if you go with a friend or group! What doesn't work: -- each piece is on the expensive side but I think it makes sense considering that they also fire the piece for you -- depending on when you go in, there can be a lot of kids around. [Jan 19 2025] We appreciate the upper management's prompt reply, recognizing the misstep by their staff and handling the issue effectively in response. I am therefore restoring the rating to 5/5 stars, because, as mentioned, we love Petroglyph overall. [Jan 16 2025] We love Petroglyph, so it pains me to write this, but hopefully it will help management show some more customer appreciation in the future. We had my granddaughter's party there. We had booked the studio for 3 hours and up to 10 painters (priced at $450). There were 6 kids and their parents, and we encouraged parents and kids to have fun and paint something. So, we ended up with 15 ceramics and a bill of $706.91, including a very generous tip which we paid the day of the event. 4 days later, I went to pick up the ceramics so that my granddaughter distributes them to her 5 friends at school the next day. At pick up, the ceramics were packed in 3 bags. Each kid had 2-4 ceramics. So that the ceramics don't run the risk of breaking if handed out at school individually, I asked for an extra 2 bags to give to each of the 5 guest kids theirs and their parent's ceramic in one bag each. The manager of the store told me she needed to charge me 50 cents for the 2 extra bags. When I jokingly expressed my surprise for being charged 50 cents for 2 bags after a $706.91 bill, she insisted on charging me the 50 cents stating that they are a small business and that they had already packed the ceramics in 3 bags instead of 1 without charging me. Of course, 15 ceramics don't fit in 1 bag. We support this small business by having my granddaughter's party there, inviting all parents to paint alongside their kids and making a $700+ bill instead of the minimum 3-hour event bill at $450 plus tax. After this, the lack of flexibility and diplomacy on the manager's behalf for 50 cents seems unappreciative of a loyal customer and makes us very skeptical of returning. Individually, we may return but for another large event, it's highly unlikely after this unfortunate interaction with the manager. I am hoping that this place will be run with more insight & customer-centric mentality in the future vs. looking at the 50 cents tree and missing the forest of a loyal customer. It is a small business after all and a customer-centric stance from management is essential to its survival. read more

Took my bf here for his bday and it was such a fun date experience. It was $15 for the studio fee which basically includes the glaze, firing and clean up. Then you pick a ceramic piece of choice which all have their own costs. I got a pretty standard large much which was $26. Then they show you the paints and tell you to paint multiple layers for optimum color. And they include brushes, stamps, stencils and everything you can need. There was also aprons so we didn't get our clothes dirty. They will tell you when it will be finished for pick up on another day. We ended up staying for 6 hours since we were debating hard on what to paint and took our sweet time. But there are figurines to paint to make that decision less stressful. Highly recommend to date night or family night. Weekdays are pretty empty so highly recommend coming on a weekday Free 2 hour parking in the front. read more

We went to another color me mine before but they were all booked for the day so we were calling other similar spots to see if we could just walk in. This petroglyph responded promptly and told us they had space open and we can come in anytime, so we headed here right after. We painted two plates and some small figurines. I'm a childless adult currently, but I enjoy paint-your-own-craft places like these. This one is in a nice area of town, a little upscale pocket of Willow Glen with tons of storefronts and restaurants. It's a nice ambiance. I was hoping it would be a little more "adult-oriented" considering the location, but it seemed to still primarily attract younger children for the seven hours I was there working carefully on my piece. That said, they have a decent selection of items to chose from, from useful items like plates, bowls, mugs, toothbrush holders, and nightlights, to purely decorative items. Most of the items are in the $20 range, with some under and a few quite a bit over. I chose one of the more elaborate pieces they had, which set me back $47. The studio fee is $10, no matter how long you stay, and they will allow you to take your piece home and bring it back another day if you need additional time to work on it. The turn-around time for firing was decent; I came in on Monday and they had it ready for me Thursday evening. The staff were all friendly but mostly hung around in the background answering the phone when need be. The selection of colors to paint with was good, they had plenty of bottles of each to go around (so you were never stuck waiting for someone else to finish with a color). They also had the bubble paint for fine details, along with stencils, lace, and tape so you could get more creative if desired. I brought my own set of brushes because I don't like to gamble with quality, but glancing at what they had, most of their brushes weren't too damaged by younger patrons. All in all, a good experience. They gave me a "frequent guest" card which gets you free studio fee every fourth visit, no expiration. read more

Took my grandma and my mom here last week to celebrate my grandma's birthday! Cute location and concept. The host greeted us and explained the process, but other than that was pretty hands off, which I liked! Only complaint was ... A lot of people bring their children and sometimes don't have full control of them. Can get loud! A little 5-7 year old boy hit a shelf with the pottery and about 10 pieces came crashing down !!! Could've been way worse and someone could've gotten hurt. The staff cleaned it all up and was still super friendly towards the family so shows what great staff is there! Overall, it was a good experience! A little pricey but we all liked the items we painted and was a fun outing. Awesome place. Came in and saw that there was no one inside so we were accommodated quickly. The worker was very friendly and told us how the process works. We decided to paint a narwhal! They have a lot of colors and brushes to use. They also have palettes and sponges at every table. I recommend maybe sharing one to paint between two people since it does get a bit pricey, especially since the check-in on Yelp gives you $1 off only. Overall, a great experience! I was getting dinner in the area, and the lady decided she wasn't hungry quite yet. Instead, we head over here and she states that she really enjoys doing this, and wanted to try this place out. Well, I'm for anything, so we walk in. This was my first time, and I was a bit confused. There was a small group of kids there for a birthday party, and a few other guests. Nobody really came to help us. We found things we wanted to paint, put them on a table, and then started grabbing brushes and paint. After we sat down, that's when somebody came and gave us an introduction. Better late than never? For those who are new, this is my basic understanding on how things work: Step 1 - Find something you want to paint ($$ varies based on item) Step 2 - Find a seat and put your stuff down Step 3 - Grab paint and brushes Step 4 - Some places recommended wiping down your ceramic things prior to painting, this place recommends not doing that. Do it if you want to clean your ceramic item, but make sure its dry before painting! Step 5: Squeeze some paint on to the paint and being painting Step 6: Finish painting, bring your completed art to the counter and pay. The plate is for putting paint on. The sponge is for dabbing excess paint on. Fees: There are 2 prices... one for the ceramic item you picked to paint, and the other is a sit in fee. While I enjoyed myself this time, I did wish I received instructions or a greeting upon walking in. Also, I wished the person would have walked around and checked up on us. I think that customer service could have been a lot better. Other than that, you're just going there to paint. The table next to us cracked open a bottle of wine. Awesome. I typically write reviews when it's good and a lot about Petroglyph is super fun and good! However, I will mention, my husband coming solo to pick up 7+ pieces of work our group did, spending over $200 (sitting fees and the cost of the pieces), him requesting to pick them up from the back on a rainy day I felt wasn't too much to ask, but oh well. Just a heads up...Parking is difficult on N Santa Cruz, and if you park behind they will not make any exceptions for in-the-back pick ups, so plan accordingly. Otherwise we had fun and I am excited to see how everything turned out. I will update my review with photos later. The petroglyph team was attentive and awesome our entire visit there and my husband let me know at pick up once he parked and came through the front, they were great. My friends and I came here a month ago and we had a lot of fun laughing, Plus it was very relaxing painting. The one complaint I had last time was the girl working the counter lacked customer service skills, once she left for the evening there was a guy working alone. I needed help but there wasn't anyone at the counter for about fifteen minutes I actually timed it. Duh- I could have opened the register and ran! The problem I have this time and last time, is that in addition to my relaxing I had pesky little flies landing on my face, arms and table, which was and is super annoying and disgusting! I don't think that I would come back. Great idea for relaxing and hanging out with good company, but not with this customer service and atmosphere. Plus pretty pricey. Very disappointing!!! This was a great place for us to have a date afternoon. We went in there, picked out the items and got to work painting to our heart's content. The service here is pretty hands off, they go around to show you the various pieces to pick from and then they leave you alone so you can chit chat/relax or just work on your item. Reservations are highly recommended especially on the weekends. We came back a few times and one time brought my cousin and her boyfriend. The paint is a lot more pastel-y and fainter but fires up brightly and beautifully. The pricing can be kinda high since you pay for a studio fee and also a fee for the pottery but it's a good investment if you have a full day to relax and paint. What a great gem of a place to come and release some creative energy! I have only been on weekdays after 5pm and I LOVE it. On both occasions it was very calm inside, with classical music that you can zone out to, which I throughly appreciated. With artistry environments you have 2 types of employees: The know it all pompous attitude that looks down on you for asking questions. OR People like MYRA who are SO welcoming, warm and beyond helpful in a non intrusive way. Myra was EXTREMELY helpful in explaining how Petroglyph worked. I asked questions about paints and if I would be able to mix them like acrylics and she explained wonderfully the difference in ceramic paints to other paints. She was humble, knowledgable and welcomed questions! I also loved the variety of pieces that they have for you to chose from. I'm not really into the "cutesie" side of ceramics, and fell in love with all the other vast options they had.
