We had such a good experience adopting our dog through ABC Rescue! It's always nerve wracking to make such a big decision sight unseen, but Tina was extremely communicative throughout the entire process and very honest about the dog, her history, her temperament, and everything else we could possibly want to know. We received complete vet records (above and beyond what was required), translated into English, and tons of pictures and videos of the dog in various situations (with kids, with other dogs, in crowded places, etc). On top of that, Tina visited our house ahead of time to ensure we would be a good match, and we had the opportunity to ask her any/all questions that we had. Then we had the 2-week trial period on top of that, during which Tina continued to be very responsive and professional. Before coming to us, our dog was fostered for 9 months in Taiwan with an ABC Rescue partner. We were so impressed that she came to the US knowing basic commands in English -- and showing a great eagerness to learn more. We fell in love with our dog sight unseen, from only his post that was first noted on Petfinder. My husband and I went through the application process, which was thorough. Including who lives in home, past pet experience, how much time those who live in home would be able to spend with pet, etc. Photos were sent of family in home with past pets. It was only a few days later that we heard back! We first went to visit our dog Ollie at his foster home. He was so well behaved, and you could tell he was comfortable with his current living situation. I'm not sure how he didn't become a foster fail as he is such a good boy! Secondly, Tina & Yvonne (foster mom) came to our house to ensure the safety and well being of Ollie's potential new home. Tina brought ALL of his medical records from Taiwan, vaccinations, CD of imaging, even with translation into English for our vet. We had a two week trial to make sure that Ollie settled in well & there was no "buyers remorse." We were grateful that they were comfortable and appreciative of the loving home we have made for Ollie. ABCR only cares about the wellbeing of their dogs they find placement for. UPDATE 11.15.24 - - ABCR finally responded to me, ... well, to my negative review. I bcc and/or screenshot my online communications so ABCR's assertion that my application was "incomplete" and missing home photos is not accurate. And even if an appplication is incomplete (which mine was not), why would ABCR IGNORE each of my subsequent emails reiterating my interest and NOT ADVISE their (inaccurate) impression that my application was incomplete? It would have been nice for Tina of ABCR to have just acknowledged their poor communication ... which has apparently beeen experienced by many 10s of other potential pet parents (as demontrated in their yelp reviews). ORIGINAL REVIEW - - On 5.24.24, I contacted A Better Chance Rescue("ABCR") after becoming enamored with a dog Mika in Taiwan to see if she was stil available for adoption (the level of detail posted of Mika's profile, in particular her personality, was truly impressive). ABCR replied the very next day confirming her availability but sharing that she was not yet scheduled for a flight to San Francisco. I submitted ABCR's adoption application complete with my home photos ... and followed up again on 5.26.24 but heard nothing further. On 5.28.24, I followed up but again heard nothing. Over the next 5 MONTHS, I followed up a few more times but heard NOTHING. It is puzzling to fill out a rather extensive adoption application and then never hear back as to whether you are (or are not) under consideration for the dog. Although I am very happy to know that ABCR facilitates some successful adoptions, and that they are FASTIDIOUS in finding VERY GOOD homes for their adoptees, from my uninformed perspective, it seems that their many adoptees would benefit from ABCR having better communication with potential pet parents. After all, the whole point is that these wonderful canine creatures EVENTUALLY find FOREVER HOMES. it was unfortunate to be ignored by ABCR for nearly 6 months. Things worked out in the end though as I am ecstatic to report that I have adopted Aspen, a 56lb 2yo shepherd mix rescue. She was 3 days from being euthanized (for simply being extremely cautious with strangers) . . . but with the help of the Friends of Berkeley Animal Care Services, Stitch In Time Animal Rescue, and her amazing foster, Aspen (photos below) became a permanent and totally loved member of my family on Friday. Although Aspen briefly touched me only 3 times over the 2 weeks that I visited her (at the shelter & on some of her foster's pack walks), in just 3 days, Aspen is eating and eliminating regularly and has even started to bond with me. Although she still flinches at many noises outside, she now feels so comfortable at home that she will open her eyes but not lift her head to strange noises. Last night, Aspen reached out for an Eskimo kiss and bowed her head so that I could massage her neck. A Better Chance Rescue was very responsive to our application. We discussed options to meet Cami within just a few days, engaged in our initial meet and greet with our kids and current family dog, scheduled a home visit/inspection, and final drop off. From start to finish we had Cami with us within 1 week. However, there is a 2 week trial period to ensure the fit is working well with our family before the adoption is finalized. This was our first time rescuing a dog and we were very impressed with the process. Paperwork was provided including an extensive 3 page document from the Veterinary Clinic in Taiwan. Not only did Cami come to us spayed, microchipped, and vaccinated with a 10-in-1 vaccination (much more than what we do here in the States), rabies vaccine, an extensive blood work panel done, her teeth were cleaned, and they provided us with a CD including a full body X-Ray that was also performed. She had been in rescue for 5 months prior to arriving in the U.S. The foster family in Taiwan did a wonderful job not only house and crate training Cami, but also training to not be on furniture, beds, or even some bedrooms. It provided an incredible segway for us to have as a baseline to move forward with raising Cami and integrating our own house rules as we please. The personality and character descriptions of Cami on their web site were spot-on. Nothing was a surprise. Luckily, Cami had just arrived to the U.S., so our wait time was very minimal, but I do understand that sometimes the dogs might still be in Taiwan. As a dog coming from Taiwan, Cami's journey is one of quiet strength, resilience, and second chances. She's a mother, a survivor, and now, a beloved part of our family. We highly recommend A Better Chance Rescue (ABC) if you're looking for a dog as they really take care of their dogs. You can be assured that the dogs have been in loving foster homes with ABC. We found a dog named Unia on Petfinder.com and emailed ABC and got a reply from Tina the same day. There was a long application form, but that shows you how much Tina cares about her dogs and finding the right families. We got to see Unia at a meet and greet with other dogs that were up for adoption. Turns out that we fell in love with another dog named Persis. Tina's dogs are all rescues from Taiwan. ABC foster parents take care of them and train them really well until they are adopted. Tina and the foster parents--Yvonne, Ailee and Jeff--are true dog lovers and very helpful answering all our questions. When we decided to adopt Persis we got a two week trial period. Tina and Ailee came to check our house and recommended some minor changes for the safety of Persis. We are now her forever family. She's been with us for four months now and we've renamed her Hanna. Hanna is an amazing and pretty dog! We keep in touch with Tina and the foster parents, have play dates and even board Hanna with Yvonne when we are away. read more

We adopted a dog from ABC Rescue and it was a professional and very successful process. We found the candidate dog "Henry" on petfinder.com. There were many youtube videos of Henry, which were very helpful for us to understand what he's really like. We were a bit hesitant about bringing over a dog from Taiwan, but after seeing the positive reviews here on Yelp, we felt better about proceeding. The application process was comprehensive but reasonable, and included Tina visiting our home to check out both us and the house, yard, and environs. It was very clear that Tina's passion/mission was to find good homes for these dogs. Apparently we checked out ok, and Tina flew the dog over from Taiwan. She fostered him for a few days to help him acclimate after the long flight, and I went over to visit during this time. I was very impressed at the comprehensive medical records that Tina had for the dog: vaccination records, (negative) test results for tick-borne diseases, and a spine x-ray. The financial arrangement was also very fair: reasonable price, pay when collecting the dog, but she doesn't cash the check until completion of a two week trial period. We've had Henry (now "Tai") for two weeks, and it has been going very well. Incredibly, there haven't really been any surprises with him, as the videos and Tina's insights about the dog gave us a very accurate picture of what we'd be getting. Tina did a great job of getting us a dog that is a good match for us. Overall, we were very impressed with Tina and ABC. This was my second time adopting a dog from Taiwan (the first was back in 2008), and I was really impressed at how much Tina and her folks kept the dogs' wellbeing front and center. The process was thorough and took some time, but it always felt like they were doing everything they could to make sure the fit was right for both dog and human. Some of the Bay Area rescue organizations have you meet your dog at the airport (which we did with our first dog), but I really appreciated the reasoning behind why ABC picks up the dogs and allows them to acclimate/get over jetlag/etc for a bit before meeting their family. I think it made the transition a lot smoother for our pup. In meeting and talking with Tina a number of times, it's clear how much she cares for these dogs and loves this work. I definitely recommend ABC Rescue, and think as with all rescues, you just have to go in with patience for the process and an understanding that the first dog you fall in love with may or may not end up being the right dog, and that's all part of the experience. We were looking for a new dog to love after our senior pup passed away. We found Domino through Petfinder and completed the application and crossed our fingers. Adopting through ABC requires patience and is a marathon, rather than a sprint. Tina and her team are dog lovers who want nothing but the best for their rescues, and it shows. For those unfamiliar with the steps, you first need to complete the application. If you're deemed a good fit, Tina will get in touch with you for an initial phone screen. Then there's the meet and greet, which we did at Domino's foster's home. If things go well, Tina will come visit your home with the dog, then there's a brief transition between homes before you get your new best friend. The entire process took about two weeks. Having said this, I believe there are dogs that aren't being fostered in the Bay Area and are still in Taiwan, though, so I can't speak to that experience. Domino was exactly how he was described. Definitely no issues and it was such a pleasure having him in our family. Unfortunately, one of our cats was extremely stressed by his normal, joyful, young dog energy (but her sister loved him, go figure), so we made the heartwrenching decision to return him to ABC's care. Tina was extremely gracious and made the whole process easy and judgment-free. ABC's policy is to hold the adoption fee check for two weeks, and she returned our check and adoption agreement. The two weeks to see if everyone is a good fit is very generous and necessary. I would not hesitate to adopt through ABC in the future. This was my first time getting a rescue dog, and the experience was extremely smooth. The application process is extremely thorough - for good reasoning, they don't want to just "get rid of dogs", they truly want these pups to go to great, loving homes. After the application was sent, they responded quickly and we went through visits to the home the dog we were interested in was being fostered, and they brought him to our house to see if the interaction went well with our dog we already had. ABCR has been the most thorough organization we've worked with at making sure the dog and the new owners are a great fit, they provided more info on the dog's good and risky points and were thorough in making sure we were a good match and could provide the dog a wonderful fur-ever home. Our dog, Coco, was everything they described and Coco has merged wonderfully with our family as the fit was perfect. If you want to suddenly get a dog the next day ABCR is not for you, it will take several weeks for the info exchange and a few visits to make sure you and your family and the dog are a match. Tina and her team put in months of rehab (fostering) for each dog so they want to make sure the dog continues with a great life, that should not be a weekend "on a whim" decision by people to get a dog and that is not what ABCR is all about. read more

They demanded a detailed application form which asked all the right questions for a good match for adoption. Roxy turned out to be everything we hoped for and more! I don't think people should be able to rate an adoption place if they haven't adopted a dog from them... COVID has luckily been beneficial for shelter pets finding homes. Just be grateful that good dogs are going to loving homes that foster families believe are the best fit. My experience was great adopting from here. It was a bit nerve wracking submitting the application and waiting for a response, but once I did, I got the chance to go to SFO to meet my best friend for the first time, which is a memory I'll cherish. I really like that each dog has EXTENSIVE youtube videos to look through to see the dog's temperament in a more natural setting. I couldn't be happier with my pup and she fits into our family so well. Tina is very careful in selecting individuals and loves dogs. We found the experience fantastic! We made a decision that a dog may be a good addition to our family but would likely take some time to find the right fit for our territorial older cat. We found Montse online and as I dove deeper into information provided by ABCR I found all of the detailed info and videos super helpful. I could see videos of Montse doing great with cats, saw many photos and videos, and somehow immediately knew she was the right fit for our family. When I reached out I was cautious knowing anything could happen, maybe she was already no longer available, maybe I wouldn't get a response etc. to my surprise, we got an immediate response requesting more information from us which we were thrilled to provide. We were so happy to have the process detailed, we too wanted to be sure it was the right fit for all! From here the process continued pretty quickly. We set up a first meet and greet visit. Montse was cautious and independent on our first visit, which for us was admirable! We took it nice and slow, arranging for 5 or so in person visits with Montse to allow her and us to get to know each other. And it was clear ABCR wanted the time to make sure we were a good, responsible fit for her as well. The team was so helpful through the process helping guides us to learn so much about caring for a dog, health, safety, and other concerns so that we could be sure we are the best dads we can be. It's been about 3 months since joining our family and Montse is the PERFECT fit. We were scared that while we loved her, she may not be welcomed by our cat. The introduction process which we anticipated could take weeks, to our complete surprise and JOY took just a matter of days. While not best buddies, both are able to be comfortable and cohabitate with zero aggression. We are so thrilled with our family now. We continue to stay connected with ABCR including getting together for play dates. We even stumbled on another ABCR family at a dog park! We contacted Tina at A Better Chance Rescue a little over two months ago interested in two dogs she had listed on Petfinder. The first had already found a home but the second, Edison, was available and perfect for us. One of Tina's volunteers came by our house to see what the space was like, evaluate if it was safe for Edison, answer any of our questions, and give us tips. It was really nice to have such an authority on dogs. All in she spent about an hour with us! Once we were approved we only had to wait until the next week to pick our dog up at SFO. We knew what to expect from the videos and questions we had answered, and he was definitely as described! We decided to buy the crate he came in for ease of transport. It did take awhile to get out of customs and Edison was on a later arriving flight, that's par for the course! He had soiled his crate so we were thankful for the towels we had brought to lay down under the crate in the car. He was ravenously hungry as the dogs fast before getting on the plane. For a couple days he was prone to try and eat anything he could! Edison is a very good motivated dog so it may not be as bad for other dogs but he was eating paper and the fabric ties on my pillows! We've had Edison for 2 months now and we are so so happy to have him in our life. He came with some good skills but of course we're still working on helping him be the best dog he can be. He's so sweet and smart. He's a great hiker! I think Tina mentioned the dogs go to at least 2 foster homes so they can see how they adapt to change and travel. Edison was out of his crate greeting us with kisses within seconds of opening it up! We've been searching to adopt for a while and once Shelter-in-Place occurred, finding a furry loved one became even more difficult. A Better Chance Rescue is top notch in pairing the best fit for both their dogs and adopting families! I've searched for over a year and with patience and a few let downs I couldn't be happier to adopt here! Tina and her volunteers spend so much time in evaluating their dogs so there's no surprises. They offer very detailed descriptions on so many points. As the other reviews show, it can be an issue if you submit an application and don't hear back from them. As stated on their website, they'll correspond with a good fit for their dog. With SO many applicants for a single dog, I can see how it's very difficult to respond to each one as they're all only volunteers. With that being said, with patience Tina did respond to me and had some inquiries about our family, home and any experience with past dogs. Tina coordinated a meet and greet at the foster home with Chibi aka Peanut. Shortly after Tina came for a home inspection and gave us a 2 week trial with Chibi. A month later our family couldn't be happier! ABC Rescue is very passionate about finding the right match between dog and adopter. We had such a wonderful experience working with A Better Chance! We had rather specific needs for a dog -- once that would be good with kids, good in an office with other dogs, and able to get used to traveling in a backpack (or ultimate goal is to take the dog on BART and a bike). We'd looked at a lot of shelters, but had a hard time with how fast we had to move, without much time to really think if the dog would be a good fit for our family. A Better Chance was barely more expensive than the other shelters, and we really loved how they provided so many videos on what the dogs behavior was like. To be honest, I found it more comforting to have 5+ videos (often more) of the dog in all sorts of situations than to have spent 15 minutes with a dog in one specific setting. Tina also came to do a home visit to make sure our apartment would be a good fit for a dog, and to talk about our needs. Our dog, Cacau, was matched with someone flying back who would be arriving on a day we were out of town. Tina kept Cacau at her house for a few days and we went to pick her up. I think we got unusually lucky with Cacau. She is so affectionate and easy! We've had her one week and she's only peed a few times inside, always on pee pads. We've taken her to work where she stays obediently near our desks when asked to, or follows us like a shadow and makes cautious friends with new dogs. She sleeps in our bed every night and feeds off of affection and attention. I can't recommend A Better Chance more highly. read more

We are so grateful to Tina for how dedicated, thorough, and passionate she is in matching her rescues to the right adopters. She cares deeply for the dogs and goes above and beyond to ensure that prospective adopters are prepared for a dog, able to care for the health and well-being of a dog, can provide lots of time and attention, and can offer a home with a yard that is dog-proof (i.e., tall fences!). Clearly, she wants to see a successful match where a dog will thrive with a happy dog owner. During our process, we had submitted two applications to A Better Chance (ABC) over three months. We didn't hear back the first time, but the second time, we received a phone call the next day. They asked for more information about us and more photos of our yard, and then immediately invited us to come visit Willow. We were vetted for over two hours, followed by a home inspection, before we were entrusted with the care of Willow. . . and even then, on a two-week trial. I have never heard of any dog rescue organization being so thorough and thoughtful in pairing dogs with owners. I've inquired, submitted an application, emailed them and no response AT ALL. Seems like the majority of the reviews on here have the same idea. I understand that there are more people applying to adopt. However, the fact that it's been months since I applied and they only have had a few dogs up for adoption makes it seem not very reasonable that they "are overwhelmed with applications" are not responding to me and many others. I truly do not understand where their success stories are from. If you read the reviews you'll see that the only people who are giving them 5 stars are the ones hoping they'll read their inquiry embedded in the reviews. This must be the worst experience yet trying to reach a rescue group to consider adopting some dogs. After much time trying to diligently complete their long application, with my background in years of volunteering at SPCAs and working with dogs, she just went straight to rejecting me based on her policy that I can't have roommates - I got quick no response on the email from my 3 pages long application and then it was the first thing the lady said bluntly & rudely on the phone when I attempted to call to have a further discussion. The lady won't want to listen to anything else I have to say (because she considers any more words pushy), and because she keeps repeating she "always" had "bad experience' with adopters with roommates and it's their "policy" and that they are an "international rescue". Wait, is this some kind of cultural clash? I can't make sense of this mindset. And never mind even asking potential adopters about other factors to consider the big picture for the dogs in need of permanent homes. The fact that I own my own house and have full control of what goes on is dismissible? What about a home visit FIRST then making a final call before you snap at people? Did they even read my application with the long essays and answers required to answer to come to this dismissive judgment? What a waste of time. They made me feel like I was trying to rob the dogs from them while I was just trying to set up a meet the dogs (open to any date due to covid-19 situation) to consider the adoption possibility? Instead, she came up with all kinds of things to say it's a NO because they have their policy set on "no roommates" based on bad experience? When I asked why don't you try to get to know me and my experience first, she couldn't wait with a response: "We don't know anyone who tries to adopt from us, we just go by experience, there are other dogs out there." - Total disrespect. Really? Maybe it's time to change the stiff mindset on how not to judge people so quickly instead, take the time to assess all factors and get to know the ones who are actually honest so you won't have any more bad experiences. Lastly, the dogs I was interested in meeting they had posted with "available" status, but she told me on the phone the dog is not in the US, it's still in Taiwan. Basically, this is the treatment I got from this experience: "Go away and stop talking because all I see is that you have roommates, therefore, you are automatically disqualified to ask about any dogs & dismissed." Unbelievable. I am still in shock. I rarely feel about anything so strongly that I had to leave a review. I have never come across fellow dog people or rescue groups like this. I hope my review will change the way this international rescue group screens and treats dog lovers who are trying to find animals to adopt and unfortunately came across them and their prohibited policies. read more

We adopted Duke (formerly Daniel) a little over a month ago. He has made our lives better in so many ways in that short time - making us laugh, requiring us to be present, and loving unconditionally. I have spent a lot of time working with rescues, so was surprised to learn that these dogs are fostered in Taiwan. Candidly, I was hesitant to adopt a dog without first meeting him, but when my boyfriend and I saw his profile, and the videos they had of him, we just knew he was meant to be ours and decided to go for it (NOTE: watch the videos and read their descriptions - you will learn a TON about your future pup that way). The adoption process is very comprehensive. It includes an application, home visit, and plenty of contact with the organization. It was comforting to know that we were working with a group of people who truly care that their dogs go to the right home. Duke did take a little time to warm up. He wasn't keen on us coming close to him for the first day and half. Keep in mind that these dogs are put in a crate and come over by long plane ride, which would be overwhelming to anyone. It takes patience and time, but it's 1000% worth it. He's still wary of strangers, but once he figured out we were the source of chicken, walks, and love, he came around pretty quickly. The foster network in Taiwan clearly takes very good care of their dogs - Duke was pretty much house trained, very well crate trained, picked up on commands quickly, and has zero separation anxiety. I highly recommend adopting through A Better Chance. Tina deeply cares about the dogs she places, and it shows. I can't imagine my life without Duke, and am so incredibly grateful for hard work and passion of this rescue. read more

We adopted a dog (Snow) from A Better Chance Rescue less than 2 weeks ago. We have never encountered any other rescue organizations who invests more time and efforts in vetting and socializing their dogs than A Better Chance Rescue. The few dog profiles we have reviewed had videos showing that the dogs have been socialized with adults, children, dogs and cats. Tina told us that often times, they have to find multiple foster families for their dogs in order to ensure the dogs have the opportunity to be socialized with children, dogs and cats. Before receiving a phone call from A Better Chance Rescue, we have applied for numerous dogs and were not getting many responses from other rescue organizations despite being experienced pet owners of both canines and felines for over 10 years. We presume it's likely because we have cats and the dogs we applied for have never been around cats, so another family without cats were chosen instead. Lucky for us, Snow is really good with cats, as shown in her profile. We are also very pleased that A Better Chance Rescue allows a refundable 2-week trial after adopting the dog. We didn't foresee any reasons why we would return our dog but are glad that they are willing to do a 2-week trial; it made it a lot less stressful in making such an important long term decision to adopt a new dog. It shows that their focus is to find a forever home for the dogs instead of just unloading them. Tina had insisted that we keep in touch to let her know how Snow is doing, and that they would provide any help if needed. She also sent us the social media page of the rescue organization in Taiwan where they get their dogs from. I saw the pictures of Snow when they first rescued her, we could barely recognize her; she had been through so much before we met her; she has transformed since being rescued by the rescue group. It's rare that you find someone as passionate about dog rescue as Tina is. She cares about the health and well-being of her dogs more than any rescue group I've ever worked with, and we've been adopting dogs for a long time. What I appreciated most about her approach is the level of detail she provides, and that she requests of you. I've never seen so much information about a dog in their bio page than I have on A Better Chance Rescue. From their health information, to photos, videos, personalities, etc. It made finding our dream dog significantly easier, which is critically important when it comes to adopting something that will be a meaningful part of your lives for years to come. It's true that Tina is strict about who adopts her dogs, but it's for good reason! She cares. She cares a lot. She wants to make sure her dogs are going to good homes and that they'll be loved and well taken care of. If she's not 100% confident in your household or home, she will hold off. This was our 1st time using a rescue organization vs. a shelter to adopt from & I can tell you they are A*M*A*Z*I*N*G! We saw a dog that looked like we should meet her, we filled out the application, and scheduled a greeting. While the dog we set out to meet wasn't a match for us, there was another sweet gal there and we clicked, Olivia/Misha. After spending time talking and interacting with the dogs & human foster parents. We knew Olivia would make a great addition to our family. We were able to see almost all of her life's journey from a puppy in Twain with lots of training and then to her foster dad Jeff, here in the Bay Area. Pictures and videos aplenty. Tina then came and did a home visit. Getting to know her a bit has been a joy. She has a heart for the dogs she brings for adoption and most importantly she makes certain the fit is good for the DOG! Jeff, her foster dad has gone above and beyond in helping to educate us about her daily schedule, feeding, commands and advise in general. This has been one of the most helpful pieces of the adoption. Jeff really really cares about his fosters. It seriously has taken a village of people with a heart for dogs to make certain the fit is good for everyone. We adopted our amazing puppy Ollie from ABC Rescue about a month ago, and we've been very impressed with how thorough this organization is in ensuring their dogs go to good, caring homes. This org is primarily run by one woman, Tina, who cares deeply about the wellbeing of her dogs and only responds to applications that meet her adoption criteria. So if you haven't heard back from her, keep trying! Tina is very focused on ensuring that her dogs are placed with caregivers who can meet their needs. Our pup had a rough start, but thanks to the care and training ABC gave him, he came to us completely non-aggressive and was already crate-trained, potty-trained, and leash-trained. He had already been socialized around other dogs and people, so while he is shy and timid by nature, it's been a wonderful process to bring him around our family, friends, and their dogs. We sent pictures of our home and Tina asked us questions about our activity level, family-composition, and what was important to us in order to match us with a dog that would fit well into our family. She also checked in weekly and did a home visit a few weeks after adoption to ensure that Ollie was settling in well. This is what makes ABC Rescue stand apart from other rescue orgs - - Tina is very thorough in ensuring that her dogs go to caring homes that can meet their needs.
