After we were told our longtime groomer, Manny, had retired, we started looking for a new groomer. Giovanni came highly recommended by our trainer and did a great job with our labradoodle, Izzy. The location (Pets in the City) was different than what we were used to, but the quality of his work was excellent. He was also a bit more expensive, but the quality absolutely justified the price. We later found out that Manny had not retired, and since he knows Izzy so well, we'll be going back to him. I've been bringing my dog here for the past month and also boarded him for a few days. He has a lot of energy -- even with three walks a day and hours of running at the park, he usually still wants to play when he gets home. Daycare here has made a huge difference. It really helps burn off his energy, and he's much less nippy when he comes home. After a full day, he's happily tired and just wants to sleep. Definitely recommend them! read more

Been a regular customer to drop off my dog. Recently there has been on going changes in the Young St location. Although my dog has been anxious with haircuts the quickest solution for the team was proposing to medicate to calm him down or bring him in more often - which I've been very agreeable to minus the medication. This recent time, the new groomer did not mention to me there were two accidents / cuts on the inner thigh and private areas he had made until I noticed my dog licking the area all nite and into the week. I realized it may have been an accident but no mention to me at all. It's unprofessional and disheartening to know that this is how they handle their grooming and customer service. I emailed pictures and explained why I was upset to Ashley but I truly did not feel they were sincere in their apology. Instead, it was the dogs fault for his anxious behavior & it's only the owners problem. I felt like they did not take much time to really care what happened or provide expert advice on handling him. I rarely write negative reviews but, this was something I needed to share with other owners who plan to bring their dogs here. They have no patience with dogs that need more attention. I have found a new groomer who spends more time and has compassion towards our animals. read more

Well don't go here for a dog bath! I was very specific when making my appointment for my schnoodle Dudley. BATH ONLY. No trimming and no cutting period. I even reiterated the request when dropping him off. When I picked him up I was VERY DISAPPOINTED and upset. He had been shaved on his stomach and private area. He was nicked twice by a razor on his inner leg. When this area is growing out it will be itchy and will cause licking! Also they shaved off the beautiful hair on the bridge of his nose and around his eyes that were not too long but a signature schnoodle look. BATH ONLY was not honored AND they charged me extra! We used to leave our Lola with our vet....who we adore! But after speaking with them, they intimated that we might want a more personal experience. They gave fantastic care to Lola but there was little social contact. Pets in the City was the perfect fit. They scheduled a trial date to make sure Lola would be comfortable in that setting. Lola is afraid of other dogs but they take great care of her while we are on the mainland. I highly recommend them and will absolutely continue to trust them with her whenever we have an unavoidable trip. read more

I just started taking my doggie to them for kenneling while we go on trips. Ashley, is so sweet. She seems to be a true animal lover. I didn't get to see the inside but they did say the kennels are very large, I do have a small dog so it doesn't matter that much. They have moved to a new location just down the street from their old location a bit closer to Keeaumoku Street. I believe if you stay on a Wednesday, you can get you doggie bathed and nails clipped. It's a smaller play area that the dogs are in so Pets in the City is selective about taking smaller dogs that play well with others and ensure the dogs go out on walks to burn off excess energy. Dogs can come in for half days (4 hours), a full day (open 6 am - 6 pm), or board overnight. They have packages for regulars and pay as you go. If you are interested in sending your pet to Pets in the City, you need to make an appointment to have your dog evaluated first and provide a copy of his/her uodated medical records. My beautiful precious Buddy baby boy a 14 year old pap/pom/chi mix needed grooming and my regular groomer was too booked up, so I took a chance with Pets in the City, This was a BIG MISTAKE! So when I got there I told them I want Buddy to have a puppy cut! You know like the length of hair when they were a puppy! My dog didn't get a puppy cut, it was more of a lion cut with big fur around the neck because if they were trying to give him a puppy cut they failed The haircut looked like it was half done, rushed and sloppy! The tail wasn't finished uneven , choppy and there was an 8 inch clump of the tail that got missed! So there was an obvious 8 inch tail on his tail. The left butterfly wing had more black hair removed than the other side, making the haircut off balance! The hair on his back wasn't short enough then the lions mane around his neck was way to long and thick I asked for an anal gland expression to be done, so why was my dog still scooting? The customer service was worst of all! The shitty haircut was nothing compared to the shitty customer service! They refused to connect me to the Mgr/Owner and she refused to return my call! BEFORE, the owner of Pets in the City called me back about the bad haircut, she called the cops on me and had me trespassed and refused to fix their mistake and refused a refund plus I paid $75 plus a $20 dollar tip the exchange took place outside and they never gave me a receipt! The owner of Pets in the City needs to learn how to handle a complaint without going emotional, going into a panic and calling the cops on the customer for making a friggen complaint about a shitty haircut from Pets in the Shitty! I hope nobody suffers the abuse I did, from the lack of quality customer service from Pets in the City! They couldn't even handle a friggen puppy cut! After 14 years of using pet groomers all over Honolulu always asking for a puppy cut, I've never had a problem with anybody else, but this so called groomer Pets in the City couldn't even get a puppy cut right! And refused to fix it or refund my money! And I've never had a business call the police on me over a complaint about a shitty haircut! My sister recommended Pets in the City for daycare for my puppy.    when I went to pick up my pup, I was told that he was injured, assuming it was with another dog. No one had called me to let me know my pup hurt his left eye. Also, I was informed that no one witnessed his injury but they heard him crying so they then checked on him.  I took my pup to the veterinarian today, and he was prescribed pain, antibiotics, and steroid medications. In their terms and conditions they clearly state they are not liable for any injuries that occur on the premises....there should be an addendum that states they are not liable to show empathy or concern if any injuries occur during your pet's stay. The owner was notified of the incident by her staff but did not reach out to me to inquire about my puppy's wellbeing. I updated her staff on his condition and even sent pictures of his injuries. Still no response from the daycare owner Ashley...I am disheartened and disappointed by her silence and lack of compassion for my pup.  I have decided to no longer take my pup to daycare there. To current or future dog owners who are considering taking your pets to Pets in the City, please be aware that there are at times only two dog handlers (attendees) caring/watching up to almost thirty dogs. And, small, medium, and large-sized dogs are in daycare together. I'm glad that my puppy is getting better and is still happy. read more

My dog was in need of some company during the time I was at work. Another Doggy Day care was recommended by several people but they were inflexible with the scheduling of the pet evaluation. Pets in the City manager was willing to work with me so that I could drop my dog off before work for the evaluation and leave her there all day, if she passed for pretty much the same price as all day care. Their competitors wanted twice that amount! The staff is pretty friendly but most importantly, good with the dogs. They allow the dogs to roam freely, separating unspayed and unneutered dogs. The dogs also are allowed alone time in a kennel. Most of the dogs are small but once and a while there is an older, large dog.This works out nicely since small dog owners neednt worry about a large dog picking on a smalleer one. The only reason that they didn't receive 5 stars is because of the chemical floor cleaner. It is so overwhelming, I wonder how good it is for the dogs to be walking around in that. Such a wonderful staff there. We left our 45 lb pitbull there for a week and I was worried sick but I had absolutely no reason to worry! They posted videos on their Instagram daily and didn't seem to mind when I called and checked in during the week. They require a doggy day care day prior to boarding which they give coupons for, making it free. I was very happy with the facility and the price but mostly the staff. There was a lot of dogs there and every time I went in, even a week later to pick up our dog they knew who we were and who we were picking up. We will definitely use them again next year when we go on vacation (and would use them for our cat as well if they boarded cats). read more

We decided to leave our dog here for a few nights of overnight stay. We had no idea where to board him and the closest place seemed to be Pets in the City. He stayed here for one night after his evaluation and the next day we received a phone call from a staff member about our dog "yapping all night" and disrupting her sleep. They basically asked us not to leave him there for overnight stays any longer. We completely understood and felt badly about the situation, however, the way the staff came off to us was extremely rude and with lots of attitude. Also, there were a few times when we saw the staff there screaming at the dogs and well, it just seems like not all of them are "dog people" or enjoy their jobs very much. I think if people are paying you to look after their dogs, you should probably at least try to act like you like doing it. read more

I was planning on bringing my dog here for boarding, but after the evaluation, I decided to try somewhere else. The facility is small and consists of one room where all dogs of all sizes play together and a back room where some kennels are located. The dogs that were there when we brought our dog in seemed happy, but there were a few big dogs mixed in that made me nervous about leaving our small, shy dog mixed in. Also, there was something off about the staff. It seemed like we were testing the patience of the staff when asking questions about the requirements for boarding and trying to understand the evaluation period. This is the first time we've tried to board our dog since moving here and we weren't familiar with the need for an evaluation process. Even with the facility and staff issues (which I chalked up to me being overprotective of my dog and minor communications problems), we were still planning on leaving our dog here based on the location, which is very close to our apartment. The last straw, however, was when we brought our dog in for the evaluation and one of the staff members grabbed him by his leash and pulled him towards her. Anyone who has a dog or works with dogs should know that you don't force them by pulling on the leash, especially on the first meeting. This event led to our dog acting aggressively and he tried to bite the staff members. Of course, the staff decided that he was not able to be socialized during an initial evaluation and wanted us to bring him in for another evaluation before they would allow us to board him there. Instead, we decided to try another facility where the staff knows how to work with small, scared dogs. read more

The one star is simply for the fact that the manager understood my grievance and reimbursed my money. Basically the second day into my puppy staying at this establishment I picked him up early and he had a big gash on his face. I questioned what happened. They said they didn't know. I noticed blood. I asked what happened, they said oh that's not his blood. Look dogs fight. But the fact that I was told that there would mostly be small dogs when I brought him there and then I noticed about 30 dogs in that small ass building and a lot of them were huge, was very sad and didn't seem right, for the dogs nor my 10lb puppy. Needless to say I was pissed for being lied to and that my dog was traumatized. He's been skittish ever since. Good thing I have pet insurance. read more

I had been searching for a good pet boarding / grooming facility for my lovable Tibetan Spaniel Sasha for quite some time. Luckily, I check my emails daily and Groupon had a deal for Pets In The City. I checked Yelp before finalizing my Groupon order and found the reviews to be helpful in my decision. I finally made an appointment for Sasha a week before the Groupon expiration. The Groupon grooming included a tearless Pacifica shampoo bath, nail trimming, and ear cleaning. Not super extensive, but it covers the basics. We dropped her off around 3:30pm and picked her up at 5pm. (They called me to let me know that she was done.) I really like Pets In The City -- the place is clean, the staff are friendly, and they get the job done. Sasha came home smelling great and fresh! :) I was pleased with the Groupon package (even though it was pretty basic) and will most likely look into bringing Sasha back for more grooming sessions. Some friends gave us two weeks of doggie day care at Pets in the City as a gift. We were a little concerned that the size of the crates seemed to be geared toward small dogs (ours is 45 pounds), but went ahead and left her nevertheless. (The dogs seemed happy, and like I said, it was a gift.) After the first day, our pooch loved it there. She came home exhausted (no small feat for our high-energy girl) and couldn't wait to get inside and "say hello" when we brought her back the next day. We will probably use them again, and would (and have) recommended them to other doggie owners. read more

This has been one of the greatest Groupon purchases I've made! I wish I had bought more. What a great deal: $75 for 5 days of doggie daycare pick up after 6pm and includes one bath and nail trim. Pets in the City daycare area is small and loud but there's enough room for the little ones to run around and play. When my lil Dexter comes home from a day of playing with his doggie friends, he is tired and just falls asleep. After each day of daycare, we receive a note with an evaluation of his day and lists who his buddies were for that day. Without the Groupon, the rates are a little high. Like any boarding facility, they require vet info and up to date vaccinations. read more

I was referred here by my vet, and I'm so happy that I was! I take my puppy there sometimes so he can have some socialization and not be cooped up in the house. It's especially nice since it's so close to where I live. When we park he's so excited, he literally pulls me to the door! The staff here is very kind to me and my pup :) the price is also very reasonable, I think. I like how pets in the city gives me a paper describing how my pet's day was and who his new friends are. My schnauzer is some kind of high maintenance, so it always worries me when I have to find a kennel for him. Thanks to Yelp (and a coworker's suggestion), we tried Pets in the City. We had to leave him for three or four hours prior to our first trip so that the staff could watch out he interacted with the other dogs and the staff. Thankfully, it went well and we started to use Pets in the City for all of our off island trips...from two days to two weeks. Stays are a little pricey, but completely worth my peace of mind that my dog is being well cared for. They've got great hours, which accommodate early drop offs and late pickups. I took my dogs there for grooming as the Groupon was going to expire. At first due to the barking they were a bit apprehensive. Upon pickup, I was truly impressed, they seemed relaxed and happy, unlike the other places I took them too. When I got home, I noticed the fine, details that were attended too, nails were clipped and not sharp like other places, nor did I have to pay extra to get it done! Dogs smelt great, were happy to see me and go home. Would I use Pets in the City again? Definately for grooming. The staff will lie to you about your animal. When I asked why they take collars off the dogs it was explained to me that a dog once died in their care from being strangled by another dog packing it around by the collar...no lie. They told me that right in the store. We were customers for over a year and when we needed ours dogs to have overnight care we were denied with next to no notice and have to scramble and cancel flights and trips. I love this place. My Min Pin Chihuahua has been there for about two years. He used to be very aggressive but they keep him a darling when he is there. I am in no way connected to the Pets in the City, nor did I know the owners prior to my dog going there. They do my dog's superb grooming too. I say superb because my dog has problem paws in one area. It's not a problem for them. Two years. They have a great monthly package. Brought our puppy in for an evaluation today. The owner, Ashley, was barely friendly and seemed really distracted. It appeared she was the only person there. Started with our puppy in the staging area. She said she would individually introduce each dog to our pup before putting him in the main area. She introduced him to one dog. She sat in there with them for a few minutes but then went to do other stuff and answered the phone. I was watching all the other dogs interacting and I noticed a pair "playing" but really one of the dogs was not comfortable with the play and was displaying obvious fear aggression. Ashley either didn't notice or didn't care. I went outside to get my phone from the car, leaving my boyfriend inside with our pup. He came outside to tell me it would be an hour before Ashley was going to let our pup into the main area and asked if we wanted to wait. I told him I did not like this place and we should just go. We discussed why for a minute and then headed back inside to find our puppy in the main area with all the dogs!!! Ashley was on the phone again. Two dogs started ganging up on our puppy and I told her this is not ok and I want him removed from the area. She ignored me. I tried to open one door and could not so I went to the door next to her and the reception area to get my puppy. She yelled at me that I couldn't be in there. I grabbed our puppy and left. She then had the audacity to tell my boyfriend, "maybe this isn't the right place for you." REALLY!?! I thought I made that pretty obvious already. Granted, it was a Saturday and there were maybe only 12 dogs total. Not sure as there were some back rooms where there were obviously other dogs. Even so, only one person there? Not to mention, the one community water bowl was disgusting and I know dog daycares smell like dog but it was pretty gross. This is a potentially traumatizing place for your pup, especially if they are young. Also, I have never felt compelled to write a yelp review before this but I think puppy parents should be warned. These people do not really pay attention to your dog. Oh, and the door in one of the back rooms looked like it had been axed by Jack in The Shining. I asked her what happened and she said a dog scratched it. Looked like that dog was trying to escape for his life. Not hard to go to Reuse and get a new door or put some plywood up or something.
