In August, our then 11 1/2 year old dog Freddy was diagnosed with lymphoma. Our regular vet referred us to the specialty care of Dr. Siedlecki at Pets Referral Center. It is partly the luck of the draw in that he has a subtype of lymphoma that is most responsive to chemotherapy treatment; but I also have to give credit to everyone at PRC for how well Fred is doing 4 months after diagnosis. Dr. Siedlecki's advice and guidance have been invaluable; and the vet techs, especially Mary and Anji, are loving, and marvelous with the pets in their care. It has given us great comfort to know that Fred is in the hands of the good people at PRC. read more

Very up front about costs, they print out a sheet and go over options with a plan A, B, and C depending on what's going on and budget. We ended up here today after our 13 week old puppy lapped up a few sips of a spilled latte while we scrambled to clean up the mess. After calling our own vet and 2 other urgent care facilities (one that was kind and amazing, but overloaded...another that was overloaded and bordered on rude & unconcerned), we got in touch with PETS Referral. Phone staff was kind and attentive, and we were able to get our puppy in for treatment within 30 minutes. From the moment we got there, the staff treated us with urgency and kindness. Dr. Kane was caring and did a great job of explaining things and putting my mind at ease. I wouldn't want to repeat this day, but I am really glad to know PETS Referral is out there for moments like these. read more

My dog is very reactive to people and has previously needed to be sedated for simple things like drawing blood. She tore her nail badly and my normal vet can't sedate on the weekend, so they referred us here. They were responsive and helpful over the phone, and then when we arrived we were seen promptly - within 20 minutes or so, and there were 4-5 people ahead of us. The vet was unfazed by my dog growling at him, was flexible in figuring out how to get her vitals, and was able to quickly assess the torn nail. It had improved substantially overnight and he determined that we didn't actually have to do anything - so said we were free to go and didn't have to pay anything. Overall a really good experience, and I'll bring her back here again if we have an emergency. read more

You should know that their only surgeon is currently under investigation by the California Veterinary Board. I won't go into details, but he very nearly killed my dog, and at the very least caused him horrible pain and suffering for nearly a month due to total, complete, inexcusable incompetence. I am not joking. You can contact the California Veterinary Board and learn all about it. Pets Referral Center offered me no explanation, much less an apology from the surgeon. Sadly, the staff are wonderful, but it seems the hospital administrator has ZERO safeguards in place for surgical procedures, or even basic checklists. Took in a bulldog with a broken tibia. He was just put in line behind all the other pets. No one triaged him. He was in shock and in pain. I was told the wait was over an hour so I drove him to another vet. He had a spiral fracture of his tibia! He should have been evaluated when he came into Pets Referral. read more

I can't say enough about the quality of care at this facility. Everyone I encountered was thorough, professional, and attentive. The vet in Richmond referred my cat Leo to PETS Referral Center at 5:30 pm with a possible urethral obstruction, apparently fairly common with male cats. They'd phoned ahead and he was admitted immediately. Once they had him on an IV, Dr. Lamparter sat with me and reviewed all possible options and complications. After I left, she phoned me at 8:15 pm and gave me an update, and another doctor called at 7:30 the following morning with another update. When I went to pick up Leo at noon, a technician gave me his medications and went over the detailed instructions on his care. She made sure all my questions were answered to my satisfaction. Fortunately I had a clean credit card, because you have to pay up front (no checks), an amount between the lowest and highest estimate based on what kind of treatment is anticipated--they refunded me 2/3 when it came time to settle up. If you're wondering if you should get pet insurance, you might just want to bite the bullet and get some! read more

Dr Marcus Dela Cruz provided outstanding service to my injured rabbit on June 28. The rabbit (Lily) was in pain and not eating... Dr Dela Cruz found that she had multiple hip fractures and tended her through the night. I greatly appreciated his frequent updates, and attempts to find someone capable of surgery on her. Although surgery was not possible, he sent her home with meds and detailed instructions on how to provide them. Now Lily is much better: hopping around (albeit on 3 legs), eating well, and back to her old tricks. Thank you Dr Dela Cruz and PETS! read more

Would leave 0 stars if I could! This place is HORRIFIC. Brought in our dog who was profusely vomiting yellow and white foam, over and over and over. They took us into a room and made us wait 15 minutes to get his vitals checked after he puked all over the room. They told us there was a wait (obviously.) that there was 2 patients ahead of us and hopefully wouldn't take long. We waited over an hour, no word. No check in, nothing. KNOWING our dog was vomiting everywhere!! We waited so long we ALL fell asleep!!! My boyfriend finally opened the door and someone said "can I help you with something, sir?" He said "yeah, I just wanted to make sure you guys hadn't forgotten about us?" She replied rude as ever "I don't work on the sidelines." Someone else came in and let us know that it is the ER (DUH!) and that they got really busy, so busy they couldn't see our puking dog. Told us "critical condition" patients had showed up which pushed us back. WELP! SEE YA! Thanks for wasting our fucking time. If you're white, they will do everything to make sure you and your furry friend are seen PROMPTLY. #RACISTS. What a fucking shame. read more

Very, very expensive. It's an emergency hospital but give me a break it's ridiculously expensive. I had to wait almost 5 hours for my cat to be seen. She wasn't in any kind of immediate need to be seen according to the staff. If your isn't bleeding or falling over then you will get bumped down the list. I do understand that emergencies should take precedence but waiting 5 hours with your kitty in a crate is absolutely miserable. They need more staff! read more

Overall, everyone was friendly, but the wait times did not seem to correlate to when you originally arrived at the clinic. I arrived around 3pm and I was told there were quite a few pets ahead of me ~10 and that I could go home and wait for a call. I received a call at 8pm saying that a vet would be able to see me soon. I arrived back to the vet around 8:20pm. There were a few people waiting and a walk in as well, all of whom were serviced before I was. Eventually my pup was evaluated by the vet. He was friendly and welcoming. He decided to order some fecal tests and blood work. Overall, i think the actual vet service was pretty good. However, the support staff did not seem to show compassion about the long wait. The was a gentleman who asked my name after I had been waiting a few hours- he told he that he would tell me a wait time - but never followed up. I didn't leave the vet until about 12am. Essentially most of my afternoon and evening (3pm-12am) was spent awaiting service from the vet staff. read more

I have had so many great experiences at Pets. Once my male cat had mites in his ears from running wild in the yard. Erin Updegrove actually showed me the microscopic image of the mites and spent a lot of time with me. It was quite a night. I was having a glass of red wine when my cat started jumping around. I got on the freeway, although I probably should not have been driving. After something like 10 hours the problem was 100% solved. I have other pets and experiences at this location and although not all of them were as seamless as my experience with Dr. Updegrove, for the most part the problem has always been solved. I recommend taking your pets here, after hours, in an emergency. read more

We came here to see Dr. Cecile Siedlecki, who used to be the oncologist at BAVS in San Leandro. Our 9-year-old kitty was unfortunately diagnosed with pancreatic cancer over Thanksgiving, and we wanted to do an oncology consult ($150) to see if there was anything we could do for her outside of palliative care. PHONE ADMIN: Before I talk about Dr. Siedlecki, the phone staff who I called were amazing. They were very clear about what to expect, what paperwork we needed to fill out online in advance, and we were able to schedule an appointment within 10 days (could've been sooner if we weren't out of town). We were also able to email our cat's medical records (blood work, ultrasound imaging) directly to them in advance. LOCATION / PARKING: Oncology is in the "Annex" building which is across the parking lot / next door to the emergency clinic. It wasn't a big deal that we got a little lost at first but when you're nervous and your kitty gets stressed about car rides and loud sounds (the clinic is off of busy University Ave), it's just nice to know in advance. DR. SIEDLECKI: She is amazing. We did wait about 30 minutes after our appointment time before our cat was taken in, and then we waited in our car for Dr. Siedlecki to call us to discuss. However, the information we got was invaluable and much more detailed and specific than what our regular vet could provide (though Dr. Innes at Mill Valley Cat Clinic is great by the way). A few things we learned (in case anyone else reading this has a cat with a similar diagnosis; though please defer to your cat's vet or Dr. Siedlecki's advice on their specific situation over anything shared below): 1. Grinding while eating is a sign of pain. We were given buprenorphine to administer as needed to help keep our cat comfortable. 2. We started doing daily prednisolone (steroid) instead of the as-needed triamcinolone to help stimulate our cat's appetite and keep her feeling as comfortable as possible. Cerenia (anti-nausea/vomiting) can also be given regularly. 3. It's not advisable to drain the inevitable abdominal fluid buildup (via centesis, or Lasix) that accompanied our cat's cancer. At that point, it'll extend their lives by a short window at best, and most owners regret or realize that it probably would've been best to move forward with euthanasia at that time. (Our cat had palpable tumor nodules that you could feel through her belly that were leaking fluid. Our regular vet also echoed this same recommendation when it got closer to our kitty's last days and we were debating centesis vs euthanasia). 4. We had already started on Palladia as a last Hail Mary resort and Dr. Siedlecki confirmed that this would not be harmful, and was probably the only treatment/medication option worth trying if we wanted, as pancreatic cancer has no known or proven cure. 5. She also walked us through the pros and cons of various options we could pursue and was very mindful and clear that if we did want to pursue a needle biopsy or if we wanted her team to prescribe any medications, that we would have to go through the same baseline bloodwork and tests through their clinic to establish our cat as a patient. In other words, she saved us a lot of money and advised that it's probably not worth becoming their actual patient because by policy/regulations, they would have to repeat a lot of the tests and procedures already done ($$$). We really appreciated her clearly laying all of this out for us and truly felt she had our (and our cat's) best interests in mind. 6. We already knew from our regular vet and online reading (I highly recommend joining some of the Facebook Groups that exist: Felines with Cancer, Cats with Pancreatitis) that our kitty had 30-60 days to live, and Dr. Siedlecki confirmed this. However she was very kind, clear, and compassionate throughout our entire conversation and let us know we could email with any follow-up questions (which we did take her up on). Unfortunately, we had to make the decision to put our sweet kitty down a few days before Christmas, exactly a month after the ultrasound that found her cancer, and a little more than 2 months after her first symptoms of vomiting and not eating started. I emailed Dr. Siedlecki, our regular vet, and the breeder that we adopted our retired mom cat from to let them know. A few days later, I was gardening outside and someone came by with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. I thought "Oh, is this from my husband to make up for the fight we had last night?" I should've known better :D. Turns out, it was from PetsReferral with a very sweet note sending their condolences for our loss. We were not expecting such thoughtfulness after a single visit, but it really meant a lot and is actually what prompted me to write this very long review. Highly recommend. read more

Let me start by saying, if you find yourself at PETS Referral, you're probably already in a heightened sense of stress. I was no different...and this review is based on the fact that this was the only place in the Bay Area that I could find to provide a surgical consult for my puppy in a reasonable time frame. She broke her leg and most places had consults a few weeks out....some were months away! My puppy was stable but I didn't want to let too much time pass before getting her surgery. PETS referral was able to get me in for a consult within a few days and performed surgery the same day. First impressions are huge...and the smell of bleach and cleanliness greets you in the lobby. The staff were helpful and efficient. I did have an appointment so did not have to wait at all. The surgeon, Dr. Moser, proactively answered all of my questions and I immediately felt as though I had come to the right place. I didn't know what to expect in terms of price and I was still surprised. However, I can't tell you how much I thought it would be for orthopedic surgery either. I was grateful that I had pet insurance and even though I would have to pay out of pocket and get reimbursed, I was at peace about making a significant financial decision and not letting the cost get in the way of that decision. I cannot imagine the stress of trying to make decisions about your pets care and being constrained financially...I would have still paid for my pets surgery without insurance but it would have been a much heavier financial decision. In any event, the surgery was successful and she is healing nicely (she's already back to being her demanding self). We have several weeks of rehab ahead but I am confident that our post op care will be top notch. I read a number of reviews before coming here and those that are negative were about emergency care (the wait) and cost (um, it's emergency care)...my overall experience was positive. My initial emergency visit was at a different hospital (and the wait was long and it was also expensive)...so I hope those negative reviews don't sway you from giving this place a try. read more

First off, let's get something straight - this is an EMERGENCY 24 HOUR animal clinic. They do not take appointments. It is first-come, first-serve for seeing the doctor. Yes, it might take a while before you are seen. Bring a book, use your phone; they have free wifi, you can bring your laptop. Is it expensive? Yes, no sh*t - this is an urgent care center! You are paying for the convenience and emergency medical expertise. In an ER setting, the costs are higher as more supplies are needed (fluids, diagnostics, etc). Now that we got that out of the way I can continue with my review. I brought in my special needs cat for constipation issues. Chris took my initial call and he was caring and reassuring (thank you, Chris). My 8 year old cat has a lengthy medical history and the vets and techs were careful to review her records. In total, my cat was at PETS Referral Center for three nights. I received timely updates from the DVM at least twice a day. I also visited my cat while she was in the hospital. The staff successfully resolved my cat's constipation issue. All the staff and Drs I interacted with were kind and knowledgeable. Thank you shout-outs to Dr. Barlia, Dr. Jennings, Dr. Laxineta, Dr. Updegrove and the attending vet techs at PETS Referral Center. Upon arriving on a Sunday, our dog had his vitals taken immediately and was seen by the doctor in 30 minutes. Much quicker than the quoted 3-6 hour wait by other animal hospitals in the area. I have very mixed feelings about this place. On the good side..... they are very close to me, open 24/7 and the front staff/receptionists are very kind. The low side........they are so expensive give you conflicting information and make it extremely difficult to make good decisions for a sick and or dying pet. I understand they are a business but they will give you a HUGE, MONSTER financial quote......then generally end up charging you about half, which us still extraordinarily expensive. I have had to come here a couple times with different pets because my work hours are so odd. The first time their original quote was close to 6k on the high side. It ended up costing me $600 at my regular vet. But I had to do some fast negotiating and insist on a different plan of care for my dog. The second time I had to spend 3k just to find out my dog was going to die anyways. I guess my big complaint is that the vets kinda know whats going on with your pet, but dont really tell you everything............they keep your pet......do expensive tests ..........and the outcome is bad anyways. They are very nice but need to focus on giving real pricing and real, consistent prognosis. read more

We came in scared for our little kitty Aloetta. She was very sick with which was obviously a nasty URI. Our cat was diagnosed with FHV and mycoplasma at the pets referral center. Since these are 2 very common things for cat to have, we are very confused on why she wasn't being treat for these this from the get go. (Even after we mentioned our other cats have had these problems in the past) Our doctors originally told us she was going to be switching from one antibiotics to another. Which we thought was going to be doxycycline.. (which is the correct antibiotic) our cat was on the wrong antibiotics for 5 days... 3 days in your facility and 2 days at home with us. We got a phone call Tuesday afternoon telling us to come pick up the correct antibiotics. When my husband and I got this phone call all we heard was crickets... (chirp) We were completely shocked/ confused that the doctor had told us it was doxycycline was the correct antibiotic as we thought she had been already been taking it. We had talked to a few friends of ours after the fact who work in this field and seemed shocked that she wasn't given steroids and doxycycline right away.. After explaining what she was going through to another vet, they immediately asked me if she was on Steroids and Doxycycline as well and said we got a strangely poor diagnosis from your center. Another issue we had was when the doctors were encouraging us to put our animal down for being "uncomfortable" or "feeling crummy". Our cat "just wasn't improving" according to the doctors. The doctors were still waiting on a test result to see what bacteria was in her nose and how to treat it properly, but were still being encouraging us to put her down. Now we can understand that maybe she wasn't showing improvement, but if they hadn't received a vital test result for our animal why would you recommend putting her down... As you can imagine this not only caused my husband and I a lot of mental and emotional distress, but also caused us thousands of dollars. Luckily when we went to go put our animal down, she was a beacon of energy when we hit the room with her. We then decided to do hospice care, even after the doctors highly not recommending it because they feared she was in to much "discomfort". After a few days at home and on the correct antibiotics our cat is now 100% better... so we almost put or cat down, for POOR JUDGMENT on your doctors recommendation. The summary of our complaint: 1. We kept getting pushed for expensive tests when we hadn't received the test results for the bacteria in her nose. 2. Before receiving the test results were highly encouraged to put our animal down multiple times and not recommend to do hospice care.. (even though she made a full recovery) 3. Not only did this caused my husband and I tons of emotional distress it costed us thousands of dollars. Which we can not afford in a pandemic. 4. Why didn't we start the doxycycline at the very beginning? When it was Obviously a bacterial infection and a URI due to the FHV. (What we told our doctors about several time's) Everyone seems very nice at the Pet Referral Center, which isn't the issue.. we felt like we were so desperate to help our cat that we were being taking advantage of for something that was fairly obvious diagnosis. read more

Really jacking up prices for Anastasia medicine as well as pain killers that i know for a fact cost 1,000x less then they charge for!!! I noticed Eddie's bloody lump next on his penis around December 15, 2020 when I was clipping his nails. As much as I wanted make an appointment with my primary Vet right away in Oakland, I was only able to make an appointment last Sunday 1/4/2021 On January 3 at around 10 am, I took Eddie to a Vet in Oakland, the vet couldn't remove the blood lump as it was too big for the vet to perform the surgery. So she recommended me to take Eddie to PETS Referal Center in Berkeley. Since Eddie's condition was a super emergency, on the same day night, I took Eddie to PETS referal center in Berkeley and signed up on their Website and waited in my car for my name to be called. After 45 min or so, a guy called me and said, "you need a surgery for your dog right? We can schedule you tomorrow at 10:00 am". I told him "That's fantastic we will be here 10:00 tomorrow". Soon later he called me back and said that "tomorrow 10:00 am doesn't work, can you come for Tuesday 8:30 am instead"? I said "Fine". I went back there Tuesday January 5 morning at 8:30 am. I didn't realize that the appointment was only for a surgical consultation. I thought they immediately remove the lump on the day because it was so big and about to be ruptured any minute. He had lumps in the past that ruptured before I took him a vet. At round 9:30 am Dr. Moser called me in my car. He said that the surgery would cost around $6500 to $8000, I was shocked and I told him that I need to seek other vet surgeon's advice and compare the price. I was expecting Dr, Moser to remove the lump right way. So I don't have to worry that his blood filled lump ruptured. He continues. He wants to give Eddie a Medication to stop the lump growth. Thus Eddy, my dog needs a lab work to make sure the medication work and his other organs function properly. So I said ok for the lab work, because I can use the lab result another vet for surgery. After waited one hour, I was called to pay the bill and paid the clinic $403. They said that lab result will be emailed later. I called them more than 3 times that I have not received the lab result. They said a nurse will do when they have a time. When I came home with a disappointment because Eddie lump was not removed. I opened the medication bag and found that the medication was not real medication but Chinese supplement. He probably makes a huge profit to sell me that supplement? That evening on I called a dozen vets in the Bay Area who can surgery on Eddie to remove the lump right away. Vet hospital 25 mile away from Berkeley agreed to remove the lump next day after the vet clinic learned Eddi's serious tumor condition. I emailed them with photos. They said they can surgery on Eddie around $2000 -$3000 tomorrow. I took Eddie to the Vet clinic next day, morning January 6, 2021 After all the total cost $3440, but I was very happy with the price. Eddie's lump was removed successfully a day after I went to Pets Referred Center Berkeley. The actual cost at Vellejo Vet hospital was $3433 compared to PETS referred center $6727 What a huge difference? I don't believe the service at Berkeley Vet was appropriate for my pet need at the time. Their service was totally useless and pointless. Therefore, the services fee $403 should be refunded. Though, I will agree to pay the Surgery Initial consultation fee of $138 I contacted the clinic and exchanged emails with the clinic manager Halle Donaldson, but she refused to refund me $403. This is a bad wicked business name name of Pet emergency service. read more

"I wish I had read the review before bringing her here. We brought our Boston terrier who had a terrible UTI and was in so much discomfort and pain. We arrived at 8 pm and walked out at 2 am! They wanted to charge me over $1000 for an X-ray and culture. I agreed to the service, and since we were already in the waiting room, I thought they would take her in right away. Nope! We had to wait another hour for the nurse to tell me they were short-staffed and prioritizing other pets with urgency. Despite my dog's pain and bleeding, it was not considered urgent to them. After hearing this, I asked her to cancel the X-ray and culture and requested medication and the bill to take her home. It was the worst and longest wait at a vet center, and I will NEVER recommend this location to anyone." read more

They're busy but organized. They may take time but they're working super hard and get to each patient as fast as they can. Everyone is empathetic and loves animals. They are clear about cost/pricing. It's emergency services so yes they are a little pricey. They took great care of our cat once before while she was having severe issues and were sensitive when she had to be brought in to be euthanized. They offer cremation as well. read more

The people who work here clearly love animals, know their stuff, and are extremely friendly. The waiting room and examination room were also well maintained. With that said, a while back my 2yr old DLH cat was experiencing constipation for several weeks. She wasn't expressing pain, but it was clear she struggled pooping. So I took her to the vet (here) and was informed she's extremely dehydrated and how to check when I'm home. This was extremely helpful. I was given a receipt of what to expect if given permission to move forward with treating my cat. It was over $1K to just investigate what was wrong: sedation, X-rays, liquids for hydrating her, etc were recommended. Long story short, I thanked them for their time, but decided to go home and research online for home remedies. A quick trip to the grocery store and $1.45 later, I gave her 1tspn of 100% pure pumpkin, mixed it with some dry food, and she pooped an hour later. I'm sure the staff is very well trained and much smarter than me, but it feels silly I saved myself roughly a thousand or more. Plus, I had to pay roughly $70 for the visit, which I DO NOT MIND paying since the staff treated me and my cat well. One final note: when I was calling up different vets (including this one) on scheduling in my cat, every vet receptionists exclaimed that constipation in cats is very serious and that she should see someone immediately. Worst case scenario something could rupture inside and she dies. So it wasn't a shock to me that this vet said she needed to have A, B, and C done. It was a shock, though, that it felt like the vet went for the most expensive option before asking what I've done for my cat. I may go back, but only if it's clear to me my cat's in a life/death situation (allergic reaction, bleeding to death, having seizures, etc). Not for general visits. read more

Called this morning with an emergency for my dog and the person on the phone said they weren't busy and would be able to see him quickly. I drove up and now it is 4 hours before they can see my fur baby. I thought this place was an emergency facility and would have enough staff. WORST ONCOLOGY EXPERIENCE EVER !!! I DO NOT RECOMMEND COMING HERE for oncology let alone services period! My family's pet dog Lulu was diagnosed with lymphoma in late February and had been receiving treatment here mainly under Dr. Siedlecki, however had been seen by Dr. Shaffer and received an Lspar injection under her in the past. June 6th I spoke with Dr. Seidlecki about Lulus current status, she was still a candidate to have chemo, she expressed yes, inquired if i was I wanted to come that same day or later in the week for treatment. I let her know I would discuss it with the family and get back to her, she said that was fine. I call back the next day June 7th trying to get on the schedule for treatment before the end of the week and because Lulu's lymph nodes were growing exponentially day by day along with a decreasing appetite. I was told by reception and several techs, "Dr. Siedlecki has been overseeing the majority of Lulu's case and since she doesn't have an established relationship with another oncologist she would not be able to be seen by them unless paying for a full consultation exam, however there is currently no consultation availability for the same or next day so Lulu must wait for Monday June 12th when Dr. Siedlecki is back in office. If Lulu is not doing well she should be seen by ER for supportive care. (which she's already on- fluids and anti nausea medication) After a couple days, Friday June 9th, the manager Jessica contacts me to tell me they are denying Lulu any further treatments and suggest we go elsewhere because of my phone "interactions" with some of their technicians. Sunday June 11th Lulu began going downhill and had to be put to sleep on early Monday morning, June 12th. Overall, the main issues I encountered with this hospital was: 1. the inability to give an itemization of what is to be expected cost wise the day of chemotherapy treatment vs giving a CHOP protocol that has inaccurate price range expectancies( for example on the CHOP protocol the Lspar injection is listed to range from 700-2000 dollars, yet when LuLu received her Lspar injections our bill was a little over 500 before a 25% discount was applied) 2.The the inability to provide upfront itemized breakdowns of each chemotherapy treatment option and their price ranges (oral route, doxorubicin route, tenovia route, etc) 3. Not emphasizing that Dr. Siedlecki is a part time doctor, so if I'm inclined to want more availability windows, I should see a full time doctor. 4. Not emphasizing that despite having more than one oncologist at their facility, Doctors will not involve themselves with another case regardless if they have technically received treatment under them before. 5.Making my dog suffer by denying her chemotherapy at the last minute when the doctor herself said, "would you like to come in today or later this week?" She should've never let those words leave her lips. (they have the voice call to reference) 6. Dr. Siedlecki for leading me to believe Lulu would be able to get treatment later that week after speaking with her. Should be held accountable for not sticking to her word or admitting to have misspoken. 7. Cutting my family's time short with Lulu, we understand she could've easily crashed shortly after receiving treatment but had they provided treatment before the weekend, our family pet might still be here. (We would've been more accepting of losing her, knowing that we tried) 8.The hospital manager Jessica's stupidity and lack of common sense. She unethically and unprofessionally contacted my boss to discuss myself (and or salvage a business relationship since our hospital refers a lot of clientele to them) 9. Lastly, believing a technician's claim that I called her a "clown" over the phone (when in fact all voice calls are recorded) and conveniently do not have the recording as proof. I'm 90% sure that the technician who made the false accusation is named Gaby. Being that she's the only one I hung up on abruptly. The fact she sent a follow up email after speaking with her, it came across as passive aggressive. For the record, at no point did I ever call Gaby or anyone else a clown. However, I am now calling Gaby a "Bitch." read more

When I was in 7th grade, I was a full-blown hypochondriac and alarmist. Instead of books in my backpack, I carried: toilet paper (in case somebody couldn't spare a square);MRE's, a compass, flares, a rape whistle and... no lie, a snake bite kit. Let it be known that I lived in Orange County and my commute to school was 1/3 of a mile. If that. But you never know...! I have 15 degrees of scoliosis to the left, account of my sherpa-like transportation of my very heavy school books (as the backpack was full of survivalist gear). What in the hell does this have to do with a Pet ER? I'll get to it - don't rush me! The back story is worth the ramble. Okay - so the Tuxedo rescue cat had a urinary tract blockage in 2006, that set me back $1700 - and he eats only prescription cat food. But I assure you; I am not crazy, and I am definitely straight. Most of the time. Suffice it to say, when I came home Thursday at 10:30pm, and saw the Tux fretting and grooming himself in a very... personal manner, I was really, really bummed. But I was also intrigued about the previously discussed possibility of him becoming a transgendered cat, so I'll call it a wash. Much to his chagrin, I loaded the Tux into the cat carrier, and swiped the flyer for the Pet ER Treatment service that was posted in my building. I was dreading the financial implications, along with the potential 9 hour triage, on account of all them illegal chihuahuas that sneak across the border and don't have health insurance - you know how it is. I could not have been more delightfully surprised - I was buzzed in immediately, and the Tux was whisked into a triage room by a bona fide veterinarian within 5 minutes. CURRENT issues of gossip rags were hung on a conveniently placed rack (Yes!) - Seinfeld was playing on a small but serviceable flatscreen TV... AND there was a hospitality station with a water cooler; a very respectable selection of tea bags (I said tea bags!!! Ha ha ha!) replete with cups, sugar, Splenda... the works. Side note: they do not offer mani-pedis or chair massage while you wait... but that's about the only fault I can find with this wonderful facility. The staff, across the board were 5 stars, all the way; all are clearly compassionate and sincere animal lovers. Dr. Cindy Lamparter was quick, direct and kept us updated on the Tux's status. I was relaxed as could be, and knew that he was getting the best care available. The pricing: incredibly reasonable - the Tux got an exam, urinalysis, hydration AND a shot of morphine for about $150 - which is what I would pay, a la carte, for just the morphine. (I keed, I keed!) Actually, I'd pay more (Just say no!) Keep in mind - this is sans appointment, and waaaaaaay afterhours. Bonus: they faxed a report to the Tux's regular vet; they made a complete copy of his medical records and didn't charge me (Kaiser and Kinko's - are you listening?); I got a followup call from another vet the next day... and a personal call to check in on the Tux from Dr. Cindy herself. Kid. Gloves. If you love your animal friends, make sure you have the primary digits for this place on your mobile... It's far better to hope for the best and plan for the worst. Which is why I'm carrying a snake-bite kit in my purse again. read more

BEWARE---BEWARE--BEWARE ** I had too take the last 2 weeks to decide if wanting to post this or not. After very serious consideration we are, so we can advise everybody on the internet considering using this place. It's only fair. If you deicide to go here, you been warned! They are a total ripoff and will misdiagnose your pet and severely charge you for bullshit crap. They will charge you at every shift change for the new doctor coming on shift as they say your pet will need a new exam by each vet coming on shift (it's like a shift change every 4 hours).... We brought in our 7 week old teacup chihuahua as it was throwing up. They claim they did tests and it was a congenital birth defect with regurgitation and the puppy would need very extensive tests done to determine how severe.. As my wife and I sat in the room we could infact overhear them telling the guy in the other room the exact same bullshit as us!!!! The came back with a offer that was low and a high.. We were so alarmed that we love our pet dearly (they will take advantage of you on this) and would do anything for "Tinkerbell" as a pet is a family member. They are not our regular vet, we are from out of the area, our puppy was just seen 2 days prior by our vet who we've used for 25 years and and was totally fine. We told them too keep "Tinkerbell" overnight cause they had us so scared something was wrong..we told them we wanted to call our family vet in the morning too discuss with them. Our vet doesn't get in until 8am but they said if we went past 6am it would be another couple hundred dollars until 8am. We took a chance took our pet at 6am. And never had issues after that. We called our vet of 25 years he confirmed something wasn't right with this place and they way they charge customers is unheard of being a per hospital or not. (I won't use his exact words lol) We got home 2 days later had " Tinkerbell" examined and our vet confirmed a very healthy active pet. No health issues what so ever! Was only motion sickness from traveling lol! They took us for almost $500 in this place so do not trust them... Never, ever take your pets here! There are other emergency vets out there that are literally 1/2 to a 1/4 the cost (I recommend OAKVET in Oakland). They are a complete scan/rip-off. They suggest unnecessary treatments and take waaaaayyy to long to have you seen (even if your pet is literally having an emergency). Absolutely avoid at all costs. read more

An update...our marvelous street dog, Sammie, passed away on August 27, 2009. Her death (at home, without intervention) was remarkable in its simplicity, grace, and finality. We knew she was heading toward the final curtain as her seizures were getting more frequent...sometimes two or three a day. We also knew that giving her a pacemaker, or giving her blood thinners (remember, she was a blind, diabetic, deaf dog) was not doing her any favors. At 11:00 on Thursday, she was weak, but able to go outside with help to pee. At 1:30 she was refusing water or food but throwing up. At 2:00 she was put to bed, snuggled my close friend Smiley (and me of course.) By 2:15 she had seized and could not be revived. We waited (her three canine brothers and I) until 5:00. Called PETS, who had us bring her in. They were wonderful and respectful...gave us private time with her as long as we needed. We said goodbye and they sent her little tired body to be cremated. Less than three weeks later, they called. Said they were sorry for our loss and that we could pick up her little cedar urn box. She is now on the mantel, where we still cherish the laughter she gave us for eleven years. Thanks to PETS...we have a marvelous ending to what was a miraculous little life.
