I have a love/hate relationship with Petsmart. I like to go there and look around but I feel that their bottom line (making money) isn't always in the best interest of the animals. My boyfriend and I went here several days ago to buy a pair of dwarf Campbell's hamsters. We're fairly knowledgeable about them because we used have two breeding pairs. I don't like the way that they label the cages by color. They had white, black, and "blueberry" (grey) cages for the same species, I guess to make them more enticing to buyers. We finally settled on a black one and a white one - both female (that's all they sell). But when we got them home, the black one was clearly dominant and harassed the white one nonstop. A couple days later I saw a spot of blood on her fur and decided to take the black one back. We exchanged her for an albino one from the same cage the white one had come from. This sales guy contradicted what the previous one had said and told us that no, you can't mix hamsters from different cages (not true, if they're young enough it's usually not a problem). He also told us that this species is known to be "mean". If I didn't know that this is incorrect, I would've wondered why then Petsmart would misrepresent it as being a good pet. They're actually quite easy to tame and if they seem "mean" it's just because they aren't used to being handled by people yet. So we bring the hamster home, my boyfriend glances down into the cardboard box and exclaims, "this is a male!" Sure enough, you didn't even have to flip this hamster over to see he was carrying an impressive set of testicles behind him. Now our breeding pairs had resulted in about 16 babies, some of which we adopted out, the rest of which we kept in same-sex groups. If we hadn't known how to tell a male from a female, we would've had some problems. Picture that episode of Star Trek with the tribbles. A couple of hours later, we made it back to Petsmart to exchange him. The same guy was there and we told him the problem. He was doubtful and explained that when they get a shipment, they check to make sure they're all female. The hamster was a little scared and nippy so instead of picking him up from the box, they guy attempts to flip him over with this gigantic pair of tweezers. Eventually he told us that he personally thought it was a female but if we wanted to exchange it, that was fine. Whatever...we knew we were right. A younger sales guy helped us pick out a replacement and confided that he too thought it was a male. I'm just a little annoyed because I could tell he thought we were being ridiculous and because it shows that they really don't know much about what they're selling. I hope someone else checked and confirmed it was a male and that the guy felt like an ass. I also worry that our two females might be pregnant. Our previous hamsters were bought from a nice family on Craigslist and not only were they correctly sexed and used to being held but at $5 were a bargain compared to the $20 Petsmart is selling them for. Next time, we'll check there first. read more

So many pro's and con's... Pro's- They're really close to where I live. The lines are shorter than at grocery stores, so it's an easy in and out most of the time. They carry Hills products and both of my pets are on specialty diets. They have really good grooming products which are worth the price, since my dog has skin allergies she can't use cheap shampoo (she's fancy) and they have a wide variety of of shampoos and conditioners. You do save a bit of money with their card and they're always sending me coupons in the mail which are actually useful. When you check out you can donate to animals, but if you decide not to that day they don't get all pissy about it. Con's- So many of their products are overpriced. You can get dog training pads (my dog is old and sometimes has a hard time making it down the stairs) at Walmart or HEB for literally half the price. The same with cat litter. Not a good place if you don't like dogs. I thought this would be an obvious one, but I took a friend here so she could see what an awesome selection of wet cat food they have, completely forgetting that people love to take their dogs here, even if they're not the best behaved. This was a mistake.... Walking up to the store can be a little tricky if you walk in the grass. Beware of dog bombs! Even though there's poop baggies two feet away at almost any given part of a grassy area, people are rude and don't pick up after their pets. It's a very clean store (on the inside) for as much as they have going on. The staff is generally pretty nice, even though they don't always know what there talking about with certain products. If you have extra cash, which I don't most of the time, you can pick up just about anything for your pets. If you don't, stick to nutrition, such as healthy dog foods that you can't get outside of specialty pet stores, and treats, because they have a ton of choices. Get the rest at Walmart. Most of the toys and other pet products you can find literally, brand and quality, at HEB and Walmart. read more

My dog loves to go to this place. First off the trainer (Krisi) is awesome and makes it fun for the dog and the owner. We really enjoyed taking obedience classes here. Everyone is friendly and pretty knowledgeable. The only negative thing is that they don't have as much as the website has. I know they can't but I wish they had a bigger selection of doggie shirts and the smaller Nylabone frisbees. But all in all this place is great and I really should get stock in it b/c I'm there about once a week. read more

Don't even bother with the grooming salon. They have no idea what they are doing. We have tried and tried and every time i pick my dog up her hair cut looks horrible. So upset. Pretty sure they don't understand what a "cocker cut" is. Looks like we will be taking our bossiness elsewhere. read more

My Darby girl loves her neighborhood Petsmart. She gets genuinely excited when we pull up and she realizes where are. She loves to cruise each aisle and soak up all the smells of the bottom row. Of course, her excitement quickly fades when we bypass the aisle with all the yummy chewies. Yup, she's onto me: We're going to the groomer! Activate doggie brakes. Commence poochie pouting. "Momma, are you really going to leave me here?!" (yeah, she talks okay!?) It's all an act to get sympathy from us. No sympathy here, sister! Your hair is crazy wild and you look like a hobo dog. It's time for a cut! Once she's over the initial panic about being left she does fine and always comes out looking BEAUTIFUL and happy to be sporting a new do. There are probably cheaper places to take her, but the convenience wins. With several groomers on staff, I can usually get an appointment within 2 days of calling. Every groomer she's had has been super friendly and listened to exactly what I'm looking for before taking her to the back. Darby is always soo soft when I get her back from the groomer. Like velvety soft... I can't stop petting her! She doesn't mind. We also did basic obedience training a few years ago and I definitely recommend that. Krissy was our trainer and she's phenomenal. I'm talking dog-whisperer awesome. She really knows how to connect with the dogs. There was one big fella in our class with some serious energy and a wall-shaking bark. After a few weeks of Krissy working with him, he learned that good behavior warrants yummy treats and soon he was one of the best pupils in the class. A great perk is that once you've completed the training class you can go back anytime for a "refresher" course on any of the lessons that your pup may be having a hard time with. read more

We recently bought a large bag of Purina puppy chow (large breed) for our fur kid from this store. As usual, we emptied the contents in the food storage container and started feeding seven month old pup. After starting since the last 4-5 days , he has had a change in his stools and vomited 3-4 times. We thought it was heat or something else and gave the medication . However, on examining the food closely we found out that it is full of WORMS. The no. of worms are so much that they are hiding inside his kibbles and after a couple of days we can now see them on d lid of the food container. The sight is disgusting..This is very very upsetting!! We are very very disappointed with Petsmart and regret buying food from here!! read more

Went on a busy Saturday to take my dog for a grooming appointment. Though everyone had their hands full of dog when we arrived, a couple helped me know what to do and how long til they met with me. Their system was smooth, everyone knew answers and they got us in and out according to planned time. Thanks Chelsea and crew Tips: 1) make your appointment ahead of time- walk ins are welcome, but don't seem likely- this is a busy place. I love Petsmart. I volunteer at this location. I take care of the adoptable cats every Wednesday. I love them all so much! Make sure to stop by and check them out. I adopted my kitty, Granola, here. I have three medium to large dogs with varying coats, hygiene needs, and personalities but they always enjoyed coming here for all their grooming needs. I have one dog who sheds like a yeti and she always came back sleek and de-shedded after a good furminator brushing. This place seems out of place. It almost looks out-of-business and when you go inside, you still get that eerie feeling that it should be out-of-business. They do have a larger selection of petstuff and at a lower price than our local places. They don't have too many animals, but I think this is a place I'd go to buy wood shavings or flea medication and all that other junk. I can't think of anything else to write for this place because I got that eerie feeling again. read more

I usually don't write reviews BUT this experience was EVERYTHING!! Took my skittish senior border collie the other day for a much needed bath and TLC. I don't go very often to the groomers because my fur mama is VERY AFRAID of water. Other attempts have just been bad experiences or we are rejected because she growls/and moves too much. Kate C. was the first person to greet me, she recommended the best cut/treatment for my fur mama, and even explain how she is a senior and therefore shall be treated "like a queen" I came back to healthy shiny new puppy the way she was wagging her tail happy as can be. I literally can not thank Kate C. Enough for her patience and care for my senior fur-mama. 20/10 couldn't ask for better customer service and WILL be back read more

This is only about our Grooming Experience at PetSmart. We like the store in general and have shopped there often. Summary: gave our dog razor burn. Ears became infected due to soapy water in ears. Resulted in a $200. plus vet bill and hearing loss. She no longer responds to door bell, our voice, etc. We took our dog to get groomed at PetSmart. Since it was our first time there for grooming, my husband and I went in person to set up the appointment. I had some questions and concerns that I tried to bring up with the receptionist - no blow dryer please since it upsets our dog, and don't cut too closely. The receptionist was argumentative and dismissive of my questions and requests, seeming annoyed. I thought about canceling then but didn't. When I dropped our dog off, the groomer seemed nice and polite enough. He even called to say he could start to work on our dog early. I added to please not clip our dog's nails. Our vet said she doesn't need it , and it upsets her. At Petco, they cut one nail painfully short and it bled. That was her last professional manicure. But, the groomer kept insisting on filing. He said was it safer and more gentle than clipping our dog's nails. I finally agreed, which I shouldn't have. When I picked our dog up, she had a very nice not too close shave at the number the groomer agreed on. However, when I got her home and removed her PetSmart scarf, I noticed two long razor burns down both sides of her neck, under her chin. They were almost bleeding. I checked her ears and they looked about the same, fairly clean. About two days later, my husband massaged her ears like always. She let out a loud yelp that I heard from downstairs. We didn't know why exactly. The next day she let out another yelp when my husband just reached out to touch her ears. I checked her ears. Both had yeast. Her right ear was so inflamed with yeast that it was bleeding. Her skin was bright red, yellow scabby, and pimply looking. I treated them both over the weekend. The left ear healed by Monday. But, the right ear was still giving her problems. I decided to bring our dog by to talk to the grooming department - to find out what happened, to let them know the problem and to see what their advice would be. I figured or hoped that they would be concerned enough to offer a solution. Especially, since they have a vet office in the store. I also figured as an fyi, I'd let them know about her razor burn. As soon as our dog entered the grooming salon in the store, she began nervously shaking so hard her teeth chattered. Normally, she loves going to PetSmart. Her groomer was there and came over. He denied that he cut her too closely. He said there would be specific razor tracks. He said he noticed she already had the rash, where the fur was cut super short. Then why is the "rash" only in the two spots on her neck where the fur was shaved down to the skin, in two distinct tracks? Showing the groomer her yeast infected ear, he insisted that our dog must be allergic to their ear cleaner. If so, then why is the yeast infection only badly inflamed in her right ear, and not so bad in her left ear? The groomer finally admitted that the cotton balls in her ear(s) got wet, but, that he replaced them with dry ones. Overall, the groomer offered no suggestions, and put the blame on our dog. She has a vet appointment on Tuesday to get her right ear looked at and treated further. Tuesday: Vet said she has a very serious yeast and bacterial infection down in her right ear canal, most likely due to soapy water getting in. Like "swimmer's ear" he said. Vet put "plugs" in both ears of antibiotic, antii-inflamitory and probiotic. Goes back next week for second plug, and has a third vet appointment the week after that. I wasn't going to post this. But, after meeting with the groomer today, I changed my mind. I hate to raise a stink about places. The other groomers there may be great. It's tough because dogs can't talk and let you know what's going on. As a dog parent, I'm finding how low dogs rank in our society - from the poor quality commercial dog food, mistreatment, etc. It seems like it takes a lot of shopping, research and luck to find the proper professional care. My Previous PetSmart Review about the store in general: Overall, the PetSmart there has a lot of friendly and helpful staff. Our dogs love sniffing everything and getting treats. Plus, they have a scale near the vet area. Good prices. I also shop at Gallery of Pets for natural, organic products. But, for things I can also get at PetSmart I do, for the cheaper price. read more

This PetSmart is pretty average as far as they go. The natural dog food is pretty reasonably priced and they have some great sales on natural dog treats every now and then, but that's pretty standard across their different locations. The one thing I'd avoid in this location is asking employees for their advice. I came in here a couple months ago to pick up some Blue Buffalo puppy food. A woman wearing a PetSmart name tag proceeded (unasked) to push Natural Balance on me and tell me that the food I feed by dog is too high in protein. That was really awkward. Did you just try to stop me from purchasing food you sell in your own store? I checked with a family member who used to work for PetSmart's corporate office, who told me that PetSmart allows brand representatives to walk around their stores as some type of nutrition specialist. It seems like the advice at this PetSmart is paid for by brand advertising, so I wouldn't trust that anyone I asked for advice would have any real unbiased knowledge about something as specific as dog food. read more

I have used this location for shopping, grooming and vet care(Banfield Hospital Location): Shopping- store is well stocked and haven't had any issues with outdated food or defective merchandise. Staff is friendly and helpful. Grooming- I have a rescued 9yo Pomeranian and was nervous to take him to be groomed the first time. Luz was awesome and not only was she patient with me and my questions, she was wonderful with my dog. He looked great and happy when I picked him up. I will definitely use them again. I have 2 family members that use them for their dogs as well and have had only positive experiences. Vet care- I LOVE their staff and they have taken wonderful care of my dog!! I signed up for their wellness care plan and I highly recommend it, especially, if you are worried about the medical costs of a pet. read more

As a first time puppy parent, I walked into PetSmart seeking advice and guidance in a somewhat frantic state. I rescued a puppy from someone who couldn't afford to care for her and found myself scrambling, trying to prepare for her arrival. I went to this PetSmart several times over a 3 day period and each time I was greeted and helped by very knowledgeable people. The employee's here have a genuine understanding and love for animals. Parking is easy, you can bring your furry friend in the store to sniff around and they have an excellent return policy too!! Plus, they offer coupons, training and lots of advice to those of us who are new to raising a pet. read more

At first, I was skeptical of Petsmart training. I thought that at worst, my puppy would get to hang with some other dogs and improve on her social skills. She actually learned everything that was taught; sit, down, leave it, drop it (most days), shake, watch me, stay (also most days) and more. This was soooo worth it. The price of 6 classes is what many trainers in town charge for one training session. Your dog will not learn unless you work with them most days and practice, practice, practice. Please don't embark on this unless you are willing to put in the time. If you are dedicated, your dog will impress you and your friends greatly. read more

This location used to have staff that were friendly and professional... But that has changed. Went inn to buy a fish for my daughter but ended up getting a frog from a lack luster associate. Once I paid at the register, I'm stopped to sign some paperwork about a guarantee, when I told them I was in a hurry and didn't have time, the cashier Brian had the lack luster associate practically chase after my 9 year old to retrieve the frog, that I had already paid for. After the insane behavior on the part of the sales associate Brian, I asked for a refund and told them they should really let people know they will have to sign paperwork before they pay. Brian said in a condensing tone that they would take that under advisement and proceeded to check out another person before giving me my refund. The unprofessionalism of this location is apparent and I will be shopping at Petco from now on. read more

It's been a Godsend living close to this store. The staff is friendly. They always have in stock what my extremely picky felines (I know that was redundant) like to eat. My favorite thing is taking a look at the cats that Austin Pets Alive have there. I especially love that I rarely see the same kitties the next visit. Made the grooming appointment on Saturday via the website. Explained my dog would sedated because she hates having her face groomed. Got texts and emails confirming appointment. Arrive 5 minutes early with my very drugged dog. Groomer says she tried to leave a vm 1 hour earlier saying PetSmart does not groom drugged dogs. I'm standing there with my sedated dog who never should have been sedated had I known they would not take her. Nothing "smart" about PetSmart. read more

ZERO STARS- I've been coming to PetSmart grooming for years and will never be going back. Took my dog in to get a bath/ haircut and the groomer, Nikki, cut his tail enough to where he needed to be taken to Banfield next door. Three hours later at the vet he left with a cone, bandage on his tail, and under pain medication for a week. He's so out of it due to the two shots he received. I got a vague phone call from Nikki explaining what's happened and she not a word when I went in to see what was going on. Know who you're getting at this grooming salon, this was not okay. read more

My dogs love going to PetSmart. I took my youngest (dog) to PetSmart for puppy training and intermediate training. He graduated valedictorian (self-appointed) of his class mostly because Krisi is such an awesome trainer. Training here.... I was there for a potty training consult but was early so I was walking around the store browsing. All of a sudden the trainer that I had made the appt with in person the day before walks up to me and proceeds to tell me pulling on the leash is extreamly harmful to my puppy and that I should absolutely stop doing that. That there are better ways to handle and train your new puppy. I almost felt like punching this girl. She was condescending and arrogant and who the hell is she to give me unsolicited un-warranted advice. I said, "I am here for a potty training consult and I don't appriciate your advice". She didn't even recognize me, but we continued on to the puppy training area and she couldn't tell me anything that was meaningful or useful. Sidenote: I was an off leash aggressive behaviorist dogtrainer in the Rockies for 7 years and just was having a hard time housebreaking my puppy. Thought who knows maybe they have a piece of the pie I was missing. She admittedly has only been training for 2 years and the funniest part was everything she was doing that was her way of "training better than the way I do things" wasn't working with my dog, but he sure as hell listens to me. I have a 12 yo boxer than hasn't been on a leash in 12 years that is a soldier and has has probably one of the most awesome lives that 99% of dogs have had. For the hour we pretty much sat there not talking. looking at the dog. She let her dog out and it growled and barled at my puppy. I did not enjoy the pushiness of her randomly in the store tell me what I was doing was wrong, she over stepped her boundary and the class I paid for didn't give me any information I could've used. I would gladly train any dog that needed training. I ended up going to Med school, but she made me want to give it up and go back to helping people with their dogs. =( I lost a lot of respect for this overpriced chain. =((((( read more

Hey Cashier #470742 I love this store but I don't need to hear about how I shouldn't buy a choke collar and how they "really don't work" I am sure corporate wouldn't be thrilled to hear that your telling their customers not to buy their products. My dog is pushing 50 lbs and is only 5 months old! We are going through training please believe me I am NOT "hurting" my dog... so there is no reason to accuse me of such things. ALSO get off your cell phone.... you're being paid I really hope they have cameras in there watching you.... Not impressed however ONE employee isn't going to keep me away I like and have gotten to know some of the other women in this Pet Smart who are very helpful and enjoyable to shop around. read more

Amazing grooming staff and retail staff. They always take care of us and our two dogs.

We went and there was a very long line. A cashier named Ronnie called for help and quickly and cheerily moved everyone through. He even dealt with a few things like coupon matching and discounts while moving people expediently. I was impressed because it felt like we might be there for a while due to the size of the line. I've recently started using the grooming service for my dogs and I'm extremely happy with it. They trim the nails, brush the teeth and even clean out the ears, which is a yucky job that not every groomer does. They do flea treatments, too. It's popular and you will likely need a reservation. I got the impression that they don't do a lot of breed-specific specialty cuts, but they certainly do a nice job. The store has a broad selection of foods, treats and accessories. The dog chews seem expensive. They have an in-store vet who accepts emergency visits on the weekends. They have other stuff too, great little birds, adoption days - all kinds of stuff. It's fun to wander around the store with your pup and the people are nice. read more

I have had my golden trimmed at petsmart and they did an excellent job. They usually trim and file his nails every other month. No compliments on grooming, but i've signed up twice for the rewards card and it never works. :( read more

I've only used their grooming service. It's OK but they keep missing the dew claw when I get the fur beast's nails clipped.

This is five stars because of Amy. First time I have ever encountered someone who knew what they were talking about at a pet smart. This lady, April, knew what she was talking about and could tell me the pro/cons of the different things I was looking at...like why human shampoos were bad for dogs (because human PH is much higher then dogs), the pros/cons of different toe clipping machines (the sanding ones mimic the natural grinding dogs get from running around, plus less dangerous), of different brands of shampoos (which ones are returned more and which ones they use for there expensive grooming), of different bones (beef bones vs elk bones), etc! It was refreshing to actually be helped. On another note, I highly recommend using the Amazon app to check the prices...You open the app and scan the barcode to see how much it is in the "real world." PetSmart is getting smarter, a lot more of their prices are competitive (most if the shampoos and similar consumable products were about the same as Amazon), however, you will find some of there prices, like the Dremel nail filer, 1/2 the price on Amazon ($50 at PetSmart vs $24 at Amazon). Just wanted a nail/paw trim, but purchased the "bath and brush" because they apparently don't do the "pawdicure" anymore. Dog was there over three hours and the person I'd scheduled with was a no-show, so another groomer said he'd do the job. When I arrived for pick up, I was told my 32 lb. dog hadn't been very good and that they weren't able to trim all of the nails because a few were cracked. WTF? Her ears hadn't been trimmed or cleaned, paws were not scissored or trimmed, nor had there been a "sanitary trim," as per the description. She didn't smell like she'd been bathed, either. They only discernable thing I could see that they'd done was to barely clip the tips off a couple of her nails. I'd left a hefty tip and feel ripped off and bad that my dog had to be there for 3+ hours. Also the place is filthy--dog hair, dirt and dust everywhere. Just look at the front desk area and see the dust bunnies. read more
